Dear alumni and friends,

I am pleased to recognize the many committed donors whose generosity supports the mission of CaliforniaUniversity of Pennsylvania.

For more than 160 years, Cal U has provided students with a solid, well-rounded academic experience; confidencein their preparation for competitive and challenging careers; and pride in the privilege of carrying on Cal U’stradition of excellence. Our University’s success relies on the generosity of donors like you — our alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and our corporate and foundation partners.

Cal U has an ambitious agenda for the coming years as we strive to balance our traditional strengths withopportunities to meet the evolving needs of the 21st-century workforce. Your support provides the margin ofexcellence that sets Cal U apart as a strong and vibrant institution of higher learning.

Whether you designate your gift to support scholarships, internships, research, academic programming or other needs, your contribution createsopportunities that directly benefit our hard-working students. Each initiative mentioned in the 2012 Annual Donor Report is one more step on Cal U’sjourney toward continuing success.

Once again we are offering our Annual Donor Report as an online publication. This report includes a listing of donors by gift category and class year.To view this portion of the report, please enter the password DONORS2012 when prompted. You will be able to access the listings at yourconvenience.

The 2012 Annual Donor Report celebrates you, our family of donors who have helped to open the doors of opportunity. Your dedication andcommitment to Cal U are immeasurable, and your generous gifts are helping to build a promising future for our students.

Endowment PerformanceIncorporated in 1986, the Foundation for California University of Pennsylvania is proud to support the mission and goals of Cal U and its students. The Foundation’s endowment fund represents donated assets permanently invested to generate an annual return for the support of Universityinitiatives, both currently and far into the future.

In 2012, the Foundation’s Endowment Fund grew to more than 315 individual funds and reached a current market value of over $24 million. Thesefunds are endowed gifts which provide perpetual financial support for scholarships, faculty chairs, and other enhancement programs and services.

While the market showed continued improvement in 2012, the Foundation continues to review, monitor and reposition assets to protect, preserveand grow the endowment. Fundraising Results andthe Class of 2012Our family of donors continuesto support the University’svision through generous gifts. In 2012 we received over$6.1 million in cash andpledges from more than 4,500alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends.

We also received substantial contributions from regional foundations, corporations and organizations, and support for endowed scholarshipsand programs remained solid.

Once again, our Cal U seniors and their families joined forces duringthe annual Cal U for Life Senior Gift Drive.

Together they raised nearly $12,000 to endow a scholarship in thename of the Class of 2012. This is the largest amount raised by thecurrent graduating class since the inception of the Cal U for Lifeinitiative.

The Campaign to Build Character and CareersAt the end of December 2012, Cal U’s$35 million capital campaign reachednearly $33 million in private support. Ofthat total, $21.2 million, or 64 percent, was designated for scholarships.

Recognizing the needs of our students, scholarship support continues to be thecampaign’s primary focus. In 2012alone, the campaign received over $3.7million in private gifts for scholarships.

Through your continued generosity, lastyear Cal U awarded 567 privately-fundedscholarships that exceeded $1 million inaid to students.

In addition, private gifts funded internships, undergraduate researchand various programs at the University.

2012 InitiativesCREATING OPPORTUNITIES … FOR SCHOLARSHIPSThe importance of private scholarship support increases as the costof higher education rises. The Cal U for Life program encouragesstudents to be appreciative of the financial help provided by privatedonors.

Our 16th annual Scholarship Recognition Dinner brought together thealumni and friends who fund private scholarships and the recipients ofthose gifts.

Offering remarks on behalf ofall scholarship donors, Dr.Harry ’65 and Mrs. Linda ’64Serene described how theirfamily teamed up to enrichstudents’ lives by creating anendowed scholarship inmemory of Harry’s parents.Together with brothers Dr. Frank Serene ’64, Dr. Michael Serene ’67and Dr. James Serene ’71, the Serene family established the Dr.Michael F. and Mrs. Clara H. Serene Scholarship, which supportsstudents who are majoring in science and music.

In a demonstration of remarkable loyaltyand dedication to Cal U, a $1.95 millionbequest from the estate of G. Ralph SmithII, a retired assistant professor of English, will provide scholarships to studentsattending the University.

The gift — one of the the largestscholarship donations in the school’s

modern history — has been placed in an endowment so that awardscan be made for many years to come. The University anticipatesawarding the G. Ralph Smith II General Scholarships beginning in the2013-2014 academic year.

Moving Forward Cal U is committed to enriching students’ lives by making the dream ofa college education affordable for all. Your continued support of thescholarship program at Cal U will make those dreams a reality.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES … FOR INTERNSHIPSAs part of The Washington Center Seminar Program, nine Cal Ustudents served as volunteer interns at the Republican and Democraticnational conventions. They met politicians, media figures andcelebrities — and had an experience they’ll never forget.

Four of the students sent back reports for the University’s website, and on-the-spot photos kept the campus community engaged. Whenthey returned, the students described internship highlights at aConstitution Day presentation.

Generous gifts from alumni donors made the internships moreaffordable, and our students truly had a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Established by Tom ’75 and Karen Rutledge, The Rutledge InternshipAwards continue to help students explore their career interests outsideof the classroom.

During the summer, several Cal Ustudents received RutledgeAwards to support internships atThe Wilds, a private, nonprofitconservation center located onnearly 10,000 acres ofreclaimed mine land in ruralsoutheastern Ohio.

The Wilds was created as theconservation center of the futureby a group of civic leaders, political leaders and zoo

professionals who believed that a serious, scientific approach wasrequired to find solutions to environmental concerns.

From its inception, The Wilds has been envisioned as a facility thatcombines cutting-edge conservation science and education programswith unique visitor opportunities.

Cal U and The Wilds have a close partnership, and many students visitthe conservation center to perform research and field studies underthe supervision of Dr. Carol Bocetti and Cal U’s Department ofBiological and Environmental Sciences.

Moving Forward Cal U will strive to increase the number of local, regional, national andinternational internship opportunities. With your help, our students cangain a competitive edge in the job market through actual workexperience in their chosen career fields.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES … FOR RESEARCHA $25,000 grant from Dominion Resources is enabling Cal U geologystudents to continue environmental monitoring of Pike Run, a smallwaterway near campus.

Under the guidance of Dr. Kyle Fredrick, students are conducting real-time monitoring of stream flow and water quality, extending an existingGeographic Information Systems database, implementing a plan forregular monitoring of the 29-square-mile Pike Run Watershed, andexperimenting with small-scale remediation methods to improve waterquality.

The project also will reconfigure the Pike Run Watershed Associationas a permanent, active membership organization within the Cal UGeology Club.

Nearly 40 geology students from seven area universities got a headstart on their careers when the Department of Earth Sciences and theCal U Geology Club hosted a Pittsburgh Geological Society DrillingWorkshop at the SAI Farm.

Students experienced a geologist’s typical workday, complete withdrilling, taking core samples and installing water-monitoring wells thatCal U students will use for further research. They learned to readtopographical and landslide maps and gained hands-on experience insoil-testing and drilling techniques.

The Pittsburgh Geological Society, Dominion Resources and the Cal UGeology Club helped to offset the drilling costs, and professionalgeologists donated their time and equipment for the event.

Moving Forward With the participation of expert faculty mentors, Cal U will continue toexplore new opportunities for expanding undergraduate researchprograms. Strategic partnerships to support this research will allowstudents to become more active participants in their own educationalsuccess.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES … IN ACADEMICSThanks to a generous grant from the Claude Worthington BenedumFoundation, Cal U hosted industry certification for high school andcollege-level mechatronics instructors during the summer.

Trainers from Siemens Technical Academy in Berlin, Germany, taughtthe Siemens Mechatronic Systems Instructor Certification Program.

The timing was right, because Cal U is preparing to launch a newbachelor’s degree program in mechatronics engineering technology infall 2013.

Mechatronics blends mechanical and electrical engineering technologywith computer science. A mechatronics engineer works withmechanical devices that incorporate mechanical, electrical andsoftware components, such as robots, automated guided vehicles orother “smart” electro-mechanical systems.

The first program of its kind in the Pennsylvania State System ofHigher Education, Cal U’s four-year mechatronics program willcomplement the University’s two-year associate degree in roboticsengineering technology.

Cal U’s electrical engineering technology (EET) program received agenerous gift from CONSOL Energy Inc. that will be used to expandworkstations in the Senior Projects Lab. The addition of state-of-the-artequipment will enhance the overall educational experience for studentsentering this high-demand career field.

A bachelor’s degree program, EET blends minds-on theory withhands-on applications to develop the knowledge and skills required todesign, develop, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate and repairelectrical and electronic systems.

Thanks to the hands-on nature of theEET program, Cal U graduates areprepared to analyze and solve manyof the problems that arise inelectronics-related industries.

Moving Forward Cal U continues to expand academicprograms that meet workforce needsand to prepare students for “high-priority” occupations. Support for themechatronics engineering technologyprogram will enable Cal U graduatesto meet regional workforce demandsin advanced manufacturing andrelated fields.

A student speaks . . .“Because of my scholarship I canspend more time focusing on theacademic side of college instead ofworrying about the financial aspect. Thanks to our generous donors, Ican attend a well-respecteduniversity and obtain a qualityeducation.

“Cal U offers students manyopportunities to learn, grow and

explore interests both inside and outside of the classroom. I ama scholar-athlete participating in men’s track and field and men’sclub soccer. I am also involved in numerous clubs andorganizations, such as the Honors Program, Sigma Tau Gamma

fraternity, the Accounting Club and the Interfraternity Council, where I serve as treasurer.

“You may not fully realize how important every penny is to acollege student like me. Each scholarship donation could meanthe difference between a student being able to reasonably affordcollege or not. From personal experience, I know that thegreatest gift a donor could give a student is the chance to betterhis or her life by providing an opportunity to enjoy the totalcollege experience.

“I am grateful to the Balsano family for giving me the opportunityto flourish here at Cal U. I plan on making every cent count —graduating with honors and living the Cal U experience to thefullest. One day I will pay this gift forward to another student, knowing full well how significant and helpful that gift will be.”
