The CiTadel aThleTiCs deparTmenT mission sTaTemenTThe mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at The Citadel is to develop, maintain, and continue to improve a well-rounded program of athletics geared to the aims and objectives of The Citadel, the Southern Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In order to carry out this mission, all athletics personnel must be familiar with the athletics policy as approved by the Board of Visitors and the President of The Citadel:

The Citadel policy on intercollegiate athletics includes a balanced program covering a broad spectrum of sports for men and women. The College will support this program to enable its representatives to be competitive in every respect. The Citadel will compete as a Division I institution under current NCAA and Southern Conference regulations. The Citadel wrestling team is preparing for a strong 2008-09 season. The Bull-dogs have four return-ing Southern Conference placers from last season which include redshirt se-nior heavyweight Aaron Brown, 125-pound Tyler Sim, 141-pound Derek Royster and 157-pound Keith Koziel.

“Royster is showing great leadership coming off of a solid 2007-08 season, where he was a consistent contribution for the Bull-dogs,” said Bulldog Head Coach Rob Hjerling. “We have high expectations for him this season. Aaron Brown is a very athletic wrestler and is looking to finish his career in a posi-tive way.”

Bulldog wrestlers 149-pound Justin Sparrow, 174-pound J.C. Oddo and HWT- Ivan Muller are also looking to contribute quite a bit to the team this season. Coach Hjerling looks forward to these two men coming back this year.

“These wrestlers have great potential after coming off of a good redshirt year, and we have high expectations for them both,” Hjerling said.

The Bulldogs also have a number of new athletes joining the team. This group of wrestlers consists of state placers, state champions and two High School All-Americans. A total of 11 athletes join the team including Richard Alarcon, Manuel Camargo, Alex Croasmum, Odie Delaney, Pierre Frazile, Ryan Heald, David Ivashchenko, Bobby Jones, Roland Pitts, Kelby Smith and Justin Stewart.

Alarcon is a High School All-American from Lakewood, Calif., who is slated to wrestle in the 125-pound weight class. Smith and Delaney are the two high school state champions who will join the Bulldogs this season. Smith comes from Wesleyan, Ga. and is expected to wrestle at either 184 or 197 pounds for the Bulldogs. Delaney is put down as a 197-pounder from South Walton, Fla. who earned high school All-America honors.

Highlighting the schedule are five home dual matches, allowing wres-tling enthusiasts the opportunity to check out the Bulldogs from No-vember through March when they will host the Southern Conference Championships.

This year’s schedule features trips to tournaments such as the Reno Tournament of Champions, the Southern Scuffle, the Penn State Open and the All-Academy Championships. The Bulldogs will face some of the nation’s top competition in December at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Nevada. They will then continue with the Southern Scuf-fle in Greensboro, N.C. to close out 2008.

The Bulldogs will start Southern Conference competition on Jan. 30 in Chattanooga against the Mocs and will continue as they travel up to Lexington, Va., to face the Keydets of VMI. The Cadets will host the Southern Conference Championships on March 7 at home in McAlister Field House.

Rob Hjerling, the 2004 Southern Conference Coach of the Year and a 1994 graduate of American University, is in his 10th sea-son as head coach of The Citadel’s wrestling program.

Hjerling has an overall record of 61-64-3 and a combined 44-31-1 over the last five seasons. After going 2-11-2 and 1-4 in the SoCon (5th of 6) his first season, Hjerling boosted the Bulldogs to 13-3 and 5-0 in the SoCon (1st of 6) in 2004.

The Bulldogs made great strides in 2008; besting their record from the two previous seasons along with bringing in a top re-cruiting class. The Citadel secured big conference wins against VMI and Davidson. Hjerling led the Bulldogs to some of the most prestigous tournaments in college wrestling today, afford-ing the young team the opportunity to gain valuable experience competing against the nations top competition. The team placed fourth in the Southern Conference Championships with six indi-vidual placers.

In 2007, the Bulldogs had a nationally ranked athlete in Travis Piccard, who was invited to the All-Star Classic. The Citadel was led by experience and future prospects. The Bulldog lineup ran the gammet from true freshmen to redshirt seniors. This was a tansition year for the team as the gained experience and grew stronger as cadet-studet-athletes. The squad placed fourth at the Southern Conference Tournament with six placers.

Hjerling guided the 2006 squad to a historical season as Dan Thompson became the first All-American wrestler in Bulldog his-tory by placing seventh at 165 pounds at the NCAA Champion-ships. Thompson also won the Southern Conference Champion-ship at 165 pounds and six other Bulldogs placed to help The

Citadel to a third place finish in the conference. Sean Markey joined Thompson at the NCAA Championships at 141 pounds af-ter earning an at-large bid by finishing second in the SoCon and being named the SoCon Wrestler of the Year.

The 2005, squad placed second in SoCon and sent three wres-tlers to the NCAA tournament to mark the sixth time in six seasons that the Bulldogs sent wrestlers to the National Championship and the fifth season with multiple qualifiers. They also had five other wrestlers earn spots on the podium.

In 2004, the Bulldogs matched their highest ever winning percent-age with a record of 13-3 (.813) on their way to the school’s first SoCon wrestling championship since 1967. Hjerling’s grapplers included four individual conference champions in Ryan McClester (125), Dan Thompson (157), Keith Clifton (174) and Billy Linane (Hwt), all earning automatic bids to the NCAA Championship, while Sean Markey (133) earned one of the leagues at-large bids to bring the total number of Bulldogs in the NCAA’s to five. McClester was named the SoCon Wrestler of the Year.

Hjerling directed the third place 2003 squad to the highest win-ning percentage, .813, in school history. The Hjerling-led group saw two members, Keith Clifton (184) and Billy Linane (Hwt), win SoCon championships, while six others grappled to finish in the top three in the SoCon. With two conference champs and three runners-up, the Bulldogs sent four members of the 2003 team to the NCAA championships in Kansas City.

The 2003 squad also saw two grapplers make their way into the national rankings. The 133-pound Sean Markey finished the season ranked as high as 18th nationally by The Wrestling Mall,

while 149-pound Travis Piccard saw his name make it to 19th late in the season by the same publication. The Bulldogs finished that season with a mark of 13-3.

In 2001-02, the Bulldogs entered numerous tournaments with NCAA powerhouses and also wrestled dual meets versus Top 25 teams. Hjerling led The Citadel to scoring the most points since the SoCon’s 1967 Championship Team and best dual meet record since 1991 at 10-7. The Bulldogs had seven conference placers, five finalists, one SoCon champion and one NCAA qualifier.

In 2000-01, there were six conference placers, two conference finalists, one SoCon champion and two NCAA qualifiers. The team was ranked 16th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Academic Top 25.

During his first season (‘99-‘00) he had four conference placers, one conference finalist and one NCAA qualifier. The level of com-petition drastically increased with Hjerling at the helm. The team managed to go 5-15 and 2-3 SoCon (4th of 6). Hjerling came to The Citadel after spending the 1998-99 sea-son as an assistant coach at George Mason University, where he helped the Patriots to a runner-up finish in the Colonial Athletic Association while coaching four NCAA qualifiers. Following Hjer-ling’s departure, George Mason had one of their best seasons yet, showing the superb recruiting that had been done during Hjerling’s time there.

He spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Hjerling coached five NCAA qualifiers during those two seasons. He got his start in coaching at Manheim Township High School in Lancaster, Pa., spending the 1995-96 campaign as an assistant coach. As a senior at American University, Hjerling posted a 28-4 overall record. In addition, the Lancaster, Pa., native captured the Colo-nial Athletic Association’s 158-pound weight class championship, garnered CAA Most Outstanding Wrestler honors and earned a berth in the NCAA Championships. He completed his wrestling career with 69 victories. Hjerling is married to the former Megan Hoban of Cleveland, Ohio. The couple has a one-year-old son Seamus and are expect-ing their second child in early 2009.

Jeff Ragan, a former All-American at Oklahoma State, is in his ninth season as an assistant head wrestling coach at The Citadel.

Under the assistance of Ragan, the Bull-dogs crowned their first All-American in Dan Thompson, and have stood at the top of the Southern Conference podium. Ra-gan brings the technical knowledge and skill to the practice room on a daily ba-sis as he helps train the Bulldogs’ smaller weights.

Ragan has helped the Bulldogs excel on the mat and in the Classroom. As a teacher and coach, he aides the team in becoming high quality cadet-student-athletes.

Ragan graduated from Oklahoma State in May of 2000 with a bachelor of sci-ence degree in mathematics. A four-year letterman in wrestling, Ragan was a mem-ber of three Big XII Conference champi-onship teams while posting an overall record of 101-43. As a senior, the Engle-wood, Fla., native won 31 matches and captured the Big XII Conference individ-ual crown in the 125-pound weight class and finished sixth at the NCAA Champi-onships to earn All-America honors.

A four-time Big XII All-Academic Team selection, Ragan was named the Okla-homa State Male Student-Athlete-of-

the-Year in 2000 and was tabbed to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Academic All-America team. In addition, he became the 19th wrestler in Oklaho-ma State history to register 100 career victories.

Ragan also was a four-time freestyle All-American. In 1998 he captured a Free-style Espior National Champion title and became a Junior World Team member, where he placed in the top 10.

As a prep star, Ragan posted a 103-5 overall record at Lemon Bay High School, making three finalist appearances and winning a pair of Florida state cham-pionships, while earning Outstanding Wrestler honors as a junior and senior.

Ragan finished graduate school at The Citadel in December of 2002 and also works as an adjunct professor in The Citadel’s mathematics department. He is married to the former Andrea Denise Clark. The couple has a daughter, Allie, and a son, Jacob.

Evan Sola joined the Bulldog wrestling staff last season as an assistant coach. The two-time All-American and three-time Atlantic Coast Confer-ence Champion comes to The Citadel after an undergraduate tenure at North Carolina.

A leader on the UNC wrestling squad, Sola finished his career with a record of 117-32, tying for fourth in program history in the all-time wins category. Sola’s name can also be found in the all-time pins category as he won 27 matches by fall, placing him ninth. The former 133-pound wrestler was hon-ored twice as the ACC Wrestler of the Year and once as the ACC Champion-ship Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The Wernersville, Pa. native graduated from Conrad Weiser High School with the third all-time highest win record in state history, posting a 160-7 record.

During his collegiate tenure, Sola was a four-time ACC finalist and four-time NCAA qualifier earning All-America honors twice. He was the recipient of the Most Falls in the Least Amount of Time Award at the 2005 NCAA Champion-ship with three falls in 6:11. Sola proved to be a dedicated student-athlete while at UNC earning All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team honors while in the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Sola is currently pursuing his master’s degree in counseling at The Citadel Graduate College.

Billy Linane joins the Bulldog wrestling staff this season as an assistant coach. Linane is a 2005 graduate of The Citadel, where he majored in Criminal Justice and was a four-time letter win-ner in the heavyweight division.

Linane was the 17th wrestler in school history to become a member of The Citadel Wrestling Wall of Fame. Among his accomplishments as a Bulldog were 92 career wins, a four-time Southern Conference tournament finalist, two-time conference champion, and two-time NCAA qualifier.

The Kissimme, Fla. Native graduated from Gateway High School. Linane was a two-time state placer; fourth Place as a junior and state champion as a senior. He was also named Junior Greco All-American, finishing with a record of 112-24.

After graduating from The Citadel, Linane served as an assistant wrestling coach at Hillcrest High School from 2006-2008. While coaching at Hillcrest during the 2006-07 season the team took second in the state dual tournament and they won the traditional state title. During the 2007-08 wrestling season the team took eighth in the traditional state tournament.

Currently Linane resides in Charleston, S.C. and serves as a corrections officer for The Charleston County Detention Center. He is expected to bring a wide base of experience and knowledge to the wrestling program this season.

2007-08: Competed at heavyweight for the Bulldogs... notched a 22-15 record, including 10-5 in dual meet competition... tied for a team-high of eight falls with the fast coming in 25 seconds... placed second at the Pembroke Classic to open the season... finished out the second half of the season with a fourth place finish at the All-Academy and Southern Conference Championships.

Allison Taylor enters her first year as a graduate as-sistant in The Citadel Media Relations office. Taylor is also a graduate assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field team.

Taylor is a 2008 graduate of The Citadel where she received her bachelor’s degree in sports manage-ment. She was also the 2007-08 Health, Exercise and Sports Science Club president. As a cadet Taylor worked as a student intern for The Citadel’s media relations office, aiding in game-day duties as well as the 2008 SoCon baseball tournament.

While attending The Citadel, Taylor was a member of Mike Company, and a member of The Citadel’s

Wagner directly serves the basketball and wres-tling programs, while assisting with football and baseball at The Citadel.

Wagner was first appointed in December 2007 after spending the fall with the College of Charles-ton in a similar position. While at C of C, he was responsible for the Cougars’ men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and track and field. In addition, he assisted with men’s and wom-en’s basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.

In October 2007, Wagner had the privilege of training the New York Knicks during their preseason camp in Charleston.

Prior to arriving in Charleston, Wagner spent a short time as a volunteer strength coach at the Uni-versity of Nebraska Kearney. Wagner attended the University of Wyoming and attained his bach-elor’s degree in exercise science while working pri-marily with the UW Football and Strength & Con-ditioning programs.

Wagner is currently pursuing his master’s degree in exercise science with The Citadel Graduate Col-lege.

Wagner is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Con-ditioning Association.

Taylor served two years with Team IP Events & Ap-parel in Owensboro, Ky. She performed various du-ties and event website management during regional and national baseball/softball tournaments. She also served as the assistant registrar for the American Softball Association’s 2007 National Tournament.

Taylor is a native of Lexington, Ky. She is the daugh-ter of Dale Taylor of Owensboro, Ky. and Susan and Keith Drach of Lexington, Ky. Allison has four siblings, Matt and Paige Taylor, and Justin and Jason Drach.

Allison is currently working towards a master’s de-gree in health, exercise and sport science with an em-phasis in sports management in The Citadel Gradu-ate College.

Bryan White enters his second year at The Citadel, serving as a resident athletic trainer and working with the wrestling team.

White comes to the Military College of South Car-olina after serving an athletic training internship at Princeton University. During his time at Princeton, White worked with the Tigers’ men’s lacrosse, fenc-ing, wrestling and water polo teams.

White graduated from Salisbury University (Md.) in 2007. While at Salisbury, White served as an athletic training student assistant, working with

women’s basketball, track and field, women’s la-crosse and football. White also worked with near-by Parkside High School’s athletic teams.

White is currently working towards a master’s de-gree in health, exercise and sport science through The Citadel Graduate College. He currently re-sides in Charleston.

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Redshirt ju-nior Aaron Brown was the top Bull-dog placer as The Citadel took home a fourth place finish amassing 30.5 points at the 2008 Matt Jam South-ern Conference Tournament. The Mocs of Chattanooga were the top SoCon team for the fourth year in a row, fol-lowed by Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro, The Citadel, VMI and Davidson.

The Dogs repeated their 2007 ef-forts, placing six grapplers and tak-ing home the fourth place honors as a team. Returning Citadel starters, 125-pound Tyler Sim and 197-pound John Buck are the only two returning 2007 placers to compete in the 2008 Conference Championships. Finishing fourth in back-to-back SoCon tour-naments, the pair secured eight team points for the Bulldogs on Saturday. Sim got the action started for the Ca-dets in McKenzie Arena as he faced Jeremy Adams of VMI in round one. Adams took the match earlier this season in the dual between the two Southern Conference military schools and Sim was the victor in their match-up at the All-Academy Championships. The Bulldog sophomore made it two in a row against his VMI counterpart as he took the win in the first round of the tournament 6-4 in the tiebreaker round to advance to the championship semi-finals.

The Citadel’s 125-pound grappler was next slated to take on the tourna-ment’s No. 1 seed, Javier Maldonado who later became the 2008 SoCon Champion. The loss dropped Sim into the consolation bracket where he faced UNC Greensboro’s Mitchell Johnson. Johnson took a 6-4 deci-sion from Sim in their dual meet match back in January. Sim came out on top this time though with a 10-5 decision putting him into the championship fi-nals match.

Sim then faced Frank Celorrio from Appalachian State. The Bulldog grappler was unable to overtake Celorrio and fished the tournament placing fourth with an overall season record of 13-11.

Also placing fourth in the Champion-ships was 149-pound Cadet Derek Royster. He was the No. 4 seed and faced the No. 5 seeded Carl Sand-ercock of Davidson in the first round. Royster dominated the Sandercock for the second time this season. In their first match-up the Cadet shut out his Davidson opponent 6-0, this time he recorded a 10-2 major decision over Sandercock. The win propelled him into the semi-finals where he faced a tough match against Appalachian State’s Scott Ervin.

With the Mountaineers top ranked grappler taking the semi-finals match, The Citadel’s redshirt fresh-man dropped into the consolation semi-finals match. Royster faced-off against the No. 6 seeded John Held of VMI, who he conquered for the second time this season. The 6-2 vic-tory landed the Cadet in the consola-tion finals match against Marcus Han-nah from UNCG. Royster took home fourth place after being defeated by Hannah, but not before he recorded his 21st win of the season (21-20 overall) and six major decision.

True freshman Keith Koziel was the third Bulldog grappler to secure a fourth place finish. The 157-pound wrestler recorded his fastest fall of the season, at the 1:48 mark, against Joe McGinley of Davidson in the first round of competition. As with Sim and Royster, Koziel next faced the No.1 seed in the semi-finals. After losing a tough match to Chattanooga’s Wil-liam Garvin, Koziel faced-off against fellow military grappler Andrew Di-onne of VMI. The Bulldog wrestler continued to score bonus points for

the team as he shut out the Keydet grap-pler, recording an 8-0 major decision.

The consolation semi-final win put him up against UNCG’s Mark Ring for the third place bout. Koziel was overtaken by Ring and finished fourth at the 157-pound weight class. The tournament action im-proved the young grappler’s record to 18-19 overall, securing five major deci-sions and five falls in his first season as a collegiate grappler.

Like Koziel, fellow true freshman Bren-dan Prince also placed fourth for the Bulldogs in the Conference Championships. Prince was the No.3 seed coming into the tournament and faced the No. 6 seeded Kevin Cook of Davidson in the first round of action. The 165-pound grap-pler defeated his Davidson foe for the second time this season with his 6-1 victory in the SoCon Tournament. Prince advanced into the semi-finals match where he faced the No. 2 seed, Nick Davis of Chat-tanooga.

Davis overtook the young Ca-det 9-5 in a close match-up. The loss dropped Prince into the consolation bracket where he would face James Gordon of VMI for the third time this season. The Bull-dogs 165 pounder dominated his match going a perfect 3-0 against the fellow service academy grappler this season. The 10-2 major decision was the fifth of Prince’s collegiate career. The freshman advanced to the consolation semi-finals where he faced Tommy Hutchinson of Appalachian State. The two dueled just over a month earlier with Prince taking the victory 4-1 in McAlister Field House. Hutchinson came out on top in their sec-ond match-up 3-1, assuring Prince the fourth place finish. The Cadet’s 165-pound grappler closed his first collegiate season with a 21-19 overall record (8-7 in dual meet action, 3-2 SoCon), with five

major decisions and two falls.

Veteran Bulldog, John Buck was the fifth Citadel grappler to secure a fourth place finish. The fourth seeded Cadet first matched up against a familiar foe in VMI’s Ronald Ellsworth. Buck repeated his success against the Keydet grappler, recording a major decision for the sec-ond consecutive time. The 8-0 victory advanced him into the semi-final round of competition against UNCG’s Daren Burns. The Spartan grappler took the win and eventually the championship, while Buck received a buy into the con-

solations semi-final dual. The Cadet se-cured a fourth place finish, matching his 2007 efforts. Buck concluded his final season with a 17-19 overall record, se-curing three major decisions, a technical fall and a pin.

Redshirt junior Aaron Brown was the Bulldogs’ high placer, with a third place finish. The heavyweight grappler first faced the fourth seed, Jared Campbell of Appalachian State. Campbell edged out Brown 2-1 in their February dual, which set Brown up as the underdog be-ing seeded fifth going into the tourna-ment. The Citadel’s grappler paced the first round match, taking the 5-2 victory over Campbell to split their series and

advance into the semi-final’s dual.

Brown faced UNCG’s No. 1 seeded Ryan Hsu in his toughest match of the day. Af-ter the two were tied 3-3 coming out of regulation time, they entered the one min-ute sudden victory period. Hsu secured the late takedown, dropping Brown into the consolation bracket. The Cadet re-bounded back from his tough loss with a dominating performance over Davidson’s Charlie Wolff. Brown notched his eighth fall of the season, pinning Wolff at the 4:37 marking, advancing into the conso-lation finals match.

The third place match-up also featured Chattanooga’s Matt Lettner, who took a 3-2 vic-tory over Brown earlier in the season. The tough dual con-cluded with a 3-2 score, but with Brown coming out on top this time. The victory improved Brown’s overall record to 22-15 (10-5 in dual meet action, 2-3 SoCon), securing one ma-jor decision and eight falls along the way, with the fastest coming in 25 seconds.

Other Bulldogs that competed for The Citadel in the South-ern Conference Championship Tournament were freshmen Kip

Thompson at 141 pounds (0-2), Derek Sickel at 174 pounds (0-2) and Brian Hurley at 184 pounds (0-2), along with 133-poun junior Anthony Easter (0-2). The Bulldogs won three of their last four dual meets, finishing their season with a 7-8 record overall and going 2-3 in Southern Conference match-ups. The Citadel dominated both VMI and David-son during the regular season and was able to surpass both teams in the SoCon Tournament.

The Citadel’s Dan Thompson completed the first day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 16 at the Ford Center.

At 165 pounds, Thompson finished the day with two upsets under his belt as he defeated 10th ranked Patrick Pitsch of Arizona State in the first round with a 10-4 decision. In the second round, Thompson faced the No. 7 seeded Troy Letters - a three-time All-American, two-time NCAA Finalist, and 2004 NCAA Champion all at 165 pounds - from Lehigh. Letters, the 2005 third place finisher at 165, scored an early takedown, but Thompson reversed Letters and won by fall at 2:20 to

advance to the quarterfinals. Thompson will move on to face second-seeded Johny Hendricks of Oklahoma State. Hendricks is the defending NCAA Champion at 165 pounds.

Senior Dan Thompson became The Citadel’s first All-American wrestler on day two of the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Ford Center on March 17.

At 165 pounds, Thompson started the day in the quarterfinals where he faced Oklahoma State’s second-seeded Johny Hendricks. Hendricks came away with a 9-6 decision to give the Bulldog his first loss of the tournament. Thompson dropped down to the consolation fifth round where he defeated ninth-seeded Michael Poeta from Illinois, 7-6. The victory over Poeta moved Thompson into the final eight and secured his All-American status. Thompson then moved on to the consolation sixth round where he faced his first non-seeded opponent in Edinboro’s Deonte Penn. The Bulldog ended up on the wrong end of a near cradle and was pinned in the first round. The loss moved Thompson into the seventh-place match where he would face fellow All-American Eric Luedke of Iowa.

“I am very, very happy for Dan,” said Citadel coach Rob Hjerling. “This is a great stepping stone for Citadel wrestling. Dan has accomplished a great feat for the program and for himself.”

The Citadel’s Dan Thompson finished his college wrestling career with a victory as he won the seventh place match at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 18 at the Ford Center.

Thompson earned the No. 7 spot at 165 pounds with an 8-3 decision over Iowa’s Eric Luedke. Luedke opened the match with a takedown but Thompson escaped to trail 2-1 after one frame. Thompson differed the choice in the second round to Luedke who chose to start on bottom. Luedke escaped to gain a 3-1 lead, but Thompson soon scored a takedown to even the match at 3-3. Thompson chose the defensive position to start the third period. The Bulldog escaped to gain a 4-3 lead with just over a minute remaining. With 20 seconds left in the match Luedke attempted a shot but Thompson countered to score a takedown and add two back points as time expired. Thompson’s effort was impressive enough to illicit a standing ovation from the Ford Center crowd of over 15,000.

Facilities

Mcalister Field House

Originally constructed in 1939 and renovated in 1989, McAlister Field House serves as the home of The Citadel’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs.

The facility, which also houses the athletic department’s administrative offices along with locker rooms for the basketball and baseball teams, has a seating capacity of 6,000.

When built in 1939, the facility was referred to as “The Citadel Armory,” and seated 4,500 for basketball games.

In 2001, The Citadel annexed a women’s facility onto McAlister Field House. The women’s wing is home to offices and locker rooms for the women’s volleyball and soccer teams.

Top to bottom, McAlister Field House is one of the top basketball, volleyball and wrestling arenas in the region for both participants and fans. Even though 6,000 fans can pack into McAlister Field House for a basketball game, no fan is further than 24 rows away from the court. In addition, concession stands and restroom facilities are located on both the first and second floors.

With the seats pulled back, there are three full-size basketball and volleyball courts for practice. During inclement weather, The Citadel’s

baseball, football, tennis and track teams use the facility.

The Citadel has hosted three 6,000-fan “sellout” crowds in basketball since the building’s renovation in 1989, including games with Duke (1989),

South Carolina (1997) and College of Charleston (1999).

In January of 1998, 2002 and 2005, The Citadel and McAlister Field House hosted the annual All-Academy Wrestling Championships.

McAlister Field House served as the host arena of the 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championships.

McAlister Field House has also hosted such entertainment acts as Dave Matthews, Widespread Panic, Bob Hope, Kenny Rogers and Patti LaBelle. Events that have utilized the multi-purpose building include WCW Wrestling, Charleston Cup Gymnastics Championships, Special Olympics, Moja Arts Festival Activities, Rotary/Red Cross Roundball High School Basketball Classic and assorted high school and college graduation ceremonies.

The floor was repainted during the summer of 2008 and exhibits the new Southern Conference logo and “Spike,” the logo of The Citadel athletics.

The wrestling team will be competeing on a new mat this season which is dedicated to the late Brian Ruff Jr., a former Bulldog wrestler. One of the largest mats in the region, it provides ample space for the Cadet graplers to keep wrestling on the edge.

VandiVer Hall

Coaches’ offices, locker rooms and the Bulldogs’ wrestling room are all located in Vandiver Hall. Vandiver Hall was built in 1991 and is a multipurpose athletic complex. Displayed on the walls of the wrestling room are names of former Bulldog wrestlers and the honors they received.

President

The Citadel President Lt Gen John W. Rosa was born in Springfield, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel, Rosa was the starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force.

A command fighter pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange officer flying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and

wing levels at air bases in South Korea, Idaho, South Carolina, New Mexico and Georgia. He served as inspector general for Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate Uni-versity. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He has also studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has flown the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircraft, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130.

On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th presi-dent. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (‘03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

The Citadel’s President Lt Gen John W. Rosa, Jr. named Larry Leck-onby as the 11th athletics director at the South Carolina Military College in a press conference held at the Altman Athletics Center on June 13, 2008. Leckonby officially joined the Bulldog Family on July 15.

Prior to The Citadel, Leckonby spent six years as a senior associ-ate athletic director at the University of Maryland. Hired as the athletic department’s Chief Financial Officer in September 2002, he managed the department’s annual $51.2 million operating budget, capital projects and long-range financial forecasting.

In addition, Leckonby was the sport supervisor for women’s bas-ketball, assisted the Athletic Director with men’s basketball and football, and supervised the athletic business office, athletic ticket office and information technology. He was also responsible for coordinating departmental construction projects, which have in-cluded a $50.8 million expansion of the football stadium, as well

as expansions to the Gossett Football Team House, new grass and field turf practice fields and the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Com-plex. He also served on several campus committees including the University Finance Committee and the University Facilities Advi-sory Committee.

Prior to accepting the position at Maryland, Leckonby served as the senior associate director of athletics at the University of Houston, appointed in January 1998. He was responsible for the daily administration of the department and specific areas of duty involving finance, planning, fund-raising and marketing. He also served as interim athletics director for six months in 2001 and 2002.

Leckonby also worked as the associate AD for business affairs at Boston College for four-and-a-half years (1993-98), and the as-sistant AD for finance and operations at Old Dominion University for five years (1988-93). He was the ticket manager and assistant business manager at Boston University from 1982 to 1988, after beginning his athletics business career at the University of Massa-chusetts (Amherst) where he was an administrative assistant to the business manager beginning in 1981.

A former lacrosse player at Duke University, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in management science in 1979. He earned a master’s degree in sport management from Massachusetts in 1983.

Leckonby is an active member of the College Athletic Business Managers Association. While serving on numerous finance and planning committees during his career, he also has helped direct several NCAA and conference championships including NCAA Baseball Super Regional events in 1999, 2000 and 2002.

Leckonby and his wife, Cris, have two daughters, Hunter and Katie, and a son, William.

The Southern Conference, which began its 87th sea-son of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a na-tional leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in help-ing to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pa-cific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision confer-ence. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won the last two Football Championship Subdivision titles. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the South-east and sponsors 19 varsity sports and champion-ships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions.

The Southern Conference office is located in the his-toric Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today of-fers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the con-ference’s historical documents.

Membership HistoryThe Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Con-ference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921.

In 1922, six more schools - Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. A year later, the University of the South joined the ranks. VMI became a member in 1925 and Duke was added 1929. Since then, conference member-ship has experienced a series of membership chang-es with 42 institutions having been affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transi-tions during its history.

The first occurred in December 1932 when the South-eastern Conference was formed from the 23-school Southern Conference. The league’s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands that were present in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conference invited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond and Wake Forest to join the membership.

The second major shift came about in 1953 when Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. This change was brought about due to the desire of many of those schools to schedule a greater number of regular season basketball games against local rivals.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a member-ship that spans four Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Cita-del, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford will officially join the league, bringing membership of the confer-ence to 12.

LeadershipJohn Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference. In nine years with the New Jersey-based league, Iamarino promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the confer-ence and its member institutions.

The Southern Conference named its first commis-sioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach

Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference.

Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Ger-mann became the league head in 1974. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spear-headed the transfer of the league office from Char-lotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C.

Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball Tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was fol-lowed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current SoCon logo and elevated the conference’s commit-ment to marketing and development of corporate partners. He became the president of the Asheville franchise of the National Basketball Development League in 2001.

Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C. to historic Beaumont Mill in Spartan-burg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the confer-ence increased its marketing and promotional ef-forts.

Championship HistoryThe first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tourna-ment to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament re-mains the oldest of its kind in college basketball.

The Southern Conference began sponsoring women’s sports during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994.

The Southern Conference currently declares champi-ons in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, bas-ketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Cita-del as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied history. Located in Charleston, S.C., the institution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experi-ence that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. Graduates of The Citadel say that the disciplined lifestyle and friendships they forged here have a profoundly positive effect on their lives.

With an enrollment of more than 2,000, the Corps of Cadets is the na-tion’s largest military college program outside the service academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 per-cent of the graduating seniors earn military commissions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market.

The Citadel Graduate College, which is noted for The Citadel excellence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,200 residents of South Caro-lina’s Lowcountry.

Academic programs at the college are complimented by a strong com-mitment to service and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its found-ing in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction.

Corps of Cadets ...All undergraduate students at The Citadel are members of the South Caro-lina Corps of Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and represent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period.

Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation.

Academic Programs...Because of the strength of the academic pro-gram, The Citadel has repeatedly been rated as a top regional institution in the annual rank-ings issued by U.S. News and World Report. The quality of the education at The Citadel combined with the availability of financial aid, the credentials of the faculty and the gradu-ation rate earned the institution the citation of Best College Value in the South in 2007. With more than 80 percent of its students returning each year, The Citadel enjoys one of the best retention records in the country. The Citadel’s 14 academic departments offer five bachelor’s de-grees in 17 areas, six master’s degrees in 17 areas and specialist degrees in two areas.

Cadet-Student-Athletes...

The Citadel Graduate College...The Citadel’s evening college serves the Lowcountry by offering nationally accredited bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees scheduled around the student’s profession, family and lifestyle. It is the well-known Citadel academic excellence in a civilian en-vironment. The CGC offers 20 graduate programs with concentrations in education, psychology, computer science and business. The Master of Business Administration program is the only nationally accredited MBA program in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The CGC also offers three undergraduate evening programs in business and engineering. The Citadel is the only col-

lege in South Carolina that offers undergraduate civil and electrical engineering degrees in the evening.

The Citadel leads South Carolina with the highest four-year Graduation Rate at 62.4 percent, while the national aver-age is only 30 percent.

Cadets receive gold stars for earning a 3.7 GPA or higher. The stars are worn on both sides of the collar of their dress uniforms and above the left pocket of their summer leave uniforms.

The Citadel ranks No. 3 nationally among public colleges and universities in the Carnegie classification in the percent-age of students who graduate in four years. That category includes colleges with master’s level programs.

The ranking considered such factors as hours students study outside of class, quality of the student body, class size, student assessment of professors and other resources.

Cadets are trained that there is never a situation in which they should participate in, or tolerate, dishonorable activities. Honor is the most cher-ished principle at The Citadel. In today’s post-corporate-scandal soci-ety, honor, integrity and ethics are in high demand. The Citadel strives to achieve excellence in the education of prin-cipled leaders, also known as the “whole person” concept. The Honor Code encompasses all aspects of cadet life, from academic integrity to personal integrity. It has evolved from an unwritten tradition known as the “code of the gentleman” to a formalized code in September of 1955, when the Corps of Cadets unanimously voted to establish The Honor Code. The development of a cadet into a principled leader is a four-tiered process that includes knowing, adhering, believing, and leading. Its culmination is seen in the cadets who internalize the Code and the alumni who continually apply it throughout their lives.

“A Cadet does not Lie, Cheat, or Steal, nor Tolerate those who do.”The Krause Initiative in Ethics and Leadership, in support of The Citadel Vision, is a college-wide effort to enhance leadership development and ethical growth at The Citadel.

Established in July of 2003, the mission of the Krause Initia-tive is to provide institutional programs and activities that will help strengthen The Citadel’s preparation of principled lead-ers. Supporting The Citadel’s core values, the Krause Initiative promotes the ethical growth and leadership development of our students while serving as a model for peer institutions.

Funded by a generous endowment from Bill Krause (Citadel Class of 1963) and his wife, Gay, the Krause Initiative is a multifaceted program that serves as a resource for institutional and regional outreach activities while promoting leadership and ethics on campus.

Directed by LTC Weart, the Krause Initiative will produce and promote developmental policies and instruction, coordinate in-teractions for cadets, students, faculty/staff, and serve as an agent for outreach efforts in the area of ethics and leader development.

Traditionally received during Parents’ Weekend by first class cadets, The Citadel ring symbolizes honor and the unity between The Citadel graduates. Worn proudly by alumni of all ages, cadets look forward to the day that they will be able to wear this band of gold with pride.

The ring has symbolized outstanding accomplishments both by the Corps of Cadets and South Carolina. Perhaps the most popular feature of the ring is

the “Star of the West”, which commemo-rates the firing on a Union supply steamer

by a detachment of Citadel cadets in January 1861. This action was

Every aspect of the ring is sym-bolic of the history and tradition of the Corps of Cadets from the Mexican War through both World Wars, to the present day. The Citadel is a military college and the leadership, cour-age and integrity found in good officers is embodied by the sword, found on the left shank of the ring. Crossing the sword is the rifle, the symbol of the infantry. Of equal importance in this world of political aggrandize-ment and perpetual military conflict are the concepts of freedom acquired and maintained only through a willingness to fight for it, represented by the rifle surmounted by the oak leaves of toughness and victory blessed by peace, represented by the laurel wreath.

On the right shank of the ring are found the United States and South Carolina flags, which depict the unity of the state and federal government. The cannon balls at the bottom of this shank indicate the continuing link between the Old Citadel on Marion Square and the Greater Citadel. When the college moved to its present location, the Civil War cannon balls piled before the Old Citadel were left behind. The oval crest has a reproduction of the Pal-metto tree in its background. Aside from representing the state tree of South Carolina, the Palmetto symbolizes a cadet-trained regiment of infantry that fought in the Mexican War and it represents a fort, built of Palmetto logs, that repelled a large British invasion fleet during the Revolutionary War. The two oval shields at the base of the tree are replicas of the state seals.

The Citadel sits on a 300-acre tract of land on the Ashley River. There are 28 buildings grouped around a large (10-acre) grass parade ground. The buildings around the parade ground include 10 classroom buildings, an admin-istrative building, four barracks, a student activities building, infirmary, chapel, a field house and library. Just off the main campus are the football stadium, baseball stadium and alumni center.
