EMU MEDIA PoLICIES AND SERVICES The EMU Athletic Media Relations Office offers a weekly release containing team and individual notes, statistics, reviews of past games and a look ahead to upcoming events. Additional information will include Mid-American Confer-ence rankings, statistics and league notes.

CREDENTIALS AND PARKING EMU does not issue credentials for wrestling, as the games ares free to the public. All media wishing to attend away games should contact the host institution regarding media policies. Parking for Scicluna Field can be found west of the field and will be limited to a first-come, first-serve basis. Media personnel will be responsible for their own parking arrangements.

INTERNET ACCESS There is currently wireless internet access within Bowen Field House. Media should make arrangements to obtain a wireless password with the Meida Relations staff prior to arrival.

INTERVIEWS Head Coach Derek DelPorto and his staff are available for interviews on an appointment-only basis after matches and practices. Personal interviews with coaches and players should be scheduled with EMU Athletic Media Relations. Individual players are available for interviews Monday-Thursday. Their availability will depend on practice and class schedules. Please give at least 24-hour advance notice so the players can be contacted and arrangements can be made. Home phone numbers for players and coaches will not be given out by the EMU Athletic Media Relations Office. The coaching staff and players will be available for post-game interviews following a short cooling-off period.

WoRLD WIDE WEB The media can access all the latest EMU wrestling news on the athletic department’s Web site, located at emueagles.com. The EMU Athletic Media Relations Office produces this Web site with the most up-to-date and extensive coverage of the Eagles. Following a season of ups and downs, a rejuvenated Eagles squad returns to the mat for the 2011-12 season with hopes of making a run at their first Mid-American Conference title since the 1995-96 campaign. Last year, EMU finished with an 11-11 overall record and was held winless in five Mid-American Conference matches, but several Eagles grapplers enjoyed individual success. Aaron Sulzer, who returns this season as a redshirt junior at 157 lbs., is coming off a third place showing at the MAC Championships and a pair of matches at the NCAA Championships. David Wade, who was lost to graduation, also received a bid to the national tournament and was just the eighth two-time national qualifier in the history of EMU wrestling. Also returning to the squad are Jared Germaine and Nick Whiten-burg, who cracked the national rankings last season in their respec-tive weight classes. Germaine was ranked as high as 30th at 125 lbs., while Whitenburg made it to 29th at 197 lbs. Whitenburg went 3-1 in MAC regular season bouts in 2010-11, and represented the team at the MAC Championships. The Eagles return eight-of-10 starters from a season ago and welcome eight freshmen into program whose roster consists of 23 underclassmen out of 32 wrestlers. The Green and White will be led by its seven seniors: Filiberto Colon, Lester France, Justin Joseph, Andrew Novak, Matt Pettigrew, Corey Phillips, and Wes Schroeder. In his first sea-son with the Eagles after transfer-ring from Rider University, Colon notched an 22-win season in 2010-11 which included a team-best 15 pins at 133 lbs. In the MAC preseason coaches poll, Eastern Michigan was picked to place fourth in the con-ference behind Kent State University, 10-time defending cham-pion Central Michigan University and Ohio University. Sixth-year Head Coach Derek DelPorto is never one to buy in to preseason rankings and believes his team is primed for a conference title run this season. “We encountered bad luck, too many injuries and conference disap-pointments last season,” said DelPorto. “This year, these guys have a huge chip on their shoulder because of that and they have worked relentlessly. I sincerely believe we have the talent to do something special this season.” Four Eagles also received top-four rankings in the preseason poll. Novak is tied for second at 133 lbs, Sulzer is tied for second at 157 lbs., redshirt junior Chris Eggert is second at 165 lbs., and redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph is ranked third at 184 lbs. The 2011-12 version of the Eagles features a deep roster unlike any the team has had for quite some time. Most notably is the return of Joseph, who missed the entire 2010-11 season due to injury. Joseph stormed onto the collegiate wrestling scene during his freshman year, winning 22 matches at 184 lbs. The Lapeer, Mich. native will almost certainly be a force at that weight class this season and will

be a key component at helping his team to its first MAC victory since 2009. Joining the EMU wrestling program this year will be Chris Rau (141 lbs.), Cole Dillman (heavyweight), Vincent Pizzuto (125 lbs.), Mike Haumesser (165 lbs.), Anthony Abro (197 lbs.), Justin Melick (149 lbs.), Aaron Risch (165 lbs.) and Michael Shaw (133 lbs.). “We have a great incoming class that has tons of potential”, said DelPorto. “They help us with some depth issues and strengthen our room tremendously.” Coach DelPorto also made an addition to his staff during the off-season, bringing in four-time national qualifier Luke Smith to coach the lighter weight classes. “Luke is a great addition to this program”, said DelPorto. “He is ex-actly what we needed to have a complete staff that now covers the lightweights, middleweights and upper-weights.” Dave Boylard returns for a fifth season as assistant coach as well.

Schedule After opening the season with the 20th Annual EMU Open, Nov. 5, the Eagles will make consecu-tive trips up to East Lansing, Mich., first for the MSU Open, Nov. 12, and then to take on the Spartans in the first dual meet of the sea-son, Nov. 18. The Green and White will remain on the road as the team heads to Troy, N.Y. for the Northeast Re-gional, Nov. 26. A Dec. 1 matchup with perennial non-conference foe Cleveland State University will wrap-up the early road swing as the Eagles return home to battle Ohio University, Dec. 4, at Bowen

in the first conference dual of the season. After a three-week hiatus in mid-

December, EMU will hit the road once again for the annual Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30. EMU will begin 2012 at the Pitt Duals, Jan. 7, where they will face the Virginia Military Institute, University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University. Eastern Michigan will return to Ypsilanti for three of the next four events including MAC duals against in-state rival Central Michigan, Jan. 13, and Northern Illinois University, Jan. 22. The Eagles will host the EMU Duals, Jan. 15, and bring in opponents Clarion University, Indiana Tech and the University of Indianapolis. On Jan. 19, EMU travels to down the road to face Olivet College. A trio of opponents, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Missouri University and Truman State University, await the Eagles at the SIU-Edwardsville Quad, Jan. 29. The dual season then concludes with a pair of MAC duals at Kent State, Feb. 5, and home to the University at Buffalo, Feb. 8. The regular season finishes with at the Edinboro Open, Feb. 11. This season’s MAC Championships will be held on the campus of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, March 4. The NCAA Championships will take place in St. Louis, Mo., March 15-17.

The 2011-12 season will mark the seventh year for Derek DelPorto as a head wrestling coach and sixth as the head man of the Eastern Michigan University wrestling program. Last season, Aaron Sulzer and Seth Schaner qualified for the NCAA Cham-pionships under DelPorto’s direction, making them sixth and seventh na-tional qualifiers during his tenure and the 41st and 42nd qualifiers in EMU history. He also recorded his 50th win at the helm of the EMU wrestling program against SIU-Edwardsville, 40-9. The 2009-10 season was highlighted by Sean Clair and David Wade qualify-ing for the NCAA Championships. Wade also became the first returning national qualifier EMU has had since 2004. Del-Porto’s squad also cracked the top-20 in the Academic Performance Rankings, tying Pittsburgh and Princeton with 971 points and ranking higher than any other MAC school. It was a new program best for EMU. The 2008-09 season was capped off with senior John McClure taking top honors at 197 lbs. at the Mid-American Conference Championships which EMU hosted. McClure went on to wrestle at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo., marking the third EMU grappler to compete nationally during DelPorto’s tenure. DelPorto led the Eagles to their best record in school history (15-8-1) in the 2007-08 campaign, which smashed its previous top mark of 12-9-1, set in the 1974-75 season. The Eagles also posted two Mid-American Conference victories against Ohio, 31-6, and Buffalo, 21-12.

Under DelPorto’s direction, Charlie Pi-enaar claimed second place at the MAC Championship, which earned him a spot in the NCAA Championships. In his first season, DelPorto led the Eagles to their first winning record since the 1990-91 campaign, posting an 8-7 mark. He also led the Green and White to only the second MAC dual victory in the past decade, a 28-10 home victory over Buffalo. At his first MAC champion-ship, two of DelPorto’s wrestlers com-peted for a weight class championship; Jermain Thompson at 149 lbs. and Tony Lyssiotis in the 197 lbs. class. Thompson would go on to win a MAC title, qualify-ing for the NCAA Tournament in Auburn Hills, Mich. DelPorto, a former All-American wrestler while a Slippery Rock under-graduate, returned to his alma mater as head coach for the 2004-05 season. DelPorto and his 2005-06 team made the most of the school’s final wrestling season, which was announced at the start of the year, winning the team championship at the NCAA Division I East Regional tournament and advanc-ing a tournament-record 10 wrestlers to weight-class championship final bouts while recording a school record-tying four individual titles. In addition, SRU sent a school-record five wrestlers to the 2006 NCAA Divi-sion I National Championship. For his efforts, DelPorto was named NCAA Division I East Regional Coach of the Year. His 2004-05 Slippery Rock squad was the NCAA East Regional runner-up, and had three NCAA Division I champi-onship qualifiers and three Academic All-Americans. DelPorto began his coaching career as

an assistant coach at Slippery Rock from 1999-2000 before moving on to the University of Oklahoma as an assistant from 2000-2002. From 2002-2004, Del-Porto was an assistant wrestling coach at Cornell University before returning to his alma mater to take over the head coaching duties in 2004. The 35-year-old DelPorto (4-10-76) grew up in Erie, Pa. and graduated from Cathedral Prep of Erie in 1994. DelPorto went on to wrestle as a collegian at Slippery Rock where he recorded the third-best record in school history at 116-38 in his four seasons. He earned NCAA All-American honors in 1999 in the heavyweight classification at the NCAA Division I championship. He was also a three-time East Regional cham-pion, winning the heavyweight titles in 1998 and 1999 and capturing the 177 lbs. crown in 1996. DelPorto also won the PSAC heavyweight title in 1998. DelPorto earned his degree in english education from Slippery Rock in 1999 before receiving his masters in sport management from Eastern Michigan in 2007.

The 2011-12 campaign marks Dave Bolyard’s fifth season in Ypsilanti as an assistant coach. A 2005 graduate of Cen-tral Michigan University, Bolyard was a four-time national qualifier, an All-American his junior year and a 2005 MAC champion at 165 lbs. As a senior he carded a 33-5 overall record and was ranked as high as second nationally in his final season. He won a school-record 21 straight matches during his senior campaign. Following his senior season, Bolyard won the Chick Sher-wood Award, presented annually to CMU’s most valuable wrestler. He ranks seventh all-time with 109 career wins and his 22 falls are tied for the 10th most in CMU history. He finished second at the MAC Championships each of the first three years of his collegiate career, and each time earned a wild card berth in the NCAA Championship. His best performance at nationals came as a junior in 2004, when he strung together four straight wins in the conso-lation bracket en route to receiving All-American honors. Bolyard also claimed a championship at the prestigious Midlands Tournament during his junior season. He was CMU’s first to win at Midlands since 1999. The 28 year-old Bolyard earned his degree in entrepre-neurship from CMU in 2005 and has a master’s degree in athletic administration.

The 2010-11 campaign marks Luke Smith’s first season as an assistant coach. Smith joins the EMU squad after spend-ing last season as a volunteer coach at Old Dominion Uni-versity and the 2009-10 campaign with the Chippewas. While at Old Dominion, Smith’s primary duties included coaching lightweight wrestlers. Smith also worked as a lightweight coach with CMU, where he helped guide the Chippewas to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Tournament in 2010. Smith brings a host of personal accolades, including qual-ifying for Nationals all four years at CMU. He was ranked as high as fourth in the country at 125 pounds. During his se-nior season, his team reached their highest ranking in pro-gram history when they ended the 2007-08 dual season at No. 2. He was the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year for the 2004-05 season. At Chippewa Falls High, Smith was a two-time Wiscon-sin State Champion and finished his career with a 117-2 record. He finished fourth at the Greco-Roman Olympic Trials in 2004 and also captured fourth place at the Senior Freestyle World Team Trials in 2006. The 27-year-old native of Chippewa Falls, Wis. is a 2008 graduate from CMU with a Bachelors Degree in Sports Management and Athletic Coaching.

Providing leadership in education and diver-sity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 65th year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and devel-oped into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 foot-ball Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth com-missioner in the 65-year history of the league in March of 2009. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. The league has grown its commitment to cham-pionships by expanding to six its number of neu-tral site post season events – football (Detroit’s Ford Field), volleyball (SPIRE Academy, Geneva, Ohio), men’s and women’s basketball (Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akron’s Firestone Stadium) and baseball (Avon, Ohio All Pro Freight Stadium). In 2010, four MAC football programs received bowl invitations and it marked the first time in conference history that the MAC had four or more teams receive bowl invitations in a three-year consecutive span. In addition, the MAC has sent four or more teams to bowl games in five of the last seven years. The four MAC programs that played in bowl games were: Miami (GoDaddy.com Bowl), Northern Illinois (uDrove Humanitar-ian Bowl), Toledo (Little Caesars Pizza Bowl) and Ohio (R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl). The MAC record for bowl appearances is five, which hap-pened in consecutive years (2008, 2009) and only three times (2004, 2008, 2009) in conference his-tory. The 2010 season also witnessed Miami win the 2010 Marathon MAC Championship and re-cord the best turnaround in college football with an eight win improvement over the previous sea-son (1-11 in 2009). Northern Illinois entered the Marathon MAC Football Championship ranked No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 24 in the Associated Press Poll. Two more MAC teams defeated Big Ten opponents during the regular season as Northern Illinois defeated Min-nesota, 34-23 in Minneapolis, while Toledo rolled to a 31-20 win at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. n 2010, the University of Akron Men’s Soccer team won its first National Championship by defeating Louisville, 1-0, in the NCAA College Cup. Akron junior defender Kofi Sarkodie was named Player of the Year by Soccer America, and Sarkodie was joined by senior midfielder Antho-ny Ampaipitakwong and junior striker Darlington Nagbe on Soccer America’s MVP First Team, as Ak-ron’s three honorees were the most by any school. In addition, Nagbe was presented the Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious honor in intercol-legiate soccer, as it marked the second consecu-tive year for a member of the Akron program to be honored with the Hermann Trophy (Teal Bun-bury, 2009). History was made in the 2011 Major League Soccer Super Draft as seven members of the Akron’s National Championship Men’s Soccer Team were drafted, including five of the first eight selections in the first round. This set an MLS draft record for the most first-round selections from a

single school. In 2010-11 for men’s basketball, the MAC set a conference mark as six programs received invites to postseason tournaments. Akron won the MAC tournament as the No. 6 seed and played Notre Dame in the NCAA tournament. Kent State won the MAC regular season title and represented the conference in the NIT with impressive road wins at St. Mary’s and Fairfield. Buffalo, Ohio and Western Michigan were invited to the CollegeIn-sider.com tournament, while Miami received an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational. Three freshmen were named to the Mid-Major Freshman All-America Team—Juwan Howard, Jr. (Western Michigan), Javon McCrea (Buffalo) and Trey Ziegler (Central Michigan), while Kent State junior Justin Green was named MAC Player of the Year and named All-America by three different organizations—named Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press, tabbed Mid-Major All-America by College Insider.com; and second team Mid-Major All-American by College Hoops.net. In wrestling, Central Michigan won its tenth consecutive MAC championship, while the MAC sent 23 wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wres-tling Championship as Kent State’s Dustin Kilg-ore won the NCAA national championship at the 197 weight class. In addition, four grapplers secured All-America honors--Central Michigan’s Scotti Sentes (133), Ben Bennett (174) and Jarod Trice (285), along with Kent State’s Dustin Kilgore (197). Buffalo won its first championship in men’s swimming and diving, while Kent State won its 19th MAC title in men’s golf and received its 24th NCAA appearance. Ball State made its seventh automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tourna-ment. In baseball, Kent State won the MAC champion-ship and lost to Texas in the NCAA Regional Final. A total of 17 MAC student-athletes were selected in Major League Baseball’s 2011 Draft—including Kent State LHP Andrew Chafin to the Arizona Dia-mondbacks as a compensatory first round pick, 43rd overall. Women’s athletics continued to shine for the MAC this past year. For the first time in MAC his-tory, six women’s basketball programs were in-vited to postseason tournaments. Bowling Green won the MAC tournament and received the invi-tation to the NCAA tournament, while four pro-

grams were invited to the WNIT—Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Central Michigan. In addition, Buffalo was invited to the Women’s Bas-ketball Invitational. Toledo’s women’s basketball program won the Women’s NIT, the first post-season championship in school history with wins over Delaware, Au-burn, Alabama, Syracuse, Charlotte and USC. In the WNIT Championship game, with a national television audience and sold out Savage Arena, Rocket junior Naama Shafir scored a career-high 40 points in the victory.

History of the MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has estab-lished historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter mem-bers. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, and 14th, UMass for football only (beginning in 2012). Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michi-gan University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competi-tive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980. For men, cham-pionships (11) are sponsored in football, basket-ball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.

Joel Smith was the second EMU wrestler to earn NCAA Division I All-America status. He did so by finishing fifth at 158 pounds at the 1989 NCAA Cham-pionships, the highest finish ever by an Eastern Michigan wrestler at the

Division I level. Smith was also the MAC Tournament Champion at 158 in 1989.

Lee Pritts entered the 1996 NCAA Championships as the Mid-American Conference champion at 118 pounds and emerged with a sixth-place finish and All-American honors. Pritts was also named the outstanding wrestler

of the MAC Championship while leading the squad to the 1996 MAC team title.

MIkE FEENEY1999 NCAA Division I


At the 1999 NCAA Championships in University Park, Pennsylvania, Mike Feeney was the lone EMU representa-tive. He made the most of it, finishing eighth to earn All-America honors. Feeney accomplished his deed amid two

obstacles. First, he lost his opening match and had to win three in a row to make All-America, which he did. Second, he wrestled the entire tournament with a badly injured knee. The injury became worse with each match. After his loss in the fifth round of consolations, Feeney was unable to wrestle and forfeited the seventh-place match. Feeney also qualified for the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Championships at 174.

Jerry Umin was the first EMU wrestler to ever earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion-ships, finishing seventh at 167 pounds. A transfer from Oakland University where he was a two-time Division II All-American, he was the Mid-American

Conference champion in 1987 and posted a 28-4 record overall.

Enrollment Profile With nearly 23,000 students, EMU provides a rich learning environment for the university community. The University currently has approximately 18,000 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students. Our students represent 45 states and 93 foreign coun-tries. Of undergraduate students, 72 percent are full time and 57 percent are women. The most popular majors are education, business, social sciences and history, science and engineering, English, and the health professions. EMU’s undergraduate population is approximately 65 percent white; 21 percent black; 2 percent international; 2.5 percent Asian-American; 2 percent Hispanic, 0.5 percent Native-American, and 7 percent not answered (i.e. elected not to respond to this inquiry). Eastern Michigan offers a number of special academic programs to help students succeed. These include the Honors College; the Holman Learn-ing Center; distance learning; accelerated format programs; online, weekend and evening programs and courses; American Humanics certification; the World College Study Abroad Tours; a specialized master’s degree program for corporations offered on site; a double master’s degree; online technologies for education and training through the Centers for Corporate Training; and EMU Worldwide. With more than 200 academic and social orga-nizations, an extensive intramural sports program, 21 NCAA Division I-A sports and numerous cultural activities from which to choose, EMU students have diverse opportunities to become involved in campus life. Students’ on-campus housing choices range from traditional dormitory-style rooms to apart-ments and include living/learning center options.

Where We’re Located Eastern Michigan University is located in historic Ypsilanti, seven miles east of Ann Arbor, 40 miles west of Detroit and just 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It is an area rich in academic, research, technological and recreational resources. The University also has sites in Livonia, Jackson, Traverse City, Flint, Detroit and Monroe. EMU’s 800 plus-acre main campus of scenic flora and wooded areas includes 18 miles of walkways and jogging trails and has 122 buildings throughout the academic and athletic campuses. Eagle Crest – Eastern Michigan’s conference center, golf course and resort – is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake. Recently named “A Cool City,” by Michigan’s Governor Jennifer Granholm, Ypsilanti plays a leading role in industry and education. The city and the University have forged close ties that have lasted 160 years.

What Makes Us Unique In 1849, with the passage of Act No. 138, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan formally paved the way for the establishment of Michigan State Normal School, with the exclu-sive purposes of instructing persons in the art of teaching; providing a good common school education; and giving instruction in the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and the laws of the United States. Since its inception, Eastern Michigan, first as a Normal School, then as a College and finally as a Uni-versity, has grown and developed to respond to the ever-changing needs of society. Over the years, EMU has educated thousands of sons and daughters of Michigan, the nation, and the world. The University currently serves nearly 22,000 students who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral and certificate degrees in the arts, sciences and professions. In all, more than 200 majors, minors and concentrations are delivered through the University’s Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Health and Human Services; Technology, and its graduate school. Eastern Michigan’s exceptional faculty, students and alumni include CEOs from major businesses; a National Student Teacher of the Year, National Teacher of the Year, numerous Fulbright Scholars and Milken Family Foundation National Educators award winners; and several Michigan Teachers of the Year. EMU is regularly recognized by national publications for its excellence, diversity, and commitment to applied education.

Faculty/Staff Eastern Michigan University employs 689 full-time faculty and 1,100 staff members. Ninety-four percent of EMU professors have doctoral degrees or terminal degrees in their field. The student to faculty ratio is 19:1. Faculty work closely with students, and many involve students in their research. In 2009, the Uni-versity celebrated its 29th annual Undergraduate Symposium; a benchmark program for undergradu-ate research.

Community outreach Eastern Michigan is making an impact nationally by channeling its academic research as a means of solving real-world problems. EMU currently has 14 research institutes and centers that focus on com-munity building and civic engagement, quality, com-munity and regional development, small business development, geospatial education, textiles, export assistance and product development. EMU is well known for merging theory and practice for the benefit of the community. Applied research leads to new knowledge, new jobs and new business. Annually, the university receives about $15 million in revenues for sponsored research and community service activities.

The Alumni Association Representing more than 142,000 alumni and friends, the Alumni Association sponsors social and service-related programs for more than 20 geographically-based and special-interest alumni chapters.

EMU’s Economic Impact Since its founding in 1849, Eastern Michigan has provided quality services to the residents of Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, the State of Michigan and other states and nations. EMU’s total impact on the Michigan economy of an estimated $3 billion annually reflects a return of more than $30 for each dollar received from the state. The University’s total impact on the Michigan economy results in a contribution of $115 million in state tax revenue. Thus, EMU’s impact on state government tax revenue is $1.25 in taxes for each dollar received from the state.

our History When the state of Michigan was just 12 years old, Michigan State Normal School was designated by the state legislature as the first institution to educate teachers to serve the public schools. The University thus began, somewhat humbly, as the sixth teacher education institution in the nation. A campus that today comprises more than 800 acres was once a four-acre plot with one building and two programs of study – a classical course and an English Course. The school’s name has changed several times – to Michigan State Normal College in 1899; to Eastern Michigan College in 1956; and finally to Eastern Michigan University in 1959. During its first 100 years, the institution certified thousands of teachers and developed the broad-based curricula that ultimately prepared it for university status. Within that new university, three colleges emerged: Education, Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School. The University has since expanded three more times; adding the College of Business in 1964, the College of Health and Human Services in 1975 and the College of Technology in 1980. More recently Eastern Michigan has developed Extended Programs that include Continuing Education, the Centers for Corporate Training, the World College and numerous community-focused institutes. The University has enhanced its learning environment through structural initiatives during the past sev-eral years. Recent construction includes the Terrestrial and Aquatic Research Facility (1998), the Convocation Center (1998), the Bruce T. Halle Library (1998), the John W. Porter College of Education Building (1999), the Everett L. The City of Ypsilanti Ypsilanti is a city in Washtenaw County with a population of 22,362. Originally a trading post estab-lished in 1809 by Gabriel Godfroy, a French-Canadian fur trader from Montreal, a permanent settlement was established on the east side of the Huron River in 1823 by Major Thomas Woodruff. It was incorporated into the Territory of Michigan as the village Woodruff’s Grove. A separate community a short distance away on the west side of the river was established in 1825 under the name “Ypsilanti”, after Demetrius Ypsilanti, a hero in the Greek War of Independence. Woodruff’s Grove changed its name to Ypsilanti in 1829, and the two communities eventually merged. Henry Ford and the automotive industry came to Yp-silanti in the 1930s and beautiful Ford Lake was created to generate hydroelectric power for the manufacturing plants. During World War II, Ypsilanti became home to the Willow Run Bomber Plant, a factory that would employ 100,000 workers.

Facilities Our 803-acre campus of scenic flora and wooded areas includes 18 miles of walkways and jogging trails, and has 128 buildings, the Lake House and Rynearson Stadium located on the south side of Huron River. Eagle Crest – our conference center, golf course and resort – is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake. Most recent additions include the Terrestrial and Aquatic Research Facility (1998); the Convocation Center (1998); the Bruce T. Halle Library (1998); the John W. Porter Building, housing the College of Educa-tion (1999); the environmentally sustainable Everett L. Entering her fourth year as the pres-ident of Eastern Michigan University, Dr. Susan W. Martin has made a sig-nificant impact on the campus in her short time in Ypsilanti. Named the 22nd president of EMU May 14, 2008, she is the first female president in EMU’s 161-year history. Martin officially took office July 7, 2008. Since joining EMU she has led the institution in two consecutive years of enrollment growth, kept tuition, room and board at 0% increase for 2010-11, enhanced the quality of education by investing in hiring new faculty, and enhanced the living and learning fa-cilities by making $195M in capital im-provements to the campus. “I am thrilled to be chosen for the honor of leading this great University, which has a strong history of excellent education and a bright future,” said Martin. During her inaugural address Martin set fourth an ambitious vision for the

university. The goals included building on the pillars of aca-demic excellence, refreshing alumni relationships, com-prehensive fundraising and earning the public’s trust. Under Martin’s guidance in 2008, EMU was again rec-ognized as a “Best Midwest-ern College” by ThePrincetonReview for the sixth straight year. Additionally, for the fifth consecutive year, ThePrinceton Review recognized Eastern’s College of Business as one of the “Best 296 Busi-ness Schools” in the nation. Eastern Michigan also was awarded a 2009 Michigan Historic Preservation Net-work’s (MHPN) Government/Institutional Award for its preservation of the Univer-sity’s core historic campus. Prior to coming to EMU, Martin was the provost and vice-chancellor of academic

affairs at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The majority of Martin’s higher edu-cation career was at Grand Valley State University, where she taught and pub-lished as a professor of accounting and taxation. Martin served as director of the master of taxation program, director of international business programs, and chair of the accounting and taxation de-

partment. In June 2001, Martin joined the GVSU provost’s office and served in roles as assistant, associate, and executive asso-ciate vice president of academic affairs. One of her major duties in that office was to help manage the $154 million budget for the Academic Affairs Division. Before GVSU, Martin was deputy state treasurer for the Bureau of Local Govern-ment Services for Michigan from June 1981-June 1984. She also was the com-missioner of revenue for the state of Michigan from 1985-1988. Martin received her doctoral degree in accounting from Michigan State Uni-versity in 1988 and her master’s degree in accounting from MSU in 1976. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Cen-tral Michigan University in 1971. In 2009, Martin received the MSU De-partment of Accounting and Informa-tion Systems Alumna of the Year Award. Martin is a member of the boards of directors of the Michigan Educational Trust as well as Ann Arbor SPARK, a non-profit organization that seeks to bring businesses to the Ann Arbor area. She is married to Dr. Larry Martin, pro-fessor of economics at Michigan State University, and has three children and two grandchildren.

Roy E. Wilbanks Chair Roy E. Wilbanks was appointed to the Board of Regents by Governor Granholm in December 2004 to fill the seat vacated by Rosalind E. Griffin for a term ending in December 2012. Wilbanks was employed by Eastern Michigan University in various roles such as: Assistant to the President for Government and Community Relations, Vice Presi-dent for University Relations and Secretary to the Board of Regents, Executive Vice President, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Michigan Foundation and President and Chief Executive Officer of the

Eastern Michigan Foundation. In 2004, he was inducted into the Ypsilanti High School Athletic Hall of Fame and, in 2003, he was awarded the John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award. Wilbanks earned a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. Wilbanks serves as chair of the Eagle Administrative Services Board and is a resident of Ypsilanti.

Thomas W. Sidlik Thomas W. Sidlik was appointed to the Board of Regents of Eastern Michi-gan University by Governor Granholm in December 2004 to a term expir-ing in December 2012. He was elected by the Board as EMU’s Vice-Chair from June 2005 to January 2007. In January 2007, he was elected to be the Chair of the EMU Board of Regents, for a term ending in February 2009. He has served as the Chair of the EMU Educational Policies Committee since January 2007. In March 2009 he was appointed to be the vice chair of the Faculty Affairs committee. He is a member of the Finance, Audit and Investment committee and the Executive committee. In other capacities, he is also a member of the Board of Directors of The Detroit Institute of

Arts. Sidlik retired as a member of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG in August 2007. Sidlik has been vice chairman of the National Minority Supplier Development Council and Chairman of the Council’s Executive Committee. Sidlik is a resident of Ann Arbor.

Floyd Clack Floyd Clack was appointed by Governor Granholm in June 2005 to fill the seat vacated by Steven G. Gordon, and then reappointed to a full term in January of 2007. Clack was a member of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners (District 2) from 1996-2004 and is a former state represen-tative, serving seven terms from 1982 – 1996. He also served as a member of the Flint City Council from 1979 – 1982 and was a guidance counselor and teacher in the Flint Community Schools. He is a former president of the Flint NAACP. Clack received a master’s degree in counseling from EMU in 1972. He lives in Flint. Clack serves as vice chair of the Student Affairs

committee, vice chair of the Athletic Affairs committee and secretary of the Eagle Administrative Services Board.

Beth FitzsimmonsBeth Fitzsimmons was appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in February 2011 to replace Mohamed Okdie, who resigned. She is appointed for a term ex-piring Dec. 31, 2016. She serves as chair of the Student Affairs committee. Dr. Fitzsimmons founded Information Strategists, LLC, in 1987, a company that provides information services for high tech companies. Clients include scientists, engineers, marketing specialists and executives of major U.S. cor-porations. From 2003-2008, she was appointed by the President and chaired the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS). From 1996-1999, Dr. Fitzsimmons was involved with several projects at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to that, she was associated with

CENDI; an Executive Branch interagency working group composed of the scientific and technical (STI) managers from the Departments of Commerce, Energy, Defense, Health and Human Services, and NASA. Dr. Fitzsimmons served as the information specialist for 10 years at Aerodyne Research, Inc., and also has served as the Chairman of the Depository Library Council to the U.S. Public Printer (1993-94) and received the Public Printer’s Distinguished Service Award. She is the current President of the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor, the largest Rotary Club in Michigan, and has served on the Boards of the YMCA, University of Michigan Libraries, HelpSource, First Congregational Church, Cleary Uni-versity, Library of Michigan Foundation, and MIT Enterprise Forum.Michael Hawks

Michael Hawks was appointed by Governor Snyder in February 2011 to replace Phil Incarnati, whose term had expired. He is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2018. He serves as chair of the Athletic Affairs committee and vice chair of the Finance, Audit and Investment committee. Hawks was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and grew up in Ypsilanti Township. He graduated from Ypsilanti High School where he excelled in football and re-ceived a full athletic-scholarship from Eastern Michigan University. Hawks earned a varsity letter as a true freshman and went on to be the team’s starting Noseguard the next three seasons. While at EMU, he earned a BA

in Business Administration and subsequently earned a MA in Higher Education Administration from Michigan State University. After completing his Higher Education, he served as Chief of Staff for the Majority Floor Leader in the Michigan House of Representatives and on the Staff of the Speaker of the House. He currently serves as a director of Governmental Consultant Services Inc. (GCSI) in Lansing, Michigan. GCSI is a multi-client Lobbying firm that is consistently recognized as Michigan’s number one rated firm. Hawks individually has consistently been voted among the 10 best lobbyists in the state by independent political surveys of Capitol insiders.

James F. Stapleton Jim Stapleton was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm in January of 2007 to replace Karen Valvo, who resigned. Stapleton was reappointed by Governor Granholm in January 2009 to his own eight-year term that ex-pires December 31, 2016. He is currently a member of the Board’s Executive committee (in the capacity of chair of the Finance, Audit and Investment committee). He is vice chair of the Eagle Administrative Services board. Stapleton is President and CEO of B&R Consultants. From 2001 through July of 2004 (while continuing to fully own and operate B&R), Stapleton assumed the responsibilities of Senior Vice President of Business Affairs of the Detroit Tigers, making him (for a good majority of his tenure) the high-

est ranking African-American within the business operations of a Major League Baseball franchise. In July of 2004, Stapleton left Major League Baseball to participate in a group that, in June of 2005, purchased the Minnesota Vikings. He is the former president of The Think Twice Foundation, an or-ganization comprised of African and Jewish American Community Leaders that raised more than $1 million and provided more than 200 units of new and/or refurbished housing for Detroit residents. He is also a past chairman of the Detroit Chapter of the Urban League. Stapleton has also served on several profit and not-for-profit boards, including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Wayne State University’s Shiffman Medical Library Board of Visitors, Ontario Michigan Rail, and the Board of Directors of Detroit Commerce Bank.

Francine Parker Vice Chair Francine Parker was appointed by Governor Granholm in January 2007 to replace Joseph Antonini, whose term expired in December 2006. Parker is the Executive Director of the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust, which provides health care benefits to UAW retirees. Parker, who has more than 40 years of healthcare experience, retired as president and CEO of Health Alliance Plan in 2008. She serves as chair of the Personnel and Compensa-tion committee, chair of the Faculty Affairs committee and vice chair of the Educational Policies committee. She is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 2014.

Mike Morris Mike Morris was appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in February 2011 to replace Gary Hawks, whose term had expired. He is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2018. He is chairman and chief executive officer of American Electric Power (AEP). From 1997 to 2003, Morris was chairman, president and CEO of Northeast Utilities System. Before joining North-east Utilities, he was president and CEO of Consumers Energy, principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, and president of CMS Marketing, Services and Trading. He was previously president of Colorado Interstate Gas Co. and executive vice president of marketing, transportation and gas supply for

ANR Pipeline Co., both subsidiaries of El Paso Energy. Morris was the founder and president of ANR Gathering Co., one of the first gas marketing companies in the United States. Morris is past chairman of the Edison Electric Institute, Institute of Nuclear Power Operations and Nuclear Electric Insurance Limited. He also serves on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Electricity Advisory Board, the National Governors Association’s Task Force on Electricity Infrastructure, Business Roundtable (chairing the Business Roundtable’s Sustainable Growth Initiative). He serves as a director of the boards of Alcoa, Battelle and The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. Morris graduated from Eastern Michigan University with both bachelors and masters degrees in biology. He served on the Board of Regents at Eastern Michigan University from 1997-2004. He is currently serving a new term through 2018. In 1995 he received the university’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. During his graduate years, he was commander of the ROTC Brigade. Morris received a law degree, cum laude, from the Detroit College of Law and is a member of the Michigan Bar Association.

The Board of Regents is the governing body of Eastern Michigan University. Its current format was created when the State of Michi-gan ratified a new constitution, Jan. 6, 1964. The Board comprises eight regents who are appointed to eight-year terms by the gov-ernor. Dr. Derrick GraggAthletics Director

The mark of an exceptional athletics program is the progress that is made each year. And under the leadership of Athletics Director Dr. Derrick Gragg, the Eastern Michigan University department of athletics has turned in successful campaigns in each of his first five years at the helm. During Gragg’s first year at EMU in 2006-07, the department set a school and Mid-American Conference record by capturing a remarkable eight team conference titles, adding a league post-season crown and recording two runner-up finishes. The MAC-record eight team champion-ships eclipsed the mark of six held jointly by Central Michigan University (2003-04) and Western Michigan University (1984-85). In 2007-08, Gragg’s second as athletics di-rector, EMU followed up the record-breaking eight championships in 2006-07 with four league regular-season titles and one MAC Tournament crown and the Eagles secured the Reese Trophy which is awarded annually to the top overall men’s athletics program in the league. Eastern had won the prestigious Reese Trophy three previous times (1987-88, 1990-91 and 1995-96). Gragg was nationally recognized for his leadership in 2008-09, earning the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Adminis-trator of the Year Award. He received the award at the BCA National Convention and Expo Awards Banquet, May 29, 2009, in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Eagles won a pair of MAC titles dur-ing the 2008-09 campaign in men’s cross country and swimming, while finishing as the runner-up in men’s golf, men’s indoor track, men’s outdoor track, women’s golf and women’s soccer en route to a second place finish in the Reese Trophy standings. Eastern continued to excel in 2009-10 with a trio of MAC team titles, 30 individual MAC Championships and 60 student-athletes named to the All-MAC teams. Gragg also helped spearhead the construction of EMU’s $3.9 million multi-purpose indoor athletic practice facility located near the north end of Rynearson Stadium. The 2010-11 season proved to be another record-setting campaign for EMU Athletics. The women’s outdoor track and field team won its first MAC title in 11 years to go along with the men’s cross country team capturing its 15th MAC crown. The Eagles finished near the top in the battle for the Mid-American Conference all-sports championships. The women’s athletic program turned in a third-place showing in the race for the Jacoby Trophy, while the men’s athletic program turned in its fifth consecutive top five finish in the battle for the Reese Trophy. Gragg was named EMU’s 11th athletic director, Feb. 21, 2006, after spending the previous six years at the University of Arkan-sas. He first joined the U of A in 2000 as an as-sociate athletic director and was promoted to senior associate athletic director in 2003 and then to deputy athletic director. In his

tenure at Arkansas, Gragg was involved in various areas including: athletic administra-tion, sport program oversight, marketing, sports information, recruitment, budget, student-athlete support, compliance, facili-ties and game management, fund-raising and research. During his career, Gragg has published several articles and editorials on intercolle-giate athletics as well as a nationwide study on sports-related gambling. He is a former member of the NCAA’s Minority Opportuni-ties & Interests Committee, having served as co-chair of the committee in 2004-05. Gragg also served as a member of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas Board of Directors and as a member of the American Heart Association, Northwest Arkansas Board of Directors. He currently serves as a member of the NCAA’s Legislative Council and is a member of the NACDA Division I-A Athletic Directors Scholarship Ad Hoc Steer-ing Committee. A former collegiate football wide receiver, Gragg lettered four years at Vanderbilt while earning his degree. He graduated with a bachelor’s in human development in 1992 and was a member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll during his senior year. Gragg served from 1993 to 1995 as an academic counselor at his alma mater before adding the title of director of student life in his final year at Vanderbilt. sing the academic counseling programs for student-athletes. In 1995, Gragg was named director of compliance & operations at the University of Missouri. During his two years in Columbia, he was the game event manager for 10 Olympic sports programs and chairman of the Big 12 Compliance Coordinators Group during his last year as compliance coordinator at the university. Named assistant athletic director for compliance at Michigan in 1997, Gragg spent three years with oversight of the UM compliance department. While serving in Ann Arbor, Gragg also earned his master’s degree in sports admin-istration from Wayne State University. He then served on the faculty at WSU, teach-ing intercollegiate sport administration and sports marketing classes. During the past three years, he has also served as an adjunct faculty instructor at both WSU and EMU. Gragg earned his doctorate in higher education administration from the U of A in May of 2004 and also taught two under-graduate courses during his tenure there as an athletic administrator. Inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County (Ala.) Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, Gragg is a member of the National Asso-ciation of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Black Coaches and Admin-istrators Association (BCA). Dr. Elizabeth Ann (Liz) Broughton, a professor in leadership and counseling at Eastern Michigan University, was named faculty athletics representative at EMU in January 2007.

As the faculty athletics representative, Broughton is responsible for reviewing policies and procedures concerning

student-athlete welfare, academic integrity and rules compliance. She also serves on the Mid-American Conference’s FAR Infractions Committee. Broughton has been an EMU professor in leadership and coun-

seling in the College of Education since August 1997. Her duties include instruction of graduate level courses at EMU and serving on the EMU Faculty Council. The 57-year-old Broughton is a native of Morristown, N.J. She went on to complete her bachelor’s degree in 1976 at Rollins (Fla.) College where she was a varsity tennis and basketball player. She earned her master’s degree in counseling at the University of Florida in 1985 and completed her Doctor of Education degree at the University of Florida in 1996. Broughton played professional tennis from 1976-77 before tak-ing over as head women’s tennis coach at the University of Florida from 1978-81.

Erin Burdis is in her 10th year as a full-time member of the Eastern Michigan University athletics department. Burdis joined the EMU staff as a part-time academic counselor in 2001-02 and was elevated to full-time academic counselor and assistant to the director of compliance in October 2002. In the spring of 2004 she took over leadership of the program.

As the director of the Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS), Burdis has developed a comprehensive learning assistance program which has led to a very successful departmental GPA and increased graduation rates. Currently the department has a cumulative GPA of 3.138. The main component of the comprehensive program consists of mentor, learning specialist and tutoring meetings that are all individualized. The 35-year-old Burdis joined the EMU athletics staff at the start of the 2001 academic year after serving as a graduate assistant in the University

of Kentucky Athletics Department during 2000-01. She was a support desk coordinator at Booth Newspapers in Ann Arbor from 1997-2000 and prior to that was an intern in the athletics department and assistant girls varsity basketball coach at Taylor Light and Life Christian High School in Taylor, Mich. in 1998. A native of Frankenmuth, Mich., Burdis was an all-state softball player and played on state championships teams in softball and basketball at Frankenmuth High School before graduating in 1994. Burdis then went on to Concordia University in Ann Arbor and was an honorable mention All-American shortstop as a senior and the co-captain of the softball team her final two years. She helped lead Concordia to the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship in both 1998 and 1999. In addition, the softball team won the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference title in 1997 and 1999 and Burdis was named All-League shortstop and was an All-League All-Academic pick three times (1997, 1998, 1999).

Garrett Hotchkiss is in his fifth year as an Academic Counselor for the athletic de-partment at Eastern Michigan University. Hotchkiss joined the Student Athlete Sup-port Services staff full time in 2007 after spending 2006 as a Compliance Assistant and Learning Specialist within the EMU athletic department.

Hotchkiss then went on to play two years of college soccer at Adrian College where he received MIAA honorable mention both years. The 33-year-old Hotchkiss earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Central Michigan University in 2001. He completed his master’s degree in sports administration from Xavier University in 2005. Prior to his time here at EMU, Hotchkiss worked as a Research As-sistant in the Government Affairs office in Washington D.C. for Corning Incorporated. He also worked as a Game Day Operations Coordinator at the University of Cincinnati and Graduate Assistant for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio, during his time as a graduate student.

Christopher Hoppe is in his first year as the associate athletic director for compliance for the Eastern Michigan University athletic department. The 32-year-old Hoppe earned two degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is currently working on a third. He completed his undergraduate degree, with honors, in English literature in 2000 and

earned his Juris Doctorate in the spring of 2003. Hoppe has also been working on a Ph.D in postsecondary education and leadership at UW. A native of Rhinelander, Wisc., Hoppe began his professional career

In 2006, Hoppe joined the San Diego State University Aztecs as a student-athlete eligibility/student services coordinator. From San Diego State, Hoppe was named the assistant athletics direc-tor for compliance and sport supervisor at Robert Morris University in 2008, a post he held until joining EMU in the summer of 2011. A member of the state bar of Wisconsin, Hoppe and his wife, Meris, have two children, Austin and Isabelle.

Steve Nordwall is in his 10th year as the director of sports medicine/head athletic trainer for the Eastern Michigan University athletic department.

Nordwall joined the EMU staff after spend-ing the previous five years as an assistant trainer for the Kent State University athletic program.

At Kent State, Nordwall worked with the entire intercollegiate sports program and held direct responsibilities with the football and men’s basketball teams. He also served as a certified clinical instructor in the athletic training education program. A native of Minnetonka, Minn., Nordwall graduated from Minnehaha Academy in 1986. He went on to complete his undergraduate degree at North Park College in Chicago, Ill. in 1990, and followed that with his

master’s degree at Western Michigan University in 1996. From 1991-94 Nordwall was the head athletic trainer at Triton College in River Grove, Ill. He then moved on to Western Michigan University as a graduate assistant athletic trainer from 1994-96, followed by a position at the University of Notre Dame as an assistant athletic trainer during the 1996-97 season. He joined the Kent State University staff in 1997 as an assistant athletic trainer and remained there until accepting the EMU position. Nordwall is a certified athletic trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association and the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society. Nordwall is also an executive board member of the Athletic Medical Trainers Society as well as the District IV representative to the College/___ Athletic Trainers Committee for the past three years.

Mike Malach is in his 14th year as a member of the Eastern Michigan University athletics department and his fifth as the director of internal affairs.

The 43-year-old Malach joined the EMU staff in September 1998 after a two-year stint as athletics business manager at Southeast Missouri State University. He was responsible for the development and

control of the entire athletics budget at Southeast Missouri and he assumed the same responsibilities at Eastern, as well as, overseeing facilities, game operations and sports oversight. A 1990 graduate of Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisc., Malach

went on to earn a master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1992. After completing his M.A., he joined the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as an assistant athletics director from 1992-95. Malach then became a systems engineer with Office Technology Company in March 1995 before moving to Cape Girardeau, Mo., as a member of the Southeast Missouri staff in January 1996. A native of Denmark, Wisc., Malach attended Denmark High School and was a member of the 1985 boys basketball team that won the Class B state championship. He also participated in baseball and football as a prep. Malach lives in Milan, Mich. with his wife, Joan, and their son, Brevin (13) and daughter, Elaina (5).

Dr. Michael Paciorek, a professor of physical education in the EMU College of Health and Hu-man Services joined the Office of Compliance in January 2006 as Faculty Compliance Associate.

Paciorek is a 1975 graduate of St. Bonaventure University where he received a B.S. in physical edu-cation. He received a Master’s degree in adapted physical education from The George Washington University in 1977 and a Ph.D. from Peabody Col-lege of Vanderbilt University in 1981.

He taught adapted physical education in the Norfolk (Va.) City Schools from 1976-1979, and holds national certification in adapted physical education. Pacio-rek is known for his work in the field of disability sport having been on the Board of Directors for Special Olympics Michigan for 12 years. He was a member of the United States Disabled Sports Team that competed in the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona, Spain and worked in classification at the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta. He was on the evaluation team for the 1995 Special Olympic World Games and was Co-Coordinator for disabled athlete participation at the 1990 and 1991

U.S. Olympic Festivals in Minneapolis and Los Angeles respectively. Additionally, he spent 14 years in the United States Army Reserves rising to the rank of Major. Paciorek has written extensively in professional journals and his book “Disability Sports & Recreation is in its Third Edition. Since arriving at Eastern Michigan in 1981 Paciorek was the Physical Education Program Coordinator while teaching classes in adapted physical education, motor learning and development and disability sport. In 1999, he served as the President of the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPER&D). While at EMU he has received the Eastern Michigan University Distinguished Faculty Award for Service in 2000 and the EMU Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award in 1994. Professionally, he has received the MAHPER&D Distinguished Honor Award in 2005; the National Consortium on Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities Outstanding Service Award in 1999; and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance; Adapted Physical Activity Council Professional Recognition Award in 1999. Ann Pierson is in her ninth year as an academic counselor for the athletics department at Eastern Michigan Uni-versity.

Pierson joined the SASS staff after spending six years as an assistant coach for the EMU softball team.

Pierson earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks managements with an emphasis in thera-peutic recreation from Central Michigan University in 1987. She earned her master’s degree in sports management from EMU in 2011.

While an undergrad at CMU, Pierson helped CMU win two Mid-American Conference softball championship (1983 and 1986) and one league basketball title (1982-83). She played on CMU softball teams that qualified for three NCAA regional appearances. A native of Ann Arbor, Pierson lettered in basketball and softball at Gabriel Richard High School. She helped the softball team win the state of Michigan Class D championship as a freshman and senior and was named All-State as a senior. A two-time Class D All-State selection in basketball, Pierson led the team to the Class D state championship game in her final season. Pierson and her son, Brian (17) reside in Ypsilanti.

Dr. Melody Reifel Werner is in her 15th year as a member of the Eastern Michigan University staff.

The 54-year-old Reifel Werner has earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees with honors from Eastern Michigan Univer-sity. She completed her bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications in 1979 and her master’s in organizational commu-

nications in 1998. She was awarded her doctoral degree in educational leadership at EMU in 2006. Reifel Werner is the author of Protecting Uni-versity Integrity: Managing Risks in Intercollegiate Athletics. Reifel Werner is one of only 10 athletic administrators from all three NCAA Divisions to participate in the current class of the NCAA Pathway Program, formerly known as the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development

Prior to Reifel Werner’s work as a training consultant, she worked as an accounts manager and sales trainer for GTE in both Muskegon, Mich., and Ft. Wayne, Ind. She is the current Chair of the NCAA Research Committee and a for-mer member of the executive committee of the National Association of Athletics Compliance (NAAC). She serves on the Advisory Board to the “College Athletics and the Law” publication, which provided guidance on athletics laws and regulations. Reifel Werner is married to Thomas Werner and has two grown sons: Thomas Joseph and Anthony John.

Greg Pyszczynski, a 2008 graduate of Saint John Fisher College, has joined the Eastern Michigan University Sports Per-formance Staff as a graduate assistant. The 26-year-old Pyszczynski (12-11-84) joined the EMU Sports Performance Staff in June 2009 as an intern and worked his way into a graduate assistant position.

Prior to joining the EMU staff, Pyszczynski was the volunteer head strength and conditioning coach and a graduate assistant football coach at Utica (N.Y.) College in 2008-09. While at Utica, he also supervised the stength and conditioning for the men’s

In the 2007-08 year he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach and assistant defensive line coach for the football team at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Pyszczynski was the captain of the wrestling and football teams and also played lacrosse at West Seneca East High School. After graduating from high school in 2003, he went on to captain the St. John Fisher College football team while earning first-team Empire 8 All-Conference honors and helping lead the team to two NCAA post-season tournament appearances and a Final Four spot, in 2006.

Jay Sofen is in his fifth year at Eastern Michigan University and his third as the head equipment manager.

He previously served as EMU’s assistant equipment manager from 2007-08 as well as spending the 2008-09 season as the acting equipment manager.

A native of Plymouth, Mich., Sofen completed his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations at EMU in 2006. As an undergraduate he served as an operations volunteer at the 2004 and 2005 Mid-American Conference Football Championship games. He also served as an operations volunteer at the 2005 U.S. Open Golf Championship in Pinehurst, N.C. Sofen is a certified member of the Athletic Equipment Manag-ers Association (AEMA). He was also selected as a member of the 2011 McDavid National Advisory staff.

Greg Steiner is in his 11th year with the Eastern Michigan University Athletic Media Relations Office and his seventh as the as-sistant director.

He will serve as the primary contact for the football women’s basketball and golf teams, while aiding in game-day help with nearly all 21sports.

During his tenure in Ypsilanti, Steiner has promoted two Academic All-Americans, worked with six Mid-American Conference championship teams and instituted an aggressive approach to web development to provide better online coverage of Eagle athletic events. In addition, he has worked as an announcer for radio and television broadcasts of EMU sporting events, and he was part of the media relations staff at the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional and the 2009 Final Four

in Detroit, Mich. The 30-year-old Steiner worked as a student athletic media relations director at Eastern Michigan for three years. A 2003 graduate of EMU, he graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. During his tenure as a student assistant, Steiner was responsible for the development of the athletics department Web site, as well as most of the office’s publications. Steiner worked four years (2001-2005) for WOHL television in Lima, Ohio, as videographer and co-host of “The Friday Night Frenzy” and “The Ottawa Oil Pre-Game Show”, a local high school sports show. He completed an internship at Bluffton University during the summer of 2002, where he assisted with the day-to-day operations of the sports information office. A native of Bluffton, Ohio, Steiner graduated from Bluffton High School in 1999. He is a member of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the MAC News Media Association (MNMA).

Jim Streeter is in his 38th year with the Eastern Michigan University Athletic Media Realtions Office, 37 of them as the director.

A 2004 inductee into the EMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004, the 63-year-old Streeter earned a bachelor’s degree from EMU in Dec. 1973, with a major in physical educa-tion and minors in journalism and history. He was sports editor of the student news-

paper, TheEasternEcho, for two years. After serving a two-year stint as a sportswriter for TheYpsilantiPress, Streeter joined EMU as an assistant sports information director in 1974. He was named SID in August 1975. Streeter is a member of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and was a member of the publications committee for

four years. He was the secretary of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters and Writers Association (DSBWA) from 1990-94 after serving as vice president for one year. Additionally, in 2007 he received the honor of “Best of the Best” from the DSBWA. Streeter was selected as one of nine Media Marshals for the 2004 Ryder Cup Golf competition at Oakland Hills Country Club. In addition, he was part of the media relations staff at the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional and the 2009 Final Four in Detroit, Mich. A native of Albion, Mich., Streeter graduated from Albion High School in 1966. He earned two varsity letters in baseball and two in basketball at Albion High. He served as president of the Varsity Club his senior year and vice-president of the junior and senior classes. Streeter and his wife, Mary, live in Ypsilanti and have three sons: An-drew (34), twins Michael and David (32), two granddaughters, Isabel (12) and Annaliese (8) and one grandson, Avery (5).

Bill Tuscany is in his 26th year as a member of the Eastern Michigan Univer-sity sports medicine staff, having been promoted to associate head athletic trainer in September 2001. In addition, Tuscany serves as a lecturer and clinical instructor in EMU’s accredited athletic training curriculum.

A 1973 Eastern Michigan University graduate, Tuscany earned his master’s degree from EMU in 1976. Before joining the EMU athletics department, Tuscany was the

head athletics trainer at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., from 1976-86. In addition to his training duties at Lewis, Tuscany was the director of the Emergency Medical Service, an associate professor in physical education and from 1981-86 he was the chairman of the physical education department. Tuscany is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and a licensed Athletic Trainer by the State of Michigan. The 60-year-old Tuscany and his wife, Carol, have a daughter, Sarah (29).

Blair Wagner is entering his second year at Eastern Michigan University, and the first as the as head sports performance coach.

An assistant strength and conditioning coach at The Citadel from 2007-10, the 26-year-old Wagner worked directly with the basketball and wrestling programs, while assisting with the Bulldogs football and baseball teams. He was first appointed

in December 2007 after spending the fall with the College of Charleston in a similar position. While with the Cougars, he was responsible for the men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming/diving and men’s and women’s track and field teams. In addition, he assisted with men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.

Blair WagnerHead Sports Performance Coach

In October 2007, Wagner had the privilege of assisting with the train-ing of the NBA’s New York Knicks during their preseason camp. Prior to arriving in Charleston, S.C., Wagner spent a short time as a volunteer strength coach at the University of Nebraska Kearney. Wagner attended the University of Wyoming and obtained his bach-elor’s degree in exercise science in kinesiology while working primarily with the UW Football and strength and conditioning programs. Blair is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a sports performance coach certified through the United States Weightlifting Association and a connective exercise specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., Wagner completed his master’s degree in exercise science from The Citadel Graduate College in May 2010.

ABoUT EAGLE ALL-ACCESS Eagle All-Access is a “virtual stadium” – a seamless Internet experience – where viewers can follow all of EMU’s athletic pro-grams and all of the Eagles’ content they desire without ever having to leave home. It will be a one-stop-shop for live games, news conferences, coaches’ interviews and up-to-the minute scores, news and highlights. Subscription packages are just $5.95 for a 24-hour pass, $9.95 for an entire month or $79.95 for a full calendar year. A minimum of 60 events are scheduled in 2011-12 with further dates still being finalized for broadcast on All-Access. Dur-ing the 2009-10 campaign, EMU streamed 54 live events with other features appear-ing in the On-Demand Archive section. In 2010-11 that number was upped to more then 70 broadcasts. Eagle All-Access will video stream every home football, volleyball, men’s and wom-en’s basketball game. In the spring, All-Ac-cess shifts to audio-only in its coverage of EMU baseball and softball.

Matt Shepard Play-by-Play for Football

The 2011 season marks the 11th year that veteran Detroit-area broadcaster Matt Shepard will call the action on the field for the EMU football broadcast team. Shepard first handled EMU football play-by-play duties during the 1999 season. He returned in 2002, and has held the post for nine straight seasons. A widely known football and basketball broadcaster, Shepard is the voice of University of Michigan men’s basketball as well as the morning drive host on WDFN (1130 AM) in Detroit. Dur-ing his career, he has called NFL Europe games for FOX and, in 2005, Arena Football League games for Fox Sports Net and was the broadcast voice for a pair of WNBA Championships by the Detroit Shock. Shepard’s Fox Sports Detroit resume also includes extensive work as a reporter for the De-troit Lions, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Tigers, and play-by-play work for the Michigan High School Athletic Association football state finals and the CCHA hockey television package. In 2004, Shepard hosted the EMU Football Review with Head Coach Jeff Genyk on Comcast Local television.

Chad BushPlay-by-Play for Basketball, Volleyball and Baseball

The 2010-11 season marks the third consecutive year that Chad Bush has been calling baseball, volleyball and basketball games for Eastern Michigan University. Bush received the call to broad-cast the baseball team’s 2009 Mid-American Conference Tournament run on Eagle All-Access, be-fore adding a complete schedule of volleyball, women’s basketball, baseball and softball games in 2009-10. Then prior to the 2010-11 campaign, Bush was tabbed to take over the main responsibili-ties of EMU men’s and women’s basketball on WEMU, while still working select volleyball, baseball and softball games on Eagle All-Access. Prior to joining the Green and White, Bush served from 2006 until 2009 as the broadcaster of Wayne State University football and men’s basketball. A graduate of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s High School, Bush was on the football team at Central Michigan University before transferring to WSU to finish his degree in Speech Communication.

Ryan WooleyPlay-by-Play for Women’s Basketball

Ryan Wooley has pursued a career in sports broadcasting since his childhood and is proof that anybody can do whatever they put their mind to. Wooley grew up in Westland Michigan where he graduated from John Glenn High School and then went on to Eastern Michigan University, where he received a Bachelors degree in “Electronic Media and Film”. While at EMU, Ryan worked for WQBR, a student radio station where he served as the host of two shows per week. He also anchored the weekly news, delivered halftime updates during football and basketball on 89.1 WEMU, and handled the play by play for both football and basketball on the campus television station “E-TV”. Currently, Wooley is the play by play voice of the John Glenn High School football team as well as the EMU women’s basketball team on Eagle All-Access. In his free time, Ryan likes to work on cars, play video games, watch sports and hang out with friends. He currently resides in Belleville with his wife Michelle.

Jeff Fulton Executive Producer

The 2011-12 season marks the 26th year Jeff Fulton has been a part of the EMU broadcast team. Fulton serves as the on-site executive producer and statistician for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games on WEMU and Eagle All-Access. At one point, he has worked an incred-ible 188 straight EMU football games. A fixture in the Ypsilanti community and a longtime EMU supporter, Fulton was previously the communications director for the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department. t

Since the 1991 season, Eastern Michigan University athletic teams have gone by the nickname “Eagles.” The Eagles name was officially adopted on May 22, 1991, when the EMU Board of Regents voted to replace the existing Huron nickname and logo with the new one. EMU originally went by the nicknames “Normalites,” “Men from Ypsi” and various other titles through the years before “Hurons” was adopted in 1929. The “Hurons” first came into being as the re-sult of a contest sponsored by the Men’s Union in 1929. On Oct. 31 of that year, a three-person committee, composed of Dr. Clyde Ford, Dr. Elmer Lyman and Professor Bert Peet, selected the name “Hurons” from the many entries in the contest. The name was submitted by two students, Gretchen Borst and George Hanner. Hanner was working at the Huron Hotel at the time of the contest and was no doubt as much influenced by his place of employment as by the Huron Indian tribe. The runner-up name in that contest was Pioneers. EMU began investigating the appropriate-ness of its Huron Indian logo after the Michigan Department of Civil Rights issued a report in October 1988 suggesting that all schools using such logos drop them. The report indicated that the use of Native American names, logos and mascots for athletic teams promoted racial stereotypes. At that time, four colleges, 62 high schools and 33 junior high/middle schools in Michigan used Indian logos or names. The EMU Board of Regents voted to replace the Huron name with Eagles, taken from three recommendations from a committee charged with supplying a new nickname. The other two final names submitted were Green Hornets and Express.

Student-Athlete Support Services Academic, personal and professional support are essential to college success. At EMU, Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) helps student-athletes reach their full potential. Our philosophy is to offer an academic support program, integrated with the University, that will assist all student-athletes with their transition into college. This all-encompassing support continues throughout each student-athlete’s collegiate career, until the day he or she receives a diploma, lands a job or enters graduate school. Being proactive rather than reactive, our staff does not wait for an academic crisis to occur. We gather important background information and build an academic profile on each student-athlete, assessing his or her needs in advance. Services provided through SASS include the following: programs that focus on student-athletes’ special needs, monitoring academic performance, providing learning assistance, assisting with registration procedures, assisting in monitoring athletic eligibility, providing priority registration and making sure that athletes are advised about current NCAA, MAC and University rules and regulations. Freshmen and transfer student-athletes encounter a major transition when mak-ing the switch from high school or community college to a university. These students, while adjusting to their new routines, receive extra attention and support. College is not easy. But with hard work and dedication from both the student-athlete and the support staff, the student-athlete can have a successful college experience. The success of Eastern’s student-athletes hinges on their willingness to seek as-sistance from SASS as well as other University student services. SASS staff members continually refer student-athletes to the Admissions Office, Academic Advising Center, Career Services Center, Health Services, the Records Office, Financial Aid and The Holman Learning Center. Faculty members also provide assistance to student-athletes through advising in course selection and providing additional help with courses when requested.

Athletic Training and Sports Medicine The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine Department has a long history and reputation for excellence in the health care of student-athletes and the educa-tion of athletic training students. Founding practitioners Gary Strickland, Ron Venis and Dr. Wally Roeser envisioned a goal of first-class prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all student-athletes. Although the department continues to grow, its primary mission remains the same. The student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics receive comprehensive health care from an expansive sports medicine team. The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine staff is led by Dr. Tara Master-Hunter, Dr. Zoe Foster, Dr. David Alvarez, Dr. George Pujalte, Dr. Wally Roeser, Dr. Bruce Miller, Dr. Don Wurtzel and head athletic trainer Steve Nordwall. Additionally, the staff consists of two primary care sports medicine fellows, three full-time staff athletic trainers, two full-time athletic training clinical educators, five graduate assistant athletic trainers and the team dentist. Our sports medicine staff works in conjunction with various medical professionals within the community who provide nutritional, dental, vision and other specialized services for our student-athletes. At Eastern Michigan University, the philosophy of the Sports Medicine staff is two-fold: to provide a high standard of medical care through effective preventive and management programs, and to facilitate an effective post-injury rehabilitation process for a safe return to competition. In all cases, the ultimate well-being of each student-athlete is considered our number one priority, not only while they compete at Eastern Michigan University, but during their lifetime as well. The Sports Medicine staff operates out of three campus athletic training facilities in the Convocation Center, Bowen Field House and the Rynearson Stadium team building.

Sports Performance/Strength and Conditioning The main focus of the EMU strength and conditioning program is to develop the complete student-athlete. Everything that is incorporated into the training program relates to success on the court. The program is not just about lifting weights, but rather the development of all aspects of athletic performance. These areas include speed, strength, quickness, agility, flexibility, explosion, sports nutrition and mental toughness. One of the main objectives of the program is to improve the players’ agility and speed. The goal is to develop stronger and more physical student-athletes without losing speed or flexibility. With that in mind, our staff focuses on improving strength in the “Power Zone.” Abdominal, lower back and hip strength are crucial for an athlete’s success. Increas-ing strength in these areas decreases the chance and severity of injury and assists in strength and power development. EMU athletes are pushed as much as possible to prepare for competition. The athletes are challenged through physically demanding and intense workouts year-round. The athletes are also challenged during each workout with some type of mental toughness/physical challenge. We train not only the physical side of the student-athlete, but also the mental and competitive side. While everyone lifts weights during the year, EMU Eagle student-athletes will also condition. This places us as one of the best conditioned teams in the country each year. Our goal is simple: Be the best conditioned/most physical team in the coun-try. A highly motivated athlete is a program’s most valuable asset. Everyone in the country works on developing their athletes from the neck down, but at EMU, our program strives for excellence both mentally and physically. Our staff works to develop long-term and short-term goals for success. We work closely with the athletes so we know exactly what they are doing and what they need to do to improve. Developing athletes is a year-round task for our strength staff. During the year, the athletes will spend almost as much time in the weight room as they do on the court. Strength and Conditioning at EMU is a full-time commitment. There is no such thing as part-time champions. EMU athletes work hard but have fun. The camaraderie and work ethic developed in the weight room carry onto the field.

The Eastern Michigan University Office of Athletics Compliance is committed to a com-prehensive compliance program that educates student-athletes, prospective student-athletes, institutional employees, community members and boosters about the importance of adhering to NCAA, Mid-American Conference and institu-tional rules. The commitment to compliance en-sures institutional control over the department of athletics. The existence of a successful com-pliance program depends on the willingness of coaches, administrators, staff, student-athletes and boosters to be cognizant of NCAA, MAC and institutional rules.

WHAT IS CoMPLIANCE? At Eastern Michigan University, the Office of Compliance works within the department of athletics and the University to ensure EMU's compliance with all applicable NCAA, MAC and institutional rules. In doing so, the compliance office is charged with the following tasks:

Educating administrators, coaches, staff, •prospective student-athletes, current stu-dent-athletes and boosters about NCAA, MAC and institutional rules;Developing monitoring systems to ensure •compliance with NCAA, MAC and institu-tional rules (e.g., recruiting, academic eli-gibility, financial aid, awards and benefits, amateurism and agents);Investigating and reporting violations of •NCAA, MAC and institutional rules.

oNCE A BooSTER ALWAYS A BooSTER. Once an individual is identified as a booster, the person retains that identity forever! This is true even if the individual no longer contributes to, or is involved with, EMU's athletics program.

WHo IS A PRoSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE? A prospective student-athlete (prospect) is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade, students enrolled in preparatory schools and two-year colleges are also considered pros-pects. An individual remains a prospect even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent.

WHAT IS AN EXTRA BENEFIT? An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a EMU employee or booster to provide a pros-pect, student-athlete or their relatives or friends a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Examples of impermissible benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:

Gifts of cash, clothing, equipment or any •other tangible item;A special discount, payment arrangement •or credit on any purchase or service;Loan of money or co-signing of loans;•A vehicle, use of a vehicle, or any transpor-•tation expenses;Free or reduced-cost services, purchases or •rentals;Entertainment on- or off-campus; or•Free or reduced-cost rent or housing.•

WHAT ARE THE CoNSEQUENCES? EMU is responsible for the actions of its boost-ers. If a booster provides an impermissible ben-efit to a prospect, student-athlete, their relatives or friends, EMU may be subject to penalties from the NCAA and Mid-American Conference. When a violation occurs, regardless of intention, it can:

Jeopardize the eligibility of prospective •and current student-athletes; Result in the EMU athletics program being •penalized by the NCAA and/or the Mid-American Conference; and Cause you to lose benefits or privileges •associated with the athletics department (i.e., booster club membership, ticket privi-leges).

The EMU Athletic Club provides vital financial support to more than 550 student-athletes at Eastern Michigan University as they strive for excellence on the court and in the classroom. Nearly 1,000 donors generously supported our outstanding scholar-athletes each year. Established in 1994, the EMU Athletic Club raises funds in three key areas for EMU’s 21 varsity athletic teams: annual-use operating funds, endowment, and facility related projects. Today, annual-use giving is the most critical area of support needed by the Athletic Department. These contributions directly support the operating budgets of our teams and help provide the most basic needs to our coaches and student-athletes, including compre-hensive national recruiting efforts, out of region travel to maintain nationally competitive schedules, equipment such as uniforms, balls, nets, bats, and much more. Gifts to any of our teams, or to the Eagles for Excellence Fund (which will be used for the most urgent needs of the athletic department), are an investment in the future leaders of the state of Michigan. The Eastern Michigan University alumni varsity letterwinners club, E-Club, sponsors the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame. This year’s class will mark the 36th anniversary of the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame. The Class of 2011 will then be honored at the men’s in February of 2012.
