ST. JOHN FISHER COLLEGE St. John Fisher College is an independent, liberal arts institution in the Catholic

tradition of American higher education. The College emphasizes liberal learning

for students in traditional academic disciplines, as well as for those in more

directly career-oriented fi elds. The College welcomes qualifi ed students, faculty,

and staff regardless of religious or cultural background.

The campus is situated on 154 park-like acres—a beautiful setting for 24

modern buildings and a warm, friendly campus community of 2,600 full-time

undergraduates. The College offers 31 academic majors in the humanities,

social sciences, sciences, business, and nursing, as well as 10 pre-professional

programs.

Fisher also offers 11 master’s programs and three doctoral programs.

ADMISSIONS PROCESSAdmission to St. John Fisher College is based primarily on the following: high

school record; scores on standardized tests (SAT/ACT); extracurricular activities

and/or work experience; and the high school’s evaluation of the candidate.

Interviews are also considered and strongly encouraged.

A candidate for admission to the freshman class must be a graduate of an

approved secondary school and present a minimum of 16 units of college

preparatory coursework in English, foreign languages, mathematics, and natural

and social sciences. An applicant should present a secondary school average of

85 percent or above in these academic subjects.

Fisher welcomes qualifi ed transfer students from two- and four-year colleges for

both the fall and spring terms. To be considered for admission, transfer students

must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. If the student has

obtained an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S. degree, 60 to 66 credit hours are transferred. All

transfer applicants should consult the Undergraduate Bulletin for details.

FINANCIAL AID It is the philosophy of St. John Fisher College to admit fully qualifi ed students

who can profi t from the educational experience the College offers. The fi nancial

aid programs at Fisher have been developed to help such students fi nance their

education.

Financial assistance comes from a variety of sources, including need-based and

merit-based scholarships, grants, loans, and part-time employment. Nearly all

fi nancial aid programs require applicants to fi le the Free Application for Federal

Student Aid (FAFSA), which analyzes fi nancial need and allows the College

to extend comprehensive fi nancial assistance. Prospective students are

encouraged to submit the FAFSA, which can be obtained from the St. John Fisher

College Financial Aid Offi ce, by February 15, 2010, for fall 2010 admission.

LETTER FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

St. John Fisher College is a vibrant, forward-looking institution with great vision. And after 23 years in athletics at Fisher, I’ve seen many

positive changes—from an expansion of athletic facilities and academic programs to an increase in student involvement in campus life.

For starters, Fisher has the infrastructure in place for any student-athlete to have an excellent academic as well as athletic experience.

We’re a member of the NCAA Division III, but we also participate in the Empire 8 Conference, which consists of Fisher, Elmira, Ithaca,

Rochester Institute of Technology, Alfred, Stevens Tech, Nazareth, Hartwick and Utica. This association fi ts us very well, not only because

these schools are relatively close geographically, but because they share the same competitive spirit.

At Fisher, we believe in linking our athletic department to the total campus community. In fact, this campus-wide involvement on the

part of our student-athletes has actually been proven

to lead to success in the college environment.

We want smart student-athletes. Knowledge is the

cornerstone of any college career. And the 500 Fisher

students who participate in athletics in any given year

have an overall grade point average greater than 3.0.

Many have even received signifi cant academic awards.

Put simply, our student-athletes are truly students.

We also want to develop skilled athletes. Our coaching

staff is highly trained in all aspects of developing

performance character. We seek out, teach,

implement, and obtain feedback on all the latest skill-

development components available to coaches today.

Finally, what we really feel differentiates our program

from others is the tremendous importance we place

on instruction of moral character. Teddy Roosevelt

once said, “To educate a person in mind and not in

morals is to educate a menace to society.” And so, we

continually reinforce the link among morality, ethical

behavior, and academic success.

We believe it’s our responsibility to educate moral,

smart, skilled, and involved student-athletes—not only

because educating the whole person is what puts us

in the top tier of excellence compared to other athletic

programs, but because it’s what helps teach students

how to make a real contribution to society.

2011 Fisher Softball Preview

The St. John Fisher College softball program may very well be

looked past this season by its competitors – a mistake that head

coach Len Maiorani looks forward to as the Cardinals enter the

2011 season with a solid roster and high goals.

“We didn’t play up to the level that we should have last year, but

this season, we’ll be a strong contender for the Empire 8 crown,”

says Maiorani, who enters his 17th season at the helm of the

softball program and ranks as one of the winningest coaches in

NCAA Division III. “In fact, I think being the dark horse may be a

huge benefi t to us.”

Setting sights on regaining the Empire 8 crown that Fisher gave

up last season after winning the title the two seasons before,

the Cardinals look to earn the automatic qualifi er and make a

return trip to the NCAAs. In order to do so, Fisher will rely on its

experienced returners to lead the squad toward those goals.

Highlighting the returners are Fisher’s three captains, who the

Cardinals will look to for leadership. Senior captains Jamie

Harmon, Kristin McCoy, and Lauren O’Brien each enter their

fourth season in their careers at Fisher and have a lot to bring to

the table.

“Not only are the seniors huge contributors on the fi eld, but I

couldn’t have asked for better student-athletes to provide support

off the playing fi eld,” comments Maiorani.

All three seniors should see ample playing time in 2011. Harmon,

a 2008 NCAA Regional All-Tournament selection and a 2009

Empire 8 All-Conference selection, will dominate from both behind

and at the plate. The senior batted .275 in 2010 and scattered

fi ve doubles throughout the season. O’Brien and McCoy will pace

the offense both at the plate and around the bags with their

speed, while pushing for time on defense in the outfi eld.

A key element of 2011’s potential success is focused on

the pitching staff, made up of returning sophomores Sarah

Stefanon, Danielle Leone, and Krista Robarge.

Stefanon, who stepped into Fisher’s Single Season Top Ten as a

freshman with 121.1 innings pitched and 78 strikeouts, should

be able to dominate from the mound by playing on her ability to

change speed to keep opposing batters off their stride. Leone,

who started on the mound in 16 games in 2010 and collected

a 10-6 record, brings with her the strengths of speed and

movement, while Robarge, who saw time at the mound during

the ECAC Championship in May, will be prepared to step in with

immediate relief.

“We’re looking for really good things from Sarah – we’ve seen

a lot of improvement from her,” comments Maiorani. “And with

Danielle fully recovered from her knee injury and Krista ready to

step in in relief, we’re looking at a strong set of young pitchers.”

Harmon returns behind the plate along with sophomores Leanne

Merchant and Shelby Marie. Merchant made 19 starts as

catcher in 2010, and will also be able to fi ll the designated player

position after leading the team with seven home runs and tying for

third on the team with 19 RBI. Marie called pitches in ten games

in 2010, including two starts, and will compete with newcomer

Jessica D’Angelo for more time behind the plate this season.

“Jamie and Leanne played well behind the plate last year; they’ll

be competing for the start. Shelby’s our best defensive catcher

and will push those two for time,” says Maiorani. “And Jessica’s

going to look to get in there right off the bat, and she’s got the

talent to do that.”

Carissa Carlson returns to her post at fi rst base after making

44 starts last season and pacing the Fisher offense with seven

doubles, four home runs, and 23 RBI. Sophomore returner Sarah

Fordyce, who recorded one home run, one double, and fi ve RBI

in three hits last year, will push Carlson for time at the bag.

Junior returner Megan Zoerb, who made 43 starts alternating

between second and third base last season and tied for second

on the team with seven doubles, provides extreme versatility

throughout the infi eld. Zoerb will split time with Robarge at

second, while providing relief for the Cardinals’ surefi re shortstop,

Kelly Jones, who started in 37 of the 38 games she played

last season. Rounding out the infi eld, sophomore returner Kayla

Goodberlet, a 2010 All-Region selection who led the team with

27 RBI and 11 doubles and added six home runs, will look to start

at the hot corner, with D’Angelo to push her.

“We’ve got a solid infi eld and backup if relief is needed. They can

get it done,” Maiorani adds with confi dence.

Junior Jenn Vanek, 2010’s lead-off hitter who batted .357, led

the team with three triples, and tied for a team-best 45 hits,

will be the anchor in the middle of the outfi eld after making 40

starts in centerfi eld last season. Joining her in the outfi eld will

be O’Brien and McCoy, as well as returner Megan Rogers, who

made 13 starts in 2010.

On top of a relatively young, talented group of returners, Maiorani

looks forward to an incoming class highlighted by D’Angelo, a

versatile freshman from Jamestown who will see time at catcher

and third base, along with Alicia Vann, Jennifer Martin, and

Michelle Townsend, who will look to populate the outfi eld.

“Jessica’s an all-around player – she’s great

behind the plate, can hit, and will push Kayla

for time at third,” says Maiorani. “Alicia and

Michelle have great speed to cover the alleys

in the outfi eld and will help us on base, and

Jennifer swings a good bat. I’m really looking

forward to seeing them push the women for

time out there.”

The Cardinals kick off their season at the

Tucson Invitational, where Fisher faces tough

competition from all over the country. The 10

games played in Arizona prep the team for

an equally tough slew of competition upon

returning to Rochester that will pave the road

to the Empire 8 Championships in May.

“It’s not going to be easy, but with effective

pitching, solid defense, and powerful offense,

this team can get back where they were two

years ago with our eyes on the NCAAs,”

comments Maiorani.

It takes talent, leadership, and confi dence

to win a conference and reach a national

tournament. Lucky for Maiorani and his

Cardinals, this team seems to have just that.

Len Maiorani

Len Maiorani, who began coaching at Fisher in 1995, ranks as one of the

winningest all-time coaches in NCAA Division III. In his 16 seasons with

Fisher, Maiorani has not suffered a losing season.

With a 573-289-4 record and a .662 win percentage compiled over his

23-year career, Maiorani ranks among the top 20 in NCAA Division III for

most wins and top 30 for best winning percentage.

Last spring, Maiorani led the Cardinals to a 27-20 overall record and the

runner-up spot in the ECAC Upstate Championship.

In the 2009 spring season, Maiorani led the Cardinals to a 32-12

record and their second Empire 8 Conference Championship in as many

years. In the double-elimination tournament, the Cardinals won three of four games to earn the

program’s second automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship and third NCAA Championship

appearance.

Since 1998, the Cardinals have been to the postseason in each and every year, winning between 24

and 39 games each season.

Maiorani began his coaching career at SUNY Brockport, where he led the team to three SUNYAC titles

in seven seasons before coming to Fisher.

Len is a graduate of SUNY Geneseo and retired from the Fairport Central School District after a 33-

year teaching career in 2008. Len and his wife Beth have three children: Lenny, Sean, and Stacia,

and reside in Penfi eld.

Dan Dorscheid

Dan Dorscheid is in his sixth season as an assistant coach with the St.

John Fisher College softball program.

A three-sport standout at Victor High School, Dorscheid previously coached

the American Softball Association’s Finger Lake Lakers for seven years.

Dorscheid is a retired employee of the New York State Thruway. He and

his wife, Terri reside in Farmington. Their two daughters, Danielle and

Michelle, both played softball at Fisher.

Roger Hotel

Roger Hotel is in his tenth season as an assistant coach for the St. John

Fisher College softball program. Hotel is the Cardinals’ pitching coach and

has been extremely helpful in the success and development of Fisher’s

pitching staff.

Hotel, who has coached at several high schools in Wayne and Monroe

counties over the last three decades, is retired and resides in Macedon.

Bari Mance

Bari Mance enters her ninth year as an assistant coach for the softball

team at Fisher.

Mance played four years as a catcher for the Cardinals and paced the

team to a 62-24-1 record in her fi nal two seasons.

Bari graduated from Fisher in 2002 with a bachelor’s in Communication/

Journalism and received a master’s in Adolescent Education in 2005. She

currently lives in Rochester.
