minot state football 2011

TRADITION IN TRANSITION: Minot State is in its third season of a four-year transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. MSU advanced to Year Three Provisional status in July and is expected to complete the tran-sition in July 2012. Minot State was selected to join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2012-13.RECORDS: Minot State is 0-1 overall while CU is playing its first game of the season.COACHES CORNER: Minot State’s head coach is Paul Rudolph. Rudolph is a solid 26-15 overall in four sea-sons. Ryan Williams begins his first season as the head coach at CU and his first as a collegiate head coach.ON THE AIR: The game is broadcast locally on KCJB 910-AM with Scott Kittell calling the play-by-play. Live stats and live audio can be accessed online at (www.msubeavers.com). The game is also live on the NBC North Dakota Sports Network – KMOT in Minot.RANKINGS: Neither team was ranked in any of the three major NCAA Division II polls (AFCA, d2football.com, SuperRegion 3). RECENT HISTORY: MSU struggled to find consistency on offense, turning the ball over six times in a 27-0 loss at Bemidji State to start the season. Concordia-St. Paul finished the 2010 season with a tough 13-9 loss to Pittsburg State in the Mineral Water Bowl. OVERALL SERIES: The Beavers and Golden Bears have played three times, with CU winning twice – both times at home. MSU is 1-0 against Concordia at the friendly confines of the Herb.NOTING THE GOLDEN BEARS: In a strange twist to a large conference, Concordia University, St. Paul was selected sixth overall in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason poll. The Golden Bears were selected fifth in the South Region, one place behind Wayne State. Wayne State was two spots behind CU in the overall poll… Head coach Ryan Williams, a North Dakota State graduate, was promoted from Offensive Coor-dinator to Interim Head Coach late in the offseason… Offensive lineman Tyler Hendrickson has been picked to multiple preseason All-American teams. PARDON THE MESS: Minot State will have extensive construction going on as the game is being played. The university asks that all fans abide by the signage around the stadium and stays out of any and all construction zones. The Beavers are currently building a state-of-the-art wellness center next to the MSU Dome, there is con-tinued work on the new stands for the stadium and Allen Field is the site of a geothermal site for the university.CATCHING ON QUICKLY: Minot State’s Jabari Taylor (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) wasted little time making his presence known on the offensive end of the ball as he hauled a team-high eight passes against Bemidji State. Taylor caught a school-record 90 passes in 2008 for Minnesota State Moorhead.UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY: It won’t be fully known until the game is started how the Paul Rudolph led Beavers will respond to a shutout at the hands of Bemidji State. It’s never happened. Rudolph suffered his first shutout loss as the head coach at MSU. The Beavers were last blanked in 2006 by Jamestown College 3-0. It was the second such 3-0 loss for the Beavers in Dakota Athletic Conference play that season.SPREADING IT AROUND: While Minot State’s C.J. Evans (R-Fr., QB, Havre, Mont.) didn’t have a great start to his collegiate career, throwing five interceptions, he did spread the ball around to multiple Beavers in the opening game. Eight different players caught at least one pass, including four wide receivers, three running backs and a tight end.MOHR STEADY PLAY PLEASE: Minot State junior Brett Mohr (LB, Southey, Saskatchewan) was steady at the linebacker position in the opening game. Mohr matched his 2010 total for tackles for a loss with 1.5 in the opener and finished with 5.5 total tackles Thursday.

Paul Rudolph returns for his fifth season at the helm of the Minot State University football program.

Rudolph has been extremely successful in his first four seasons, leading the Beavers to the NAIA Playoffs for the first time in eight seasons in 2009, winning his second share of the Dakota Athletic Conference title in three seasons.

He was named the DAC Coach of the Year in 2007, in which the Beavers established two conference records - team inter-ceptions in a single season (24) and individual interceptions for a single season (nine), by Nicholas Marshall.

The interceptions helped MSU to an impressive plus-8 in the turnover margin, a stat in which the Beavers are plus-20 in Rudolph’s four seasons.

In 2009, MSU was second in the DAC in nearly every major statistical category including scoring per game (29.5), total yards per game (347.7), rushing per game (163.2), passing per game (211.5), total defense (290.0) and passing defense (169.5). The Beavers were also ranked 16th in the NAIA in total defense and were in the top 50 in the nation in 23 statisti-cal categories.

Rudolph is a graduate of Minot State University in 1988 where he played quarterback for the Beavers for four seasons. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. He also participated in track and field, holding the Beavers out-door track and field javelin record of 203-feet-1 to this date. He was inducted into the Minot State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.

Rudolph comes to Minot State from St. Cloud State, in St. Cloud, Minn., where he was the Offensive Coordinator and offensive line coach for seven seasons. During his time at SCSU, the Huskies established 26 single season, 21 single game and nine individual offensive school records. In 2005, Rudolph helped SCSU to 418.6 yards per game and over 30 points per game. He coached 13 first team, 11 second team and two honorable mention All-North Central Conference performers. Rudolph helped the Huskies to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2004 and an NCC title in 2002.

Prior to his work at St. Cloud, Rudolph was the head football coach at Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa from 1991-99. He was also the Athletic Director for Upper Iowa from 1996-99, of-fensive coordinator for the football team from 1990-93 and served as the head track and field coach.

Rudolph holds a Master of Arts Degree in Physical Educa-tion and Recreation from the University of South Dakota. He was a graduate assistant football coach for USD prior to his time at Upper Iowa.

He is originally from Stanley, N.D., and is a 1984 graduate of Stanley High School. Rudolph and his wife, Renae, have three children, Zachary, McKenzie and Creighton. Zachary is a senior wide receiver on the MSU football team.

By MICHAEL LINNELLMSU Sports Information

Minot State University senior Jabari Taylor had a hard time explaining the feeling of getting back on the field last Thursday.

“I don’t know how to say it,” he said. “Words can’t even describe it. It was tough sitting out a year and I wasn’t sure if I would get the chance again.”

Taylor’s path to Minot State isn’t the typical one. He had two outstanding seasons at Minnesota State-Moor-head before being dismissed from the team for violation of team rules.

He was all but out of football.“I called a lot of schools to see if anyone would give

me the opportunity,” he said. “For about a week and a half I just went home and worked before Minot called. I decided to pack my back and take a chance.”

Taylor took a chance on MSU and the Beavers did the same in bringing in a player that had just one year of eligibility remaining.

“I didn’t know anybody here at all,” he said. “I guess I took a chance to come here, but coach Rudolph (MSU head coach Paul Rudolph) took a chance on me. The coaches and the players took me in.”

Over the course of two seasons, Taylor was nearly unstoppable in the tough Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. He caught a school-record 90 passes for 1,147 yards in 2007 as a freshman and was named All-American second team. He followed that up with 74 catches for 667 yards in 2008.

But he was dismissed from the team before the 2009 season and was serching for more than just a new foot-ball team.

“I believe that part of my life is over with,” he said. “I have matured since then. I understand now that I took fooball for granted. I have been playing football since I was five and it was really all I knew. I know I am getting a second chance here.

“As tough as it was to sit out last year, coach said it was

the best thing for me to make sure I graduate on time. I should be done in May (Corporate Fitness). It isn’t nec-essarily how I thought (his career) would go, but it has been a great experience here in Minot so far. Not a lot of people get the opportunity to see the country and play football.”

Taylor wasted little time to make an impact for MSU this season, catching eight passes for 55 yards in the Beavers’ 27-0 loss to Bemidji last week to open the sea-son. But he isn’t worried about personal accolades.

“I just want to help in any way possible. If kicking is what the coaches ask me to do, then I’ll kick, if it is catching passes, then that’s what I’ll do.”
