All-American Warriors

Three current members of the WSU softball team have earned All-American accolades, with Kathy Crudo, Molly Link and Stacey Struzynski begin named to the nation’s most elite squad. Since Greg Jones took over as head coach, 14 Warriors have earned All-American honors. At least one Warrior has been an All-American selection in seven of the last 12 years.

Warrior CoachesWarriors

Winona State boasts one of the top coaching staffs in the country. The WSU program under Greg Jones has been a model of consistent suc-cess, with the Warriors hosting three NSIC Championship trophies and advancing to five consecutive NCAA Regional Tournaments and seven in the last nine years. Jones and Associate Head Coach Chad Tuescher were named the Central Region’s Coaching Staff of the Year in 2009 after leading WSU to the World Series.

Alumni Field

Winona State moved to Alumni Field for the 2009 season, just in time for the new facility to see the Warriors advance to the NCAA Softball World Series. The field provides one of the top playing atmospheres in the NSIC, with the Warrior faithful standing down the lines to watch WSU compete.

The student part of student-athlete comes first at Winona State. Warrior student-athletes have access to some of the best academic support and facilities in the

country. The Warrior Club Student-Athlete Success Center offers Warriors a place to work on their studies in a comfortable envi-ronment. A full staff of academic advisors is always present to assist student-athletes with questions and concerns regarding their classes. The results have been stunning. WSU student-athletes recorded a cumulative 3.18 GPA during the Spring 2011 semester, the highest single-semester mark ever among Warrior student-athletes.

Winona State student-athletes are truly a part of the community they live in. As community members, Warriors look to give back in any way possible. During the 2010-11 academic year, Winona State student-athletes donated over 3,000 hours of their time to projects designed to give back to the Winona area.

History of the NSICFrom its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference

has matured into a 14-team union of upper Midwest colleges and universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA Division II.

The NSIC can trace its roots to 1932 when six schools, including Bemidji State University, Minnesota State Univer-sity, Mankato, Minnesota State University Moorhead, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and Winona State University signed on as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today.

Southwest Minnesota State University was added in 1969, followed by Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (NE) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the Uni-versity of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006, and Augustana College, in 2008.

Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth later left the league to join the North Central Conference but returned to the NSIC in 2008. University of Minnesota, Morris and Michigan Tech University were once part of the NSIC family as well. In July of 2012, the NSIC will again expand with the addition of Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls, bring the league to 16 members for the 2012-13 academic season.

In 1992 the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional North-ern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and the Northern Sun Conference (NSC), the home of women’s athletics since 1979.

Before NSIC affiliates became certified for championship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filled prominent roles in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC clubs annually dispatched qualified student-athletes to national tournaments and captured several NAIA teams and individual championships.

The NSIC celebrates its 80th season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning nine national titles in the last six years. Winona State men claimed NCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and narrowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007. In addition, the Warriors established a NCAA II record of 57 consecutive victories.

Concordia University launched an ongoing streak of four consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008 the Golden Bears won 37 straight matches after a season opening loss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a marvelous encore in 2009 with a perfect 37-0 finish, a third straight national crown and a winning streak of 74 straight matches. In 2010 the Golden Bear extended that win streak to 75 before dropping their second match of the season. They started 2010 with a 10-4 record before ripping off 22 straight wins on their way to their fourth straight national title.

In a most surprising run, Minnesota Duluth completed a perfect 15-0 season by winning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholarships by league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and number three Northwest Missouri State. Two years later in 2010 the Bulldogs repeated that feat, going 15-0 again to win the national championship. The Bulldogs became the first NCAA DII football squad to win two national championships with undefeated records.

Minnesota State added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Bas-ketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 victory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA record for total points in the title game.

Since 2000, the NSIC has also participated in Mineral Water Bowl. Hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Mineral Water Bowl matches the highest-finishing teams from the NSIC and the Mid-America Inter-collegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not selected for the NCAA Division II football playoffs. Winona State defeated Missouri Western State, 43-41, in triple overtime, the Warriors, first-ever NCAA II post-season win in 2000.

In addition, NSIC student-athletes have made a major splash nationally as well, collecting a batch of individual titles. Concordia setter Maggie McNamara was honored as the NCAA Division II Honda Women’s Athlete of the Year, the latest NSIC representative decorated with national Player of the Year honors.

The NSIC has also had three athletes awarded with the NCAA Elite 88 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 champi-onships. Earning the award were Kendra Huettl (Minnesota State, Softball, 2011), Matt Braithwaite (Augustana College, Cross Country, 2010) and Lauren Brown (Winona State, Outdoor Track and Field, 2010).

Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by attending these colleges and universities. The NSIC is committed to providing rewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom are sizable, indeed, the NSIC is surely well positioned for the future.

Winona State SEASON OUTLOOK A potent and powerful offense carried Winona State in 2011, and a pair of key cogs in the middle of that lineup return. All-Americans Molly Link and Kathy Crudo - as well as a healthy Stacey Struzynsik, herself an All-American in 2009 - put Winona State in position to have a serious impact on the diamond in 2012. The Warriors have become a postseason staple and advanced to theNCAARegional Tournament for the fifth consecutive seasonand seventh time in the last nine years under head coach Greg Jones. Winona State posted a 37-13 overall mark last season and came with-in a game of reaching the NCAA Super Region Tournament.

THE LINEUP WinonaStatehasholestofillinitslineupasitmustreplaceatrioof departed seniors, but with Link and Crudo leading the way, the WSU offense should be powerful once again. Link earned First Team All-American honors after batting .428 in herfirstcampaignwiththeWarriors.SheearnedbothNSICPlayerand Newcomer of the Year while hitting 12 home runs and driving in 53. Link recorded an on-base percentage of .469 while slugging .744.Defensivelyshewasoutstandingaswell,postinga.988fieldingpercentageatfirstbase. Crudo joined Link as an All-American after hitting .398 with ten home runs and 49 RBI. Crudo started all 50 games for the Warriors behind the plate and played spectacular defense, committing just two errors on the season. Twopositionsthatwillseeachangeareincenterandrightfield.All-American Molly Bjelland, who set the WSU career RBI record in 2011,andDallasSchmackergraduated,leavingholesintheoutfield.Sophomore Brooke Piotrowski will shift to center, where her speed will be an asset. Piotrowski had a strong season in her Warrior debut, batting .385 in 48 games. She will move into the leadoff position as well and will be counted on to set the table for the WSU power hit-ters. Senior Sam Hildebradt and sophomore Melissa Reyes are candi-dates toearn theother twooutfield spots.Hildebrandthit .289 inlimited action last season but is a .337 career hitter. Reyes had 15 at bats as a freshman, earning three hits. Senior Kim Wachholder is a versatile player who can play multiple infieldpositionsfortheWarriors.Shehadastrongdebutseasonin2011after transferring fromNorthern Iowa, hitting .353withfivehome runs and 38 RBI. A consistent hitter, Wachholder had a team-high 14 game hitting streak during the middle of the season. Second base will be manned by junior Kaitlin Hardee, who hit .252 during the 2011 season. The Warrior lineup will be enhanced by Brittany Stewart, who sat out the 2011 season after transferring from Augustana. Stewart, who will also pitch for WSU, will play third base during the games she isn’t in the circle. Sophomores Lauren Flannery, Kylee Homewood and Jenni-fer Topor will provide depth for the WSU offense while freshmen Courtney Kloes, Ashley Walker, Karli DesLauriers, Jessica Kullmann and Morgan Lintz will be given an opportunity to make an impact on thefield.

THE PITCHING STAFF Winona State will lean on All-American Stacey Struzynski, who returned to form last season after suffering an injury in 2010. Stru-

zynskifinished2011witha12-4overallrecordandanERAof 2.05.She struck out 114 in 116 innings of work and pitched all 17 2/3 in-nings of an epic pitcher’s dual for the Warriors in the NCAA Central Regional Tournament against Wayne State. Stewart will see plenty of time in the circle after posting a 21-11 record and 2.87 ERA in two seasons at Augustana. Michelle Lund will also have opportunities to contribute after posting a 7-1 mark as a freshman a season ago. Freshman Kelsey Anderson was named Minnesota Ms. Softball for Burnsville High School and will quickly become a major cog in the WSU rotation. Sophomore Felicia Meyer will also see action after pitching in two games in 2011.

THE OUTLOOK TheWarriorsweretabbedtofinishthirdintheNSICinavoteof the league’s coaches, coming in just behind Augustana and Minnesota State. Augustana won the conference in both 2010 and 2011 while Minnesota State beat Winona State in the championship game of the NCAA Central Region Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series. It came as no surprise as well that Link was named NSIC Preseason Player of the Year. A strong offense and added depth in the pitching staff should have the Warriors in the hunt deep into the season. A sixth consecu-tive trip to the NCAA postseason is certainly the goal, and the War-riors are built to play deep into May.

Greg Jones is in his 12th season as head softball coach at Winona State, and has seen the program reach new heights under his leader-ship.

Jones, already the program’s all-time wins leader, took the team to its first ever NCAA Division II Softball World Series in 2009. The team won the NCAA Central Region title that year and finished fifth in the final national rankings. Jones and his assistants were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Regional Coaching Staff of the Year for their efforts.

The Warriors have been NSIC regular season champions three times (2003, 2005, 2007) under Jones and claimed the conference tourna-ment title in 2003, 2008 and 2009. The team has advanced to the postseason seven times, including trips following the last five seasons. Jones has been named NSIC Coach of the Year twice and has led the Warriors to at least 30 wins in 11 of his campaigns, including six seasons of 40 or more victories. He is Winona State’s all-time leader in wins (440) and winning percentage (.720). He has also dominated in conference play, posting a 162-39 (.806) mark in NSIC contests.

Players coached by Jones have been selected as All-Americans 14 times. Warriors have been named to the All-NSIC team 59 times while 29 players have been All-Region selections under Jones. He has also tutored four NSIC Players of the Year, two NSIC Pitchers of the Year and three NSIC Newcomers of the Year.

Warriors have also had success in the classroom. Jones’ players have been named to the conference’s all-academic team 54 times with 13 earning Regional All-Academic honors. Two WSU players have been awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

The 2009 season was historic on many levels for Winona State. The Warriors won 50 games for the first time in program history, going 50-13 overall and 20-6 in the NSIC, and broke 14 school records. The team defended its NSIC Tournament crown and advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament. WSU hosted the NCAA Regional Tournament for the first time in school history, going unbeaten on their way to its first regional championship. The Warriors also hosted the Super Region 3 Tournament, beating Mesa State twice to reach the NCAA Division II World Series. The team won its first ever

World Series game, a 2-1 victory over LeMoyne College, before bow-ing out of the tournament.

The accolades for the Warriors that season were impressive. Five players were All-NSIC selections, three were named to the confer-ence’s all-tourmanet team, four were All-Region picks and Amanda Wilhelm was named to the World Series All-Tournament team. Four players off the 2009 team ended the season as All-Americans.

In just his third season, Jones led the Warriors to the 2003 NSIC regular season championship for the first time in school history. Wi-nona State beat Augustana, 7-4, in the Regional Tournament, the first NCAA win in school history. The victory was also significant for Jones as it made him the school’s leader in career victories. It took Jones just three season to reach the milestone.

The Warriors were 41-13 on the season and added the conference tournament title to their trophy case. They also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first timein school history. For his ef-forts, Jones earned the first of his NSIC Coach of the Year awards.

In 2005 the Warriors swept through the conference, posting a 13-1 record in league play while going 41-16 overall. The team claimed its second NSIC regular season championship in three years. The team made its second trip to the NCAA Tournament while crack-ing the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 for the first time. Jones earned individual recognition for his team’s success, being named NSIC Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons.

The Warriors advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, starting a streak of four consecutive NCAA postseason trips. Winona State went 16-2 in the NSIC to earn its third regular season crown in Jones’ first seven seasons. WSU’s record of 43-21 tied the then-school mark for wins in a season, which Jones had previously set in 2002.

In 2008 the Warriors posted a 38-15 overall record with a 14-4 mark in the NSIC. The team went undefeated to claim the NSIC Tour-nament title and received a bid into the NCAA Tournament. WSU posted a 3-2 mark in the tournament, falling in the regional champi-onship game to Emporia State. The second place finish was the best for a Winona State team in the regional tournament up to that point. The team ended the season ranked 15th in the NFCA Top-25 poll.

Jones and the Warriors followed their historic 2009 campaign with a 38-14 record in 2010. The Warriors earned their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament while Jones passed the 400 win mark as Winona State’s head coach.

The 2011 season brought another postseason appearance for Wi-nona State. The Warriors posted a 37-13 overall record and advanced

to the championship game of the regional tournament. Junior first-baseman Molly Link earned NSIC Player and Newcomer of the Year honors and was joined on the All-American team by Mollie Bjelland and Kathy Crudo.

Success has followed Jones wherever he has been. Prior to Winona State, he successfully guided the Wisconsin Diamonds 18-Under softball team to three Wisconsin State Championships, one Midwest Championship, and three National Tournament appearances in five years.

Jones earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1993. He went on to get his Teaching License and Certification from the University of Wiscon-sin-Platteville in 1996.

Tuescher led the Wildcats to four consecutive appearances in the state tournament to go along with three Southern Badger Conference championships.

In his 12 seasons in Verona, as both an assistant and head coach, Tischer led the school to 11 conference titles and nine state tournament appearances.
