Blake Trenbeath threw a threehitter in the first game to earn the win and Adam Padrnons allowed just one hit in the final six innings to pick up the victory in game 2 for Concordia as both senior pitchers went the distance. In the opener, Trenbeath held the Knights scoreless until the seventh inning as he allowed single hits in the first, third and seventh innings. At one point during the game he retired 11 consecutive Carleton batters. Concordia broke open the scoreless tie in the fifth inning when they scored a pair of unearned runs on two hits and one costly defensive error. The Cobbers tacked on three more in the sixth inning. In the game, Concordia outhit the Knights 53 and neither team collected an extrabase hit. The second game started with a bang as Concordia scored twice in the top of the first and Carleton countered with a fivespot in the bottom of the inning. Trailing 52, Concordia used a monster, eightrun fifth inning to run away with the game. In the fifth, the Cobbers had eight hits and had 14 hitters come to the plate. All eight runs were scored without the benefit of an extra base hit. Cobber Gameday Profile–#25 Zach Johnson Year: Senior Position: Outfield Height: 62 Weight: 175 B/T: R/L Hometown: LeSueur, Minn. GAMEDAY NOTES Concordia is fresh off a fourday break that saw the team complete the academic year. The Cobbers are now set to play eight games in the next seven days to finish off the season. CC still has a chance to reach the .500 mark in conference play as they will compete against four of the bottom six teams in the league during that stretch. Cobber senior outfielder Brian Knoblauch was named the MIAC Player of the Week on Monday. Knoblauch hit .500 in the team’s six games last week. It is the first time this season that a Concordia player has garnered the weekly league honor. It was also the first time in his career that Knoblauch won Player of the Week honors. Besides hitting .500 for the week, he finished with a .937 slugging percentage and an onbase percentage of .619. Of his eight hits, he collected four doubles and one home run. He also walked three times and was beaned once. Knoblauch isn’t the only Cobber who is on a hot streak at the plate. Junior third baseman Matt Youngquist connected on his first collegiate home run against St. John’s on Monday and finished the day by going 4for7. He has now hit safely in the past four games and six of the last eight. He also upped his season average to .296. He leads the team in multipleRBI games (5) and is tied for the team lead in multiplehit games (7). Concordia leadoff hitter Jake Krause has a sixgame hitting streak. During that time he is hitting .400 and has scored five runs. He has also only committed two errors in 30 chances during that stretch. CC junior middle relief pitcher Darrin Carlson continues to give pitching coach Mike Reese quality innings when the team needs them the most. On Monday he went 4.1 innings in the first game against St. John’s and only allowed one earned run. In his past two outings, he has pitched 9.1 innings, allowed only one earned run and lowered his team leading ERA to 3.18. The Cobbers’ fortunes this season have hinged on the first couple of innings of play. CC is 212 when they trail after the third inning. On the other side, they are 45 when leading after three innings. During the first two innings of play Concordia is getting outscored 5230. That is not the biggest run discrepancy. That comes in the sixth inning where the Cobbers have been outscored 276. Carleton enters today’s doubleheader on a fivegame losing streak, their longest losing skid of the season. The Knights were swept by Macalester last Saturday and then dropped a pair to crosstown rival St. Olaf on Tuesday. Today’s doubleheader marks only the third time all season that Carleton is playing a conference on the road. The Knights have split their other two road twinbills at Augsburg and Bethel. Carleton is glad to be on the road and away from Knights Field. The Knights are a meager 17 at home this season as compared to 107 in games played outside the Northfield city limits. Carleton needs only three more wins to post its highest win total since 1991, when the Knights won 24 games and captured the conference title with a 164 mark. The Knights started the season by winning their first four games. The 40 start marked the first time in 75 seasons that they had started a year 40. Carleton then went 62 in their first eight games to record their best eightgame start since the 1959 campaign. In the Knights’ win over Augsburg on Apr. 18, Nick Shepard (Jr./New York/Fieldston School) executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to tie the game and the Knights eventually scored seven runs in the seventh inning to rally past the Auggies, 72.

COBBER LAST GAME RECAP MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/23/07) If it were two football games against St. John's, the Cobber defense would be receiving accolades for holding the vaunted Johnnie offense to only two touchdowns and a field goal. Unfortunately it is the spring and the Concordia defense allowed SJU to score 17 runs in a 101, 73 doubleheader sweep over CC on Monday in Moorhead.

The first game was over by the end of the second inning. St. John's scored four runs in the first inning and three more in the second to seize control of the opener. They were able to hit the ball all over the park in the opening two frames as they combined for six of their 12 hits in the game. SJU then added single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Concordia's lone run in the opener came in the sixth inning when Matt Youngquist connected on his first collegiate home run.

The Cobbers accounted for six hits in the first game. Unfortunately the defense committed four errors that led to three unearned runs. Sophomore pitcher Darrin Carlson once again proved to be an inningeater as he worked 4.1 innings in middle relief. He allowed only one earned run during that time. In his past two outings, he has pitched 9.1 innings, allowed only one earned run and lowered his teamleading ERA to 3.18.

The second game was close all the way until the end. Concordia grabbed a 20 lead in the bottom of the second inning before SJU countered with three runs in the top of the third to take a 32 lead. The Cobbers evened the score in the bottom of the frame. The 33 deadlock would last until the top of the sixth inning when St. John's scored four runs. The big blow in the decisive sixth came off the bat of Shawn Schoenberg who pounded out his second home run of the series to put SJU in the lead at 53.

Concordia was outhit 87 in the nightcap. CC starting pitcher Eddie Massee lasted until the sixth inning. The freshman hurler allowed all seven runs and struck out two. At one point at the end of the fifth inning he had retired seven straight Johnnie batters. At the plate, Youngquist continued his hot hand against SJU pitching. He went 2for4 in the second game and finished the series 4for7 and upped his season average to .296.

KNIGHTS LAST SERIES RECAP (Courtesy of Carleton SID) NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Ethan Guevin allowed only six hits and two runs in recording a completegame effort against sixthranked St. Olaf College, but Alex Beckman matched Guevin and then some by tossing a twohit shutout at the Knights in a 20 Ole victory at Knights Field. The visitors exploded for 17 hits in game two in cruising past the Knights 115.

Andrew Schmiesing was 3for3 with a double and three runs scored in game two for St. Olaf (252, 131 MIAC), which moved to sixth in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association/Division III top 25 earlier in the day.

The opener was a pitching duel between Guevin and Beckman. The Oles scored both their runs in the second as Carson Jones tripled and scored on a groundout. Patrick Wadzinski doubled with one out and came around to score on another groundout. Beckman, meanwhile, kept the Knights at bay, setting down 14 of the final 15 batters he faced in picking up his second win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Oles took a 20 lead in the third on RBI singles from Chris Terrazas and Josh Schultheis. Carleton rookie Aaron Troyansky kept the highpowered Oles in check until they exploded for a fourrun fifth inning, highlighted by Jones' tworun shot. The Knights got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a hit and Ole error, but the Oles erupted for five more runs in the sixth, fueled by some sloppy defensive play from Carleton, two walks and a hit batter.

The Knights tacked on three runs in the seventh on a Russ Fujisawa RBI double, a Doug Sylvester RBI groundout and Rob Trettin's runscoring double. Guevin was Carleton's hitting star in game two, going 2for3 with a run scored.
