The “Person Centred” focus is now well embedded in Sunnyhaven. All staff has continued to improve their skills in this delivery of service to our clients. “Disability Care” which is being trailed in the Hunter Area of NSW will bring new challenges to Sunnyhaven in its delivery of services to our clients and carers, families, staff and The Board Members. The implementation in our region will not commence till 2016. Meanwhile we will continue to improve what we do so that we are ready to offer our services to all who will be looking for quality and diversity in our sector. We look forward to the new Chief Executive Officer to lead us through these challenges and prepare us over the next few years. I thank the office staff for holding the fort in such a capable way since Senaka’s resignation.

The Board of Sunnyhaven is proudly committed to ongoing service enhancement that enables our residents and clients to enjoy life and maximise life’s opportunities. The board is also committed to the steady, sustainable expansion of innovative services that’s will support the objectives of the organisation in the years to come.

On behalf of the board I wish to acknowledge the great care and professionalism of our staff and management teams who engage in their work with dedication and compassion. Thanks to effective team work at every level of the organisation Sunnyhaven has achieved operational efficiency and effectiveness which has resulted in great positive outcomes for the clients we support.

It is with great pleasure that I present to you our 2013 Annual Report.

The past year has been another challenging and rewarding year for all at Sunnyhaven Ltd. Sunnyhaven continued to have significant success in achieving the goals and objectives of the organisation.

We are proud to report that during the 2013 financial year, Sunnyhaven Ltd performed extremely well. By implementing good financial practices, we managed the available resources effectively and efficiently.

Our Financial position is strong, with net Assets of almost $7.7M as at 31 June 2013. The Financial strength allows us to partner with our funding bodies in the quest to provide the very best residential, respite, training, Community Participation and Community Access needs for people with disabilities.

We are proud to say that Sunnyhaven Ltd’s management has been more accountable for people with disabilities, families, staff and the funding body financial management has been successfully managed against the budget. I am reassured that we definitely have the resources to cover any contingencies that may arise.

The company met all of its obligations with respect to

property maintenance, vehicle fleet upkeep, financial compliance, the maintenance and integrity of financial records.

Sunnyhaven Ltd has implemented one of the best accounting software applications (SAP) to do full cost centre accounting during the year against the budget to meet the acquittal requirements.

This year we saw the launch of the NDIS, which will provide a new way of thinking in the delivery of services to people with a disability.

Chief ExecutiveOfficer’s message

The new world will provide clients, families and carers with choices to direct their own plans for their future needs. Sunnyhaven is well poised to provide a diverse range of services to best meet the needs of people with a disability.

As the new CEO I am encouraged by the commitment of the staff to ensure quality services that focus on the aspirations and dreams of clients in our care. Our Day programs are diversifying to address the changing needs of clients and how to meet the challenges in the year ahead. Our Accommodation services looks forward to maintaining a positive future for our residents and to ensure that our clients have access to their local communities and contribute through meaningful participation.

Over the past year the Board of Management has soundly managed the finances of the organisation which ensures we are well placed to look forward to a sustainable future. The Board is presently setting its strategic objective for the next 3 years taking into consideration the cultural change in disability service provision. My thanks to the Board for their diligence and their resolute commitment to the clients we provide services to.

Thank you to the dedicated staff and to Vani Mudaliar who acted as the CEO until my recent appointment.

highlight ofthe year

Young Endeavour tall shipOn Tuesday 5th March 2013 eleven clients, four staff and one parent from Sunnyhaven Ltd. embarked aboard the Young Endeavour tall ship at the invitation of the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme at Garden Island for a 3 hour lunch cruise sailing around the harbour west of the Harbour Bridge. The clients sailed by Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, Fort Denison, Kirribilli House, under the Harbour Bridge, Luna Park, Darling Harbour and the Opera House.

The Young Endeavour Youth Crew works with organisations which support youth with special needs. Since its establishment, the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme community day sails activity has evolved to become an integral part of the scheme and the youth development program the crew encouraged our clients to get involved with activities,

eg. Hauling the ropes to raise and lower the sails and we also toured below deck and saw where the crew ate, the kitchen, bathrooms, bunks, etc. The clients enjoyed being involved and having the opportunity to assist. All navy and youth crew were very hospitable, friendly and genuinely seemed to enjoy the experience of getting involved with our clients.

About midway through the sailing trip the Youth Crew provided a very entertaining show of funny songs with actions and dance. The lunch which was provided was of a very high standard and was appreciated and enjoyed by all. We would like to thank the Young Endeavour Youth Crew for choosing Sunnyhaven clients for a day out on the tall ship.

Sunnyhaven needs to achieve ‘verification’ to the NSW Disability Service Standards (DSS) June 2015 at the latest, so planning has taken place to schedule an in-house “gap analysis” to assess where the organisation is meeting the KPIs specified and where efforts are needed to achieve or improve these.

Once verification is achieved no further reports to ADHC are required until late 2015, but it is intended to maintain KPI reports internally as an example of best practice and striving for business excellence.

The DSS verification provides Sunnyhaven with an opportunity to link in implementation of the new (2012) work, health and safety regulations, and its associated risk based integrated processes. Typical examples of integrated initiatives already under way are the Person Centred Planning approach to clients and an ongoing oversight of restricted practices actively focussed on achieving improved client well-being which took place late October.

The DSS developments have also promoted a full review of the existing QualitySystem,policies,processes,systems, and documents to ensure that simplification is achieved in the way Sunnyhaven staff carry out their duties. It also provides a challenging but welcome incentive to reduce replication and bureaucracy, and consider time-saving developments such as semi-automated and (ideally) automated reporting processes for DSS KPIs as well as internal statistics and reports.

The involvement of staff at all levels in these exciting activities is being promoted and the planned training of ten staff members in Internal Auditing techniques is an example expected to foster a constructive and positive approach to working with each other. It is anticipated that ongoing and useful checks by fellow employees in different locations and programs will facilitate networking links fostering improved and active communications and information transfers.

The existing documents that form theQualitySystemandfilesintheSunnyhaven servers are being reviewed to identify informal features that may be superfluous or additional to the planned system. Placement of these into the documented SharePoint facility will be progressed with the preparation for the DSS, as we try to strive for a common source of information, easily accessed by all staff.

Prioritising and scheduling for the DSS verification visit by an approved independent third-party will be clearer following the ‘gap analysis’, but planning at this point in time is based on Sunnyhaven being in a position to achieve that by mid to late February 2014.

Life Choices and Active Aging are two new models which Sunnyhaven successfully gained accreditation to deliver. I look forward to growing this flexible service type which gives clients greater choices on how and when they utilise their funding.

The Out and About program is currently used to provide activities and staffing to residential clients in the evenings and on weekends. Out and About participants have attended a variety of meaningful

activities throughout the year. The physical health program includes regular walking, bowling and swimming programs. The benefits of gentle regular exercise are yielding improved fitness and general tone for participants. Weekend activities have included outings to speedway racing, steam train rides, markets, fairs, festivals, attractions, museums, horse races, disco and social clubs.

Sunnyhaven Day Program Services consists of Community Participation (CP), CAS (Community Access Service), Life Choices program, Post School Options, Active Ageing, Koala, Transition to Work, Out & About and Coffee Club.

out & about clients to attend the Speedway Races. Coral also organised parking and special pit pass. Special thanks also to Liz Mader who has coordinated the out and about programming this year.

Next year I hope to further develop the out and about programs by making the programs and activities accessible to a wider range of individuals.

Coffee club has been running from Sunnyhaven for more than 10 years. It is a social club held on Friday evenings. Individuals and their carers from all over Sydney attend, for many it is an event that they look forward to all week. It is a fun time for catching up with friends, dancing and karaoke. A light supper is provided in the low cost of $10.00 for the evening’s entertainment. This year, coordinator Alex Yovanovic reports that the attendance has increased and that the evening continues to be a popular event. There have been some fancy dress and themed nights, valentines- where many wore red, Halloween – complete with spider webs and spooky costumes, Christmas and Easter celebrations. Birthdates are celebrated and attendees are becoming well versed in singing happy birthday. One person said that it was like a ready-made party! Alex hopes to continue to attract new participants and provide more themed evenings next year.

CAS (Community Access Service) based at Penshurst, this year has developed a close partnership with New Era Day Program Services in Sutherland. They have combined programs on many occasions which has forged new friendships and

expanded program choices. Some of the new initiatives introduced to CAS clients this year have included Tai Chi, horse riding, library visits and a fishing program.

Melbourne cup day, Australia Day, Xmas in July, The Easter Show, Cultural Cooking Days, Footy Fever Days and CircusQuircushavebeensomeofthespecial events CP & CAS clients have attended and participated in.

This year Sunnyhaven Community Participation has continued to develop its strong links with The Special Olympics. The sporting events which clients actively participated in during the 2012/ 13 financial year, included bocce, basketball, soccer, ten pin bowling league competition, athletics and soccer.

Individual achievements include a person who fulfilled their lifelong dream when they were supported to sing on stage at St George Leagues club. Another individual has gained employment with Woolworths and wears their uniform with great pride. It is a delight to hear of the friendships and camaraderie that has been formed with their work colleagues. Great courage was shown by a person who overcame their shyness and spoke at the daily morning meeting. Reading a page from a book each morning to his friends has become a regular ritual for someone who previously found it challenging to read out loud. There are so many personal stories of growth and learning which have been accomplished through the encouraging support of staff, family and determination of individuals.

A highlight for many was the day of sailing spent on the tall ship The Endeavour, an article about this was written in The Leader Newspaper.

Residents from Anglicare Nursing Home, family members and friends attended Grandparents day which was hosted by Community Participation clients. It was wonderful to honour and celebrate the valuable contribution Grandparents have in our lives. The event was so successful that it will be hosted each year.

As Program Supervisor I attended 3 expos with the Coordinator to promote the day programs and other services. There have been many enquiries and applications for Sunnyhaven services as a result. For many school leavers, their parents and carers, transport arrangements to and from the day programs was a genuine issue. After negotiations and further discussion Sunnyhaven is providing transport to new clients for 2014.

An open day was held in June which was attended by upcoming school leavers, their carers and family

members. The publication of a bi-monthly newsletter has received many compliments for keeping everyone up to date with news and achievements.

The format of individual meetings has changed to Person Centred Planning (PCP) across all services. Many clients and family members have provided positive feedback on the new meeting format, more meaningful goals and outcomes are being achieved for the individual as a result.

I look forward to further developing the Community Participation, CAS and Day program services by utilising a person centred approach to support the participants to get the maximum benefit out of their individual program .

Next year will see the introduction of a revamped, increased focused program for all day services. This will include more choices, a broader range of centre based activities and the option of participating in several different programs each day.

Residential Services saw many changes during 2012 and 2013, with changes to Support Staff and Managing Staff. Also one resident moved house to better suit her needs. On a sad note we also saw the passing of two residents.

Vale Tony VidelTony was a long-time resident and member of the Sunnyhaven family and passed away soon after transferring to a Nursing Home. Tony has been sadly missed by his many friends in Sunnyhaven.

House ImprovementsImprovements were made to several of our houses including floating floors being installed at Lorraine Street and Park Street. Major renovations were carried out at Park Street including two new bathrooms and laundry.

Major renovations were also carried out at head office with a new office for Supervisors, new Board Room and Training Room.

TrainingAll Staff received comprehensive training over 4 days in Person Centred Planning and 10 participants were then selected for further training as Person Centred Champions who are to assist Staff implement Person centred Plans.

All Management Staff completed a Diploma of Management through the Institute of Frontline Management.

HolidaysMany resident experienced exciting holidays through Organisations such as Careaway and two Residents accessed their trip by plane independently.

Residents at Tavistock Road holidayed on the South Coast while their home was painted and carpeted. They were so excited they immediately asked when could they do it again.

Our Respite service aims to provide a positive experience for both the carer and the person with a disability.

Our centre based respite service operates seven days a week. We have a welcoming and friendly atmosphere staffed by experienced and caring people.

Our staff are selected from a broad range of backgrounds, qualifications and skills.

We select only those people who have a proven ability to work well with all types of clients.

Sunnyhaven Ltd has been providing care to people with an intellectual disability for sixty years. We are a very client focused organisation and always looking for innovative ways to provide a variety of social and recreational activities .We provide new experiences and opportunities to develop new friendships for people with disabilities.

Sunnyhaven respite service provides families and unpaid carers of a person with a disability with planned, short-term, time-limited breaks from their usual caring role.

Koala Play group provides a centre based early intervention program to pre-school aged children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Sunnyhaven has a memorandum of understanding with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect).

Early intervention specialists and other qualified staff, provided by Aspect, assist in the delivery of the child and parent support components.

There have been several new enrolments at the Koala playgroup for 2013.

Each term there is a theme which the children enjoy this also helps to maintaining focus and continuity. The

animal term theme involved a game which matched animal pictures; this was a fun new experience for the children. Songs, craft ,singing and movements in the theme provided more fun and language skills development.

Team Leader Roslyn and assistant Angeline went to visit some of the children at their preschools. They were lucky enough to observe one of the children’s therapy sessions at Sensational Kids.

The Koala Playgroup went to Homebush Park for a fun filled picnic day. A teddy bears picnic later in the year was a great success with the children and their parents having a playful time.
