GHIN Handicapping Club licensing has become an
integral part of the handicap system All clubs in Maine need recertification
for the 2012-2016 cycle On-line seminars are available for
anyone interested in becoming licensed and we will be hosting at least one seminar this fall – watch the web site for more information!
Everyone at the MSGA can answer most GHIN questions – and if they don’t have the answer, they’ll forward you to someone who does! From the USGA’s web
site at www.usga.org
![Page 11: 2013 annual meeting dinner presentation updated](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052617/5415561e8d7f72356c8b462f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
GHIN Handicapping In accordance with the Rules
of Handicapping, the MSGA has developed its own review process for all players competing in MSGA events. We have developed a system whereby players who meet the following criteria will be automatically reviewed :
![Page 12: 2013 annual meeting dinner presentation updated](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052617/5415561e8d7f72356c8b462f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
GHIN HandicappingReview Criteria: Score a net differential of three shots or
more under the Course Rating for any given MSGA tournament;
Play to their handicap or better (equal or less than the course rating) in 25 percent or more of MSGA events; and/or
Play well enough to consistently place in the gross or net prize money in any individual flight, with “consistently” being defined as 25 percent or more of the time.

Course Ratings All golf courses are NOT
created equal Course ratings allow a
handicap INDEX to be converted to a COURSE handicap
Rating all the different tees allows for such initiatives as TEE IT FORWARD
![Page 35: 2013 annual meeting dinner presentation updated](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052617/5415561e8d7f72356c8b462f/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Course Ratings Course must be rerated
every 10 years or every five years for first 10 years
Rating teams are made of volunteers who must attend USGA course rating seminar
Ratings are objective process set forth by USGA guidelines, but still primarily based upon length
![Page 36: 2013 annual meeting dinner presentation updated](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052617/5415561e8d7f72356c8b462f/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Understanding Course Ratings Every golf course has both a COURSE
and a SLOPE rating Course rating is the difficulty of the golf
course for the scratch golfer Slope rating is the difficulty of the golf
course for the BOGEY golfer as compared to the SCRATCH golfer
Every set of tees at every golf course has a TARGET score, which is the COURSE RATING plus your COURSE HANDICAP
Target scores are used in determining handicap adjustments for different tees
