Get Ready for a Virtual ReunionLike None Other…Middletown Area Alumni Association Online Community!http://www.graduateconnections.com/mahs

Just a Heads Up…The Alumni Association wants to remind former Middletown students that

the Website www.alumniclass.com/middletownareahs is not a!liated with the Middletown Area Alumni Association. Any money paid online does not count toward your MAHS Alumni Association membership; it is merely a payment for subscription to the site. We do see the site’s value to our community but wanted to clarify this as we’ve had several members ask. The School District has unveiled a new and improved Website and has given the Alumni Association its own area online. Look for the direct link on www.raiderweb.org and check out our group page on Facebook!

Please check here if this is a change of address. Also, please notify the Alumni of any address changes that occur throughout the year.2013 Annual Membership $5.00 ____________________Single Lifetime Membership $50.00 ____________________Couple Lifetime Membership $90.00 ____________________Donation to General Fund ____________________Award Fund Donation ____________________Century Club $100.00 ____________________Dinner/Dance $20.00 ____________________Dance Only $5.00 ____________________Football Game $5.50 ____________________Blue Raider Lane Street Sign $20.00 ____________________Homecoming Tailgate - Alumni member ($0) ____________________ (Number of RSVPs)Homecoming Tailgate - Non-member ($5/person) $5.00 ____________________ (Number of RSVPs)Total Amount Enclosed $ ___________________

This year, with the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Homecoming, the O!cers and Board of Direc-tors of the Middletown Area High School Alumni Association thought it would be "tting to honor all our past Homecoming Parade Grand Marshals.

Although many of our past Grand Marshals are no longer with us, we would like to honor their memory as we celebrate this special day. We would also like to honor those who are still with us, for their continued support of our schools and our annual Homecoming celebrations, by having them featured together in this year’s parade.

Generally, with a few exceptions, the Grand Marshal has been a graduate of Middletown Area High School. Candidates are chosen for their contributions to the Middletown schools and to the Middletown community. Among our past Grand Marshals, there have been teachers, professors, coaches, doctors, lawyers, o!cers and board members of the Alumni Association and others who have given unsel"shly of their time and tal-ents to help our youth and the people of Middletown.

The 2012 Homecoming was held on October 13, 2012. We honored the class of 1962 as our 50-year honor class. They had a great turnout for Homecoming, their reunion and they marched in our annual parade! The 2012 Grand Marshal was Mr. Charles Selcher who also has the distinction of being our oldest living alumnus! Congratulations, Mr. Selcher!

We crowned Ms. Cassie Bechtel as our 2012 Home-coming Queen. The Blue Raiders came up short with a score of 27 to 7 versus a tough Steelton-Highspire Rollers football team.

The wonderful day was capped o! with our annual Alumni dinner at the Middletown Area High School followed by a short program, business meeting, and entertainment by various students and alumni from the Middletown Area School District!

50th  AnniversarHonor Class of 1963

“Now that we have reached the door, it is up to us to open it” was the motto of the last class to graduate from the old Water Street Middletown High School in 1963. Class members were proud to be recognized as the last class to haunt those hallowed halls. We thought we were lucky to have half-day school days our four years of high school. However, the half-days gave us less time to socialize and to know our classmates. Despite half-days, we managed to enjoy our senior year.

We elected James Hurst, president, and Ann Fulginiti, prom queen, and were mentored by our advisors, Ms. Ruth Graham and Mr. Russell Trimmer.

The senior class play, “A Broom for the Bride,” set a record by running the longest of any senior play in the history of MAHS. The class historian wrote in the senior history: “It was as though we were in the Twilight Zone and had gone back in time because makeup was being applied with the aid of lanterns and $ashlights. The show could not go on because the $ames that destroyed the (Middletown) Dress Factory” caused the loss of electricity. The play continued the following week.

The Kinsey legacy came to a close with the graduation of Robert Kinsey, the youngest of the four boys. Bob was co-captain of the football squad, which "nished second in conference play, as well as co-captain of the basketball team in his senior year. After graduating from Gettysburg College, Bob returned to Middletown High to teach for 35 years and coach football for 10 of those years.

We remember telephone party lines, manual typewriters, doo wop, board games, and our class trip to Hershey Park, wiener roasts, the “mirror ball” at the MCSO dances, hayrides, slumber parties, 7 am school, and Mr. Brunner.

On August 24, 2013, the class of 1963 held their 50th year class reunion at the Best Western Premier Hotel, Har-risburg. Class members renewed old friendships, swapped stories about ailments, and shared experiences about the many doors they have opened these past 50 years. Class members are looking forward to participating in the 2013 Homecoming activities as the “honored” class.

August 2013Dear Alumni,Welcome to the 2013-14 school year. This new academic year will open with several “new” faces in our midst, but they are

certainly not strangers to Middletown Area School District. I am pleased to announce that two of your fellow alumni will be lead-ing the Middletown Area High School this year. Michael Carnes, Class of 1992, is the new principal of the High School. Brett Myers, Class of 1993, is the new Dean of Students of the High School and will also be leading our Varsity Football team as Head Coach. Another addition to our High School administrative team is Jeremy King, our new Athletic Director/Assistant Principal. Jeremy hails from the Lancaster County area and has an impressive background as an athletic competitor, coach, and teacher. This dynamic new leadership team will be instrumental in restoring the pride and discipline to Middletown Area High School that has been a trade-mark of our legacy. We are very excited to have these three "ne gentlemen in positions to make a positive impact on our students.

Alumni also play a special role in the legacy of a school system. If you haven’t visited your alma mater recently, this would be a great year to come home to Middletown. 2013 is the 50th anniversary of Homecoming and will be celebrated in grand style on the weekend of October 18–19, 2013. Look for more details about homecoming events in this newsletter.

You may have read in the local newspapers that we are in the design phase of a high school construction project. Our present building is 50 years old and the cost to renovate is more expensive than new construction. Although no de"nite date has been de-termined to begin construction, the Board and Administration has been actively engaged in the planning process throughout the 2012-13 school year due to a moratorium the Commonwealth placed on school districts’ ability to seek reimbursement for school construction projects unless project plans were initiated before October 2012. In the coming years, the alumni association will be working with the administration to help bridge the current high school with the future high school building. It is important that all of the memorabilia that has had its home at Middletown Area High School and the Life Fitness Center "nd a new home in our future school facilities. We are seeking volunteers to serve on a committee to work on this bridging project. Please contact Alumni Association President, Earl Bright, if you are interested in helping with this idea.

The District continues to be interested in hearing from any alumni who are willing to share news or professional accomplish-ments with us. We are Blue Raider proud of our alumni and would like to communicate your stories to other alumni, parents, and students. If you are interested in sharing your news, please contact Jodie Zorbaugh, Communications Specialist, at [email protected].

I look forward to seeing you at Homecoming this fall.` Sincerely, Lori A. Suski, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools
