Game 1 - Missouri State at Arkansas State - November 11, 2013 2

Series HistoryMissouri State holds a 10-7 series lead over Arkansas State and is facing ASU for a ninth consecutive season. The Lady Bears are 4-5 against the Red Wolves in Jonesboro and have won five straight in the series, including an 83-60 home victory last year. Missouri State won the last two match-ups in Jonesboro, 77-68 in 2011 and 73-65in 2009.

Scouting Arkansas StateArkansas State returns two starters and eight letterwinners from last season’s club that went 15-15 overall and 12-8 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves are picked to finish third in the 10-team league this season with senior forward Jane Morrill hauling in preseason all-conference honors after scoring 15.2 points and grabbing 5.4 rebounds last year. ASU beat Harding (79-68) and Arkansas-Monticello (79-48) in its exhibition con-tests. Scouting the Lady BearsMissouri State returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last season’s team, while six players remain from the 2011-12 club that won the MVC regular-season championship and advanced to the third round of the WNIT. The bulk of MSU’s experience resides amongst the guards, including seniors Karly Buer, Desiree Phillips and Hannah Wilkerson. Buer is on pace to become the 24th 1,000-point scorer in school history and set the single-season record last year by making 90.7 of her free throw attempts. Wilkerson averaged 6.9 points per game as a junior and made 22 starts, while Phillips led the Lady Bears in 3-point accuracy at 34 percent. Sophomores Kenzie Williams and Tyonna Snow combined for nearly 20 points per game and 129 total steals last season. At the post, senior Bry Snow has the most experience and averaged 5.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in roughly 15 minutes per game last year. Junior NiJay Gaines earned playing time as last season progressed as she transition to the forward spot, while sophomores Hillary Chvatal and Mikala McGhee look for their roles to expand this year as well. Freshmen Lexi Hughes, Katie Palmer, Onye Osemenam and Rachel Swartz all made contributions during the exhibition season.

for the legendary Pat Summitt and earned honorable mention all-America honors as a senior in 1999.

2012-13 In ReviewMissouri State went 14-17 overall last season and finished eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 6-12 mark. The Lady Bears got off to a 5-2 start with two very competitive losses against NCAA Tournament-bound Oklahoma State and Gonzaga, and completed the non-conference schedule at 8-4 before struggling in MVC play. Senior Christiana Shorter ended her career on numerous top 10 lists in the MSU re-cord books, and classmate Whitney Edie was an honorable-mention all-league choice after leading the Lady Bears in scoring and rebounding. Freshmen Kenzie Williams and Tyonna Snow performed at a high level all season, combining for 20 points and nine rebounds per game to go with 129 total steals, proving the future is bright for the Lady Bears.

High Scoring StaffThe 2013-14 Lady Bear coaching staff combined to score 5,087 points at the Division I level during their playing careers with four All-America seasons, four Final Four appear-ances and three national championships. Head Coach Kellie (Jolly) Harper won three national titles at Tennessee under the legendary Pat Summitt, including a 39-0 junior season in 1998. The point guard scored 894 points and dished out 452 assists. The NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, assistant Jackie Stiles poured in 3,393 points for Missouri State from 1997-2001. The three-time All-American and 2001 National Player of the Year led the Lady Bears to their second Final Four that season. Assistant Jennifer Sullivan enjoyed a standout career at Memphis, piling up 800 points, 310 rebounds and 99 steals as a three-year starter for the Tigers.

MSU Peaks in The ValleyThe Lady Bears are 254-120 all-time in MVC play with a 150-38 home record against league foes. Missouri State has won at least a share of 13 regular-season titles and nine conference tournaments since the 1989-90 season. MSU has played in 11 of the 21 Val-ley tournament championship games and 13 of the 27 title games since the inception of the Gateway Conference Tournament in 1983.

Missouri State All-TimeMissouri State is in its 45th season of women’s collegiate basketball and has an all-time record of 758-523 (.592). MSU began formal competition in 1969 and, with a 24-9 mark in 2012, secured its 29th winning season. The Lady Bears have made 13 NCAA Tourna-ment appearances, highlighted by Final Four trips in 1992 and 2001 to go along with a Sweet 16 appearance in 1993. The Lady Bears are in their 32nd NCAA Division I season and 22nd MVC year. MSU was in AIAW competition on the state, regional and national levels through the 1981-82 season, moved to Division I and Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference play in 1982-83 and started MVC competition in 1992-93 when the Gateway merged with The Valley.

“Q” RatingAfter compiling a 325-108 record in Hammons Student Center over its 32-year stint as home of Missouri State basketball, the Lady Bears posted a 9-5 at home last season to run their five-year record to 55-24 in JQH Arena. The “Q” is the fourth regular home of Missouri State women’s basketball in the four-decade history of the program. The Lady Bears utilized both McDonald Arena and the Greenwood Laboratory School gym from 1969 until Hammons Student Center opened in 1976. MSU continued to play some of its home games at McDonald through the 1979-80 season. The Lady Bears’ new home was made possible by a $30 million gift from MSU alum-nus John Q. Hammons and features seating for more than 11,000 fans, 24 suites, the PRIME Overtime Club and the Missouri State University Hall of Fame and Legacy of Competition.

FandemoniumWith the conclusion of their fifth season in JQH Arena, the Lady Bears returned to the top of the MVC standings in terms of attendance, drawing 36,479 fans in 14 home dates in 2012-13 for a 2,606 average. MSU has now led the MVC in attendance 22 times in
