Lewis Fields (right) has a grass pitch and is the primary home for the UNH women’s soccer program. It is part of the University’s athletic complex located on campus and is adjacent to Cowell Stadium. Lewis Fields was the site of America East first round tournament games in 2003, 2004 and 2008.

bremner FieLdBremner Field (right), the alternate game and training site of UNH soccer, was renovated into an AstroPlay facility (approximately 110,000 square feet) with full lighting in the summer of 2002 and was resurfaced in 2011. Bremner provides the opportunity to host night games. Bremner Field was the site of the America East semifinal and championship games in 2007.

4 New Hampshire 2012 Women’s Soccer

The University of New Hampshire was originally founded as a land-grant college whose mission was to shape and educate citizenry among the state’s farmers, business people and engineers. Today, the Uni-versity is a land-, sea-, and space-grant university serving a growing undergraduate student body of about 11,942 and a graduate population of 2,257 in addition to 621 full-time faculty members, 86% of which have earned their doctorate degree. The University has grown into a top public research university occupying 2,600 acres of classic living and learning space, while still maintaining the look and feel of a New England liberal arts college with a faculty dedicated to teaching. UNH’s student to faculty ratio registers at 18:1 with 85% of its classes having 50 students or less.

HISTORY As one of the most prestigious institutions in the Northeast, the University of New Hampshire has always been recognized as a leader in education and research, spanning all fields of study and uniting them through interdisciplinary programs, labs, farms, theatres, research centers, and libraries. Founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, UNH was among the early state institutions of higher education whose formation was made possible by federal government land grants. The purpose for the grants was to establish colleges that would serve the sons and daughters of farming and laboring families. New Hampshire College was originally situated in Hanover, N.H. Here it was in connection with Dartmouth College before moving to Durham in 1893 after Benjamin Thompson bequeathed land and money to further the development of the college. The state legislature then granted its new charter as the University of New Hampshire in 1923. The University hosts 733 international students from more than 45 countries and boasts a population of students from all 50 states. Along with over 100 majors offered, UNH encompasses seven schools and colleges that undergraduates can choose from: the College of Liberal Arts, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Health and Human Services, College of Life Sciences and Agricultures, Whittemore School of Business and Economics, and the Thompson School of Applied Science. And at the very heart of the University’s undergraduate studies is the General Education Program. The GEP is a core program with a breadth of academic subjects that aims to acquaint the student with some of the major modes of thought necessary to understand

oneself, others, society, and the world. The University prides itself as being a top 10 entrepreneurial campus (Forbes.com and The Princeton Review) and is among the top 30 universities nationally in science research funding from NASA. UNH is home to the NASA-recognized Space Science Center; the Institute for Study for Earth, Oceans and Space; and the Institute of Marine Science and Engineering. The English program is staffed by an inspiring faculty of winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the MacArthur Fellowship, the Edgar Allen Poe Award and the Young Poets Award. In addition, the Whittemore School of Business and Economics, established in 1962, was recently selected second among all business schools in a nation-wide pool of business school deans. UNH also graduates students who attend top-notch graduate schools, including Law School at Harvard and Cornell, Engineering at Stanford, and Medical School at Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, and Harvard.

CAMPUSIn recent years, several of the athletic facilities have received major upgrades and improvements. In Sep-tember of 2001, the University completed a new $2.15 million track and field facility. The Jerry Azumah Performance Center, a strength and conditioning facility located in the UNH Field House, was dedicated on July 8, 2003. Renovations to the Center included the addition of 5,000 pounds of Olympic weights, 7,000 pounds of dumbbells, 14 Powerlift platform stations, 12 Hammer strength machines and an additional 15,000 pounds of weights. UNH athletics also added two $1.5 million outdoor artificial fields, Memorial Field and Bremner Field. Lundholm Gymnasium has received some major overhauls, including a new playing surface, lights, sound system, bleacher system, backboards and new scoreboards. The Paul Sweet

Oval was also renovated to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and the replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. In the 2012 offseason, Cowell Stadium was fitted with a brand new scoreboard while the football locker rooms were renovated as well. In the locker rooms, a new lighting system was installed while a 55-inch flat-screen TV and Fathead-designed murals featuring former players and UNH historical were added to the walls. A memorial of Todd Walker was also added in honor of the former Wildcat wide receiver. Walker suffered an untimely and heroic death March 18, 2011, in Boulder, Colo., when he stopped an attempted robbery and saved the life of a woman he was walking home. In November of 1995, construction of the $27 million Recreation and Sport Complex reached completion. The Whittemore Center includes a state-of-the-art 6,500 to 7,500 seat arena for hockey, concerts and convocations, as well as a new three-level recreational sports facility within the structure that had housed the old Snively Arena. In addition to the incredible improvements of its athletic facilities, the University has upgraded and renovated a large part of its academic campus as well. The latest addition to the expanding campus is the Paul College of Business and Economics, a 115,000 square foot academic building located on Garrison Avenue. Slated for completion in January 2013, the building will feature 16 technology-rich classrooms, totaling 950 new instructional seats. There will also be 25 high-tech groups study rooms along with a two-story “Great Hall” for informal and special events. Outside of the facility, there will be a courtyard for outdoor activities and events. The building will be a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold facility, maintaining the University’s commitment to sustainable programs and facilities. The University broke ground on the project in May 2011. Thompson Hall, one of the standing historical landmarks of the University, has also been beautifully refurbished and restored. The University completed a $52 million renovation of Kingsbury Hall in October of 2007, adding 6,000 square feet of student project space for students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, as well as a $4.5 million revamp of Hewitt Hall to expand the School of Health and Human Services. In addition, the 120,000 square foot Biological Sciences Building, Rudman Hall and the Spaulding Life Sciences Renovation project now provide state-of-the-art teaching and researching laboratories. The University also spent $15 million to complete Morse Hall, a new science and engineering building as well as $8.2 million to modernize the Me-morial Union Building. The revision to the existing student union building consisted of several upgrades including top kitchen and dining facilities, two theaters, student mailboxes, lounges and meeting rooms, as well as additional retail spaces such as the University Bookstore. Additionally, the University completed construction of the new dining facility on Main Street, Holloway Commons, as well as the renovation of the Dimond Library. Combining the atmosphere of a small New England liberal arts college with the resources and opportunities of a major research university, the Uni-versity of New Hampshire is a place where all students can find or create their own niche and succeed. While the University offers an extremely broad academic base with an inspiring faculty, it also provides students with thousands of opportunities to get involved, either through athletics, campus recreation, student life, or research. The University is a dynamic community that not only challenges its members academically but also expands their understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and leads to incredible growth as students, faculty, staff, and as a community.

dr. mark HuddLeston President Mark W. Huddleston is the 19th president of the University of New Hampshire. He brings three decades of experience in pub-lic and private higher education as a faculty member, dean, and senior administrator, most recently as president of Ohio Wesleyan University. His term at UNH commenced in July 2007. Huddleston began his academic career at the State University of New York-Buffalo in 1977 as an assistant professor of political science. He then joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 1980, where he remained for the next 24 years. Dr. Huddleston chaired the Department of Political Science and International Relations and served as associate provost for international programs. He was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2001, where he managed 45 academic departments and centers with near-ly 900 fulltime faculty and staff, and served in that capacity until he was named president of Ohio Wesleyan University in 2004. Having received his bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY-Buffalo, Huddleston went on to receive both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. An author of numerous books and articles, he has been active as a consultant for both the U.S. government and international organizations. He also served as an advisor in Bosnia on

rebuilding financial and administrative infrastructures after the Dayton accords. Huddleston was raised in Syracuse and spent 24 years at the University of Delaware in various capacities. For UNH he says, the best years are yet to come—and he is happy that he will be a part of that. Huddleston and his wife, Emma Bricker, have three children, Andy, Kate, and Giles.

marty scarano director oF atHLetics The 2012-13 academic year marks the 13th season Marty Scarano has served as the Director of Athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with academics, facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. His many accomplishments played a key role in UNH being named one of the Top 20 Athletic Departments in the Country in U.S. News and World Report college athletics rankings. With a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 89 percent among its student-athletes in 2011-12, UNH ranked third in the America East Conference and fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association. The men’s soccer, women’s cross country/track, gymnastics, women’s ski, and volleyball teams all posted perfect 100 percent GSRs while five additional programs tallied scores of 90 or above. The NCAA honored four Wildcat teams for multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APRs) in the top 10 percent of all teams in its respective sports. The Wildcat men’s ice hockey team and gymnastics both recorded perfect APRs of 1,000, while the men’s outdoor track & field team tallied 997 points and women’s indoor track & field notched 995. In 2012, the football program garnered its second-consecutive Aca-demic Progress Rate Award for the Colonial Athletic Association. UNH became one of only five FCS programs in the nation to earn

the title for a second straight year and the only FCS team in the country to both reach the postseason and capture an APR award in back-to-back seasons. UNH finished third in the America East Academic Cup for their third consecutive top-three finish, achieving a 3.14 cumulative grade-point average. The Wildcats had the highest number of honorees on the 2011 America East Fall Academic Honor Roll and the highest percentage of student-athletes on the 2011-12 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. In the fall, 52 student-athletes were named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll for achieving a GPA mark of 3.5 or higher while 76 student-athletes accomplished the feat on the winter/spring honor roll. Scarano has focused on moving UNH athletics into the collegiate national arena. To accomplish that goal, the University has taken on the task of hosting major NCAA championships. The Wildcat athletic department has played host to highly successful NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Northeast Regionals at the Verizon Wireless Arena (Manchester, N.H.) in 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2011 and will host again in 2013. UNH has also had the opportunity to host two NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Fours at the Whittemore Center in 2002 and 2005. In addition, UNH successfully hosted the 2007 NCAA Skiing Championships in Washington Valley as well as the 2005 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional at the Whittemore Center Arena. The women’s hockey team also played in the first outdoor game in the history of NCAA women’s hockey in 2010 at the Sun Life Frozen Fenway game against Northeastern while the men’s squad played in the 2012 Sun Life Frozen Fenway game against Maine. Football also competed in Colonial Clash games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. in 2010 and 2011 against UMass. During the Scarano Era, UNH teams have made 40 NCAA post-season appearances and have captured 11 conference titles. Gymnastics has participated in 11 NCAA tournaments, leading all programs over the span. Men’s hockey holds a pair of Hockey East titles and has made 10 trips to the NCAA tour-nament, a pair of Frozen Four appearances in 2002 and 2003. The football program has qualified for the NCAA FCS postseason for a nation leading eight consecutive seasons, advancing to the quarterfinals six times during the streak. Women’s ice hockey has seen NCAA action five times with two Frozen Four appearances. The squad also captured consecutive Hockey East Championships from 2006-09. The field hockey team captured its second ever America East crown in 2011 en route to their second national tournament appearance under Scarano’s tutelage. Volleyball has made a pair of NCAA appearances after capturing back-to-back conference titles in 2002 and 2003 Women’s lacrosse has too earned a pair of NCAA berths (2004, 2008), one coming after an America East championship victory in 2004. Additionally, 24 coaches have won 63 Coach of the Year awards during Scarano’s tenure, ranging from confer-ence coach of the year to New England and Northeast Regional Coach of the Year honors. Furthermore, head football coach Sean McDonnell garnered the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year by The Sports Network in 2005 after a stellar 11-2 campaign. There have been over $9 million in capitol improvements since Scarano’s hiring in the summer of 2000. Recently, a new scoreboard was put in at Cowell Stadium while the football locker room received a facelift as part the most recent renovation phase. Changes to the locker room included a new lighting system while a 55-inch flat-screen TV and Fathead-designed murals featuring former players and UNH historical were added to the walls. A memorial of Todd Walker was also added in honor of the former Wildcat wide receiver who suffered an untimely and heroic death in March of 2011. In the summer of 2007, the Cowell Stadium grass field was replaced with a $1 million Field Turf synthetic surface. As part of a $650,000 renovation project in the summer of 2011, the field turf at Bremner Field was replaced with a new state-of-the-art surface used by many varsity teams and for student recreational activities. In the fall of 2008, the Paul Sweet Oval renovation was completed to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and the replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. The total cost of the project exceeded $500,000. Additionally in 2007, a complete renovation of Lundholm Gymnasium was undertaken. The $600,000 overhaul included a new state-of-the-art bleacher system, new scoreboards, competition baskets and other aesthetic enhancements. In 2007, Scarano was named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region. Scarano was also awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the FCS. Scarano has also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 football, Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and is currently on the America East Executive Council. Most recently, Scarano was a member of the Hockey East Restructuring team that successfully recruited Notre Dame and the University of Connecticut to the conference. Outside of athletics, Scarano is in his 10th year on the Board of Corporators at Canterbury Shaker Village, a non-profit museum located in Canterbury, N.H. Before arriving at the University of New Hampshire, Scarano held the position of Athletics Director at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. During his tenure, Colorado College was ranked among the top 20 Division III programs in the Sears Cup national standings and produced several All-Americans, all-academic award winners and NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, director of physical education, associate director, and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have three children, Lyndon, Kyle, a sophomore at UNH, and Corey.

micHaeL Jackson Head coacH Michael Jackson enters his 18th season as the head coach of the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer program. A 1977 graduate of the University of Maine-Presque Isle, Jackson was named the America East Coach of the Year in 2002 and 1998, and led a staff that garnered America East Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2007. In 17 years, Jackson has compiled a 126-170-31 overall record, including a 43-30-9 record in conference play for a .580 winning percentage, coached five of the program’s top seven leading point scorers and the only All-America First Team selection – goalkeeper Maja Hansen – in UNH history. He has also had 14 America East All-Conference First Team honorees, as well as three players named to the North Atlantic Conference All-Conference First Team, a Goalkeeper of the Year award winner (Kristen Ouellette, 2002), three Striker of the Year recipients (Chiara Best, 2004 and Michelle Sheehan, 2007 and 2008) and a Midfielder of the Year honoree (Caitlin Whelan, 2007).

Jackson, who has made 14 tournament appearances with the ‘Cats, led UNH to the title game in 1998 and 2007, as well as semifinal ap-pearances in 1995, 1996, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. He also led the ‘Cats to America East tournament appearances in 2000, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2011, the Wildcats finished the season 5-12-2 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play, leading them to their 11th consecutive America East Championship tournament appearance. The Wildcats unfortunately bowed out in the first round, ultimately ending their season. In 2010, Jackson and the Wildcats qualified for the tournament for the 10th straight season. The ‘Cats were unable to advance in a first-round loss, ending their tournament run. Jackson put together what may have been his most impressive year while at the helm for the Wildcats in 2007. He led his team to an 11-7-2 record, good for a .632 winning percentage. While the 11 victories tied the second highest win total in a single season, which he had already done twice (1998, 2004), the winning percentage was Jackson’s highest during his career in Durham. His 6-1-1 record in the conference garnered a share of the Wildcats’ second ever America East regular season title, which also gave them their first America East tournament No. 1 seed in program history. For the sixth consecutive year, the Wildcats made it as far as the semifinal round. Jackson surpassed that, however, guiding the ‘Cats to the championship game for the second time in school history – the first time as a No. 1 seed and host of the title game. UNH advanced to the semifinals of the America East Championships in 2006 and finished 6-11-1 overall with seven shutouts. Two years prior, Jackson led the Wildcats (11-8-2 overall) to their first America East regular-season title as UNH shared the crown with a 6-3-0 conference record. In 2002, Jackson guided UNH to a second-place finish in the conference with a 5-2-1 record. The Wildcats reached double digits in wins (10-7-1 overall) and tied the school record for shutouts by blanking the opposition nine times. Jackson was honored as the conference’s Coach of the Year in 1998 after leading the ‘Cats to a third seed in the league tournament with a 7-2-0 America East record. UNH advanced to the conference championship game and finished that season with an 11-9-0 mark. In the classroom, Jackson’s Wildcats have excelled. In December 2011, the team re-ceived special recognition from the NSCAA for maintaining a grade point average above 3.0. New Hampshire secured the NSCAA Academic Award after tallying a cumulitive GPA of 3.13 for the 2010-11 academic year. The team also placed 16 student-athletes on the America East Academic Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or higher) with nine being named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.5 GPA or higher). Before assuming the head coaching position at UNH, Jackson served as an assistant coach at the University of Connecticut from 1990-94. During his tenure with the Huskies, UConn qualified for the NCAA tournament five consecutive seasons. In his last season at UConn, the team advanced to the NCAA semifinals. They advanced to the championship game in 1990 and made quarterfinal appearances in 1991 and 1993. The Huskies produced seven NCAA Division I All-America selections, 14 All-New England and 12 All-Regional players, as well as one Academic All-American in Jackson’s five years of service. Prior to joining the UConn coaching staff, Jackson served as the girls varsity soccer coach, as well as special education teacher at East Hampton (Conn.) High School from 1986-89. He helped produce the school’s first-ever All-State player during his rookie season. In his second year at the helm, the team qualified for its first-ever tournament and produced another All-State selection. Jackson began his coaching career with the boys’ soccer program at Waterford (Conn.) High School (1981-85). He directed the team to the state tournament four times, including three conference championships. In 1982, his team advanced to the state final and generated the school’s first-ever All-America selection. Jackson has also been involved in the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program, as well as with the Under-15 through Under-19 State teams. He has also been involved in various soccer camps throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts. In addition to his coaching background, Jackson also possesses several years of playing experience. He was a member of the varsity soccer program at the University of Maine-Presque Isle and played for the Waterford Soccer Club, an amateur men’s team. Jackson received his Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Science from Maine-Presque Isle in 1977 and attained his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Connecticut in 1986. As a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association, Jackson holds an Advanced National Diploma. He also earned a ‘B’ coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation. Jackson is a native of New London, Conn., and resides in Lee (N.H.) with his wife Cate.

COACHING STAFF


keLLy martin assistant coacH Kelly Martin enters her 18th season as an assistant coach with the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer program. A 1993 graduate of the University of Vermont, Martin has a wealth of coaching and playing experience. Before joining the Wildcat staff, Martin played for the Sheffield Hallam United Soccer Club (Sheffield, England) in the fall of 1994 and played semi-professionally with the Boston Renegades of the USISL-Women’s League from 1996-98. Martin was inducted into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2006 in recognition of her excellence as a soccer and softball player for the Catamounts. A four-year standout on the University of Vermont’s varsity soccer program, Martin was a three-time All-New England Team (NEWISA) selection. As team captain in 1992 and 1993, Martin was selected to the NSCAA First Team twice. In addition, she was a two-time First Team All-North Atlantic Conference (NAC) selection and played for the NEWISA Northeast Region Senior All-Star Team in 1993. Martin was also a member of UVM’s Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship team in 1989. She excelled in

the classroom while at Vermont, where she was named to the school’s Dean’s List and to the NAC Academic Honor Roll. Martin, who holds an NSCAA National Diploma and a USSF ‘B’ coaching license, received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from UVM and completed her Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Athletic Administration at UVM in March 2000. Martin is a native of Keene (N.H.) and currently resides with her family in Hampton (N.H.).

carLy draPer assistant coacH Carly Draper enters her fourth season as an assistant coach with the UNH women’s soccer program. Draper, who works with the Wildcat goalkeepers, came to Durham after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant with Loyola (Md.) College, where she also worked with the goalkeepers and received a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership in May 2009. Draper, a native of Ottawa, Ontario, helped guide the Greyhounds to a 10-6-4 record in 2008, including a 7-0-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference mark that clinched the regular season championship before Loyola fell in the tournament title game. Draper graduated from St. Lawrence in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and Exercise Science and recently received her NSCAA National Goalkeeper Diploma. She also teaches Theory of Coaching Soccer in the Kinesiol-ogy Department at UNH every other Spring, the most recent being in 2012.

catHy LeacH academic services Athletic excellence is one-half of the formula for success in the collegiate experience for University of New Hampshire women’s soccer players. The primary measure of achievement is the student-athlete’s success in the classroom. For the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 academic years, UNH was awarded the America East Academic Cup for recording the highest GPA in the conference. In both the Fall of 2010 and 2011, UNH placed the highest number of student-athletes on the America East Honor Roll. New Hampshire also boasts one of the top graduation rates in the country. UNH is dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete’s ability to achieve academic excellence. Realizing the time commitment the players give to the school, the University administers a comprehensive program of academic support services that is available to Wildcat women’s soccer players and all other student-athletes. This program includes the monitoring of academic progress and providing tutorial services, as well as interacting with the academic advisors within the various colleges.

JoHn ciani strengtH and conditioning coacH John Ciani enters his seventh season as an associate director of strength and conditioning at the University; he had held the position of UNH strength and conditioning assistant coach for four years. Ciani’s efforts have been key in guiding UNH student-athletes to NCAA appearances in both women’s and men’s ice hockey, field hockey, football, gymnastics, women’s volleyball, women’s lacrosse, skiing and track and field. Ciani came to UNH from the University of North Dakota, where he worked under Paul Chapman, the Wildcats’ current director of strength and conditioning, as an assistant with the men’s ice hockey, football, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s basketball and baseball teams. The Jerry Azumah Performance Center opened its doors in the summer of 2003 to UNH student-athletes. A monetary donation by Azumah, a now-retired cornerback of the Chicago Bears of the NFL who was a 2004 Pro Bowl selection and 1999 recipient of the Walter Payton Award (top football player in Div. I-AA), allowed the UNH athletic department to overhaul its existing strength

and conditioning center. The renovated Center features 5,000 pounds of Olympic weights, 7,000 pounds of dumbbells, 14 Power lift platform stations, 12 Hammer strength machines and an additional 15,000 pounds of weights.

meg Lesnikoski atHLetic trainer Meg Lesnikoski, a 2009 graduate of the University of Vermont, joined the University of New Hampshire Sports Medicine staff prior to the 2009-10 season. The Vermont native will work with women’s soccer, as well as the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams in her fourth year at UNH. In her first season as a Wildcat, Lesnikoski worked with women’s volleyball, in addition to the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams. Lesnikoski, who received a B.S. in Athletic Training, is a certified member of the National Athletic Training Association and is a New Hampshire Licensed Athletic Trainer.

karen coLLins sPort PsycHoLogy Karen Collins joined the UNH faculty in the fall of 2002 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Kinesiology department. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina Greensboro (2002) with a specialization in Sport Psychology. Her research focuses primarily on social issues in coaching and coaching education. As an undergraduate at Princeton University (1994) she was a two-sport athlete playing on the field hockey and lacrosse teams, captaining the field hockey team her senior year. As both a player and coach at Princeton University, Collins was part of multiple league championships, NCAA appearances and a national championship. After completing her undergraduate work at Princeton University, she was a former collegiate coach at Princeton University, University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College. Dr. Collins received her MS in Sport Studies from UNH and brings the combination of her academic preparation in sport psychology with a great deal of sport experience to her current position at UNH. In addition to her teaching and research, Dr. Collins is a sport psychology consultant for youth and collegiate athletes and coaches.

ACADEMICS…• Vermont won its seventh-straight America East Academic Cup after its student-athletes registered a cumulative GPA of 3.17. Six of the nine America East schools had student-athletes with GPAs of 3.0 or better.• America East’s nearly 3,400 student-athletes set a new league record with a combined 3.07 grade-point average in 2010-11. More than half of the conference’s student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor Roll for maintaining GPAs of 3.0 or better.• Binghamton University’s Sven Vloedgraven (tennis) and University at Albany’s Nikki Branchini (lacrosse) were named 2010-11 America East Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively.• Three schools (Boston U., New Hampshire, Vermont) ranked among the nation’s best in Graduation Success Rate (GSR), with scores of 94 or better. Nearly one-third of all America East teams had perfect GSR scores.• Thirty programs from America East schools received Academic Progress Rate (APR) public recognition awards from the NCAA for finishing among the top 10 percent in the nation.• Seventeen student-athletes received a total of 19 National Academic All-America honors.

ATHLETICS…• Every America East school won a conference championship or regular-season title for the first time since 2005-06.• Boston University won its sixth straight America East Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commis-sioner’s Cup and 11th overall to surpass Delaware for the most Cups in conference history.• Twenty-nine America East student-athletes earned All-America recognition, including one each in men’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer, five in men’s lacrosse, two each in women’s lacrosse, baseball and field hockey and 15 in cross country/track & field.• America East was second among all men’s lacrosse automatic-qualifying conferences in RPI.• Albany was the final undefeated women’s lacrosse team in Division I, with an 18-0 re-cord, before losing to national champion Northwestern in the NCAA quarterfinals.• UMBC defeated Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship, the eighth time in 10 years an America East team had advanced in the tournament.• Boston University had 13-straight shutouts, the second longest streak in NCAA women’s soccer history.• America East finished fourth in the field hockey RPI behind only the ACC, Big 10 and Big East and had two teams (Albany and Boston University) ranked in the final NFCA Top 20.• Stony Brook placed seventh as a team at the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Champion-ship.• After winning its first America East baseball championship since 2006, Maine beat FIU in an NCAA Regional game to give America East an NCAA win in each of the last three seasons.• Sven Vloedgraven of Binghamton was selected to the NCAA Tennis Singles Champion-ship for the second-straight year. He is the only America East student-athlete to have played in the event.


2012 OUTLOOK The University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team looks to continue its success and seek a 12th consecutive America East Championship tournament appearance in 2012. With a solid core of players returning to the squad this year and the addition of a talented line of newcomers, the Wildcats have their eyes set on one thing-a conference title. Despite seeing eight seniors walk across the graduation stage in May, including leading goal scorer Brooke Duchaney (4), the Wildcats return 18 student-athletes from last years’ team. Amongst those are three backs, four midfielders, six strikers, and three keepers. At the striker position, Meghan Ledwith (Yardley, Pa.) had a breakout first year with the ‘Cats by netting three goals and dishing out two assists for eight points to put her in a three-way tie for most points on the team. She was also named to the America East All-Rookie Team. Drea Nogueira (New Bedford, Mass.), who had a solid performance off the bench last year with a goal and an assist, will bring her veteran knowledge and experience to the offense for her fourth year with the program. Fellow senior Allie Coppenrath (Green Harbor, Mass.) will spend time on the front line while sophomores Jenna Shaddock (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and Brianna Spitler (Montoursville, Pa.) will also be in on the charge. Colleen Murray (Bedford, N.H.) returns to the front line for her second year after playing in nine games last season. She registerd five shots, all of them durinig conference play. Monique LaMotte (Tampa, Fla.), a First Team All-Conference selection last year, will help anchor the Wildcat attack from the midfield position. LaMotte pummeled opposing teams with shots last year by striking a team leading 31, 15 of which were on net. She was able to secure a goal and a pair of helpers during her time on the field. Also in the midfield section will be Elizabeth Curry (Bremerton, Wash.), Kelsi O’Neil (Hampton, N.H.), Kristi Zarrilli (Gorham, Maine) and Tara Fraprie (Norwalk, Conn.). While Zarrilli predominantly plays midfield, O’Neil and Curry also see time on the defensive line to create a versatile midfield lineup. O’Neil started all 19 games that the team played last season and tallied a pair of helpers while on the field. Zarrilli played in all 19 games with three starts while Curry started 10 of the 12 games she played in. Fraprie returns to the team after taking a year off. On defense, New Hampshire native Kelly Spencer (Exeter, N.H.) will help anchor the line. Spencer made 10 starts in the 18 games that she played in last year and tallied a goal and an assist. Sophomores Jordan Logue (Walpole, Mass.) and Hannah Blondin (East Hampton, Conn.) made an immediate impact at their positions in their first season with the team. Logue made nine appearances, including a start, and registered three shots while Blondin made 15 appearances through the course of the season. Junior goalie Erica Correa (Cheshire, Conn.) returns for her third year with Wildcats. Correa has been a defensive juggernaut through her first two seasons and is poised to remain so in 2012. She enters the season with 3562:18 in the books and is just four saves shy of 200 for her career. Seniors Erin Jackson (Wakefield, Mass.) and Sarah Dobush (Pickering, Ontario) also bring solid experience and knowledge, solidifying the position. Jackson will also serve as captain of the squad. The ‘Cats welcomed in a strong class of freshmen in the off season that is expected to make an immediate impact. Madeline Christ (Issaquah, Wash.) will play on the midfield line. Christ is coming off a stellar high school campaign where she is now the proud owner of four records: most assists in a game, most assists in a season, most career assists, and most career points. She also has two first-team recognitions under her belt. Kirstyn Corder (Overland Park, Kansas) also comes in to play at the midfield position. She was a 2011 First Team All-State selection as well as various tournament team selections. She broke her high school’s record for most goals in a season (41). Melissa Gloekler (Bow, N.H.) will play as a forward at UNH. At Bow High School, she tallied over 60 career goals and helped lead BHS to its first ever state title. She also spent five years with the Seacoast United Soccer Club and was a member of the SUSC Super-Y squad. Kellie McGoldrick (Ambler, Pa.) was a four year starter swinging between the midfield and back positions at Hatboro-Horsham High School. She captained the squad for two years and was the third leading scorer through her senior year.McGoldrick was also a three year member of the FC Delco of the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL). Kennedy Nickerson (Niantic, Conn.). will see time at the back and midfield positions for the ‘Cats. Nickerson earned the East Lyme High School Offensive Player of the Year award (2008-2011), ELHS MVP in 2010 and 2011, and the ELHS Rookie of the Year in 2008. She also ended her high school campaign as the fifth highest scorer in school history. Cassandra Prario (Somerset, Mass.) will play as defender with offensive capabilities. Prario led her high shcool squad in scoring through all four years of soccer and set the scoring record at Somerset Berkley Regional High School. She also garnered the Freshman of the Year award. Prario spent three years with the Scorpions Soccer Club (ECNL) in Massachusetts. Gabrielle Sloan (Stow, Mass.) comes in with seven years of experience with the Stars of Mass program (ECNL). She helped them earn consecutive state titles (2007-2011) and to a regional championship title. Rounding out the incoming class of ‘Cats is Alex LaPorta (Denver, Colo.) LaPorta, a four-year starter for Denver East High School, was the only fresh-man and sophomore to be a member of the team during her first two years. She is also coming off a successful campaign with the Boulder County Force (Buffs); she helped the team qualify for the Far West Regionals in Phoenix, Ariz. after finishing as runner-up in the state tournament. With the returning veteran experience and the solid incoming class of freshmen, the Wildcats are ready to capture an America East title.

The mission of the intercollegiate athletics program at UNH is to provide student-athletes a collegiate experience that is enriched by their participation in programs which are competitive at the NCAA Division I level both regionally and nationally. After entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed, the Wildcats suffered a heartbreaking loss to No. 5 Binghamton (Oct. 27), bringing their season to a close.

New Hampshire ended the 2011 regular season with an overall record of 5-12-2 and a conference record of 3-4-1. Once again, it proved to be one of the strongest teams offensively, ranking fourth in points (56), fifth in goals (18) and third in assists (20). The team also ranked sec-ond in fewest fouls committed during the season (133).

The Wildcats opened the season with a home contest against the University of Massachusetts (Aug. 23), battling to a tough 2-1 loss. UNH cut the deficit in half in the 89th minute of the game on a header by Brooke Duchaney (Hampton Falls, N.H.), however could not complete the comeback. The next three gamesed result in losses, but the ‘Cats remained persistent and snapped the streak when they picked up a 1-0 win against Rhode Island (Sept. 9). Senior forward Stephanie Gilkenson (Cranston, R.I.) tallied her first goal of the season in the 26th minute of play while sophomore goalie Erica Correa (Cheshire, Conn.)

made four saves en route to her first shut-out of the season.

New Hampshire fol-lowed with a pair of home games against Northeastern (Sept. 11) and Brown (Sept. 15) but fell by one-goal margins each game. The ‘Cats then traveled to Bryant (Sept. 18) where the two teams played to a 0-0 draw. With the next game at home against Holy Cross (Sept. 21), the

Wildcats took advantage and secured their second win of the season, 2-0. Correa picked up her second shutout of the season after making a pair of saves. New Hampshire followed up with a 4-1 loss at Harvard (Sept. 25) in its final non-conference match.

In their next match, the Wildcats welcomed Albany (Sept. 29) to town as they picked up a 5-3 win in their first America East contest of the season. New Hampshire pummeled the Great Danes with 21 shots, converting on two in the first half and three in the second. Despite the offensive surge, UNH suffered losses in its next four games, losing three of them by one goal. The team fell to Hartford (Oct. 2) 3-0 in the first of the four games, but played closely contested matches against Boston University (Oct. 6; 1-0), Stony Brook (10/9; 1-0) and Vermont (10/13; 3-2).

New Hampshire remained resilient and got back on track, picking up a 2-0-1 record in its final three regular sea-son contests. The first win came against Binghamton (10/16) after battling back from a 1-0 deficit with a pair of goals for a 2-1 win. The next contest resulted in a 1-1 draw at UMBC (10/20) after Gilkenson picked up the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute of play. New Hampshire ended the regular season at home with a 2-0 victory over Maine (10/23) on se-nior day. Fittingly, seniors Duchaney and Gilkenson tallied a goal each in the win while Correa made two saves for her third shutout win of the season.

A slew of Wildcats picked up post season awards in honor of their hard work and dedication throughout the regular season. Junior forward Monique LaMotte (Tampa, Fla.) was tabbed an All-Conference First Team selection while seniors Gilkenson and Kelly Mooney (Canton, Mass.) garnered All-Conference Second Team honors. Fresh-man forward Meghan Ledwith (Yardley, Pa.) rounded out the awards when she took home All-Rookie team honors.

In May, the team saw eight seniors walk across the graduation stage, including Gilkenson, Duchaney, Mooney, Alyssa Mi-chel, Jordyn Krall, Taylor Finley, Allie Rozelle and Jill Brown.

Handing Out the Hardware11 members of the Wildcats were honored at the team’s annual awards banquet on February 11, 2012, in Huddleston Hall. Alyssa Michel was awarded the Player’s Award while Jill Brown and Brianna Spitler received the Gold Medal Award. Kristi Zarrilli was honored with the Barros Family Award as Erica Cor-rea and Hannah Blondin were declared the Student-Athlete Award winners. Erin Jackson was presented with the Honor Award and will also be a captain of the squad for the 2012 campaign. Additionally, seniors Brooke Duchaney, Taylor Finley, Stepha-nie Gilkenson, Jordyn Krall, Kelly Mooney and Alli Rozelle were also honored for their impact and dedi-cation to the program during their four years.

Elite EightThe eight seniors of last year’s squad were honored at the Annual Awards Banquet for their dedication and committment to the program through their tenure with the team.
