he FSU College of Education Dean’s Symposium, established in 2007, is an annual event that brings together educational researchers and scholars,

state policy-makers, school administrators, teachers and teacher educators, agency officials, and Florida State faculty and students to discuss educational issues of critical importance to our state and the nation. This year’s 7th annual Dean’s Symposium will focus on ensuring quality in online learning.

While online learning has been a part of educational landscape for over a decade, critical issues are emerging around how to ensure that our online learning opportunities are of high quality and prepare students for a world that demands new levels of knowledge and skills. Join state policy-makers, school administrators, teachers, agency officials, Florida State faculty and students as we discuss the future of online learning across K-12 and postsecondary settings.

DEB ADAIRDr. Deb Adair is the Managing Director and Chief Planning Officer of the non-profit Quality MattersTM Program, a widely-adopted program for quality assurance in online learning serving K12, postsecondary and other organizations in the U.S. and internationally. With over 20 years’ experience in higher education, she has held faculty appointments in management at the American University and Troy State University and is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Maryland University College.

Dr. Adair serves on the boards of the technology-based education associations WCET and NUTN and has authored and presented widely on the topic of quality assurance for online learning.

ANDREW NGDr. Andrew Ng is a Co-founder of Coursera, and a Computer Science faculty member at Stanford. In 2011, he led the development of Stanford University’s main MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) platform, and also taught an online Machine Learning class that was offered to over 100,000 students, leading to the founding of Coursera. Dr. Ng’s goal is to give everyone in the world access to a high quality education, for free.

Today, Coursera partners with top universities to offer high quality, free online courses. With 80 partners, nearly 400 courses, and 3.6 million

students, Coursera is currently the largest MOOC platform in the world. Outside online education, Dr. Ng’s research work is in machine learning; he is also the Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab.

MARILYN DICKEY

JEFF MURPHY

ONLINE LEARNING& QUALITY

Dr. Marilyn Dickey is Director of Distance Learning at Tallahassee Community College. As Director, she has focused the College’s energies on becoming a front-runner in the competitive arena of web-based program delivery.

Dr. Dickey is the former CEO of Renaissance Educational Consulting

Services. Her previous experience includes 11 years as the Director of Instructional and Information Technology at Florida A&M University. She has also facilitated online doctoral level courses with the School of Advanced Studies at the University of Phoenix.

Jeff Murphy joined Florida Virtual School in 1998, bringing nearly 10 years of teaching experience to the school as the developer and teacher of the Marine Science course, and as co-developer and teacher of the AP Biology course. He served as a Web Development Specialist, Project Manager for in-state course licensing, Database Web Manager, Instructional

Leader, Director of Instruction, and Director of Instructional Support before moving into his current role as Senior Director of Instructional Operations. Murphy holds a B.S. from Kent State University, M.S. in Educational Technology and a Ed.S in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

RHONDA BLACKWELL FLANAGAN

Dr. Susann Rudasill, Director of FSU’s Office of Distance Learning, has had a distinguished career as an academician, educator, and leader in educational administration. During her career, Dr. Rudasill has served at every level of higher education in Florida: from research to instruction, assessment to leadership. Her experience has led to her current

tenure as the Director of FSU’s Office of Distance Learning (ODL). As Director, Dr. Rudasill supports the University’s extension of academic excellence through online resources, secure testing services, and academic distance programs that meet the needs of the University’s geographically diverse student populations.

Dr. Rhonda Blackwell-Flanagan is an Associate In Educational Leadership in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at FSU. Dr. Blackwell-Flanagan holds a clinical position that includes, teaching, advising, and program administration. She plays a major role in coordinating the online Specialist,

Master’s, and Modified programs in educational leadership that lead to Level I Leadership Certification in the state of Florida. Her research interests revolve around leadership impact on school culture and climate, leadership preparation effectiveness, and developing cultural competency in school leaders.

J. DAVID ARMSTRONG

ROBERT B. BRADLEY

ONLINE LEARNING POLICY & VISION

J. David Armstrong, Jr. brings more than 25 years of experience as a state and national leader in higher education and economic development to his presidency at Broward College. Under President Armstrong’s leadership, the College has moved from a traditional community college to an institution that also offers baccalaureate programs in targeted workforce areas. President Armstrong

serves in a variety positions with non-profit, workforce and educational organizations including immediate past Chairman of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance. President Armstrong also serves as Chair of Leadership Florida.

Dr. Robert B. Bradley (Bob) is Vice President for Planning and Programs. He also serves as Director of the Institute of Science and Public Affairs (ISPA) at Florida State University. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics with High Honors, and his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Florida.

Dr. Bradley has published numerous reports and articles on inter-governmental relations, state policy, and budget issues. His recent works focus on state budgeting and state intergovernmental relations. He serves as a member of the Board of the State and Local Government Review.

W. ANDREW MCCOLLOUGH

PATRICE IATAROLA

Dr. W. Andrew McCollough received an undergraduate degree in Industrial Management from the University of Florida in 1957. After serving several years as an Army aviator, he returned to the University of Florida and received a Ph.D. in Business and Economics in 1971. He has been a faculty member, Professor of Finance in the Warrington College of Business Administration since that time.

He was appointed as the first Associate Provost for Teaching and Technology in July 2009. Prior to this

current position, he served as Senior Associate Dean, Associate Dean, and Chair of the Department of Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate in the Warrington College of Business Administration. He continues to teach finance in the MBA program at the College.

In his current role, he is the primary source of contact for all online and distance activity at the University of Florida and the chair of several University Committees and Workgroups.

Dr. Patrice Iatarola is an Associate Professor of Educational Policy and Evaluation in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. She received her Ph.D. from The Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University.

Dr. Iatarola’s current research focuses on high school course takings and offerings with a specific focus on advanced courses and college readiness. She is interested in understanding how state and federal policies and incentives have shaped and impacted this landscape.
