Tonight I am pleased to welcome Bruce Allen who will be outlining the joint International Project in India. Last week we had our first factory visit at The Australian Brewery at Rouse Hill. It was a casual evening and we all enjoyed the atmosphere, the food and the sampling of their house beers on offer to sample. PE Bobby Redman must have impressed the barman who on ordering the sampling selection as she was served with full size glasses of different beers and cider. Graeme Rohan ordered the same Beer Sampling Platter and only received sample glasses. We had a good roll up and after the meal we were given a special tour of the factory and a history of beer making and The Australian Brewery beer making processes. Coming up events are:
The Rotary Movie Evening at Event Cinemas at Castle Hill showing “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” on Thursday 23
rd February. Cost of the tickets is $20 and all
proceeds will go to End Polio. If you would like to attend there is still time to reserve tickets.
Next Monday 20th February is our Polio Awareness evening to be presented by our
own International Director and PE Bobby Redman. “End Polio” Pins will be available for sale. All proceeds go to End Polio.
Friday 24th February is the Charter Night for our District’s first E-Club at Moronic
Grove Receptions at Epping. Cost of the evening is $45. All 3 events will be worthwhile attending and if you are interested in attending please let me know ASAP. President Penny Hill

Factory Visit to the Australian Brewery 06 February 2012 Following a meal and a drink or two we were treated to a free guided tour of the brewery which was enjoyed by all. Our Guide, Tim, gave us detailed history of beer followed by an excellent presentation on brewing and an explanation on how the process works at Rouse Hill. The Australian brewery is classed as a micro brewery and is around one eighth of the size of the large commercial breweries. The process takes around three weeks and around half of the beer brewed is sent in kegs to other pubs. The standard of the beer is rated very highly and has won several awards at a national level, the current order book is full and expansions are being planned. After the tour we were invited to sample each of the beers and were given a run down of the characteristics of each type, needless to say by this time of the evening we all wished we had a designated driver so that we could do a better job of our tasting. We will be passing our thanks to the brewery for an excellent evening and in particular our guide Tim and the duty manager Ian for selling up the tour.
Dan Murphy BBQ 11 February 2012 PP Glen Wilcox along with Rtn Bruce Pike were rostered to man the weekly fund raising BBQ at the Dan Murphy Kellyville Ridge. PP Graeme Rohan and Rtn Michael Griscti were there with the supplies for the day. Both of them had a hope of delivering the trailer and the supplies and heading home for a relaxing Saturday morning. Little did they know they had a full morning workload waiting ahead of them? I had a sneak feeling that Graeme had come prepared for the day with his own supply of breakie and coffee for the team prepared by Edna. As Bruce had forgotten his day at the BBQ (a hefty fine awaits for him) with Glen, both Graeme and Michael stayed back to give a lending hand to Glen. The team had a good start with an order of 5 takeaway sausage rolls from the first client. American Tourist was surprised by Glen asking for a customary tip after serving the tourist with a delouses sausage roll. The morning hot cup of coffee was enjoyed by the team. By 1:30pm the team had sold out and packed up to enjoy the rest of the Saturday with family and friends.
Rotary Foundation Thought for the Week
This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is about a matching grant that has helped turn waste into profit for Philippine coconut farmers. With the aid of a Foundation matching grant, the Livelihood Project gives local farmers the supplies and labour to turn wasted coconut husks into "coconets", which have environmental and economic benefits for the community. The project
increased employment levels for women and out of school youth while reviving he local coconut industry. Coconut husks, which are a huge source of agricultural waste, are now used to make “coconets” which help provide an environmentally friendly solution to land erosion and degradation. Another husk by-product, coconut dust is used as a soil enhancer and organic fertilizer. This is an example of how The Rotary Foundation is helping smaller communities throughout the world and is ensuring that economic growth reaches the poorer communities.

Rotary Birthday Movie Fundraiser An important event coming up is the screening of the movie THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL with proceeds supporting Polio Eradication. Please support this event and encourage your members to bring along their friends and enjoy the movie and help raise funds for Polio Plus.
These will be conducted in Zones following February 23 which is the release date for the movie THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL which tells the story of a group of misfit British pensioners who are enticed to retire to a fabulous hotel in Jaipur, India, where they are promised to live a life of luxury for a bargain price. Upon their arrival, they are dismayed to find that restoration of the once elegant Marigold Hotel has stalled. There is water…sometimes. And electricity…sometimes. The hotel’s eager manager, a young Indian entrepreneur, is quick to tell them that his ambitious renovation is going to turn the place around. Surprisingly, the retirees find themselves settling into this strange new world and creating bonds with each other. What their new life lacks in luxury they come to find is plentiful in adventure, stunning beauty, peace and love.
Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDY89LYxK0w and you will see that this will be a fun event. It is coming to Castle Towers Event Cinema – date 23
rd February 7-30pm – cost $20, $10 of which will go
directly to Rotary Foundation towards Polio Plus.
Weekly Toast
This week we would like to toast the Rotary Club of Araponga in Brazil. The club was chartered on the 22
nd September 1951 and last
year celebrated their 60 years anniversary. Also at the end of last year their President, Carlos Romero Gerard introduced two new
Paul Harris Fellows.
RI President Kalyan Banerjee’s Corner
He shared this and other advice during the second plenary session on 16 January to help incoming district governors provide better support to Rotarians at the club level. “We’re here because we love Rotary,” he said. “We’re here because we love what we can do through Rotary, and we want to do more of it.” Banerjee explained that leadership in Rotary means giving support -- not giving orders. The “gold standard of great leadership,” he said, is “being the kind of leader about whom every Rotarian in your district says, ‘You know, if I am ever a district governor, I’d want to be a district governor just like him (or her).” Trustworthiness is also an important quality, Banerjee said. “A great leader is someone you can trust, not necessarily to have all the answers but to be able
to find them,” he explained. “And it’s someone who will listen, who will not dismiss your concerns, who will take the time to take you seriously.” Maintaining the right balance between work and fun is also vital to encouraging strong clubs, he said. “You do need the fun, of course -- that’s part of what makes Rotary what it is -- but fun is secondary and work is first,” Banerjee noted. “We all enjoy Rotary, but the primary thing, the point of why we’re here, it has to be the work, it has to be the service, it has to be the difference we are making.” Banerjee concluded that district governors must look beyond their year in office. He emphasized that serving the district isn’t about attaching their names to major accomplishments, but making changes in a short time that will make their district stronger.

Joke of the Day – Racism
Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream 'racism' these days. A customer asked, "In what aisle could I find the Guinness?" The shop assistant asks, "Are you Irish?" The guy, clearly offended, says, "Yes I am. But let me ask you something, If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian? Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German? Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish? Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican? Or if I asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?" The shop assistant says, "No, I probably wouldn't." The guy says, "Well then, because I asked for Guinness, why did you ask me if I'm Irish?" The clerk replied, "Because you're in Bunnings'."
