Introduction

TaaS Workshop 1 took place on November 7 as a CHAT 2013 event – a full day track at the Tekom 2013 conference in Wiesbaden. The aim of this workshop was to showcase the TaaS project, including the public presentation of the Beta TaaS platform, as well as to solicit new ideas. Together with web marketing campaigns, TaaS workshop was used to support the following project objectives:

• Generate on-going traffic to the TaaS platform - 100,000 TaaS visitors till May 2014 • Encourage registration - 1,200 TaaS registered users till May 2014.

Target Audience

Following target groups were presented at the CHAT event:

• Language workers (technical writers, terminologists, editors, language learners and others); • Providers and users of MT systems; • Professional translators and SMEs in translation and localization industry using computer-

assisted translation system users. • Developers of CAT tools for the language industry.

1. TaaS Workshop 1: Promotional Dissemination (M12-M18)

1.1. Online Campaigns From April 2013 we actively promoted CHAT and CHAT related activities on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Google + and various Linkedin groups, as well as on terminology portals such as scoop.it, Terminology coordination (See Appendix 1: Interview with Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dirk Schimtz) and Researchgate. These are the examples of the groups we have used on Linkedin (data from November 20, 2013) Terminology (3,309 members); Terminology Services (619 members); Translation & Localization Professionals Worldwide (11,540 members); Translation Automation (3,230 members) All the consortium members were encouraged to use their communication channels to stimulate the peer participation at this TaaS event.

Specially for this event on Twitter and Google+ we have introduced dedicated hashtags - #CHAT2013/#CHAT13.

1.2. TaaS E-bulletin TaaS e-bulletin announcing the CHAT 2013 was sent in August 2013 to more than 180 industry representatives who previously expressed their interest in the terminology related news.

1.3. Website CHAT dedicated sections were created on the TaaS website to reflect the event related news and the program. From April 2013 till November 7, 2013 the CHAT webpages attracted more than 1,700 visitors. Figure 3. CHAT dedicated webpage on the TaaS project website

1.4. Collaterals Prior to the TaaS Workshop we designed the CHAT logo, a banner (Figure 6) and a poster that were used to promote the event in online communications.

TaaS banner was used the CHAT event to inform the participants about the TaaS platform and encourage the demo trial. During the Tekom conference printed versions of the CHAT program were circulated among the attendees to create better awareness of the track.

2. TaaS Workshop 1: Dissemination Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dirk Schimtz (University of Cologne) and Tatiana Gornostay (Tilde) hosted the CHAT event. We had strong program of six presentation slots. These are the numbers of attendees within each presentation slot.

3. TaaS Workshop 1: Follow up Activities TaaS Workshop presentations are published and publicly available on the TaaS website.

3.1. TaaS E-bulletin After the workshop we have sent the second TaaS e-bulletin, with the news lines about the CHAT event and the launch of the TaaS platform. This bulletin was sent to more than 1,700 translators and technical writers from the TAUS database, as well as to the CHAT attendees who showed their interest in follow up activities. On behalf of TaaS TAUS also published and promoted a press release announcing the launch of the TaaS platform presented at the CHAT event (see Appendix 2).

CHAT  2013  Creation,  Harmonization  and  Application  of  Terminology  

Resources  

A sub-track of the “Terminology and Language Technology” expert forum of the conference TC World 2013 and Tekom Fair 2013 – the largest global event and market place for technical communication

Call  for  Proposals  Submission deadline May 24, 2013

With the evolution of the Internet and cloud computing, there has been a shift to collaborative solutions with a focus on user/consumer-orientation, consistency, interoperability and sharing in information management and professional communication communities. Effective processing and use of terminology is a backbone behind robust processes within the content/document life cycle from creation, translation, localization, publication and numerous other information management steps to ensure efficient and precise communication. CHAT 2013 will bring together academia and business stakeholders in terminology to discuss the latest advances and challenges in the field. We welcome researchers, software and service companies, as well as users to share their experiences with the creation, harmonization and practical application of terminology in the technical documentation life cycle and other areas of the content value chain, including translation and localization workflows. We call for appealing and real world application-oriented proposals to make CHAT 2013 an impactful and inspiring event to open new frontiers in the creation, harmonization and application of terminology resources. CHAT 2013 is organised by the consortium “TaaS: Terminology as a Service” (a co-organiser of CHAT 2012) to continue a series of meetings that started as the first CHAT 2011 in Riga. The consortium includes Tilde, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Kilgray, University of Sheffield and TAUS. CHAT 2013 is planned as a full day track of the tcworld/tekom 2013 conference.

TOPICS  CHAT 2013 is held under the main conference expert forum “Terminology and Language Technology”. We invite proposals on the following topics: • Automated approaches to terminology extraction and creation of terminology resources • Consistency of corporate and industry multilingual terminology • Interoperability and harmonization of terminology resources • Online terminology resources: development, administration, integration • Collaborative terminology management and sharing • Terminology resources in language technology applications

SUBMISSIONS  

Proposals must include the following information:

• Title of your proposal (max. 100 characters including spaces)

• Summary of your proposal for the conference programme (max. 600 characters; we reserve the right to revise the text)

• Keyword oriented outline of your proposal to provide us with the information about your contribution to the conference programme, and the outline will not be published; we will use the outline to evaluate and accept/reject your suggested topic (max. 2000 characters with spaces):

What is the structure of your proposal? Which topics and subtopics will you concentrate on? Information about the speaker(s):

• Title • First name, Last name • E-mail • Company/Institute, Department • Department • Country, Address, Zip, City • Telephone • Short CV (max. 300 characters including spaces) • Additional information, for example, technical requirements required in the conference

room. Important! Maximum two speakers are possible per one presentation. Please provide information about each speaker and indicate the main speaker. Proposals must be submitted in PDF through the CHAT 2013 EasyChair website. Proposals must be submitted no later than May 24, 2013. Proposals submitted after the deadline will not be reviewed. Full papers for the accepted proposals must conform to the formatting requirements of the style sheet of conference proceedings and must be submitted through the main conference tool no later than June 21, 2013. CHAT 2013 presentations will be announced in the tcworld/tekom 2013 main conference programme.

REVIEWING  The Programme Committee with the support of the tcworld/tekom Advisory Board will review the submissions.

LANGUAGE  The language for CHAT 2013 presentations and publications is English.

PARTICIPATION  AND  REGISTRATION  Important! CHAT 2013 speakers, who have submitted their full papers for the accepted proposals through the tcworld/tekom conference tool, automatically get the registration and free access to the whole event (CHAT, all tracks of the main conference and the exhibition) and do not have to pay any fee. If there are two speakers for one proposal (a co-author of the full paper), the first speaker automatically gets the registration and free access to the whole event, and the second speaker gets the registration and free access to the day of the presentation (CHAT, all tracks of the main conference and the exhibition). CHAT 2013 is also open to the registered participants of the main conference. All other participants of CHAT 2013 have to pay the normal conference fee.

PROGRAMME  COMMITTEE  The TaaS project consortium

ORGANISERS  CHAT 2013 is organised by the consortium “TaaS: Terminology as a Service” to continue a series of meetings that started as the first CHAT 2011 in Riga and CHAT 2012 in Madrid. The consortium includes Tilde, TAUS, Kilgray, Cologne University of Applied Sciences and University of Sheffield. The organisers express their gratitude to the tcworld/tekom conference Advisory Board for their support in the organisation of CHAT 2013.

Previous  CHAT  events  

CHAT 2011 The first CHAT event was held in conjunction with the conference NODALIDA 2011 - the 18th Nordic Conference on Computational Linguistics on May 11, 2011, in Riga, Latvia. A short summary of the event.

CHAT 2012 The second CHAT event was co-located with the conference TKE 2012 - Terminology and Knowledge Engineering on June 22, 2012, in Madrid, Spain. A short summary of the event.
