Our GrOwinG COmmunity Center

Thank you for your interest in joining us at the Manhattan Youth Downtown Community Center. Each year we get closer to our goal of providing Lower Manhattan with physically energizing, culturally stimulating, community-building, and thought-provoking activities in a comfortable community setting. After the devastation caused to our Center by Hurricane Sandy, we are extremely happy to open up our new completely redesigned Arts, Culture, Science and Technology Level. The floor houses our arts and ceramics, music, digital media production, lounge, and culinary arts spaces. In addition to our new spaces here at the Center, we are pleased to announce a partnership with Whole Foods Market™ Tribeca, where we offer classes and programs for families seven days a week. We hope you will use and enjoy all that the Center has to offer, and thank you for helping us make this a happy place.

Alex RocheDowntown Community Center Director

we Care

Each year, we provide nearly $300,000 in tuition assistance for families with demonstrated financial need, so they can enroll their children in one of our eight Manhattan Youth After-School Programs. We care for all of our families with low rates - five days per week of after-school in the elementary grades costs only about $6 per hour. We care by providing all of our kids with over 400 exciting, engaging after-school activities across all of our schools each week.

We care with $120,000 in tuition assistance for our summertime Downtown Day Camps. We care by providing our after-school program at I.S. 289 – which costs about $200,000 – for free. We care with nearly $20,000 in assistance for our other fee-based recreation programs. We care for our seniors with Senior Swim five days per week, for our teens and tweens with an expanding menu of programs and with free programs for everyone at a cost to us of nearly $300,000. All told, we care with nearly $900,000 of assistance and free programs each year.

AqUATICS

Our Manhattan Youth Downtown Community Center offers aquatics programs for all ages and abilities. Our full 25-yard, 4-lane pool is kept at a warm 86-88 degrees, creating an inviting environment for our swimming lessons and Family Swim.

Bubble Babies6 mo. - 2 yr. with parent/guardian

This drop-in class helps new swimmers become comfortable in and around the water. Songs and games introduce beginner swim skills (such as kicking, splashing, and blowing bubbles) and create a fun, positive experience for young children in the pool. Bubble Babies classes are drop-in and included in membership to the Center.

Begin2Swim2 - 3 yr. with parent/guardian

These beginner swim lessons offer more personal instruction and a progressive curriculum for children who are ready to take the plunge! Along with increased comfort in the water, children learn safety skills, breath control, proper body position, and basic arm and leg movements. Through a more structured class setting, swimmers begin to independently follow the lead of the instructor. After completion of the Begin2Swim program, swimmers may be ready to move up to the first level of our Pre-K Swim Lessons.

Pre K/Youth Swim Lessons3 - 5 yr./K - 5th grade

Our small-group lessons promote safety, fun, and friendship. We love incorporating a social aspect into swimming, an activity that is often thought of as an individual sport. The result is an environment where children encourage, support, and learn from one another - and simply have a blast swimming!

Middle and High School Programs6th grade and up

Our Middle and High School swim programs are geared specifically towards our adolescent swimmers. Whether new to swimming or an accomplished team swimmer, we offer a class or program for everyone!

After-School Swim LessonsK - 8th grade

We are proud to additionally offer our Youth Swim Lessons through our After-School programs at P.S. 89, P.S. 343, P.S. 234, P.S. 150, P.S. 276, P.S. 397 and I.S. 289. Please visit www.manhattanyouth.org for more information.

swim lessOns at the Center:

At the Manhattan Youth Swim School our goal is for your child to have a positive, successful swimming experience. Our certified teachers come from a variety of backgrounds and have years of experience teaching swimming - each of them contributing to our program in their own special way. We follow a curriculum developed over Manhattan Youth's 20+ years of successfully teaching children to swim in lower Manhattan, however we pride ourselves on having unique instructors, each with different personalities, teaching styles, and creative ideas. We understand that children learn in different ways and respond to different styles of instruction, and our diverse team of instructors allows us to find that perfect fit for each child.

Tritons Swim Team2nd - 8th grade

Our Center is proud to have our very own swim team! Practices are held multiple times per week, allowing swimmers to increase endurance, improve fitness and self-confidence, refine their stroke technique, and learn competitive skills and sportsmanship. Our coaching philosophy emphasizes our belief in self-competition and setting personal goals. The team's home and competition site is the Downtown Community Center Pool. Please note that swimmers must demonstrate specific skill requirements to enroll.

Family SwimIn addition to our swim lesson programs, we offer Family Swim sessions every day of the week as part of our Family Membership. Adult Lap SwimDuring designated Lap Swim hours, 2-4 lanes are reserved for Adult Lap Swimming. Please note: we do not guarantee lap lanes during Family Swim hours.

Adult Swim ClassesWe offer beginner, intermediate and advanced swim classes for our adult members. For detailed class descriptions refer to the adult/senior section of this catalog on page 20.

AquaJogThis low-impact adult water aerobics class is a fun, energetic addition to both our Adult Fitness and Aquatics programs. Swimmers are led by an instructor through a series of deep-water exercises with the support of a flotation belt.

Senior Open Swim and Water AerobicsTo promote continuing active lifestyles, Manhattan Youth offers a Senior Swim program for ages 65+. Seniors may enjoy Open Swim and Lap Swim 5 days per week, in addition to weekly Senior Water Aerobics classes and monthly Senior Swim Lesson Clinics.

Songs for SeedsNamed "Best Music Class 2010” by New York Magazine, Songs For Seeds is a rockin' music program that encourages children, newborn to 5 years, to sing, dance and play along with a live, three-piece band. Kids rock out with children's instruments, as well as real drums, guitars, keyboards and instruments from around the world. Using original tunes written by well-known musician Mr. Ray, Songs For Seeds provides a fun, stimulating, interactive experience. We "travel" to a new country every week, create well-known nursery rhymes through visual art, perform magic tricks to highlight numbers and counting, and spin the animal wheel to reinforce animal names and sounds. By mixing our original kids rock 'n' roll songs with adult contemporary music, the band is sure to please little ones and their adults. Registration required.

Visual arts

Portfolio – Fine ArtThroughout the year, students will develop a diverse body of work, including drawing, painting, print-making, collage and sculpture, adhering to the 5th grade benchmark laid out in the NYC DOE Blueprint for the Visual Arts. With guidance from their instructor, students will create and assemble an impressive portfolio of artwork with which they can apply to schools specializing in art throughout the city.

Fashion Art & Illustration Students will sketch fashion figures, design fabrics, and create full lines of clothing, producing their own style books.

Printing, Pressing, Stamping and More!Printing presses, found objects, fruits and vegetables, wood blocks, wax resist… the list goes on! Children will create 2D and 3D works of art that will incorporate printmaking techniques.

Silk Screen & Printing Learn the basics of silk screening and other ink printing techniques for fabric and other permeable materials. This creative opportunity to design and produce is an inspiring art form.

Fiber Arts I & IILevel I (2nd and 3rd grades) Students learn the basic principles of sewing (threading needles, tying knots, cutting fabric) by designing and constructing hand-sewn items such as pillows, scarves, bags and stuffed animals.

Level II (4th and 5th grades) This advanced class builds on hand-sewing skills and also introduces students to using sewing machines. With both skills (hand and machine sewing), students will design more intricate pieces such as shirts, dresses and purses.

WoodcarvingIn this hands-on workshop, students learn to examine and explore individual blocks of wood to find patterns, shapes and designs hidden in the grain. Using hand tools, they carve their pieces into beautifully finished sculptures.

CeramicsStudents discover all levels of hand–building, glaze techniques and firing methods. Projects include teapots, lidded vessels, self-portraits, mugs, dishes, vases, masks and more! With plenty of free exploration time, students work closely with our staff of professional artists and receive lots of personal attention. In 4th and 5th grades the pottery wheel is introduced, bringing their skills to a whole new level. All materials are non-toxic and food safe.

Manhattan Youth provides childcare and enrichment programming onsite at the Center. The program is available as early as 3:00 pm, and runs until 5:50 pm every day that public schools are in session.
