TRADITION IN TRANSITION: Minot State is in its third season of a four-year transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. MSU advanced to Year Three Provisional status in July and is expected to complete the transition in July 2012. Minot State was selected to join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2012-13.

RECORDS: MSU enters the week’s play at 3-4-0 overall. Bismarck State is 1-8 overall and 1-7 in Mon-Dak play, while Rocky Mountain College is 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the Frontier Conference

COACHES CORNER: Minot State’s head coach Jason Spain is in his second season after starting the MSU women’s soccer pro-gram last season. He is 12-11-3 overall. Mel Fishcher is the head coach at BSC. Richard Duffy is in his 10th season at the helm of RMC’s women’s team and has an 83-69-6 record.

FOLLOW THE BEAVERS: The game will have live video broadcast on the Minot State UStream channel at (www.ustream.tv/channel/minotstatebeavers). The game also will have live stats that can be accessed at (www.msubeavers.com).

RANKINGS: None of the three teams were ranked in their respective national or regional polls.

RECENT HISTORY: MSU lost two more close matches as they fell 2-0 to the University of Mary and 1-0 to Augustana College last week. The Mystics got their first win of the season, knocking off Dakota County Technical College 2-1 on Saturday. RMC defeated the College of Idaho 4-2 to extend its winning streak four games.

OVERALL SERIES: Minot State and Bismarck State have not played a regular season contest in soccer. The Battlin’ Bears have a 2-0 lead on MSU in the series as they swept a pair of meeting in MSU’s inaugural season.

NOTING THE MYSTICS: Bismarck State College has allowed 44 goals in nine games and a huge amount of shots. The Mystics have given up 196 shots so far this season… Allison Malm has been as busy as anybody as the BSC goalkeeper, turning away 152 shots so far… Monica Rustvang has scored two of the four Mystics’ goals… Of the 13 players on the Mystics roster, 10 are from either Bismarck, N.D. or Mandan, N.D.

Jason Spain was chosen to start the Minot State University women’s soccer program, beginning with the university’s inagural season in 2010.

He quickly solidified the new team as his MSU squad went 9-7-3 in its inagural season, advancing to the regional of the NAIA women’s soccer national playoffs.

Spain comes to Minot State after building Yuba College into a junior college powerhouse. Spain started the Yuba College soccer program in 1997, going 181-45-22 in 12 years with the women’s program and 51-17-19 in four seasons with the men’s team.

The Yuba College women’s program won seven Bay Valley Confer-ence titles, made at least the sweet sixteen level all 12 seasons and was the No. 1 ranked junior college in the nation after a 21-0-0 start in 2006. Spain coached 39 Academic All-Conference student ath-letes, 10 All-West selections and six All-Americans while at Yuba.

While his collegiate coaching numbers are impressive, they pale in comparison to his prep. Spain coached Sutter Union High School (Calif.) to a 229-29-29 record, winning 11 conference titles, seven section titles and set records in 2005 and 2007 for allowing zero goals during the season. He was named Appeal Democrat Varsity Girls Coach of the Year six times. Sutter Union set a California record of 97 straight wins, second longest in the nation.

Spain served as the Director of the Azzurri Soccer Club from 1999 until moving to North Dakota. During his time with Azzurri, the Girls Under 18 team was ranked as high as No. 3 in Northern California, the Girls Under 14 team won a State Cup and the Boys Under 16 and Girls Under 19 teams each went to the state finals.

Spain played soccer for Thomas Downey High School, Stockton United Soccer Club, Modesto Ajax Soccer Club, Modesto Junior College, Humboldt State University and Westminster College, where he earned All West Region honors in 1995.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History/Education from Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Conn.

MINOT, N.D. — Minot State University junior Shan-non Walsh isn’t the biggest player on her team.

When it comes to physical play, however, Walsh doesn’t back down from anyone — even when it comes to the bigger, stronger NCAA Division II player the Beavers are matching up against this year.

“That’s probably the biggest difference between the NAIA and NCAA is there are bigger girls,” she said. “It makes it a little more difficult, but I try to encourage our team that they aren’t going to back down. You have to be physical if you want the ball.”

That tenacity has helped Walsh, a former Minot High School star, to be one of the top players on the MSU squad. She can be an offensive threat, as she has score a goal and is third on the team in shots taken, but it is the little things that makes her tough to defend.

“I don’t mind getting in there and fighting for the ball,” Walsh said.

Walsh didn’t start out at Minot State as there wasn’t a Minot State to start with as she graduated from MHS. While she had heard talk of the Beavers adding soccer, it was just talk. So she took her talents to Jamestown College for one season. After MSU added the program and hired coach Jason Spain, Walsh began to think about transferring.

“I played with Jason’s team over the summer and I knew the way he approached the game was something I would like,” she said. “I like him as a coach. He doesn’t like to lose.”

So Walsh became one of the Beavers’ first signings in its first season of existance. While she expected some bumps along the way, the team surprised her with a solid first year.

“Yeah, I didn’t know what to expect. I was surprised just how successful we were right away,” Walsh said. “We were better than I thought.”

Which makes the Beavers current four-match losing streak even tougher to handle for Walsh, who shares her

coach’s dislike for losing.“We have a lot of freshmen and are redshirting some

good players, so it has been a little tough this year,” she said. “We need to get some wins and get our confidense back.”

Being one of the few upperclassmen has allowed Walsh to come out of her shell a bit this year.

“I have tried to be a more vocal leader. Coach taold me I needed to be,” Walsh said. “You have to explain to the younger players that you have to work hard at this level. It isn’t just going to come to you.”
