PROCESSIONAL WELCOME Marcia Mardis, Associate Professor, Mistress of Ceremonies KEYNOTE Introduction by Dr. Kathleen Burnett, Interim Director, School of Library & Information Studies “Benevolence, Beauty, and Boldness: Perspectives on a Profession” Ann ornton, Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries Ms. Ann ornton is the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries, the largest library system in the world. She is responsible for four world-renowned research libraries and their many activities, including collection development, preservation, reference and research services, education, fellowships, programs, and exhibitions. Ms. ornton has a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.L.I.S. from Florida State University. PRESENTATION OF AWARDS DISTINGUISHED A LUMNI Dr. Vicki Freimuth, School of Communication Video Presentation by David Garfinkle and Jay Renfroe, 2012 Distinguished Alumni and Renegade 83 Dr. Vicki Freimuth is Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia where she also held a joint appointment in the Department of Speech Communication and the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Before joining the faculty at the University of Georgia, she served as Director of Communication at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1996-2003. Dr. Freimuth received her B.S. from Eastern Illinois University, her Master’s from the University of Iowa, and her Ph.D. from the Department of Communication at Florida State University in 1974. Dr. Virginia Gilmore Walker, School of Communication Science & Disorders Presented by Dr. Leonard LaPointe, Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor Dr. Virginia Gilmore Walker was a Professor with the FSU Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders from 1979-2004. While working towards her doctoral degree, she held various part-time teaching and clinical positions in the Department of Communication Science & Disorders. Dr. Walker received her B.A. from Longwood College in 1964, her M.Ed. from the University of Virginia and her Ph.D. from Florida State University. 2013 Annual Convocation & Award Ceremony Ann Thornton, School of Library & Information Studies Presented by Dr. Kathleen Burnett, Interim Director Ms. Ann ornton began working in the New York Public Library in 1996 when she was hired as the Science, Industry, and Business Library’s first pubic training coordinator. She is a board member of the Metropolitan New York Library Council and serves on the New York State Education Department’s Board of Regents Advisory Council on Libraries. Ms. ornton subsequently held the positions of Assistant Director of Electronic Resources, Associate Director, Humanities and Social Sciences Library, Director of Reference and Research Services, and Acting Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries. OUTSTANDING F ACULTY AND S TAFF S CHOOL OF COMMUNICATION Presented by Dr. Ulla Sypher, Interim Director Mark Zeigler, Research Associate and Instructor Mr. Mark Zeigler has been working with the Florida State University School of Communication since 1993. He has served in a variety of roles, including the Dean’s Office, Interim Director of the FSU London Program, and Faculty Member. His teaching has been recognized by three undergraduate teaching awards and he was selected as the University’s Distinguished Teacher in 2009. Mr. Zeigler serves as the School’s liaison to the Honors Program. Mary J. Ealey, Academic Coordinator Ms. Mary J. Ealey began working at Florida State University in 1993 as a Program Assistant for the College of Education. She transferred to the School of Communication in 1997, where she is currently serving as Academic Program Assistant with focus on the undergraduate program. Ms. Ealey has been the School of Communication’s Academic Coordinator for the past 16 years, working closely with the director, faculty and students on department-wide support such as course scheduling, drop/add, and textbooks. SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION SCIENCE & DISORDERS Presented by Dr. Leonard LaPointe, Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor Dr. Richard Morris, Professor Dr. Richard Morris is a Professor in the FSU School of Communication Science & Disorders whose academic interests are the acoustics of singing, acoustic phonetics, and laryngeal biomechanics. He is also the Director of the Summer Special Program in Communication Disorders in London at the FSU London Centre. When not doing research or teaching, Dr. Morris enjoys biking, swimming, and running; watching movies, preparing meals, and traveling with his wife, Jamie; as well as Torah and Talmud study. Lisa M. Jackson, Grants Compliance Associate Lisa M. Jackson is a Tallahassee native and graduate of Florida State University High School. She is a Grants Compliance Associate for the FSU School of Communication Science and Disorders. Ms. Jackson has worked for FSU for 25 years with a tremendous amount of dedication, pride and commitment.

School of liBrarY & information StuDieS • Presented by Dr. Kathleen BurnettDr. Don Latham, Associate ProfessorDr. Don Latham is an Associate Professor in the Florida State University School of Library & Information Studies. He received his M.S. and Specialist degrees at FSU SLIS and his Ph.D. in English from the University of Georgia. A native South Carolinean, Dr. Latham has lived in Tallahassee since 1996.

Shonda Sampson, Finance Administrator

Ms. Shonda Sampson loves her native Tallahassee. In almost 13 years at FSU she has served at the Cashiers Offi ce, the Controller’s Offi ce and at SLIS (nine years). She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology from FSU in 2001.

DeAn’s OFFice AWARD, cci • Presented by Dean Dr. Lawrence C. DennisSandy Beard, Staff Services Specialist

Ms. Sandy Beard began her career at Florida State University in 1985. In almost 29 years at FSU she has served at the FSU Key Bank, Management Data, Leach Center, Th eatre, and has spent nine years working at CCI. Ms. Beard enjoys living in the country, watching the wildlife, and reading.

cci leADeRshiP BOARD AWARDs • Presented by Helena Sims, Board ChairDr. Jennifer Proffi tt, Associate Professor

Dr. Jennifer Proffi tt is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication. Her teaching and research interests include the political economy of media, communication regulation and policy, and media ethics. Dr. Proffi tt is the president of the United Faculty of Florida-Florida State University chapter and an active member in the Union for Democratic Communications.

Dr. Michelle Kazmer, Associate Professor

Dr. Michelle Kazmer is an Associate Professor in the FSU School of Library & Information Studies (SLIS) where she has been on the faculty since 2002. She is Program Chair of the Master of Science and Master of Arts in Library & Information Studies degrees at SLIS. Dr. Kazmer has a background in mechanical engineering and rare book cataloging.

Dr. Julie Stierwalt, Associate Professor

Dr. Julie Stierwalt teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in both the campus and distance learning curriculums. She mentors students at all levels from the undergraduate to doctoral levels in research endeavors. Dr. Stierwalt has served on the National Students for Speech, Language, & Hearing Association since 2005, currently serving as the Editor of the journal Contemporary Issues in Communication Science and Disorders.
