Ceramics classes are held workshop style, so if you have any ideas you have been thinking over, now would be the time to express them in clay. We will utilize our facility to the max, from the pottery wheel to hand-building to extruding, and even slab rolling to create reliefs. Fees cover the cost of your first bag of clay. It is important to attend the first class, where safety procedures and a material list will be discussed.

Ceramic Pit Fired Clay WorkshopPART 1: Saturday April 14, we will meet at Studio One Art Center and make simple clay pots or masks. Students will then learn how to create a burnished effect on their vessels. PART 2: Saturday May 5th, students will meet at Studio One and then caravan to Dillon Beach. We will fire ceramic pieces in a sand pit using a variety of dry seaweed for special effects. Every participant is expected to bring firewood. Family and friends are welcome on the day of firing. Please, bring food to share. Dogs are allowed on Dillon Beach.

Learn how to make a large variety of ceramic tiles while exploring different colors, patterns, and shapes. There is a durability of clay tiles that allow for mounting indoors or outdoors, with the proper sealant. Students are encour-aged to bring their own old towel, ruler, pencil, and sketchbook. Please bring any commercial tiles (glazed or unglazed) for references to the first class.

Children who enjoy putting their hands in the garden soil will enjoy the feel of clay. Aside from the fun of creating ceramic items on the wheel, your child’s’ sense of hand eye coordination will be enhanced. Knowledge about the entire process from gooey clay to glazed art work will delight children. All materials provided.

CartoneriaThe ability to create sculptures from paper is known as “cartoneria” (cardboard sculpture). Cartoneria is a popular art form from Mexico that combines a mixture of indigenous knowledge with Spaniard art techniques and is deeply rooted in ancient Mexico’s legends. In this course, we will create fantastic mythological creatures from paper. We will incorporate diverse elements from creatures such as demons, angels and/or dragons to create new and unique forms.

Oaxacan Woodcarving This class is Inspired by the centuries old tradition of Oaxaca animal carvings. You will learn use hand woodcarving tools such as chisels and knives to create fantastic animals, to wonderful, intricate and expressive by nature. This class is for the enthusiastic beginner or the seasoned experienced woodcarver. We will cover the history and cultural background of Oaxaca wood carvings, “alebrijes” and other Mexican traditional arts. We will cover safety rules in the wood shop, how to read the wood, basic shapes in sculpture, sealing of the art piece, decorating and finishing, from the mere conception of the idea to the exhibition of the artwork.

Glass Fusing and Slumping Lab

You must be well versed on the process of fabricating glass pieces, theproper use and care of molds for slumping, and have taken 3 or more quarters of Glass Fusing and Slumping at Studio One. Or you can substantiate your skill and knowledge with the glass coordinator before the first Lab session. Safety procedures on how to operate a kiln and also important because the monitor does not offer instructions. You must have your own glass & tools. Tempered Glass MosaicBroken glass is quite magical and alluring. Create recycled mixed media pieces . Begin with a personal and expressive collage that you will cover with tempered glass and seal with colored grout. You can use this technique to create an expressive wall mounted piece or learn the technique to take home to your kitchen back splash. Bring your own imagery to create the collage (paper or acetate) and a small box (cardboard or wood) and/or board (12” or smaller at least 1/2” thick) to work on.

Glass Fusing and SlumpingLearn the art of working with “warm glass”. Using compatible glass you will create expressive work using stringers, confetti, decals, powders and copper inclusions. Beginning and advanced students welcome. More advanced projects will be offered to continuing students. Students need to buy fusible glass, a glass cutter and eye protection to class. All tools are provided.

Fusing and Slumping GlassThis class is an introduction to the wonderful world of kiln-formed glass. Layers of compatible glass are fused together to create artistic objects including jewelry, tiles, and picture frames. Glass can also be slumped into or over molds to create barrettes, small plates, and votive candle holders. Glass cutting, compatibility testing, use of “frits” (crushed glass) and metal inclusions are among the techniques presented and Information on the use of kilns and firing processes is also offered. More advanced projects will be available to continuing students. A supply list will be given out at the first class meeting.

Metal Jewelry DesignThis class emphasizes building basic/intermediate knowledge of jewelry design and construc-tion. Beginning students will design their own jewelry and construct their design pieces using the fundamental techniques of soldering, sawing, filing, finishing, and basic bezel setting. Lectures, demonstrations, and handouts will provide the basis of any technique needed. Intermediate students will progress through more advanced techniques (forging, cold con-nections, etching, etc). Jewelry will be made from metal sheet and wire. Brass, copper, and tools are provided. New students need to attend the first class for a safety discussion and a materials list.

This class if for those wanting to learn to knit to improve existing skill levels. Projects include: hats, scarves, and toys. for more advanced knitters. Volunteers assist as monitors to set-up the chemistry, observe and break down the Darkroom. Our facilities are available to the community for black and white film developing and printing no larger than 11” x 14”. Prior to registration, and lab use, new participants must have a brief over the phone or e-mail interview with the photo coordinator. At the time of your initial arrival, the monitor will give you an orientation that will include Studio One’s safety procedures and participant protocol. Bring your own photo paper and film. No production or commercial work is allowed. Lab time is purchased in 20-hour blocks of time. Patrons use time within 6 months. $90 for 20 hours for Oakland residents.

We’ll discuss making better creative decisions, how to control lighting, movement and flash. Basic image editing software will be discussed. Achieving effective color and light doesn’t have to be difficult. All medium (oil, acrylic, and watercolor) and all levels of painters are welcome to come explore. We will begin with the basics and discuss materials and equipment that make painting easier and fun. Each class will feature still life setups and landscape photos to work from. Landscape demonstration/discussion for the first half of the workshop, and still life during the second half. However, participants are welcome to work from their own photos/setups. We’ll begin with landscape theory: using values and how color changes with distance. We’ll move on to using light and shade to create convincing volume, how transparency creates depth, and using grays to make visual space in the still life. Should that color be warm or cold? In this class, students will develop their painting skills and work together to create mural (s) on large wood panels. Students will gain technical drawing and paint-ing skills and learn about the history of mural art in the first few sessions. In the last few sessions, students will work together to develop the mural theme create a design, and paint their murals together.

If you want to develop your drawing and painting skills, this is the class for you! Teens will learn about the elements of art and design through drawing and paint-ing. The concepts of texture, color, line, shape, and space will be introduced and developed in students’ work. This class is for students at all skill levels. Students will be encouraged to explore subjects that they are interested in.
