The second game, one week later in Crookston, had Concordia overcoming a 31 deficit midway through the third period to claim a 54 win in overtime. Perry once again proved to be a differencemaker for the Cobbers, scoring two goals in the final period. He scored the gametying goal with 1:01 left on the clock in the final frame. In 200506, the Cobbers started with four straight wins but were then only able to win one more time in their next 21 games. In order to make the turn from a team that struggled in conference play to one that will contend for a spot in the fiveteam MIAC playoffs, Concordia head coach Steve Baumgartner, who will be entering his 21st season behind the bench, will be hoping that his bumper crop of freshmen last season will turn into a solid corps of established players this year. The Cobbers had 18 firstyear players on the roster last year and the best thing about that fact is they will all be sophomores this season. A group of 11 sophomores returns this year and will provide the backbone of a team looking for its first conference victory since the end of the 200405 campaign. Despite the leaguewin drought, optimism can be seen throughout the Cobber camp. Concordia will have a slew of solid forwards and a trio of returning capable blueliners to go along with their leading goaltender from a year ago. Senior cocaptain Dan Perry will lead the scoring brigade for Concordia. He led the team in scoring in 200506 with 19 points and his 65, 220 lb frame makes him a sizable force around the net at all times. He will be joined by fellow captain Tyler Neu who had four goals and six assists last year but was second on the team in power play goals with three. Baumgartner will also look for the Moorhead duo of Ryan Clukey and Cory Johnson to up their totals from a year ago. Clukey had nine points, while Johnson finished with seven after playing in only 15 games because of his duty with the Concordia football team. Senior defenseman Mark Buchholz will return for his fourth season as one of the teams’ top defensive specialists. Buchholz is a formidable twoway player who can also put points on the board. Last year he finished second on the team in scoring and led the team in assists. He had all of his points from his 14 assists in 200506. Along with Buchholz, Concordia will feature the Babich twins. Both players will be aided by a year of experience in the MIAC. Chris and Carl Babich were named the team’s CoRookies of the Year in 200506 and will need to step up their play this season if the Cobbers are to contend for a playoff spot. Goaltending will once again be a key issue for the Cobbers. Not since the days of twotime AllAmerican Bryan Howard in 200001 has Concordia had a netminder that consistently played at a high level for an entire season. There have been flashes of brilliance between the pipes in the seasons since, but nothing that has helped the Cobbers get back into the upper echelon of MIAC teams. Sophomore Jeremy Boniface will be the top returning candidate for Concordia. He started 15 games last year and led the team with a 5.71 goals against average. Two other goalies will also be thrown into the mix. Josh Hand played in only five games last year as a freshman and had a 11 record. Firstyear goalie Mike Persson will be the one unknown and could push both returners for the top spot.

GAMEDAY GAME NOTES COBBER SEASON PREVIEW The 200607 Concordia men’s hockey team will be hoping that a year of experience will lead to a significant leap in conference victories and a more consistent performance on the ice from the beginning of the season to the end.

COBBER LAST GAME RECAP Concordia 3 at Northland College (Wis.) 2 – Saturday Nov. 4 Concordia used the strength of two Alec Holen goals to beat Northland 32 on Saturday and claim the series sweep in the opening games of the 200607 season for both teams. The sweep marks the second straight season that the Cobbers have started the year with a sweep over the Lumberjack.

Holen, who scored the gamewinning goal with 5:07 left in the third period, was part of an offense that put up 59 shots in the game. That total is the highest singlegame shot total since before the 200001 season.

Concordia's defense once again did a solid job of holding the Lumberjack offense in check. The Cobbers gave up only two goals in the game the only two allowed the entire weekend. Freshman Mike Persson made the most of his first collegiate start for Concordia. He turned aside 29 shots to earn the victory.

The game didn't start out as planned for the Cobbers as they allowed a goal in the first 35 seconds of play. That goal gave the Lumberjacks their only lead of the series and it would last for only five minutes. Concordia tied the game on the first of their two power play goals when Ryan Clukey notched his first goal of the year. Holen completed the pair of first period power play goals when he scored with 8:21 remaining in the opening frame.

After a scoreless second period, the Lumberjacks tied the game with 13:05 left in the final period. That left Holen to come through with the gamewinner. He tallied his second goal of the game after taking a feed from Dan Perry and Clukey and fired the puck past Northland goalie Bo Storozuk.

Holen finished the series by having a hand in all four Cobber goals. He had an assist in Friday night's game and then added two goals and an assist on Saturday. Clukey had a twopoint game on Saturday to help out the cause.

For the game, Concordia outshot Northland 5931. The game featured 27 penalties and 54 penalty minutes.

GOLDEN EAGLE 2006 SEASON PREVIEW (Courtesy of USCHO.com) Outlook: The Golden Eagles are only two seasons removed from backto back MCHA tournament championships. After falling on harder times over the past to years, Crookston will attempt to get back to the top with vastly revamped lineup. The Golden Eagles are only two seasons removed from backtoback MCHA tournament championships. After falling on harder times over the past to years, MinnesotaCrookston will attempt to get back to the top with vastly revamped lineup. The Golden Eagles will welcome 21 new faces to this season's lineup. Good news, however, is that three of Crookston's top four scorers are among those who do return for the 200607 campaign. Among these are seniors Teal Plaine and Ryan Leadens, who — along with juniors Matt Hann and Brent Groenke — will be looking to jump start an offense that ranked fifth in the MCHA with 3.55 goals per game last season.

Defensively, the Crookston defense ranked last in the MCHA in 0506, allowing goals at a rate of 5.55 per game. The first line of defense for a team looking to improve defensively is the return of two goalies who both have earned valuable MCHA experience. Senior Kyle Knudsen (151, 5.63, .850) and junior Jaden Isakson (350, 5.77, .825) will be expected to carry the load and protect an unproven defensive unit. On defense, the Golden Eagle do return juniors Ryan Tucker (279) and Kyle Sponholtz (022), but they are the only players to return who did see significant time on defense last season.

As the only Division II team in the MCHA, and therefore ineligible for the NCAA Division III tournament, Crookston is often unwarrantedly labeled as being "that other team." With the current changes occurring in the MCHA however, along with their recent application for Division III status, the Golden Eagles and their history of success are back with a newlook team looking to jump back into the conference race — and fully into the world of Division III hockey.
