April/May 2013

Dear Profressional Ladies of Central Missouri:

March can definitely bring unpredicatable weather! We need to Bar-B-Que that GROUNDHOG and feed him to Colorado State! "Secret is in the Sauce"!! WIC week, March 6-10, 2013 was a phenonminal success. Central Missouir's first annual A-Z Seminar totally rocked!! We had outstanidng speakers and great attendance. We gained one new member with 3-4 potential new members. Welcome, Connie Rademan-Ziebarth with Green’s Electric. We wish to express sincere appreciation to The Builders Association for their partnership and continued support for NAWIC. Thanks to the many sponsors. We could not have done it without their help. It must also be said that a huge thanks goes out to NAWIC Southwest Chapter #366 for letting us steal, with pride, the A-Z Seminar concept! These ladies are on the leading edge.

What about the joint chapter brunch!! Well, I think this event warrants repeating. Even the dreary day with the continued rain could not dampen the sizzling hot energy of the Region 6 NAWIC ladies. The food was awesome but the networking was so powerful!! This will go down in history as one of the very best WIC Week's for Central Missouri! Thanks to Sandra Carter for the arrangements and flyer! April's monthly meetimg will be held on the second Monday, April 8, 2013. We will be touring the United Rental/RSC Rental Equipment facility @ 3215 Paris Road, Columbia MO. We will be joined by SteveTuttle, Store Manager, Bob Roth, Territory Manager and Matt Brunk, Salesman. Mr. Tuttle, will be sharing the "5S Technique of Workplace Organization". Dinner will be catered by Lee's Chicken for the cost of $9. Please be sure to make your reservations with Sharon Niekamp @ [email protected]. It is that time of year to be thinking about your role in NAWIC. The nominating committee will need to be elected to present the slate of officers for NAWIC 2013-2014 year. We will need volunteers for the nominating committee. Please be thinking of the personal and professional growth to be gained by serving as an NAWIC Chapter officer. May 13, 2013 NAWIC meeting will be a tour of the New St. Mary's Health Complex. June brings the CSI/NAWIC Golf Tournament, June 10, 2013 @ Old Hawthone County Club and Golf Course, 10:00 AM Continental breakfast with registration and shot gun start at 11:00 AM, dinner to follow completion of golf and prizes awarded.

Maggie, President, Central Missouri Chapter #341 2012-2013 The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) originally began as Women in Construction of

Fort Worth, Texas. Sixteen women working in the construction industry founded it in 1953. Knowing that

women represented only a small fraction of the construction industry, the founders organized NAWIC to

create a support network. Women in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful that it gained its national

charter in 1955 and became the National Association of Women in Construction. Today, NAWIC provides its

Safety Corner Sue Martin

MANAGE YOUR SPEED:

• Slow Down when approaching all work zones. You will be in the work zone quicker than you think. • Follow Posted Speed Limits, especially within construction zones, and try to maintain a consistent

speed with the traffic flow. And adjust your speed for weather conditions. • Don't Resume Normal Speed until you see roadway signs indicating it's safe to do so.

MANAGE YOUR SPACE:

• Leave Room. Leave adequate braking room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Count out at least two seconds from the time the car ahead of you passes an object and the time your own car passes that object. Also, keep a safe distance between your vehicle and traffic barriers, trucks, construction equipment and workers.

• Don't Pass on the Shoulder. Don't drive across the median. This creates a very dangerous situation for you, construction workers and other motorists -- not to mention the steep fine.

• Leave Yourself an Out. When stopped in traffic, leave a safety zone between you and the vehicle in front of you. A good rule of thumb is that when stopped in traffic you should be able to see the bottom of the tires of the vehicle in front of you.

• Watch Out for Tailgaters. Do not force tailgaters to back off by slamming on your brakes or reducing your speed significantly. This practice can lead to road rage and increases the chances of a collision. When possible, pull over and let them pass. If this is not possible, turn your headlights on and off several times during daylight hours to illuminate your tail lights and warn tailgaters they are too close. If at night, lightly tap your brake pedal to illuminate your brake lights.

MANAGE YOUR STRESS:

• Keep Your Cool. Calm down and don't rush. Remember, the temporary inconvenience of a construction zone will pay off with greatly improved roads soon.

• Pay Attention. Avoid cell phone or radio distractions, as well as those of other stopped cars or construction.

• Expect Delays. Use the MoDOT Traveler Information map and other available information to keep yourself informed about construction on your route. Leave a bit earlier, if necessary, to arrive at your destination on time. Consider using an alternate route that bypasses the construction zones.

The most fun thing I have ever done at a NAWIC event:

"Running around downtown St. Louis on an Architectural Scavenger Hunt at Forum 2002," states Connie Leipard.

"Denver Colorado 2012, going to the top of Mt. Evans with my besties, Holly and Sharon. Stopping for lunch with them at a very unique lodge on Lake Echo with awesome food. Traveling through Genesee Park on a lazy day of fun and laughter," states Maggie Eichholz.

"Summer picnic many years ago participating in a team relay, spinning a bat on our heads," states Sharon Niekamp.

"Mother Daughter Construction Career Day and dinner and drinks with the ladies of Central Missouri is a definite plus," states Diane Heckemeyer.

" Christmas Social 2012, riding the Amtrak Train to Herman visiting the winery and having dinner," state, Sue Martin

"El Jimador restaurant October 2011 and the ladies of Central Missouri," states, Sylvia Harper "APC 2010 at the Lodge of Four Seasons Egg Drop Team Builder," states Karla Prosser.
