Losing 11 seniors, including five-time All-American Amanda Mergaert, the Utes will be looking for their underclassmen to play a significant role in the upcoming season . Despite the youth in most positions, the team will be aided by the return of seniors Stephanie Jolley and Alyssa Johnson in the sprinting events. Furthermore, the throwers will be bolstered by the return of junior Aoife Hickey . The distance group will be strengthened by the return of junior Rebekah Winterton, who took much of 2013 off due to injury. “This team is about as well rounded as we have had here at Utah in awhile,” Kepler stated . “Obviously,

we lost a great deal of talent, experience, and success through graduation last year. However, in all of the event groups we have very capable athletes who have been to the NCAA Championships or were on the verge of qualifying a year ago. “I also feel we have some very talented newcomers who can help us right away . We have the potential to send another large group to the NCAA Championships and continue improving in the Pac-12 as well .” Utah got its indoor season underway on Jan . 11 at the BYU Invitational. On April 11, the Utes will

host their annual home Utah Spring Classic at the McCarthey Family Track and Field .

DISTANCE Fresh off a solid season in cross country, the Utah distance runners have turned their full attention to the track. Junior Rebekah Winterton qualified for her first NCAA Cross Country Championships in November and will look to continue that momentum onto the track as she competes in the longer distance events . Winterton and junior Susannah Hurst both qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the 10,000m last year .

Junior Andrea Chavez will also compete as a distance runner, but will focus on the 800m, mile and 1,500m events. Chavez finished seventh at the Pac-12 Championships in 2013 and was a 2012 NCAA Preliminaries qualifier in the 800. The distance group will also be aided by the addition of five freshmen who all showcased a high level of talent during the cross country season . “We have three distance student athletes returning with NCAA meet experience,” Kepler said . “We will rely on them, and hopefully a few of the other veterans can step up and continue to make strides in their direction.”

SPRINTS/HURDLES Under the watch of associate head coach Burke Bockman, the sprints and hurdles group has continually improved during its time in the Pac-12. During the indoor season, Stephanie Jolley will make her final appearance for the Utes. An NCAA qualifier, Jolley emerged as a top 400 hurdle athlete in the conference following a breakout senior outdoor campaign in 2013 .

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Entering its third year as a member of the Pac-12 Conference, the Utah women’s track & field team is gearing up for another successful campaign in 2014. Now in his ninth season, head coach Kyle Kepler is challenged with the task of preparing a young squad to compete in the nation’s top conference.

Alyssa Johnson will compete for the Utes during the outdoor season after gaining an extra season due to redshirt . Her presence in the 400 and on relay teams will provide experience and depth . Bockman will also rely on senior Rosalie Waller and junior Alexandria Eisenbeiss to play a big role in the group’s success. Waller is a two-time qualifier for the NCAA Preliminaries in the 800 and Eisenbeiss also qualified in the event in 2013. Both have filled crucial

roles on relay teams that have posted historic marks in Utah’s record books. The squad will also feature five incoming freshmen that will be counted on for an immediate impact . “This is a diverse group in regard to experience,” Kepler commented . “Waller headlines this group . She is a two-time NCAA qualifier in the 800 meters and has been a Pac-12 scorer on two different occasions. “Fifth-year seniors Jolley and Johnson will be counted on to provide leadership . We also look for freshmen Rhianna Williams, Alyssa Atisme and Christine Van Brocklin to make an immediate impact as well .”

JUMPS The jumps group features many new faces, including volunteer coach Jared Ocana, who will help Coach Bockman oversee the short sprints and horizontal jumpers . Senior pole vaulter Theresa Waybright will be the leader of the group . Alongside Waybright will be true freshmen Courtney Jost (high jump, long jump, triple jump) and Kayla Taulapapa (long jump, triple jump) . With only one year of collegiate experience combined, the group shows promising talent heading into the indoor season . “Fifth-year senior pole vaulter Theresa Waybright headlines this group,” Kepler stated . “Freshman Courtney Jost is a three-event athlete, who should be able to adjust to this level quickly. The addition of sophomore Kailey Hansen, who was injury-plagued during the 2013 outdoor season, will also provide depth in the high jump .”

THROWS The throws group enters the season with the most experience led by the return of Aoife Hickey (weight throw, hammer throw) and Nikkie Rudder (hammer throw, shot put, discus) . During the outdoor

season last year, Hickey qualified for the European Championships in the hammer throw . Under the direction of assistant coach Tapio Kuusela, Hickey has developed and will look to make a splash in the weight throw during the indoor season . Rudder also returns to the group after taking

a redshirt season in 2013 . At the 2012 Pac-12 Championships, Rudder earned seventh in the shot put . The throws group will also be enhanced by the addition of freshmen Ilse Kaaja (hammer throw) and Kassie Nagel (shot put, discus) . “With top returner and NCAA qualifier Destanae Howerton-Davis redshirting, we will be counting on fifth-year senior Nikkie Rudder in the shot and discus,” Kepler stated. “Redshirt junior and NCAA qualifier Aoife Hickey will look to continue her success in the hammer throw . Kaaja will provide depth and talent in the hammer as well . Another freshman, Nagel will be

Kyle Kepler is heading into his ninth year as the head coach of the Utah women’s cross country and track & field programs. Kepler’s organization and attention to detail have allowed him to develop a solid foundation and create a competitive program that has steadily improved each year.

In 15 years of coaching at the NCAA Division I level, Kepler has seen 33 conference champions, 149 all-conference athletes, 60 NCAA qualifiers, 31 NCAA finals qualifiers, and 12 NCAA All-Americans. Kepler’s influence on his student-athletes is not just visible on the track, but also in the classroom. The women’s cross country squad has been honored by USTFCCCA as an All-Academic team seven out of the previous eight seasons with the 2012 team posting a GPA of 3.317. The track and field team has been a USTFCCCA All-Academic team during six of the previous eight seasons with the 2013 team posting a GPA of 3 .171 .

2013-14 During the 2013 cross country season, Kepler helped junior Rebekah Winterton to her first NCAA Cross Country Championships bid. Winterton finished 89th overall, marking the fifth time under Kepler’s reign that a Utah cross country student-athlete has finished in the top 90 at the NCAA Championships. The Utes also finished eighth as a team at both the Pac-12 Conference and Mountain Regional Championships .

2012-13 Under Kepler’s direction, the 2012 women’s cross country team posted a monumental season . Senior Amanda Mergaert qualified for her third-consecutive NCAA Championships and became the first All-American from Utah in 25 years. Her 14th place finish is the highest ever recorded by a Utah athlete at the NCAA Championships . Kepler also coached the Utes to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Regional, which marked the second-highest finish for the Utes in school history, as well as the first time in program history that Utah defeated in-state rival BYU at the regional meet .

The team continued its success into the indoor season. At the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, the Utes earned 10th place, and were again led by the resilience of Mergaert, who capped off the indoor season with an All-American fifth-place performance in the mile at the NCAA Championships . The team continued to succeed as it moved outdoors and into Pac-12 Conference competition. In the second season as a member of the conference, Utah captured 11th place and qualified 10 athletes for the NCAA West Preliminary Round . The season again concluded with Mergaert again making history in the 1,500 by placing third and earning All-America honors . Mergaert is only the second Ute to earn All-America recognition in all three sports in the same academic year. Off the track, Kepler saw 19 student-athletes receive Pac-12 academic honors .

2011-12 In the inaugural Pac-12 season, Kepler led Utah into the most elite cross country conference in the nation. During the year, the Utes outperformed expectations and finished eighth at the NCAA Mountain Regionals. Kepler also coached Mergaert to her second consecutive NCAA qualifying performance, becoming the first Utah cross country athlete to earn All-Pac-12 accolades . Not only did Kepler’s attention focus on the athletic sphere, but his persistence for achievement in the classroom helped the Utes earn the second-highest GPA in the conference (3 .308) . During the 2012 indoor track and field season, Kepler coached Mergaert to the school’s first MPSF individual title in the mile, shattering her own school-record performance with a time of 4:39.29. Kepler also oversaw the development of the distance medley relay, which finished the season ranked 15th in the country and set a new school-record time (11:05.78) for the second consecutive year . The Utes found a great deal of success in its inaugural Pac-12 outdoor track and field season, which ended in a 10th-place finish with 21 points. Earning the 21 team points were seven different individuals and one relay

KYLE KEPLERteam. Senior Brianna LeRoy became the first Utah track athlete to earn All-Pac-12 honors with her performance in the high jump. LeRoy went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships, finishing 22nd overall to earn third-team All-America accolades . Kepler also helped Mergaert to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, earning second-team All-America honors in the 1,500 after breaking the school record and missing the finals by .15 of a second. Kepler coached nine athletes to NCAA qualifier marks (six were first-time qualifiers). The six first-time qualifiers featured one junior, two sophomores and three true freshmen, all of whom finished in the top 50 at the NCAA Championships in their respective events. Mergaert also finished the year meeting the U.S. Olympic Trials ‘B’ qualifying standard.

2010-11 In the 2010 cross country season, Kepler led a very young Ute squad to a fifth-place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championships . Kepler served as meet director when the Utes hosted the 2010 NCAA West Regional, which received great reviews from critics and coaches from around the region . Under Kepler’s guidance, Mergaert took advantage of her home course and ran to a ninth-place finish and qualified for the NCAA Championships, where she finished 45th overall. The 2011 indoor track and field season saw the Utes finish fifth at the MWC Indoor Championships. Junior Langley Iverson finished second in the high jump at the conference championships to qualify for the NCAA Championships with a mark just shy of a school record . Iverson cleared the six-foot barrier twice throughout the season en-route to a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Championships . The distance medley relay team comprised of Alyssa Abbott, Alyssa Johnson, Lucy Yates, and Mergaert ran a new school-record time of 11:11.71 and earned a second-place finish at the Alex Wilson Invitational. That quartet was 13th in the country and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Throughout the indoor season, the Utes broke three school records, including the mile three different times by

Mergaert . The success the Utes experienced during the indoor season carried over to the outdoor season where Kepler saw his athletes break three more school records, including the five-kilometer (Abbott), which had not been touched in over 23 years, as well as Angela Kaplar (100 hurdles), and Abbott and Mergaert (1,500). Mergaert qualified for the NCAA Championships and finished 14th in the 1,500 . At the Drake Relays, the Utah distance medley relay won the event with a school-record time of 11:17.09. Abbott and Mergaert finished second and third in the 1,500 with Abbott’s time (4:19.73) breaking the 30-year-old school record . Mergaert would go on to break that record with her winning performance of 4:16.57 at the NCAA Regional Championships. LeRoy scored in five events (heptathlon, 100 hurdles, long jump, javelin, and high jump) at the conference meet to lead the Utah effort in its final appearance at the MWC Outdoor Championships.

2009-10 During the 2009 cross country season, Kepler guided one of the youngest teams in the country to a sixth-place finish at the MWC Championships, with two freshmen finishing in the top 30. At the NCAA Mountain Regional meet, four of Utah’s five scoring runners were freshmen. Kepler not only coached the young athletes with a high level of performance, but emphasized the importance of

HEAD COACH KYLE KEPLERacademics with five of his cross country athletes achieving academic all-conference honors . At the MWC Indoor Championships, the Utes finished fourth overall for the second consecutive year. In outdoor track and field, Utah finished sixth overall at the conference meet, but scored 70 or more points for the second-straight year . At the MWC Indoor Championships, Utah’s distance medley team comprised of Mergaert, Chelsey Kaplar, Lucy Yates, and Alyssa Abbott set a new school record and won their first conference title with a time of 11:38.59. The distance medley team finished nearly 11.5 seconds faster than second-place BYU, who had won the event nine of the 10 previous years prior to Utah’s victory. Abbott went on to win her first individual conference title in the 3,000 (9:55.54) the next day. As a freshman, Mergaert claimed the runner-up spot in the mile run in a new school record time (4:51.21). Sophomore Iverson claimed all conference honors in the high jump with clearance of 5-8 .75 feet that gave her a runner-up finish as well. Sarah Grimm (weight throw) and the 4x400 relay team were third-place finishers and earned all-MWC honors . Utah’s DMR ended the season ranked 14th in the country after running a school-record 11:13.77 at the Notre Dame Last Chance qualifying meet . The outdoor season saw Abbott run to Utah’s first-ever Drake Relays championship in the 1,500 with a time of 4:23.48. She was also the conference champion in that event with a time of 4:29.98. Grimm broke the school record in the hammer throw with her toss of 207-1 .75 feet at the Mark Faldmo Invitational. Grimm (hammer throw), Kaplar (400 hurdles), Iverson (high jump), and the 4x400 relay earned all-MWC honors. Yates qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in her career, where she finished 23rd overall in the 800. Her time (2:06.21) in the preliminary round at the NCAA West Regional Championships set a new Utah school record . Between indoor and outdoor track and field, Kepler guided his athletes to 16 all-MWC honors. Grimm qualified for the NCAA West Region Championships and was ranked in the top 10 in the nation for the hammer throw during the last half of the season . Kepler saw eight athletes qualify for regionals under the new qualifying system. Twenty athletes from the track and field team also earned academic all-conference honors .

2008-09 The 2008 season was a banner year for Coach Kepler and the Utes . More than any coach I have worked with, he has been able to help his athletes continue to train and improve despite what injuries they may have. He is able to help motivate his athletes to find their best and be self-motivated to work at achieving their best . I consider him a friend and love to work with him and the athletes in his program because they demand so much of themselves .”

TONY BUSSANHead Cross Country and Track Coach • Webster City Schools, Webster City, IowaPresident of the Iowa Association of Track Coaches

“From the moment he showed up on my front porch as a high school freshman, through an outstanding high school and collegiate running career, to assistant and head coaching duties at the University of Northern Iowa (which

included serving as the director of the NCAA Division I Championships) to now leading the up-and-coming Utah program, Kyle Kepler has been a proven winner, team leader, and program developer . His intense commitment to excellence for each individual and the team as a whole allows him to foster the relationships and development among his squads that create excitement and success.”

“[Kepler] is very dedicated to the overall health and well-being of his team and he has made performance related nutrition a priority for his athletes. [Kepler] continues to involve me with the team and individual athletes he is concerned about . He emphasizes an

approach that focuses on both the performance of an athlete today, but also the long term health of the athlete . He is a great team player and cares so much about his athletes .”

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT KYLE KEPLERBRAD RASMUSSENGlenwood Girls Track and Field/Cross Country Coach • Glenwood Community Schools (Iowa)

“I met “Kep” while he was an assistant coach at the University of Northern Iowa. My two sons and I attended the track and field/cross country camp at Northern Iowa while he was there. “Kep” and I developed a lasting friendship. His coaching techniques and guidance go far beyond athletics. His personality allows him to get the best from all of the people he meets . He is very loyal to his athletes and coaches and works hard to be the best . It is an honor for me to call him friend and colleague .”

CHELSEA DIGRAZIAFormer University of Utah Track/Cross Country Athlete

“I was a walk-on my freshman year when we were under the supervision of a different coach and was introduced to Coach Kep my sophomore year . Under the excellent coaching and supervision of Kep I dropped my mile time by 25 seconds, broke the school record in the mile and ran my way to an all region spot in cross country . Kep had the ability to assess each runner’s individual talents and devloped appropriate workouts accordingly . I trusted my training from Coach K and knew that if I did what he was asking, I was going to run fast. He was always attentive to each individual runner’s needs and spent time coaching each girl on the team . I feel that Kyle has a great ability to take any runner, assess their strengths and weaknesses and then train them into the best shape of their lives . He is attentive to injury and does not force training through ailments, which is key in sports like cross country and track where overuse and abuse is so common . I know that I am not alone in these opinions about his coaching and have had many successful teammates who would agree . Kep took a cross country team (my sophomore year) who could barely finish a workout and turned them into a 3rd place finisher at the conference meet (my senior year) with two runners making all region and one runner making nationals. Even after my running career finished, I have

watched Kep’s cross country and track programs continue to improve each year with more athletes making it to big caliber meets like Nationals every season.”

CODY KRENKAHead Cross Country Coach/Head Track & Field Coach • Elko High School (Nev.) “Coach Kepler is a great coach who has an amazing ability to take a young athlete fresh out of high school and turn her in to a competitive NCAA Division 1 athlete. He realizes that each athlete has different potential and works hard to get each girl to that potential. As a distance coach for 11 years, I have had more than my fair share of athletes compete at the next level and I can honestly say that the distance program under Coach Kepler at the University of Utah is usually my highest recommendation for my female athletes .”

Shapard’s career was highlighted by her 13th-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships with a time of 48.36 and her appearance at the 2009 USA Outdoor Championships . In 2007 Amanda Feigt placed herself as one of the best all-around track and field athletes in Utah history. After winning the MWC title in the heptathlon, she qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the long jump and the 400 hurdles . Feigt went on to the NCAA finals in the heptathlon and the 400 hurdles. During his tenure at Utah, Bockman has coached five conference champions, 48 all- conference performers, 25 NCAA qualifiers, and eight NCAA finalists. Prior to Utah, Bockman spent two

McCARTHEY FAMILY TRACK & FIELD

The McCarthey Track & Field was officially dedicated on Oct. 23, 2010. It can be illuminated for night use by four banks of permanent lights and has lawn-style spectator seating on the berm along the east side. The facility features a 400-meter track with nine 42-inch lanes with a Beyon Sports Surface. The interior of the track has a 75x125-yard AstroTurf field, along with areas for the throwing and jumping events.

The facility was designed by Losee Architects’ Sports Division and the general contractor was Big D Construction. During designated times when it is not reserved for use by Utah athletics, campus recreation and club sports, the track is open to the public. Honored at the dedication in 2010 were philanthropists Tom, Phil, Sarah and Maureen McCarthey. Representing their late brother Shaun was his widow Ning. The McCartheys, longtime Utah athletics supporters, provided a generous lead gift of $2 million. The University of Utah’s Campus Recreation Services and Administrative Services departments funded the remaining $600,000 of the $2.6 million project . “The McCarthey family has always been very generous throughout our community and the country, for that matter,” said Utah Director of Athletics Chris Hill. “We are very excited that they were so charitable to our program and made this long-awaited track a reality. The addition of the McCarthey Family Track & Field comes at a great time for the University of Utah. It will not only serve our student-athletes, it will also benefit many other groups and individuals throughout the campus .” “We believe that students and people of all ages need to have a place to run and jump and play games,” said Phil McCarthey . Until the McCartheys stepped forward with their gift, the University of Utah had gone 28 years without an on-campus track and field. A track in old Rice Stadium was removed during an expansion of the stadium back in 1982 and the Utah track team had been training at off-campus sites ever since. “The McCarthey Family Track & Field is monumental in so many ways,” said Utah head coach Kyle Kepler . “As the new home for our track and field program, this facility will give our student-athletes a world-class training and competition venue. In addition to the competitive advantage it offers us, we will now have a more flexible practice schedule, which will enhance the academic opportunities for our student-athletes . The McCarthey Family Track & Field will also send a very clear message to prospective recruits about the vision of our program’s future, which includes developing some of the best track and field student-athletes in the country. We will be forever thankful to the McCarthey family for its generous support of this facility and our program .”

The Pac-12 championship tradition includes 459 all-time team titles won by league institutions, with 309 men’s titles and 150 women’s championships. Utah brought 20 national championships to the league. The Pac-12 far exceeds the total of any other conference. In fact, the next two closest competitors—the Big Ten (262) and the SEC (204)—have just seven more team titles combined than the Pac-12 has alone. Pac-12 institutions have won 11 NCAA titles in women’s cross country, eight in women’s indoor track & field, and six in women’s outdoor track & field. The Pac-12 Conference won eight NCAA titles during the 2012-13 academic year, the most by any conference. It marks the 12th time in the last 13 years—and the 47th time in 53 years—the Pac-12 has led or tied all conferences in NCAA championships won . The Pac-12’s eight national championships came in the form of five women’s titles and three men’s/combined crowns. Five different Pac-12 institutions claimed NCAA titles and USC was the only team in the country with three titles this year. Oregon also won a pair of national championships, joining only the Trojans, Princeton, North Carolina, Florida and Michigan to capture multiple NCAA crowns this season. USC swept the men’s and women’s water polo titles, winning its fifth-straight men’s crown . The Trojans were dominant en route to winning the women’s golf title, winning by a NCAA-record 24 strokes. The Ducks won their first women’s cross country championship since 1987, then took home the women’s indoor track title for the fourth-consecutive year. Stanford reclaimed the women’s tennis national championship, its first since 2010, while Colorado won the skiing championship for the second time in three years. UCLA’s win in baseball was the program’s first in the sport and the institution’s nation-leading 109th NCAA title all-time. In addition, Stanford clinched its unprecedented 19th-consecutive Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, an award presented annually to the top intercollegiate athletic program in the country. The Cardinal has won at least one NCAA title for 36-consecutive years and is one of only two schools in the country, along with UCLA, to have won over 100 NCAA titles.

With more than 120 Nobel Laureates across all of its campuses and the first to reach 450 NCAA Championships, the Pac-12 Conference is synonymous with both academic excellence and athletic success, having earned the nickname “Conference of Champions.” The Pac-12 opened a new chapter in its long and storied history on July 1, 2011 with the addition of the University of Utah and the University of Colorado.
