mings led two scoring drives in the Jayhawks utile comeback against OklahomaState, coach Charlie Weis is splitting time between his redshirt reshman andDayne Crist. With three quarterbacks in the mix Christian Matthews is stillrunning the Jayhawk o ense Weis will have a lot more room to get creativeagainst a tough Sooners de ense.

deFeNseI you happen to see what looks like a zombie dragging himsel through campus,

dont panic, its most likely a very sleep-deprived Dave Campo. The rst-year Kansasde ensive coordinator has had a tremendous e ect on this years team holdingboth TCU and Oklahoma State to their lowest point totals o the season. For the thirdstraight week hell be acing one o the nations top o enses. Get some rest, coach.

Coach Weis decision to split time between Crist and Cummingsmay prove to be the best option. It was obvious that somethingneeded to change, but giving Cummings his rst career start onthe road against an Oklahoma team that just beat Texas out othe rankings wouldnt have been good or anyone but Sooners ans.Now both quarterbacks will not just be playing to win, but also toeliminate the other rom claiming the starting role.

    aT a GLaNce

I Michael Cummings can per-orm in Norman, Okla., like he did

in Lawrence and i Tony Piersonis healthy Charlie Weis maybe a little giddy come Saturday. For a coach who constantly firtswith trick plays it would be hardnot to think the options that Crist,Cummings and Matthews open upwont lead to more imaginativeplay calling.

cOachINGThis one comes down to a tie and

right ully so. Both Michael Cummingsand Dayne Crist will have all eyeson them as each tries to claim thestarting quarterback role or the Jay-hawks. In Crists last outing he com-pleted 10 o 22 passes or 136-yards,while Cummings completed 5-10 or75-yards and a touchdown. Both willneed to be better to give the Jayhawksa shot against the Sooners, but theKansas quarterback battle might make

    or an equally compelling match.

A ter taking a week-long hiatus to allowor some healing and to give other kick-

ers a chance Ron Doherty is returning topunting duties or Kansas. Nick Prolago willstill be handling kicko s and extra points, but the glaring hole that is kicking eld goalsis still a costly concern or Kansas. With ano ense ranked 109 out o 120 in the FBS, the Jayhawks cant be leaving any points on the

    eld.

How will the change in quarterbacks a ect the running backs?Charlie Weis made note at his Tuesday press con erence that Kansas was a run-

rst team. Will one quarterback avor that system over another? And or that matter, can Cummings hold his own against the second-best de ense

in the Big 12?Cummings has only played in situations with little pressure. How will he play now

that he is expected to help Kansas win?

One o the Kansas quarterbacksemerges rom the rest. That couldmean Dayne Crist, Michael Cum-mings or even Christian Matthewsrunning the Jayhawk ormation. The Jayhawks have done a great jobat limiting opponents scoring, nowthey just need to put together pointsthemselves.

Since de eating South Dakota State in week one,Kansas has not had much momentum to ride. Thatall changed with a couple o touchdowns late againstOklahoma State. It was the rst time all season the Jayhawks ended the game on a higher note than theiropponent, and it may be the best thing Kansas has go-ing right now.

A ter coming in as a backup in the frst three games, running back Damien Williamshas evolved into a starter and has made an impact. Williams ran or a career-high 167yards against Texas last week. Hes rushed or over 500 yards and six touchdowns thisyear. With Williams recent rise, expect the Sooners to eed him the ball a lot against Kan-sas. Fullback Trey Millard may also get in on the action; hes been active with 23 touches

or 264 yards, which is rare or ullbacks in ootball nowadays. The o ense still revolvesaround quarterback Landry Jones. Hes been a little more quiet on the feld than he hasin previous seasons but still gets the job done to help Oklahoma win.

DeFeNSeOklahomas de ense is second in the Big 12 and is one o the best in the nation.

The Sooners are seventh in the nation in frst downs allowed and 14th in totalde ense. De ensive backs Tony Je erson, Javon Harris and Aaron Colvin are the toptacklers on the team. Oklahomas 4-2-5 nickel package has brought them a lot ogood ortune this season. Harris and Colbin co-lead the team in interceptions withtwo. Even though the Sooners are unaware o who the starting quarterback is orKansas this Saturday, they will still come out with the same mentality and will dovery little to adjust i and when a quarterback change is made.

Stoops has a lot o strengths on his ootball team each season, and this years team is no exception. Oklahomas o ense is rankedf th in the Big 12 and has been sparked by the rushing game. Thede ense stands tall at second in the con erence. Stoops and hissta have also stressed the importance o special teams, which iscurrently in the top three in the Big 12 in kicko return and puntreturn average.

Bob Stoops played de ensive backat Iowa rom 1979 to 1982. Sevenyears a ter playing or the Hawkeyes,Stoops took a job with Kansas StateUniversity as a de ensive assistantunder Bill Snyder. He also spent threeseasons at the University o Floridaas a de ensive coordinator or SteveSpurriers sta . A ter he learned romsome o the best in Snyder and Spur-rier, Stoops took a job as the headcoach o Oklahoma in 1999 and is inhis 14th season with the Sooners.

    cOAchING

Backup quarterback Blake Bellcould be one o the most notablebackup quarterbacks in college oot-ball today. While his fve-o -sevenpasses or 74 yards arent eye-grab-bing statistics, his rushing numbersare doing all the talking. Oklahomahas a lot o plays or Bell that involvehim in short-yardage situations. Heo ten helps his team get a frst down, and other times he takes the ball to the end zone. Nicknamedthe Belldozer, Bell leads the team in rushing touchdowns withseven on the year.

    PLAYeR tO WAtch

Kicker Michael Hunnicutt missed two extra pointattempts and one feld goal this season, but he is stillsecond in the Big 12 among all kickers in scoring with46 points on the season. Roy Finch and Brennan Clayhave handled the kicko returns and average 26.6yards per return. On punt returns, Justin Brown andKenny Stills have done a good job trying to give Okla-homas o ense good feld position as they average16.3 yards per punt return.

Will Oklahomas defense be ready for both Kansas quarterbacks?

Kansas coach Charlie Weis said both o his quarterbacks will play this Saturdayagainst Oklahoma. But Oklahoma wont know who will start until game time. That

orced the Sooners to spend all week preparing or both quarterbacks. Dayne Cristand Michael Cummings are di erent in their own way, giving Oklahoma de ensivecoordinator Mike Stoops a lot to prepare or be ore Saturdays match.

Oklahoma shuts down Kansas in thesecond hal . In last years meeting, Okla-homa cruised in the second hal againstKansas, 20-0. The Sooners eventuallywent on to win by 30. The Jayhawks havestruggled in the second hal this seasonuntil last week against Oklahoma State.I Kansas carries over its second-hal mo-mentum to Norman and expands it to ourquarters, ans might be in or an excitinggame.
