Senior Renee Ramos was selected as an All-ACC First Team member and named to the Louisville/NFCA All-American Mid-At-lantic Second Team. Ramos’ 11 home runs were the third most in school history, while her batting average (.348), total bases (91), slugging percentage (.689) and on-base percentage (.430) were also top five single-season totals by an Eagle. Also entering the BC record book were senior third baseman Dani Weir and then freshman pitcher Nicole D’Argento. Weir’s seven home runs ranked as the 13th best in BC history, while D’Argento’s 35 appearances in the circle were fifth most by a hurler from The Heights.Academically, the Eagles collected 12 distinctions as part of the ACC Honor Roll with Blair Destito becoming BC’s first four-time honoree. The Eagles opened the 2010 campaign going 7-10 in tournament play. BC split four games at the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Tournament, took three of four games at the Stetson Tournament and won two at the UCF Tournament. In regional competition, Boston College put together a 7-4 record, including winning all four games against cross town rivals Boston University and Harvard. The Eagles finished the 2010 season with a 16-33 overall record, and a 2-18 mark in the ACC.

Looking Ahead

Captains Rene Delagrammaticas, Gemma Ypparila and Allison Gage will lead a combination of veteran leadership and talented youth as BC aims to improve upon a year ago. Finley’s 2011 squad features nine starters from a year ago. The departure of seven seniors provides opportunities for the returning letter win-ners and seven freshmen to earn playing time. “We are preaching family this year and everyone is working hard to be a well-knit group,” Head Coach Jennifer Finley stated. “This is a totally new year, with a completely different team. They have a lot of energy, are a pleasure to coach and have a great atti-tude. When they’re in the batter’s box, I just want to see them fight through everything. I feel like this team has a lot of Dustin Pedroias and that’s a good thing to have.”Boston College will face 10 programs that made the NCAA Tour-nament in 2010. Five teams from the ACC – North Carolina, Maryland, Florida State, Virginia, and Georgia Tech – regional foes UMass, BU, and Tennessee all competed in the post-season.“We are very excited,” Finley commented. “The earlier part of the schedule itself will prepare us for the ACC. The conference was

tough last year and is going to be again this year. We’re excited to add Tennessee, Michigan State and other new teams from differ-ent conferences to the slate. This season should be fun.”

Fall Season

The Eagles competed against Boston University, Harvard, Provi-dence and Rhode Island this past fall.“It was great to see our freshmen get out there and watch how our seniors would interact with them,” Finley said. “We had seven freshmen in the fall and have added one more since then. Their learning curve was amazing. From one week to the next, we looked like two different teams. It’s going to be exciting to see them grow throughout the year. When the season starts, it will be interesting to see how well they perform with the pressure on.”

Pitching

The BC rotation will be made up of four pitchers, senior Allison Gage, junior Morgan Kidd, sophomore Nicole D’Argento and freshman Amanda Horowitz.“It’s nice to have four pitchers with different styles,” Finley said. “They have worked really hard this off season and as long as our rotation stays healthy, they can be successful and give our team a chance to do the same.” Gage went 6-8 in 14 starts and led the team with a 3.41 ERA last season. She struck out 41 batters and walked 36, giving up a team-best 51 earned runs in 104.2 innings.“Allison is steady, has worked really hard,” Finley began. “She had a phenomenal freshman year and appears very confident on the mound. She can take control of the batter with the pitches she’s throwing.”Kidd is coming off a red-shirt year. In just 55.2 innings, the Peachtree City, Ga. native recorded 69 strikeouts. “Morgan’s unique style will add to our repertoire,” Finley observed. No one was turned to more than D’Argento was as a freshman a season ago. The Ashland, Mass. product threw 140 innings, total-ing nine complete games and a record of 5-14. D’Argento also led the Eagles with 128 strikeouts, opponent batting average (.254) and two shutouts. The hurler also returns with the highest batting average (.250) and slugging percentage (.359) of her teammates. D’Argento plays in the infield when not in the circle.“Nicole was our go-to pitcher,” Finley stated. “She’s going to get more help this year. She’s a great competitor and looks to be very solid on the mound.”

Horowitz comes to The Heights having posted 595 strikeouts and 13 shutouts at Huntington Beach High School in Westminster, Calif. The three-time team MVP was named to the All-Sea View League First-Team in 2010 and was a second team selection as a junior.

Catchers

Junior Brittany Wilkins will handle most of the catching duties this season. Freshman Meg Scanlon will back her up.Last year, Wilkins had a fielding percentage of .984 in 123 chanc-es and caught six runners stealing from the plate. In the box, she batted .217, with three home runs, 14 RBI and a .342 slugging percentage. “Brittany has developed into a great leader,” Finley commented. “She has learned a lot in her first two years behind the plate and brings a lot of veteran knowledge to the team. Brit has taken an interest in every single pitcher, knows what makes them tick and demands excellence from them. She herself has worked really hard at improving in all aspects of being a catcher. She demands more from her infield and her pitch calling has gotten a lot better. She is a student of the game.”Out of Lawrenceville, N.J., Scanlon was a two-time All-State se-lection by the Star Ledger. The Hun School graduate captained her team as a junior and senior, collecting First-Team Mid-Atlantic Prep League honors in both years.

Infield

Front runners to play the middle appear to be senior Rene Dela-grammaticas and freshman Alana Dimaso.Delagrammaticas started 48 games last year at shortstop, fielded .928 in 180 opportunities, turned five double plays and batted .215 at the plate.“Rene will switch over to second base this season,” Finley fore-shadowed. “We originally brought her in to play second, but had to switch her over to short to help the team. She’s been great, but we feel our team is stronger with her at second. The middles have been working really well together so far, which is great to see.”“We have a couple of options on the corners. Juniors Ali Lynette-Krech and Lizzy Ploen will be seeing time at third base. At first, Nicole [D’Argento] will play when she’s not pitching and Gemma Ypparila will see time there as well.” Lynette-Krech and Ypparila saw limited action during the 2010 season, while Ploen was seen in 38 games.

“Freshmen Ronnie Mae Ayers and Bree Tanke could play there or in the outfield,” Finley stated. “We have a lot more versatility this year, with infielders who can play both as well.A three-time captain from Duvall, Wash., Ayers was named to the All-Metro League First Team all four years at Eastside Catholic.Tanke was a four-year starter at Manalapan High School in N.J. and was twice named to the All-Shore Conference and the Asbury Park Press Class A North first teams.

Outfield

“In the outfield, Maria Pandolfo will complete a very strong core of leadership up the middle,” Finley said. “She started most of last year’s games and will be in centerfield again for us this season.” Pandolfo recorded 39 outs and two assists“Alison Kooistra has also been a mainstay in the outfield for us the last two years and will play left or right depending on the situation,” Finley said. Senior Carolyn Jones, as well as freshmen Tory Speer and Nicole Koszowski will also share playing time.Jones largely came in a pinch runner last year, scoring five runs and stealing one base in 17 appearances.Koszowski led Governor Livingston to a pair of N.J. state champi-onships as a freshman and a senior. The native of Mountainside, was named the Courier News Freshman of the Year before going on to collect Mountain Valley Conference First Team honors three straight years.Speer was a three-time offensive MVP at Mission Viejo. The Tra-buco Canyon, Calif. product concluded her high school career with a .350 batting average and hit 24 homeruns en route to col-lecting All-South Coast League First Team accolades three times and being named to the All-Orange County Second Team on two occasions.

Jennifer Finley is entering her 16th season as the head softball coach at Boston College. Since coming to the Heights, Finley has devel-oped the BC program into a nationally competi-tive team. In her tenure, she has become one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

While at Boston College she has led the Eagles to two Big East Tour-nament Championships, one regular season Big East Co-Championship and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the first-ever at-large bid in program history. Heading up the 2003 Big East Coaching Staff of the Year, she led the Eagles to a 316-241-1 overall record in ten years as a member of the Big East Conference. In her 17 years as a head coach, Finley has amassed a career record of 473-406-1, averaging 28 wins per season.Last year, Boston College coach Finley led the Eagles to a 16-33 record overall, with a 2-18 ACC record. In 2009, the Eagles battled through a number of injuries throughout the season to finish 18-33 overall, with a 3-15 ACC record. In 2008, playing a 63-game season, the longest in the history of the pro-gram, the Eagles recorded a 32-31 overall record, with a 7-14 record in the ACC. Team and individual records were shattered as the Eagles navi-gated a challenging schedule which included nine teams that would even-tually earn bids into the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Finley led the Eagles to a sixth place finish in the conference, including a win over Maryland in the ACC Tournament. The Eagles improved their win total by 17 games from the previous season. In 2007, Finley's Eagles posted an overall record of 15-31. They took a 4-16 conference record into the ACC Tournament. The Eagles came in as the seventh-seed squaring off against the defending league champions from North Carolina State. Finley's team played their game of the year, stunning the Wolfpack 2-0 to become the talk of the tournament. The win marked a historic first ACC Tournament victory for Boston College and signified yet another step forward for Finley's program. In 2006, the Eagles went 22-26 overall with a 6-15 ACC record in their first trip through the competitive conference. In 2005, Finley's Eagles posted a 20-25 mark in their final Big East season. In 2004, BC posted a 33-25 overall record. In addition, the squad posted an 11-9 Big East mark, finishing fourth in the conference. In 2003, the Eagles put forth one of the most successful seasons in re-cent program history. With a 14-5 Big East mark, BC captured a share of the regular season championship. After being eliminated from the conference tournament, the team made the most of the post season as it secured the program’s first-ever at-large NCAA Tournament bid. As the six seed in the Tucson regional, BC went 2-2 before bowing out. In addition to her team’s success, Finley enjoyed some of her own as she collected her career 300th victory on April 13, 2003 with a 9-0 blanking of Virginia Tech.In 2002, the Eagles posted a 26-26 overall mark and an 11-9 conference re-

cord. The team produced three All-Conference second team selections and one player -- Cara Blumfield -- became the school’s first All-American and was ranked among the nation’s top 10 batters all season with her .445 mark. Finley led the 2001 Eagles to a 31-24 record and the third-highest win total in school history. BC placed Jen Asbury on the All-Big East first team and both Tekae Malandris and Jacqui Goodchild on the league’s all-rookie squad. Malandris earned the school’s second-lowest earned run average ever (1.32) and struck out 166 batters. Finley led the Eagles to a 20-25 season in 2000, good for a third-place tie in the Big East after surviving the season without several of the team’s top players lost to injury. The Eagles earned the fourth seed in the Big East Tournament, which they hosted for the fourth time. Boston College placed two players on the All-Big East First Team. Ryan earned Big East Rookie of the Year honors as well, breaking the conference’s single-season strike-out record by fanning 106 batters in 15 league games. In 1999, Finley picked up her 200th career coaching victory in a double-header sweep of Fairfield on April 25. The Eagles, who went 27-20 and finished third in the Big East, had two players named to the Louisville Slug-ger Northeast All-Region First Team. Mary Dietz earned All-Big East first

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston’s Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher edu-cation to be founded in the city of Boston. Today, it is one of the foremost universities in the nation, with a coeducational enrollment of 14,500 un-dergraduate and graduate students. Boston College has drawn students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries. Boston College has grown not just in size, but also in stature and di-versity. Today, it is ranked among the top 34 national universities by US News & World Report. Its Graduate School of Social Work is listed among the nation’s top 15, also by US News, while the graduate pro-grams of its Lynch School of Education are among the top 20 and its Connell School of Nursing and Law School are among the top 30. In addition, eight undergraduate programs of the Carroll School of Manage-ment placed among the top 10 in the nation according to BusinessWeek, with accounting placing first in its category. Boston College is among the nation’s most selective universities, with nearly 30,000 applications received for its 2,250-member Class of 2013, and is numbered among the top American private research universities.

After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others.“Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transform-ing experience for young men and women.”A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual, is the faculty’s dedication to teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report.

A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual develop-ment, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. Students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help oth-ers in need, whether in Boston or Belize. Each year, more than 5,000 undergraduates give some 375,000 hours of community service in the Boston area, while more than 650 students trade vacation for service during Spring Break. Nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually. Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 31 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest gradu-ation rates in Division IA. BC offers a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Cen-ter for Ignatian Spirituality; Center for Catholic Education; Church in the 21st Century Center; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center for Human Rights and International Justice; Center for Christian-Jewish Learning; Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Sloan Center on Aging and Work; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Edu-cational Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships; Center for Corpo-rate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs; Urban Ecology Institute and Weston Observatory.

KPRESIDENTWilliam P. Leahy, S.J. became the 25th presi-dent of Boston College on July 31, 1996. Born in Omaha, he grew up on his family’s farm near Imogene, Iowa. After one year of college at Creighton University, he entered the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus in 1967. He re-ceived a bachelor’s de-gree in philosophy and a master’s degree in Unit-ed States history from

Saint Louis University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. Between 1975 and 1979, he studied theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, earning a master’s degree in divinity and a master’s degree in sacred theology while there. Ordained a priest in 1978, he completed doctoral studies in United States history at Stanford University in 1985.

Father Leahy joined the department of history at Marquette University in 1985 and became a tenured associate professor there six years later. In July 1991, he was named executive vice president at Marquette, where he served until being named president of Boston College in 1996.

During his years at Boston College, Father Leahy has presided over an institution that has solidified its position among the nation’s best and

most selective national universities. Since 1996, BC’s endowment, spon-sored research grants and student financial aid have doubled, and the percentage of student applicants accepted has fallen from 41 percent to 27 percent, while SAT scores have risen by more than 130 points. In ad-dition, 100 full-time faculty members have been added, minority student enrollment in undergraduate programs has climbed from 18 percent to 26 percent and annual cash gifts to the University have increased from $24 million to $95 million.

During his presidency, undergraduate applications to Boston College have grown from 16,500 to 30,000, making BC the fifth most- applied to private university in the United States. Currently, the University en-rolls students from all 50 states and 80 countries, and its undergradu-ates have earned more than 250 prestigious fellowships, including two Rhodes Scholarships. Student-athletes at BC succeed in balancing the demands of academics and athletics, and BC consistently ranks among those universities with the highest NCAA graduation rates.

Most recently, the Boston College community has been engaged in a comprehensive assessment and planning effort that resulted in a 10-year Strategic Plan. This plan will build on Boston College’s strengths and ac-complishments of the past and will focus additional resources on under-graduate liberal arts education and formation, as well as integrated science research and teaching. The University also intends to increasingly apply the strengths of its professional schools to resolving critical societal issues, and foster even more international links. In addition, Boston College in-tends to remain faithful to its Jesuit, Catholic heritage and to become the leading Catholic university and theological center in the world.

Director of athletics

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athlet-ics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most sig-nificant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College stu-dent-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the Univer-sity and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country. Last year, 379 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consis-tently ranked in the nation’s top ten. DeFilippo initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, includ-ing a new sound system, floor and video boards, new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facilities on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Sta-dium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months. DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renova-tion Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports.

DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contributed more than $27 million during the past year (this total includes an extraordinary payment towards a capital project). The 4,600 donors to the Flynn Fund prove that there is strength in numbers; nearly 700 alumni, parents and friends have given to BC Athletics for at least 10 consecutive years. Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their com-mitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has over-seen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2009-10 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 11th consecutive bowl game and the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament champion-ships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tour-nament as the overall No. 1 seed.

From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of athletics at Villanova University. He served as Associated Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Ser-vices at Vanderbilt University from 1983-84. His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference championships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters as a quarterback in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974. DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children – Christine Eldred (married to Matt Eldred), John and Mary.

A History

N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws.The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven mem-bers met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference.Suggestions from fans for the name of the new con-ference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names sug-gested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline.Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unani-mously. The meeting concluded with each mem-ber institution assessed $200.00 to pay for con-ference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the Uni-versity of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tevndered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964.The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Univer-sity. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting July 1, 2005.
