“We obviously want to return as many kids to the NCAA Championships as we can,” Kepler said . “We have a set of upperclassmen who have a lot of experience and have had some success . We also have a group of younger athletes, freshmen and sophomores, who I think are really talented and can come in and experience a great deal of success early on in their careers . We want to see some individual improvement, which I think will lead to team improvement . “Our seniors need to provide a good example for our underclassmen,” Kepler continued. “They need to make sure that they don’t get too high when things go great, or too low when things don’t go as well as they expect . In our program we talk about making sure

that nothing drops below a ‘B’ type of day . If it is not a perfect ‘A’ day that is okay, but we need to make sure it doesn’t drop below a ‘B’ so we can keep moving forward and stop it from going backwards .” Fresh off a successful, but illness-plagued, cross country season, the Utah distance runners hope to use the short break between seasons to return to full health and turn their attention back to the track . Leading this group will be senior Rebekah Winterton and true freshman Sarah Feeny . Winterton narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November . Last season, she won the MPSF Championship in the

5,000 indoors and finished eighth in the 10,000 at the Pac-12 Championships, qualifying for the NCAA preliminaries. Feeny received national recognition coming out of high school, but had to battle through illness in her first cross country season. Despite not being 100 percent, Feeny finished first for the Utes and 32nd overall at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships . “We probably fielded the most talented team we ever had last cross country season,” Kepler stated . “It is going to be a very interesting and fun track season with them being so young . If we can get them to adapt to the track in some of the same ways they did to cross country, our distance group could definitely surprise quite a few people . We know that we have

some challenges ahead for our distance group, but that opens up some space for some kids to step up and improve and help themselves make some gains .” After redshirting the entire 2014 season, senior Destanae Howerton-Davis returns to lead the Utah throwing group. She qualified for NCAA prelims in the discus in 2013 . Accompanying Howerton-Davis will be fellow senior Aoife Hickey and sophomore Ilse Kaaja. Last season, Hickey qualified for the NCAA preliminaries and finished fifth in the hammer throw at the Pac-12 Championships. Kaaja finished as the top freshman at the NCAA preliminaries in

the hammer and recorded a personal-best throw of 195 feet 1 inch to capture sixth at the conference championships . Sophomore Kassie Nagel will also help strengthen this group in the shot put . “I think the throwers will definitely be a strength for us this particular year,” Kepler said. “It is great to get Destanae back in the mix after redshirting last season. Aoife has been a NCAA qualifier for us for

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK Entering its fourth year as a member of the Pac-12 Conference, the Utah women’s track & field team is gearing up for another successful campaign in 2015. Under the direction of 10th-year head coach Kyle Kepler, the Utes are looking to balance veteran leadership with new talent in order to take their place among the elite teams in the nation’s top conference.

quite a few years and she will, along with Ilse Kaaja, make us strong in the hammer throw . We saw a lot of good things from Kassie as a freshman in the shot put . She will be striving for more consistency this season . She is a big time talent and we hope she can take that next step and really improve and possibly get herself on the nationally scene. There are definitely some exciting things that can happen in our throwing group, but they will have to step up and continue to practice at a high level .” The throws group will also be enhanced by the addition of Stanford transfer Megan Glasmann . A Utah native, Glasmann was No. 2 in national high school history in the javelin with her 176-foot-11-inch toss at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Columbia in 2013 . Last season, Glasmann earned her second consecutive U.S. Junior National title in the javelin with a season-best throw of 175 feet . “Glasmann is definitely a big pick up for us,”

Kepler said. “She is definitely someone who I think can come in and make an immediate impact, not only in the conference, but get into the national meet as well . We hope that she can step up establish herself as one of the best in the country in the javelin . She was injured at the end of last year, so we have to make sure that he is one hundred percent . The javelin is one of those events that beat your body up . It requires so much force and energy to perform, so we will definitely keep an eye on her.” Under the watch of newly hired assistant coach Pete Herber, the sprints and hurdles group will have their work cut out for them after losing All-

American senior Rosalie Waller. Stepping up to fill Waller’s shoes will be senior Ali Eisenbeiss . Last season, Eisenbeiss ran the third-fastest 800 time in school history . In the shorter sprints, sophomore Alissa Atisme returns as the school-record holder in the 200 . Junior Jameela Hayes and sophomore Rhianna Williams will also help bolster this group . “Pete is extension of my philosophy as a head coach,” Kepler explained . “Beyond that, he is a great technician . He is a guy who provides great leadership and is able to speak to the kids in a way that will know exactly what his expectations are. He is great at providing direction and explanation, and then expects his kids to go out there and do it . “Ali is probably the leader of that middle distance group,” Kepler said . “We have some other young kids behind her, and maybe one or two freshmen will be able to step in and help. Atisme has looked very fit for our shorter sprint group . She is somebody who we are

definitely excited to see grow again this year and be the cornerstone of that group .” The jumps group will have their work cut out for them, with only two returners . The Utes will rely on sophomores Kailey Banks and Courtney Jost to be the leaders of this group after losing Theresa Waybright to graduation. Hansen finished 11th in the high jump at Pac-12’s while Jost was 10th in the triple jump . Alongside Hansen and Jost will be true freshman Michelle Norman . With only two years of collegiate experience combined, this group is sure to

be tested but shows promising talent heading into the indoor season . “I am certainly concerned with the lack of depth,” Kepler said. “Courtney is coming off surgery in the fall, so we probably won’t have her back until the outdoor season . We want to make sure that she has plenty of time to heal and do things the right way. Kailey Hansen finished strong at the end of last season. We know that she has some talent and want to continue to keep her healthy . So far, Michelle looks good and I think that she will anchor that crew this year . We just have to do with what we have so far and down the road that could become one of the major strengths for our track and field program.”

Kyle Kepler is in his 10th year as the head coach of the Utah women’s cross country and track & field programs. Kepler’s organization and attention to detail have allowed him to develop a solid foundation and create a competitive program that has steadily improved each year.

Kepler has coached four athletes to All-America honors at Utah. Amanda Mergaert was a five-time All-American, with her career culminating in first-team honors in 2013 in the indoor mile and the outdoor 1,500 as well as cross country honors in 2012 . Langley Iverson (2011, indoor high jump), Brianna LeRoy (2012, outdoor high jump), and Rosalie Waller (2014, outdoor 800) have also earned All-America honors at Utah under Kepler . Under Kepler, the Utes have sent eight athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships . Mergaert (2011-13, 1,500) and Chelsea Shapard (2007-09, 400 hurdles) were both three-time NCAA attendees. Mergaert finished third in the 1,500 at NCAA’s as a senior in 2013 . She was the 2011 USTFCCCA Mountain Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year . Kepler increased Utah’s NCAA Outdoor Regional Championships attendees from five in 2006 to 10 in 2013 . The Utes have also sent two athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships under Kepler . Mergaert (2012, mile) and Rebekah Winterton (2014, 5,000) have both won Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor track championships . Utah has set 17 outdoor and 13 indoor school records since 2006 . In cross country, Kepler has sent athletes to the NCAA Championships five times. Mergaert was a three-time cross country NCAA qualifier. The Utes have had five runners combine for seven all-region honors. Utah was ranked as high as fifth in the region

in 2008 . During Utah’s six years in the Mountain West Conference under Kepler, the Utes won nine outdoor conference titles and two indoor titles. Shapard was a three-time 400 hurdles outdoor champion. Utah earned 23 outdoor and 20 indoor All-MWC honors . Kepler’s influence on his student-athletes is not just visible on the track, but also in the classroom . His cross country teams have earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors seven years while his track teams have earned honors four times. His athletes have combined for 32 individual honors from the USTFCCCA between track and cross country . Lauren Endersen was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2008 and 2009, while Waller earned

KYLE KEPLERhonors in 2014 . Since Utah joined the Pac-12 in 2011-12, the Utes have earned 29 all-academic cross country and 52 all-academic track accolades, in addition to 48 MPSF all-academic honors. Kepler is in his 16th year coaching at the NCAA Division I level . Prior to coming to Utah, Kepler served as Northern Iowa’s head men’s and women’s cross country coach and assistant track and field coach for two seasons. He was on staff at UNI for a total of seven years, serving as an assistant cross country coach for five years prior to being named head coach in 2003 . Kepler was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2003 after leading the Panthers to a MVC title. The Panthers won 12 MVC titles among cross country and

indoor and outdoor track during his tenure with the Panthers . He coached nine All-Americans at UNI, and 15 athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships between track and cross country . At UNI, he served as the meet manager for the 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championships and Pre-Nationals meet. Kepler was also named the meet director of the annual A . D . Dickinson Relays, one of the largest high school indoor meets in the nation. Kepler competed at Northern Iowa, taking part in both cross country and track and field for the Panthers and serving as a team captain during the 1997-98 school year . As an athlete, Kepler was a member of five MVC championship teams. He earned all-conference honors nine times during his collegiate career, was a two-time all-region cross country selection and a six-time Academic All-MVC honoree. Kepler holds both master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Northern Iowa . He earned his master’s degree in physical education in 2004 and graduated with a bachelor’s in secondary education (geography) in 1998 . Kepler was recently married to Hannah Vickery .

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT KYLE KEPLER

TREVOR JAMESONDirector of Sports Medicine • University of Utah

“Coach Kepler is a great coach . He truly cares about all of his athletes and keeps himself well informed on their injuries and limitations. More than any coach I have worked with, he has been able to help his athletes continue to train and improve despite what injuries they may have. He is able to help motivate his athletes to find their best and be self-motivated to work at achieving their best . I consider him a friend and love to work with him and the athletes in his program because they demand so much of themselves .”

TONY BUSSANHead Cross Country and Track Coach • Webster City Schools, Webster City, IowaPresident of the Iowa Association of Track Coaches

“From the moment he showed up on my front porch as a high school freshman, through an outstanding high school and collegiate running career, to assistant and head coaching duties at the University of Northern Iowa (which

included serving as the director of the NCAA Division I Championships) to now leading the up-and-coming Utah program, Kyle Kepler has been a proven winner, team leader, and program developer . His intense commitment to excellence for each individual and the team as a whole allows him to foster the relationships and development among his squads that create excitement and success .”

BETH WOLFGRAM CSCS, MS, RD, CDSports Nutritionistt • University of Utah Athletic Dept.Adjunct Faculty University of Utah Division of Nutrition

“[Kepler] is very dedicated to the overall health and well-being of his team and he has made performance related nutrition a priority for his athletes. [Kepler] continues to involve me with the team and individual athletes he is concerned about . He emphasizes an

approach that focuses on both the performance of an athlete today, but also the long term health of the athlete . He is a great team player and cares so much about his athletes .”

MIKE JAYUSATF and NCAA Track & Field and Cross Country Meet Announcer

“Kyle Kepler is a fine young coach who does things theright way. He is not afraid of hard work. He will continueto raise the bar for Utah Track & Field and Cross Country .He develops athletes in such a way that they are physically and mentally prepared to do their best . WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT KYLE KEPLERBRAD RASMUSSENGlenwood Girls Track and Field/Cross Country Coach • Glenwood Community Schools (Iowa)

“I met “Kep” while he was an assistant coach at the University of Northern Iowa. My two sons and I attended the track and field/cross country camp at Northern Iowa while he was there. “Kep” and I developed a lasting friendship . His coaching techniques and guidance go far beyond athletics. His personality allows him to get the best from all of the people he meets . He is very loyal to his athletes and coaches and works hard to be the best . It is an honor for me to call him friend and colleague .”

CHELSEA DIGRAZIAFormer University of Utah Track/Cross Country Athlete

“I was a walk-on my freshman year when we were under the supervision of a different coach and was introduced to Coach Kep my sophomore year . Under the excellent coaching and supervision of Kep I dropped my mile time by 25 seconds, broke the school record in the mile and ran my way to an all region spot in cross country . Kep had the ability to assess each runner’s individual talents and devloped appropriate workouts accordingly . I trusted my training from Coach K and knew that if I did what he was asking, I was going to run fast. He was always attentive to each individual runner’s needs and spent time coaching each girl on the team . I feel that Kyle has a great ability to take any runner, assess their strengths and weaknesses and then train them into the best shape of their lives . He is attentive to injury and does not force training through ailments, which is key in sports like cross country and track where overuse and abuse is so common . I know that I am not alone in these opinions about his coaching and have had many successful teammates who would agree . Kep took a cross country team (my sophomore year) who could barely finish a workout and turned them into a 3rd place finisher at the conference meet (my senior year) with two runners making all region and one runner making nationals. Even after my running career finished, I have

watched Kep’s cross country and track programs continue to improve each year with more athletes making it to big caliber meets like Nationals every season.”

CODY KRENKAHead Cross Country Coach/Head Track & Field Coach • Elko High School (Nev.) “Coach Kepler is a great coach who has an amazing ability to take a young athlete fresh out of high school and turn her in to a competitive NCAA Division 1 athlete. He realizes that each athlete has different potential and works hard to get each girl to that potential. As a distance coach for 11 years, I have had more than my fair share of athletes compete at the next level and I can honestly say that the distance program under Coach Kepler at the University of Utah is usually my highest recommendation for my female athletes .”

GARY WILSONRetired University of Minnesota Head Track and Cross Country Coach

“When I recommend a school or a coach, I always ask this question first - would I want my daughter or son working with that coach not only on the track, but also daily? In the case of Kep, the answer is a resounding YES!!!! He is a class act, treats kids right and does everything in a first-class and ethical manner . In short he is THE BEST!!!!”

AMANDA MERGAERTFormer University of Utah Track/Cross Country Athlete

“Coach Kep has a true passion for the sport that is directly reflected in his coaching style. Kep’s even-keeled demeanor, patience and elite degree of track knowledge fueled my confidence and ability to compete on a National level . Being a member of the University of Utah Track and Field & Cross Country team was an experience that I grew from and enjoyed immensely .”

MCCARTHEY FAMILY TRACK & FIELD

The facility was designed by Losee Architects’ Sports Division and the general contractor was Big D Construction. During designated times when it is not reserved for use by Utah athletics, campus recreation and club sports, the track is open to the public . Honored at the dedication in 2010 were philanthropists Tom, Phil, Sarah and Maureen McCarthey. Representing their late brother Shaun was his widow Ning. The McCartheys, longtime Utah athletics supporters, provided a generous lead gift of $2 million. The University of Utah’s

Campus Recreation Services and Administrative Services departments funded the remaining $600,000 of the $2.6 million project. “The McCarthey family has always been very generous throughout our community and the country, for that matter,” said Utah Director of Athletics Chris Hill. “We are very excited that they were so charitable to our program and made this long-awaited track a reality. The addition of the McCarthey Family Track & Field comes at a great time for the University of Utah. It will not only serve our student-athletes, it will also benefit many

MCCARTHEY FAMILY TRACK & FIELD

The McCarthey Family Track & Field was officially dedicated on Oct. 23, 2010. It can be illuminated for night use by four banks of permanent lights and has lawn-style spectator seating on the berm along the east side. The facility features a 400-meter track and nine 42-inch lanes with a Beyon Sports Surface. The interior of the track has a 75x125-yard AstroTurf field, along with areas for the throwing and jumping events.

other groups and individuals throughout the campus .” “We believe that students and people of all ages need to have a place to run and jump and play games,” said Phil McCarthey . Until the McCartheys stepped forward with their gift, the University of Utah had gone 28 years without an on-campus track and field. A track in old Rice Stadium was removed during an expansion of the stadium back in 1982 and the Utah track team had been training at off-campus sites ever since . “The McCarthey Family Track & Field is monumental in so many ways,” said Utah head coach Kyle Kepler . “As

the home for our track and field program, this facility has given our student-athletes a world-class training and competition venue. In addition to the competitive advantage it offers us, we now have a more flexible practice schedule, which enhances the academic opportunities for our student-athletes. The McCarthey Family Track & Field also sends a very clear message to prospective recruits about the vision of our program’s future, which includes developing some of the best track and field student-athletes in the country. We will be forever thankful to the McCarthey family for its generous support of this facility and our program .”
