aBOUt eaGLe aLL-acceSS Eagle All-Access is a “virtual stadium” – a seamless Internet experience – where viewers can follow all of EMU’s athletic pro-grams and all of the Eagles’ content they desire without ever having to leave home. It is a one-stop-shop for live games, news conferences, coaches’ interviews and up-to-the minute scores, news and highlights. Subscription packages are just $6.95 for a 24-hour pass, $10.95 for an entire month or $79.95 for a full calendar year. A minimum of 70 events are scheduled in 2012-13 with further dates still being finalized for broadcast on All-Access. Dur-ing the 2010-11 campaign, EMU streamed 70 live events with other features appear-ing in the On-Demand Archive section. In 2011-12 that number was upped to more then 120 broadcasts. Eagle All-Access will video stream every home football, volleyball, men’s and wom-en’s basketball game. In the spring, All-Ac-cess shifts to audio-only in its coverage of EMU baseball and softball.

aBOUt WemU WEMU-FM will again serve as the flagship for EMU football and basketball broadcasts, as part of its broad coverage of EMU ath-letics. Listeners in eight counties can catch Eagles’ games on 89.1 FM. As a public radio station with a large broad-based audience, WEMU’s signal extends from Washtenaw County to the Detroit metropolitan and Toledo, Ohio markets. Eagle fans around the world can access live game broadcasts, compatible with a variety of software and media players, at http://wemu.org.

matt Shepard play-by-play for Football

The 2012 season marks the 12th year that veteran Detroit-area broadcaster Matt Shepard will call the action on the field for the EMU football broadcast team. Shepard first handled EMU foot-ball play-by-play duties during the 1999 season. He returned in 2002, and has held the post for nine straight seasons. A widely known football and basketball broadcaster, Shepard is the voice of University of Michigan men’s basketball as well as the morning drive host on WDFN (1130 AM) in Detroit. During his career, he has called NFL Europe games for FOX and, in 2005, Arena Football League games for Fox Sports Net and was the broadcast voice for a pair of WNBA Championships by the Detroit Shock. Shepard’s Fox Sports Detroit resume also includes extensive work as a report-er for the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Tigers, and play-by-play work for the Michigan High School Athletic Association football state finals and the CCHA hockey television package. In 2004, Shepard hosted the EMU Football Review with Head Coach Jeff Genyk on Comcast Local television.

chad Bushplay-by-play for Basketball, Volleyball and Baseball

The 2012-13 season marks the fifth consecutive year that Chad Bush has been calling baseball, volleyball and basketball games for Eastern Michigan University. Bush received the call to broad-cast the baseball team’s 2009 Mid-American Conference Tournament run on Eagle All-Access, be-fore adding a complete schedule of volleyball, women’s basketball, baseball and softball games in 2009-10. Then prior to the 2010-11 campaign, Bush was tabbed to take over the main responsibili-ties of EMU men’s and women’s basketball on WEMU, while still working select volleyball, baseball and softball games on Eagle All-Access. Prior to joining the Green and White, Bush served from 2006 until 2009 as the broadcaster of Wayne State University football and men’s basketball. A graduate of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s High School, Bush was on the football team at Central Michigan University before transferring to WSU to finish his degree in Speech Communication.

Ryan Wooleyplay-by-play for Women’s Basketball

Ryan Wooley has pursued a career in sports broadcasting since his childhood and is proof that anybody can do whatever they put their mind to. Wooley grew up in Westland Michigan where he graduated from John Glenn High School and then went on to Eastern Michigan University, where he received a Bachelors degree in “Electronic Media and Film”. While at EMU, Ryan worked for WQBR, a student radio station where he served as the host of two shows per week. He also anchored the weekly news, delivered halftime updates during football and basketball on 89.1 WEMU, and handled the play by play for both football and basketball on the campus television station “E-TV”. Currently, Wooley is the play by play voice of the John Glenn High School football team as well as the EMU women’s basketball team on Eagle All-Access. In his free time, Ryan likes to work on cars, play video games, watch sports and hang out with friends. He currently resides in Belleville with his wife Michelle.

Herman mooreanalyst for Football

The 2012 season marks the first year that Herman Moore will be the color analyst for the EMU football broadcast team. This will not be Moore’s first experience behind a microphone. From 1996-98, he co-hosted a Lions radio show every Monday night in addition to appearing on local television shows on Sunday nights. He also served as a color analyst in 2007 for the Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League. Moore graduated from the University of Virginia in 1990 with a degree in rhetoric and communication studies. The four-time (1994-97) NFL Pro Bowler played 11 seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he set several receiving records. The 1991 first-round draft pick (10th overall) broke an NFL record with 123 receptions in 1995, and was the second player ever (after Jerry Rice) to record three 100-recep-tion seasons. He leads the Lions in almost every historical receiving category including receptions (670), receiving yards (9,174) and receiving touchdowns (62).

RejuvenationAs another cold, long winter nears its end, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team begins its rigorous training regimen to prepare for another run at a Mid-American Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The 2013 season will be one of renewal and rejuvenation for a squad ready to forget a dis-appointing 2012 season with a strong balance of experienced pitching and young, raw offensive potential.

The 2013 Eagles return... 20 letterwinners 11 pitchers 6 starting position players 3 weekend starting pitchers 1 2012 All-MAC selection

arms RaceFifth-year Head Coach Jay alexander has spent his time at Eastern Michigan building up a MAC contender. In 2013, the strength of Alexander’s team will be pitching. EMU boasts one of the deepest and most talented pitching staff in the conference, returning all but two hurlers. Several of EMU’s leading pitchers were sidelined for the entire 2012 season due to Tommy John Surgery including southpaw Brian Hill and right-handers Kris-tian calibuso and Kendall Lewis.

Lewis will team up with fellow senior neil Butara to an immedi-ate impact in the starting rotation, where he will see his first ac-tion since toeing the rubber since the 2011 campaign. In his last full season (2010), he went 7-4 in 14 starts with a 4.21 ERA and a .255 batting average against. Hill, one of five lefties, has never thrown an official pitch for the Eagles, having sat out 2011 as a redshirt and 2012 for medical reasons.

Kristian calibuso (above) was Eastern Michigan’s closer in 2011 and will compete with senior Joe Battistelli and freshman left-hander Devon Bronson for that role this time around.

Behind the Dishadam Dennison returns behind the dish this season for an EMU squad which has become very deep at the backstop position even with the loss of matt Hitt. Dennison has impressed the EMU coach-ing staff with improved plate presence and power at the dish.

Dennison (right) sophomore will be backed up by transfer adam Sonabend, who will likely carry the bulk of the duties at first base, and freshman tony DiLeo.

Outfield ShiftThe departure of Brent Ohrman in centerfield leaves plenty of responsibility in the hands of senior Daniel Russell (pictured), who will move over from left field for 2013. Russell has built a reputation for solid defensive play dur-ing his time donning the Green and White and should fit in nicely in center.

Right field will be filled by 2012 First Team All-MAC se-lection Sam Ott, who played in every game last season while turning in the third best OPS last year (.828).

A vacancy in left field could be filled by a number of can-didates including junior Dae Bowden, who saw action in 27 games as a utility player last year. Freshmen Jack-son martin and austin Wilson will also get a crack at winning the job.

Alexander will have quite a range of options for his infield this season. With adam Sonabend, senior Jamie Simpson and freshman mitchell mcGeein all capable of playing first base and sophomore John Rubino (left) at shortstop, the remaining two spots will be tightly contested be-tween a mix of candidates. Senior austin Williams split time with Rubino at second base last year, but will have to contend with the likes of fresh-men nick Rotola for that role. Williams and freshman marquise Gill will vie for the third base role. Junior Lee Longo will fill the designated hitter’s spot and will be called upon as a strong middle-of-the-order bat.

Victory from Within

title Run timetable

The Eagles begin their 64th season of competition with a 17-game road trip against Campbell, Washington State, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Cincinnati, and Morehead State. Fri-day, Feb. 15, marks the first game of the year in Buies Creek, N.C. against Campbell.

Then March 15-17, the Eagles will host Butler and Northern Kentucky in the third-annual Oestrike Classic in Ypsilanti. The Green and White is 5-1 all-time at the Oestrike Classic, but will be entering uncharted territory against this sea-son’s field of opponents having never played the Bulldogs nor the Norse.

EMU then hosts Michigan, March 20, for its first-of-five games against Big Ten Conference opponents. Under Alexander, the Eagles have posted a winning record against Big Ten teams in three out of four years including a 3-2 record last season and a sweep of their Washtenaw County rival.

The pursuit of a MAC West Division title kicks off in Oxford, Ohio, March 22-24, when the Eagles take on the Miami RedHawks. The 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament will be held for a second straight season at All-Pro Freight Stadium, May 22-25. The Eagles will have a shot at their eighth conference crown and first since the 2007 campaign.

Oestrike Stadium...named after EMU Hall of Fame Coach Ron Oestrike, was built in 1971, the year following Eastern Michigan’s NAIA Collegiate National Championship and four years before its back-to-back NCAA Worlds Series appear-ances.

improvements to Oestrike Stadium have been ongoing since 1988, starting with the addition of the press box behind home plate. The following year, an inning-by-inning scoreboard with a message center was installed behind the left-field fence. In 1990, four permanent batting cages were added along Hewitt Road behind the left-field fence. The 1992 season marked the beginning of the field improvements, starting with a new outfield fence and practice infield. In 1995, an outfield drainage system and sprinkling system were installed. The playing surface was the focus in 1988 when a new infield surface, pitching mound and bullpen mounds were completed. In the summer of 2001, the dugouts were expanded and drinking fountains were installed. The aesthetics of Oestrike Stadium have been ad-dressed, beginning in 2000 with the addition of lights. The first-ever night game at Oestrike stadium was played May 3, 2000, against the University of Michi-

gan. Today, most Mid-American conference games are played under the lights at Oestrike. The commemorative bricks that line the grandstand section continue to be installed and in the fall of 2006, the infield drainage system was replaced, as was the infield surface. In 2007, the entire infield was ripped out and re-placed with Pro Grass, thanks to several individuals that donated their time and money to make the project a reality. Now in its 42nd year of existence, Oestrike Stadium has received several critical upgrades including an all-new brick facade around the stadium, a new fence surrounding the outfield and a completely remodeled locker room with brand new locker stations for each player. Finally, a new scoreboard will grace left-center field before the conclusion of the 2013 season to complete the stadium beautification process. Former EMU player and current manager of the New York Mets, Terry Collins, has provided the funding for this critical upgrade.

The 2013 season will mark the fifth season for Jay Alexander as Eastern Michigan University’s head baseball coach. Prior to joining the program in 2008, Alexander spent six sea-sons as the head baseball coach at Wayne State University.

The 40-year-old Alexander (3-30-72) is the first African-American head coach in EMU baseball history.

Alexander’s 2012 group continued a streak of seven consecutive sea-sons of qualifying for the Mid-American Conference tournament with a 14-13 record in league play. Led by 33rd-round draft pick Steve We-ber, Alexander’s pitching staff recorded a school-record 389 strikeouts to surpass the 2010 team’s mark of 387. Weber, who was drafted with the 1007th pick of the MLB First-Year Player Draft, became the fourth player taken in the draft during Alexander’s tenure. In addition, Matt

Hitt and Ben Magsig also signed professional contracts. Several of Alexander’s players were recognized for their combined academic and athletic achievements in 2012 as Brent Ohrman and Bo Kinder were each selected first-team Capital One Academic All-District.

In 2011, Alexander’s squad compiled a 37-22 record, the most victories in a single season since the 1982 team won 39. EMU posted its best start to a season (30-15) since 1976, a year in which the team advanced to the College World Series. The Eagles also tied for the longest winning streak in the nation with 11 consecutive victories from April 12-May 4. Alexander won his 250th-career game as a head coach when the Eagles topped Northern Illinois, 4-2, in the MAC Tournament, May 27, 2011.

In 2010, Alexander led the Eagles to two more wins than the previous year, with the team again earning the No. 7 seed in the MAC Tournament, where they finished with a 2-2 mark. Overall, Alexander had one first-team All-MAC selection in Kendall Lewis, who also earned four national player of the week awards during the regular season.

In his first season at EMU, Alexander led the Eagles to a third place finish in the MAC West Division, earn-ing a No. 7 seed in the MAC Tournament. As a team, the 2009 Eagles hit 100 home runs – the most by any EMU team in a single season in school history. Alexander had three players earn All-MAC honors in his first year, one player earn National Player of the Week honors, and one player earn Academic All-American accolades. Alexander also had two players drafted in his first season.

The eighth head coach in Wayne State history, Alexander saw his 2008 squad turn in one of the most memorable years in school history. The Warriors recorded a school-record 34 wins, against just 19 losses, won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season and made it all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. In addition, pitcher Anthony Bass and utility player Adam Kaminski were the first WSU players to earn All-American honors since the 1978 season.

1First Team All-Region Selection

During his six-year tenure, Alexander’s Wayne State teams aver-aged 27 wins a season. He was named GLIAC Coach of the Year twice, in both 2005 and 2008 and the Warriors qualified for the NCAA Division II Regional Championship in both of those sea-sons. He led the 2005 Warriors to the GLIAC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. That 2005 squad recorded 32 regular-season victories to earn its first-ever trip

to the NCAA Regional Championship. In addition, shortstop Frank Jeney was named GLIAC Player of the Year.

In all, Alexander coached 12 All-Region players, 37 All-GLIAC selections and has landed 71 on the GLIAC All-Academic squad. Under Alexander, Wayne State also had its first player sign a major league contract since 1999 when Randy Surratt joined the Chicago White Sox organization after WSU’s 2003 season. Then in 2005, Steve Squires became the first Wayne State player to be selected in the Major League draft when the White Sox picked him in the 49th round. In 2008, Anthony Bass was selected by the San Diego Padres in the fifth round (165th pick overall).

A native of Detroit, Alexander was a standout shortstop and centerfielder at Wayne State from 1993-96. He led the Warriors in hits, runs scored, stolen bases and batting average while a senior and was nationally ranked in all of those categories. He was a first-team All-GLIAC and All-Regional player that season.

Alexander stayed at Wayne State to serve as a baseball assistant under legendary head coach Rod George for five seasons before becoming the head coach in December 2002 when George passed away.

Alexander, his wife, Kia, two-year-old old daughter, Ryleigh, and newborn son, Carter, reside in Redford, Mich.

Maki is a 1996 graduate of Wyandotte Mt. Carmel High School and holds a bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University.

The 2013 season marks the fifth season for aaron Hepner as a member of Jay Alexander’s staff.

Hepner took over as hitting coach for the 2012 season, when the team hit .268 collectively and drew a MAC-high 278 walks. Under Hepner’s guidance, Ben Magsig led the MAC in on-base per-centage (.478) and walks (53). Magsig’s walk total was the most for a single season in EMU history. Brent Ohrman also finished his final season in an EMU uniform with a .344 batting average more than 20 stolen bases for a second straight year.

In his first season with EMU, Hepner helped the EMU pitching staff develop into one of the top staffs in the MAC. Hepner helped EMU claimed three MAC Pitcher of the Week awards during the regular season, while helping pitcher Corey Chaffins earn second-team All-MAC accolades after coming off Tommy John sugery in 2008.

Hepner spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan, where the Wolverines posted a 131-54 record, including a 70-21 mark in the Big Ten Conference, while also claiming the conference’s regular season and tournament title in 2008.

In 2010, the EMU pitching staff had one of its best seasons, as the staff combined for six complete games and two shutouts, includ-ing an 11-inning complete game shutout by Kendall Lewis, who would go on to earn four national player of the week awards and first-team All-MAC accolades.

A three-year letterman at the University of Dayton, Hepner served as an assistant coach for the Southern Ohio Copperheads in the Great Lakes Collegiate Summer League in the summer of 2006 before heading to UM. Noted for his defense, Hepner made more than 150 starts at catcher while earning his three letters at Dayton (2003-05) and helped lead the Flyers to a school record 36 wins as a senior in 2005. A native of Woodinville, Wash., Hepner graduated from Woodinville High School in 2001. He graduated from Dayton with a degree in sports management in 2006, and served as a student assistant coach for one season.

Providing leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 64th year of ser-vice to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Confer-ence has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) confer-ences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 64-year history of the league in March of 2009. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. The league has grown its commitment to champion-ships by expanding to six its number of neutral site post season events – football (Detroit’s Ford Field), volleyball (Toledo’s SeaGate Centre), men’s and women’s basketball (Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akron’s Fires-tone Stadium) and baseball (Chillicothe’s VA Memorial Sta-dium). The MAC tied a league record in 2009 with five schools participating in bowl games – Bowling Green (Roady’s Hu-manitarian); Central Michigan (GMAC); Northern Illinois (International); Ohio (Little Caesar’s Pizza) and Temple (Ea-gleBank Bowl). This marked the second consecutive sea-son for the MAC to send five schools to bowl appearances and only the third time in conference history (2004, 2008, 2009). The 2009 season also witnessed Central Michigan ranked No. 23 in the AP poll and No. 24 in the USA Today coaches poll at the end of the season following a dramatic 44-41 2OT win over Troy in the GMAC Bowl. Two more MAC teams defeated Big Ten opponents during the regular sea-son as Central Michigan defeated Michigan State, 29-27 at East Lansing, Mich., while Northern Illinois rolled to a 28-21 win at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. For the first time in its 64-year history, the MAC will have five bowl relationships--three primary and two secondary--for the next four seasons (2010-2013). The three primary agreements are with the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (Detroit, Mich.), GMAC Bowl (Mobile, Ala.) and uDrove Humanitari-an Bowl (Boise, Ida.). In addition, the MAC has secured two secondary agreements over the next four years with the Papajohns.com Bowl (2010-2013), the Dallas Football Clas-sic (2010 and 2012) and the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl/San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl/New Mexico Bowl (2011 and 2013). The secondary agreement with the Papajohns.com Bowl (Birmingham, Ala.) will see the MAC serve as the back-up to both the SEC No. 8/9 and Big East No. 5/6 selections. The MAC will serve as the second back-up in the Dallas Football Classic in 2010 and 2012, a new bowl game played in the Cotton Bowl Stadium. The Dallas Football Classic’s primary agreements are Big Ten No. 7 vs. Big 12 No. 8. The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl/Poinsettia Bowl/New Mexico Bowl secondary agreement for 2011 and 2013 is as follows: the MAC will back-up Army in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (2011) and Poinsettia Bowl (2013) with the understanding that if Army is not bowl eligible, the West-ern Athletic Conference (WAC) will vacate the New Mexico Bowl and provide a team to the Kraft Fight Hunger and Poinsettia Bowl. The MAC will then provide a team to the New Mexico Bowl against a team from the Mountain West Conference (MWC). Several other milestones occurred in football last sea-

son. Central Michigan QB Dan LeFevour finished his ca-reer with three MAC Championships and four consecutive bowl appearances and completed his career with 150 total touchdowns--most in FBS history-- and is the MAC career leader in total offensive yards, passing yards, completions, attempts and passing touchdowns. Bowling Green WR Freddie Barnes led the country in receptions and was one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top wide receiver. Western Michigan QB Tim Hiller won the 2009 Wuerffel Trophy, better known as the Humanitarian Heisman, given annually to one foot-ball student-athlete that showed excellence athletically, academically and in giving back to the community. This past April, five MAC players were selected in the NFL Draft--Ohio WR Taylor Price (3rd round--New England); Central Michigan QB Dan LeFevour (6th round--Chicago); Buffalo RB James Starks (6th round--Green Bay); Central Michigan WR Antonio Brown (6th round--Pittsburgh); Kent State WR Jameson Konz (7th round--Seattle), and over 20 more were signed to free agent contracts. Finally the National Football Foundation recognized 13 MAC student-athletes to the 2010 Hampshire Honor Society with success both athletically and academically with a 3.20 GPA or better. In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC will enter the second year of its eight-year rights agreement (through 2016-2017 academic year) for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal is the most extensive in the 64-year history of the conference. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Champion-ship and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games. Akron continued its dominance in men’s soccer and was ranked No. 1 in the country through the entire year. The Zips won their 12th regular season championship and fell to Virginia in the NCAA College Cup Championship Game. Akron coach Caleb Porter was named National Coach of the Year for NCAA Division I. Akron striker Teal Bunbury re-ceived three honors, including the 2009 Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious honor in intercollegiate soccer, named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Player of the Year in Division I and Soccer America’s Player of the Year. Two Akron soccer players were selected in the top 10 of the MLS 2010 SuperDraft, including Bunbury (No. 4 overall to the Kansas City Wizards) and Blair Gavin (No. 10 overall to Chivas USA). Ohio’s men’s basketball team entered the MAC tour-nament as a No. 9 seed and defeated Akron in the MAC Championship game. The Bobcats went on and defeated No. 3 seed Georgetown in the opening round of the NCAA tournament before falling to Tennessee. Western Michigan made its fifth consecutive appearance to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament. In baseball, Kent State won the MAC championship, while Ball State had two players selected in the first two rounds of Major League Baseball’s 2010 Draft--Kolbrin Vitek (2B) first round (20th overall) to the Boston Red Sox and Perci Garner (RHP) second round (77th overall) to the Philadel-phia Phillies. Women’s athletics continued to shine for the MAC this past year. For the first time in MAC history five basketball teams were invited to postseason tournaments. Bowling Green won the MAC tourney and received the invitation to the NCAA tournament, while Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Toledo all were invited to the WNIT and Akron received an invite to the Women’s Basketball Invitational. In women’s soccer, Central Michigan won the MAC cham-pionship and defeated Purdue in its first NCAA tournament match in program history.
