Chandler-Gilbert Community College was named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This is the seventh consecutive year the college has received this designation, which is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement.

Since 1992, CGCC has sustained and expanded an academic service-learning program, which now engages more than 3,200 students each year, contributing more than 36,290 hours of service to approximately 200 community-based agencies and schools.

“Thanks to our dedicated faculty and service-learning staff, our service-learning program has continued to build year after year with an increasing number of students contributing their time and talents to our community service agencies, building relationships between the two and a strengthening of our community overall,” said CGCC President Linda Lujan. “It’s an honor to receive national recognition for this work.”

Miguel Fernandez and Linda Heartquist were awarded the Gilbert Community Excellence Awards from the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce in November.

English faculty member Miguel Fernandez demonstrates the highest levels of instructional skill and integrity.

Miguel is noted for is the way he models the college’s values of excellence and innovation. He has the talent and skill to meet students on their levels, yet establishes expectations that allow them to learn and grow. He creates meaningful learning experiences and challenges his students to take risks in their own learning.

As director of student-run CGCC Radio, he opens the door to students with eclectic tastes in music, giving them a forum for expressing their individual and diverse identities. His work as a faculty liaison for veterans has positively influenced a number of students and increased awareness of the unique experiences and backgrounds veterans bring to a class.

Miguel is an outstanding example of the faculty of CGCC and his collegial, collaborative and positive approach make him a valued member of the CGCC family.

Linda Heartquist embodies the vision of CGCC in her commitment to every student’s success. As a student services specialist at the Williams campus, Linda interacts and assists a diverse group of students with a variety of needs. She admits, enrolls and processes citizenships forms for all students; helps with pre-advisement and advisement sessions; and is innovative when helping a struggling student search for resources that he or she may need. This is no small feat with a 35 percent increase in enrollment at the Williams campus this past summer.

Her commitment to follow through is modeled through her work as the lead for underage students. In addition to processing their paperwork and interviewing each student, along with the parents, to make sure the student is ready for college. She then contacts each instructor to get approval for an underage student to take the class and monitors their progress throughout the semester.

She is the first to volunteer for events at the campus and has helped with numerous events including many hours planning for, managing the facility set up and gift basket creation, and assisting at CGCC’s signature scholarship-fundraising event Champagne, Chocolate & all that Jazz. Linda is an invaluable member of the CGCC team and an integral part of this outstanding educational community.

Nancy Foote, adjunct science faculty, was named 2012 Teacher of the Year by the Arizona Science Teacher Association. Nancy teaches eighth grade science at San Tan Elementary School. The award honors educators who have a passion for teaching science and making a difference in the lives of children, ASTA honors four teachers each year, one each in the categories of elementary school, middle school, high school and new science teacher. Nancy was recognized for her extensive and creative use of technology to help kids learn difficult math and science concepts.

Using a “flipped classroom” format, she prepares online videos, which her students watch at home the night before class. Then, during class the next day, students put into practice the concept they learned from the videos. Students around the world have watched Foote’s educational videos online and told her they appreciate her demonstrations for solving math and science problems.

“I tell my students that it’s OK to struggle. When you’re finished working through the struggle, there is a great feeling of accomplishment,” Foote said. “But it’s not OK to suffer. I show my students a non-threatening way to solve the problem.”

Nancy is an Arizona Master Teacher and enjoys mentoring other teachers as much as she enjoys her middle school students. “We have an obligation to share,” she said.

Pushpa Ramakrishna was honored for her dedication to service-learning and to excellence in teaching and was named the 2013 CGCC Service-Learning Faculty of the Year. Pushpa deepened her connections between student learning and the community this year by establishing a partnership with Higley Unified School District and their Future Cities project. Working with their district coordinator, Pushpa placed all of the students in her Honors Biology 181 classes in the fall and spring semesters in sixth-grade classrooms. The focus was mentoring and tutoring the younger students in principles of biology and sustainability, helping them to design their concept of a future city. The college students also prepared a presentation on an alternative power source to present to the classes they had mentored.

In addition, Pushpa’s other Biology 181 students participated in the annual Feathered Friends event in collaboration with the Gilbert Riparian Institute. Students staffed educational booths for the general public to learn more about environmental topics and also presented posters from their research during the semester. Pushpa partners with this event every year.

Pam Davenport, Emeritus DistinctionThe MCCCD governing board granted emeritus distinction to English faculty Pamela Davenport at their March meeting.

Pam has served with distinction as one of Chandler-Gilbert’s founding faculty members. Since her arrival at CGCC in 1987 as English faculty, Pam expanded her involvement to include learning communities, faculty professional development, student organizations, as well as serving several terms as chair of the Languages and Humanities division.

Pam co-founded a distinctive part of CGCC’s faculty development program called the Network of Excellence, a professional learning community that provides new and continuing residential faculty the opportunity to learn about the college and to improve the quality of learning and teaching.

For many years Pam was faculty liaison to CGCC’s Native American student organization, Eagle Feather.

Pam has facilitated many writing workshops for faculty and instituted MCCD’s Writing Reflection and Renewal Project.

In 2006, Pam co-founded the Reflection, Renewal, and Role initiative at CGCC, which supports integrity, respect, inclusion, communication, and cooperation, and helps employees incorporate these principles to achieve a renewed sense of vocation inthe day-to-day workplace. Under Pam’s leadership R3 continues to flourish and grow.

Larry Miller, Emeritus DistinctionThe MCCCD governing board approved emeritus distinction for retired CGCC library faculty Larry Miller at the January meeting.

After serving three years as a reference librarian at Glendale Community College, Larry came to what was known then as the Chandler-Gilbert Education Center to establish its library in July 1987. For the next 25 years, Larry played a key role in providing excellent library services to CGCC students, faculty and staff, and was a major figure in the advancement of the college.

Among his many accomplishments are leadership in the design and development of the 50,000 square-foot learning resource center at CGCC’s Pecos Campus, and his personal involvement in securing traveling exhibits rarely seen at community colleges. Larry negotiated with prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian and the United Nations to secure exhibits that attracted thousands of visitors to CGCC’s library. In addition, he collaborated with faculty from multiple disciplines to establish CGCC’s signature co-curricular events program known as SEE Your World.

Valley of the Sun United Way campaign committee members Lynda Anderson, Brent Bartel, Joel Brame, Heather Frengley and Scott Wickham helped CGCC raise more than $22,000 to support many health and human services programs and nonprofits that provide vital support to children, teens, seniors, individuals, and families in crisis in our communities. In addition to surpassing the $21,000 goal, CGCC employees had the highest increased participation rate across the district for the 2012 United Way campaign. Thanks to all employees who gave. Your gifts make the difference in the lives of so many throughout the Valley.
