“The number of NCAA champions and All-Americans from our new league is astounding,” Kepler said. “The emphasis given to Olympic sports, and especially track, is unparalleled. I view it as an opportunity to grow our program and develop a rich tradi on of track and fi eld excellence. This can be our me to invest and build something special. It won’t happen overnight, but this is an incredible chance to

elevate our program to heights it has never seen.” Losing only one senior to gradua on last year, the Utes enter the 2012 season with an established base of veteran leadership. Alyssa Abbo , a former NCAA qualifi er, received a sixth year of eligibility and will compete during the indoor season. She is determined to lead the distance medley relay to an NCAA Championships qualifying bid. “Alyssa has experienced about everything a college athlete could want to see and do,” Kepler said. “She expects the best of herself and her teammates every day. Alyssa always studies her opponents and knows what to expect. There are a lot of girls on our team that look up and try to follow in her steps.” Alongside Abbo , the distance events will feature junior standout Amanda Mergaert. Last season, Mergaert broke her own school record in the mile race three mes. She qualifi ed for the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships and fi nished 14th, earning second team All-America honors. Mergaert is a three- me NCAA qualifi er as she most recently earned a spot in the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships fi eld, where she fi nished 84th. “Amanda has a toughness about her that I know our team responds to,” Kepler said. “She handles the pressure of the biggest meets very well. That is something that, because of the rest

of our team is so young, will be an invaluable asset that she can share with them.” With a year of collegiate experience, sophomore Rebekah Winterton has established a spot among the top distance athletes for the Utes. Throughout the course of the 2010-11 season, Winterton improved and concluded the year with a fi h-place performance at the USA Junior Outdoor Championships. The throwing events feature a veteran group that will be headed by three juniors. In 2011, Anneli Stahl earned fourth place in the weight throw at the Mountain West Conference Championships, and went on to qualify for the NCAA Regional Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw. Stahl has con nued to develop and will have a chance to compete against some of the top throw athletes in the country in Pac-12. Pos ng top 10 fi nishes at the 2011 MWC Championships, juniors Cynthia Sanchez and Nikkie Rudder give the Utes a boost in the weight throw and shot put events. Sanchez put together a great 2011 season, establishing herself as the top Utah thrower in the weight throw. Rudder has con nued to improve through the off season and will be a solid threat in the shot put event. “This is a group that has set huge goals and expecta ons for themselves,” Kepler said. “Overall, they are the most experienced group on this year’s team. We will lean on them for

leadership and toughness, especially at the higher caliber meets.” Utah will feature two of the premier ver cal jump athletes in the league in seniors Langley Iverson and Brianna LeRoy. Last season, Iverson broke the six foot barrier twice in the high jump. She recorded the second best jump in school history with a 6’ 3/4” and fi nished 17th at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

the pentathlon and heptathlon at the MWC Championships. “Langley and Brianna bring a lot of experience to our team,” Kepler said. “Both had huge levels of improvement last year. The biggest area of improvement we need this year will be consistency. If they want to reach their goals of being All-Americans, they will have to be more consistent with their performances.” Juniors Klaudia Rokossa and Theresa Waybright are scheduled to compete in the pole vault. They will join with Iverson and LeRoy to give Utah one of the top ver cal jump groups in the league. In the hurdle events, junior Angela Kaplar has

set school records in the 100m and 60m hurdles. Kaplar fi nished second in the 100m hurdles at the 2011 MWC Outdoor Championships. Under the watch of associate head coach Burke Bockman, Kaplar has her a en on focused on breaking the school record again and

qualifying for the NCAA Championships. “Kaplar’s event is no diff erent than anyone else,” Kepler said. “The sprint hurdles in the Pac-12 are loaded with na onal caliber athletes. She will have to con nue to improve mentally and physically in order to deal with the higher level of compe on. She has looked very good during the fall training periods, and we look for that to carry into the season.” In the 800m race, senior Lucy Yates looks to make her fi rst appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Yates qualifi ed for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships and fi nished 23rd overall. Yates will redshirt the outdoor season to focus on qualifying for the Bri sh Olympic Team.

Falling one spot shy of qualifying for the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships, the Utah distance medley relay has put in extra eff ort for the 2012 season. Abbo , Mergaert, Yates and sophomore Alyssa Johnson broke the school record a year ago. During the outdoor season the DMR was the 2011 Drake Relay’s champion. With the departure of Abbo at the end of this season, Kepler is determined to have the record-se ng relay fi nish near the top of the Pac-12 and qualify for the NCAA Championship meet. “Our distance medley relay has become a premier event for us,” Kepler said. “We have come up just short of making the NCAA Indoor Championships the previous two years. The top 12 teams qualify, and we have been 14th and 13th the last two seasons. With Alyssa coming back and the improvement from the others, that group has set huge goals for itself. Those goals include much more than just making the NCAA fi eld.” With an experienced group and veteran leaders at the helm, the 2012

season could be a break-out year for the Utah women’s team. Kepler and his team know the road will not be easy, but they are prepared for the task. “This should be the best team that we have had in my seven years as the head coach here at Utah,” Kepler said. “We have several athletes who can compete at a high level in the Pac-12. We probably don’t have the quality of depth that some of our new peers have; however, our staff has shown that we can develop talent. Hopefully, our recrui ng eff orts will also pay off , and we can raise the bar and be very compe ve in our new league.”

Kyle Kepler is in his seventh year as the head coach of the University of Utah women’s cross country and track & fi eld programs. Kepler’s organization and attention to detail have allowed him to develop a solid foundation and create a competitive program that has steadily improved each year.

In 13 years of coaching at the NCAA Division I level, Kepler has seen 32 conference champions, 144 all-conference athletes, 40 regional qualifi ers, 26 NCAA fi nals qualifi ers, and nine NCAA All-Americans. Kepler’s infl uence on his athletes is not just visible on the track, but also in the classroom. The women’s cross country team has been honored by USTFCCCA as All-Academic fi ve out of the previous six seasons. The track and fi eld team has been a USTFCCCA All-Academic team during fi ve of the previous seven seasons with a 2011 GPA of 3.29.

2010-11 In the 2010 cross country season, Kepler led a very young Ute squad to a fi h-place fi nish at the Mountain West Conference Championships. Kepler served as meet director last season when the Utes hosted the 2010 NCAA West Regional, which received great reviews from cri cs and coaches from around the region. Under Kepler’s guidance, sophomore Amanda Mergaert took advantage of her home course and ran to a ninth-place fi nish and qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships, where she fi nished 45th overall. The 2011 indoor track and fi eld season, saw the Utes fi nish fi h at the MWC Indoor Championships. Junior Langley Iverson fi nished second in the high jump at the conference championships and qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships with a mark just shy of a school-record. Iverson cleared the six-foot barrier twice throughout

the season en-route to a 17th-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships. The distance medley relay team comprised of Alyssa Abbo , Alyssa Johnson, Lucy Yates, and Mergaert ran a new school-record me of 11:11.71 and earned a second-place fi nish at the Alex Wilson Invita onal. That quartet was 13th in the country and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Throughout the indoor season, Kepler oversaw the Utes break three school records, including the mile three diff erent mes by Mergaert. The success the Utes experienced during the indoor season carried over to the outdoor season where Kepler saw his athletes break three

more school records: including the 5,000 meters (Abbo ), which had not been touched in over 23 years, as well as Angela Kaplar (100m hurdles), and Abbo and Mergaert (mile). Mergaert qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships and fi nished 14th in the 1500m race. The Utah distance medley relay earned the school’s fi rst ever Drake Relays championship with a school-record me of 11:17.09. Abbo and Mergaert fi nished second and third in the 1500 meter run with Abbo ’s me (4:19.73) breaking the 30-year-old school record. Mergaert would go on to break that record with her winning performance of 4:16.57 at the NCAA Regional Championships. Brianna LeRoy scored in fi ve events (Heptathlon, 100m hurdles, Long Jump, Javelin, and High Jump) at the conference meet to lead the Utah eff ort in its fi nal appearance at the MWC Outdoor Championships.

2009-10 During the 2009 cross country season, Kepler guided one of the youngest teams in the country to a sixth-place fi nish at the MWC Championships, with two freshmen fi nishing in the top 30. At the NCAA Mountain Regional meet, four of Utah’s fi ve scoring runners were freshmen. Kepler not only coached the young athletes with a high level of performance, but emphasized the importance of academics with fi ve of his cross country athletes achieving academic all-conference status. At the MWC Indoor Championships, the Utes fi nished fourth overall for the second consecu ve year. In outdoor track and fi eld, Utah fi nished sixth overall at the conference meet, but scored 70 or more points for the second straight year. At the MWC Indoor Championships, Utah’s distance medley team comprised of Mergaert, Chelsey Kaplar, Lucy Yates, and Alyssa Abbo set a new school record and won their fi rst conference tle with a me of 11:38.59. The distance medley team fi nished nearly 11.5 seconds faster than second-place BYU, who had won the event nine of the 10 previous years prior to Utah’s victory. Abbo

went on to win her fi rst individual conference tle in the 3,000 meter run (9:55.54) the next day. As a freshman, Mergaert claimed the runner up spot in the mile run in a new school record me (4:51.21). Sophomore Iverson claimed all conference honors in the high jump with clearance of (5-8.75) that gave her a runner up fi nish as well. Sarah Grimm (weight throw) and the 4x400m relay team were third-place fi nishers and earned all-MWC honors. Utah’s DMR ended the season ranked 14th in the country a er running a school record 11:13.77 at the Notre Dame Last Chance qualifying meet. The outdoor season saw Abbo run to Utah’s fi rst ever Drake Relays championship in the 1500m with a me of 4:23.48. She was also the conference champion in that event with a me of 4:29.98. Grimm broke the school record in the hammer throw with her toss of 207-1.75 at the Mark Faldmo Invita onal. Grimm (hammer throw), Kaplar (400m hurdles), Iverson (high jump), and the 4x400 meter relay earned all MWC honors. Yates qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships for the fi rst me in her career, where she fi nished 23rd overall in the 800m event. Her me (2:06.21) in the preliminary round at the NCAA West

Regional Championships set a new Utah school record. Between indoor and outdoor track and fi eld, Kepler guided his athletes to 16 All-MWC honors. Grimm

HEAD COACH KYLE KEPLERqualifi ed for the NCAA West Region Championships and was ranked in the top 10 in the na on for the hammer throw during the last half of the season. Kepler saw eight athletes qualify for regionals under the new qualifying system. Twenty athletes from the track and fi eld team also earned academic all-conference honors.

2008-09 The 2008 season was a banner year for Coach Kepler and the Utes. He coached the cross country team to a third-place fi nish at the MWC Championships, which is the highest fi nish in school history. En route to that third-place fi nish, the Utes defeated defending conference champion Colorado State. The team also had a top-10 fi nish in the NCAA Regional Meet, placing sixth overall. Abbo (9th) and Chelsea DiGrazia (21st) were named to the NCAA All-Mountain Region team. Abbo advanced to the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships where she placed 76th with a me of 21:00.5, missing all-American status by 19 seconds. The successful momentum transferred into the track and fi eld season as Kepler coached his athletes to 135 new personal bests between the indoor and outdoor seasons. The team fi nished fi h at the MWC Outdoor Championships. Senior Chelsea Shapard won the 400m hurdles for the third consecu ve year, while Grimm and Iverson won the hammer throw and high jump tles, respec vely. Seven Utes were named to the all-conference team in four events. Kepler and his staff coached two athletes (Shapard and Grimm) to the NCAA Track and Field Na onal Championships. Shapard went on to qualify and compete at the 2009 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, fi nishing 21st overall. Iverson also qualifi ed and competed at the 2009 USA Track and Field Junior Na onal Championships.

2007-08 In 2007, Kepler coached the cross country team to an improved fi h-place fi nish in the MWC Championships, including three top-25 fi nishers. At the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, Abbo fi nished 24th overall

and was named to the NCAA All-Mountain Region team as a sophomore. Kellie Anderson and Lauren Endersen also garnered top-50 fi nishes at the NCAA Regional Championships. On the track, Shapard broke her own school record in the 400m hurdles with a me of 58.07 at the Arkansas Twilight. She also went on to win her second consecu ve MWC 400m hurdle tle. Shapard was named to the All-West Region Team a er a third-place fi nish at the NCAA West Region Championships. At the NCAA Championships, she advanced to the semifi nals and fi nished 15th overall. Josefi n Berg had a podium fi nish at the MWC Championships where she was an All-MWC performer a er placing third with a hammer throw of 182-3. She qualifi ed for the NCAA West Regional Championships and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Track and Field Championships, where she placed 22nd overall with a throw of 185-10. The Utes fi nished sixth in the outdoor MWC Championships and seventh at the indoor MWC Championships.

2006-07 During the 2006 cross country season, Kepler guided freshman Abbo to a top-25 fi nish at the MWC Championships (23rd) and a top-50 fi nish at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships (46th). A er only a year under Kepler’s coaching, the Utes improved to sixth-place in the team standings. During the track season, Kepler saw seven all-MWC performers between the indoor and outdoor seasons, and coached two MWC outdoor champions: Shapard and Amanda Feigt. Both qualifi ed for regionals along with Abbo , Mandie Rowell and Susan Atwater. Shapard and Feigt were also NCAA qualifi ers during the 2007 outdoor season. “From the moment he showed up on my front porch as a high school freshman, through an outstanding high school and collegiate running career, to assistant and head coaching du es at the University of Northern Iowa (which included serving as the director of the NCAA Division I Championships) to now leading the up-and-coming Utah program, Kyle Kepler has been a proven winner, team leader, and program developer. His intense commitment to excellence for each individual and the team as a whole allows him to foster the rela onships and development among his squads that create excitement and success.”

“I was a walk-on my freshman year when we were under the supervision of a diff erent coach and was introduced to Coach Kep my sophomore year. Under the excellent coaching and supervision of Kep I dropped my mile me by 25 seconds, broke the school record in the mile and ran my way to an all region spot in cross country. Kep had the ability to assess each runner’s individual talents and devloped appropriate workouts accordingly. I trusted my training from Coach K and knew that if I did what he was asking, I was going to run fast. He was always a en ve to each individual runner’s needs and spent me coaching each girl on the team. I feel that Kyle has a great ability to take any runner, assess their strengths and weaknesses and then train them into the best shape of their lives. He is a en ve to injury and does not force training through ailments, which is key in sports like cross country and track where overuse and abuse is so common. I know that I am not alone in these opions about his coaching and have had many successful teammates who would agree. Kep took a cross country team (my sophomore year) who could barely fi nish a workout and turned them into a 3rd place fi nisher at the conference meet (my senior year) with two runners making all region and one runner making na onals. Even a er my running career fi nished, I have watched Kep’s cross country and track programs con nue to improve each year with more athletes making it to big caliber meets like Na onals every season.”

CODY KRENKAHead Cross Country Coach/Head Track & Field Coach • Elko High School (Nev.) “Coach Kepler is a great coach who has an amazing ability to take a young athlete fresh out of high school and turn her in to a compe ve NCAA Division I athlete. He realizes that each athlete has diff erent poten al and works hard to get each girl to that poten al. As a distance coach for 11 years, I have had more than my fair share of athletes compete at the next level and I can honestly say that the distance program under Coach Kepler at the University of Utah is usually my highest recommenda on for my female athletes.”

Built on a fi rm founda on of academic excellence and superior athle c performance, the Conference ushers in a new era with the addi ons of the University of Colorado and University of Utah, offi cially becoming the Pac-12 Conference on July 1, 2011. The Pac-12 rises above the rest, upholding its tradi on as the “Conference of Champions,” claiming an incredible 180 NCAA team tles over the past two decades, including nine in 2010-11, averaging nearly nine championships per academic year. Even more impressive has been the breadth of the Pac-12’s success, with championships coming in 27 diff erent men’s and women’s sports. The Pac-12 has led the na on in NCAA Championships in 45 of the last 51 years and fi nished second fi ve mes. Since the NCAA began conduc ng women’s championships 30 years ago, Pac-12 members have claimed at least four na onal tles in a single season on 22 occasions, including 2010-11. Overall, the Pac-12 has captured
