Conference/Membership AffiliationSince the 1985-86 school year, Saint Benedict has been a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on the Division III level and a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The MIAC, which was founded in 1920 and sponsors championships in 25 teams, 13 for men and 12 for wom-en, is recognized as one of the toughest NCAA Division III women’s and men’s intercollegiate athletic conferences in the country. The MIAC is a conference in which the athletes are students first, yet they still have the opportu-nity to reach any height to which their athletic abilities take them. As a component of NCAA Division III, no institution in the MIAC offers any athletic scholarships.

MIAC teams compete in several formats. Among these are round-robin play, round-robin tournaments and championship meets or tournaments.

Leadership for Change Wisdom for a Lifetime

The College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., was founded by Benedictine Sisters in 1913. The college was uniquely and specifically formed by women for women. Saint Benedict was the 13th women’s college in the United States and today is one of only 64 women’s colleges in the country. Whether in the classroom, at a sporting event, or living in the residence halls, CSB seeks to incorporate learning experiences inspired by the Catholic and Benedictine tradition.

The Saint Benedict experience creates a sense of community rarely seen at other colleges. It provides a safe and comfortable environment ideal for inquiring, learning and growing.

Located in the heart of central Minnesota lake country and surrounded by 3,500 acres of pure forests and wholesome prairies, Saint Benedict is just minutes away from the St. Cloud metro area and an hour drive from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Students experience the benefits of small town modesty, while enjoying the convenient access of a big city.

The College of Saint Benedict has a unique partnership with Saint John’s University, a men’s college located four miles away. The schools are nationally recognized Catholic liberal arts colleges and ranked as two of the top three Catholic colleges in the nation. We share one academic program, and students attend classes together on both campuses. This integrated learning experience combines a challenging academic program with extensive opportunities for international study, leadership, service learning, spiritual growth, and cultural and athletic involvement.

Both schools are dedicated to the development of a person as a whole. Offering single-gender and co-educational experiences, each strive to meet the distinct needs of women and men. Another advantage of this partnership is the expansion of resources for both institutions. CSB and SJU provide the education and opportunities of a large university accompanied with the individual attention of a small private college.

Saint Benedict strives to present students with opportunities to explore, stretch, and challenge their personal excellence. By developing their intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical helath, our goal is to enable every woman to achieve her utmost potential.

The College of Saint Benedict’s mission is to foster integrated learning, exceptional leadership for change, and wisdom for a lifetime.

Theresa Naumann begins her third year as an assistant coach for the Blazers. A four-year volleyball player at CSB, Naumann was a senior captain for the Blazers and averaged 0.63 blocks per game her junior and senior years. She graduated in 2008 with a degree in nutrition.

A native of Columbia Heights, Minn., Naumann is a 2004 graduate of Totino-

Grace High School, where she was a two-time all-conference selection in volleyball and captained her volleyball, basketball, and softball teams. Naumann works as an admission representative at CSB/SJU.

Amanda Anderson enters her ninth year with the Blazer volleyball team as an assistant coach in 2012. She provides extensive experience in coaching and playing volleyball at the collegiate level.

Anderson’s resume has depth in coaching experience. In 2003-04 Anderson was the head coach at Central Cass High School and has coached numerous

camps across Minnesota and North Dakota including North Dakota State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State.

Anderson was a member of the North Dakota State women’s volleyball team from 1999-2002. The four year letter winner helped guide the Bison to a 29-3 overall record her senior year.

A 2003 graduate of North Dakota State University, Anderson received a Bachelor of Science degree in human performance and fitness, with a minor in business and received a Master of Science degree in sports administration from St. Cloud State University in 2008.

Along with her coaching responsibilities, Anderson serves as assistant campus recreation director at CSB.

Anderson is married to Erik Anderson, who is employed by Northland Capital in St. Cloud, Minn. They have been married for six years, have one daughter and are expecting their second this fall.

Head coach Nicole Hess begins her third season as head coach of the Blazer volleyball team in 2012.

In her second season as head coach, Hess led the Blazers to an 8-3 MIAC record with an 18-13 overall mark. The Blazers tied for third place in the MIAC and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. On Nov. 1, 2011, Hess earned

her 100th career coaching victory with a 3-1 win over Gustavus in the first round of the MIAC playoffs.

During her first year as head coach, Hess led the Blazers to a 6-5 MIAC record and 18-12 overall mark, which clinched a MIAC Playoff berth. CSB upended Saint Mary’s 3-1 in the first round but fell to eventual conference champion St. Olaf 3-2 in the semifinals.

Hess has an overall head coaching record of 100-157 (.389) and a MIAC record of 29-70 (.293). She inherited a rebuilding program at St. Catherine in 2003 and made great progress in her seven seasons there. During the last two seasons the Wildcats won more than 10 games for the first time since 1996.

As a collegiate player, Hess achieved success as a four-time All-MIAC honoree at St. Olaf College. She was a three-time member of the All-Region team and in 2001 was selected to the AVCA All-America second team. Hess holds school records in career kills (2,041), career hitting percentage (.352), kills in a season (573) and hitting percentage in a season (.392). She graduated from St. Olaf in 2002 with a Bachelor’s Degree in social studies education. Prior to coaching at St. Catherine, Hess was an assistant volleyball coach at the University of St. Thomas for one season, in which they won the MIAC Championship.

Hess believes discipline is integral to any successful program. Trust, respect and integrity are equally as important as physical strength and talent. Hess develops a supportive, yet challenging environment in which her teams can grow. Every practice, game and season is an opportunity to develop individually and collectively.

Along with her head coaching position, Hess is an assistant athletic director at CSB. She is married to Paul Hess, who is employed by Milacron based in Cincinnati, Ohio. They have been married for nine years and have three children – two sons and one daughter.

The 1970’s were a time of change, revolution, and transformation. Increased influence of the women’s movement, heightened concern over the environment, and improved space exploration were just a few of the headlines.

Saint Benedict was changing too.

In the 1976-77 season, the Saint Benedict volleyball team decided they would like their colors to be red and white. Known as the Bennies of the College of Saint Benedict, they also decided they wanted a new moniker. So, they held a contest to find a new nickname.

CSB students were invited to submit ideas, and student-athletes selected the one they liked best.

“Blazers,” submitted by first-year student Mary Haffner, was chosen as the official sports name. This was a perfect fit as it flawlessly described the hard work, determination, and success of the trailblazing women who founded the college.

These sisters “blazed” their way through a field of uncertainty and unknown land to settle in Minnesota in 1856. They went on to establish the largest Benedictine community in the United States. They also built hundreds of hospitals, schools, orphanages -- and the College of Saint Benedict in 1913.

Blazers pays tribute to the courageous, strong, and bold women of the past and gives encouragement and pride to the women of the future.

Under the direction of second-year head coach Nicole Hess, the Blazers finished 18-3 overall and 8-3 in the MIAC. With Hess earning her 100th career coaching victory while adding another 1,000 kill member to the Blazer records as the team advanced to the NCAA tournament, the Blazers undeniably had a great season.

At the start of the season, the Blazers had an overall record of 2-4. They took a turn for the best over the next 14 games, dropping only two. In October, the Blazers traveled to Michigan to participate in the Midwest Invitational, and there the team faced fierce competition and came out 1-4. November welcomed the annual MIAC tournament where the Blazers first played Gustavus Adolphus College at home and won 3-1, giving Coach Hess her 100th career coaching victory. The Blazers advanced to the semifinals, where they were eventually defeated by Concordia College, 3-0. Saint Benedict earned an at large bid to the NCAA tournament where they played St. Scholastica in the first round. The Blazers opened up a 2-1 lead over the Saints, but suffered the loss in a close 3-2 match in Moorhead, Minn. to end

the season.

Saint Benedict’s success on the court was shown through the leadership of many players. Senior Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, Minn., Forest Lake) appeared in 113 sets last season, posting 355 kills (10th in the MIAC) and 270 digs. She became the 11th player in Blazer history to reach 1,000 kills and ended her career fourth all-time with 1,252. She also set a new CSB standard for games played and because of her accomplishments, was named team MVP along her with her All-Conference selection.

Sophomore libero Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn., Maple Lake) led the team in digs (599), with an average of 5.12 per set. She ended the season ranked fifth in school history in libero digs, and finished the season ranked third in the MIAC. Rachel received the Best Defensive Player award for CSB last season.

First-year Alexa Rinde (Minnetonka, Minn., Orono) proved her strength for the Blazers with 338 kills, ranking second overall for the team and was named Best Offensive Player and a was an All-Conference selection.

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team enters the 2012 season looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in six years. Saint Benedict earned an at large bid to the tournament last season, falling 3-2 to St. Scholastica in the first round. The Blazers finished the season with an 18-13 overall record, and went 8-3 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. Ten games into the season the Blazers went on a roll, going 9-1 after the Blazer Invite, which included a 6-1 start to MIAC play. A large part of the Blazers success was the hard-hitting tandem of senior Chelsie Sobieck and first-year Alexa Rinde. Together they compiled 693 kills and were named to the MIAC All-Conference team.

Saint Benedict’s success last season came in one of the top Division III conferences in the country. The Blazers were one of four MIAC teams to advance to the NCAA Tournament last season, along with Bethel, Concordia, and St. Thomas. During conference play, CSB led the MIAC in assists (544) and kills (593).

The Blazers must replace Sobiek in 2012, who captained the Blazers in her senior season. She graduated as the CSB all-time leader in games played and became the 11th member to join the 1,000 kill club. Saint Benedict will look to the leadership of junior Lexi Alm, alongside last years’ rookie sensation Rinde. Alm and Rinde produced 338 and 325 kills respectively in 2011. Rinde hit her stride in MIAC play, finishing third in league games in both hitting percentage (.289) and kills (151).

Heading into 2012, the Blazers received mention in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 poll, earning 30 points to sit just outside the top-25. The honor comes as Saint Benedict returns much of its offensive power that ranked them first in the conference in both kills and assists. Among this group were three athletes that each produced over 100 kills in 2011: sophomores Taya Kockelman and Callie Neumann, and junior Kendra Coleman. Returning to run the Blazer offense is junior setter Kathryn Gaydos and Kockelman. Kockelman compiled 838 assists her rookie season at CSB and helped lead the Blazers to the top of the MIAC in assists. Anchoring the Blazer defense will be junior libero Chelsea Rachel, who finished the 2011 season ranked third in the conference with 599 digs.

A tough overall schedule does the Blazers no favors this season. The MIAC will be tough as always and will offer strong competition. Rival St. Thomas returns Defensive Player-of-the-Year, senior Kaitlain Wachter, and Rookie-of-the-Year Kelly Foley. Defending co-champions St. Thomas and Concordia each advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament, with St. Thomas making it to the Elite Eight. Four conference teams won 20 or more games last season, with St. Thomas leading the pack with 32 wins while Concordia was a close runner up at 27. Bethel finished with 23 and Gustavus rounded out the group with 20.

In addition to a tough MIAC schedule, the Blazers face four non-conference teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2011. Saint Benedict will play UW-Stevens Point three times, St. Scholastica twice, Northwestern twice, and UW-Eau Claire once. The Blazers begin their 2012 campaign at 5:15 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 31, against the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Eau Claire, Wis.

Throughout this coming academic year, over 300 Saint Benedict student-athletes will be part of the Blazer family, and all students on both campuses will cheer on the Blazers in competition, learn with them in the classroom, and grow with them as a member of the community. As Blazers, our women are empowered to develop their physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual growth. They are leaders, teammates, and winners on and off the court, the field, the rink, or the course.

The lifelong memories and passion for sports are what drive our student-athletes to be Blazers—women who are courageous, strong, and bold. And the support of the Blazer Backers makes those experiences possible.

As a Blazer Backer, you have the chance to be a fundamental part of our athletes’ success. Your commitment is vital in sustaining our winning tradition—one we can all be proud of! Please join the crowd as a Blazer Backer during the 2011-12 academic year with a gift today.

Join the Blazer team!
