Centenary College AthleticsOur Athletic Philosophy

Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The

phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile.

As coaches, we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach

stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline, and commitment. We know that these principles will

translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will

understand what it means to be committed to excellence.

About Our Athletic ProgramAt Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA

Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College

regulations.

Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of

our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality.

As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness.

During your years at Centenary you will be asked to make sacrifices, but these sacrifices will be well rewarded by relationships and memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Athletic Training and Conditioning

The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto.

The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice.

In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

John Garriques completed his sixth season as a head coach of the Centenary College wrestling program, where the team has posted a 51-34-1 mark in his six seasons. Under his direction, the program has also sent at least one wrestler to NCAA National Tournament in five of the past six seasons.

Garriques repeated history in the 2011-2012 season as he led the Cyclones to their second consecutive Metropolitan Conference Championship, sending four members of his squad to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. At the tournament, his squad finished 21st with two men earning All-American honors to lead the Cyclones a final national ranking of No. 19.

The 2011-2012 team finished the season 8-5 overall, including a 6-1 conference mark with their only loss coming to Elizabethtown early in the season in a heated dual. Leading the squad was the fourth ranked 157 lb. Chris Burdge who took home a fifth place finish at the NCAA Tournament as well as four first place finishes throughout the season, ending the year with a 31-3 record.

Joining Burdge was 285 lb. All-American J.D. Zitone who finished the year ranked fifth in the nation after earning a seventh place finish at the NCAA Tournament as well as finishing the season undefeated at 26-0 for the Cyclones with a final record of 29-2.

Page 9: 2013 Wrestling Media Guide

The 2010-11 campaign proved to be Garriques’ best, as the Cyclones received their highest-ever national ranking, No. 8 in the country, won the Metropolitan Conference Tournament for the first time in program history, sent a program-record five wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Champions and saw three achieve All-American status, also a program-first.

For his work, Garriques was named Metropolitan Conference Coach of the Year and assistant coach Mike Kessler earned Metropolitan Assistant Coach of the Year honors.CC finished the year 12-2 overall, including 6-1 in Metropolitan Conference action, setting program records in dual victories and conference dual victories. Both of Centenary’s losses came to ranked opponents in No. 5 Ithaca and No. 12 TCNJ. The team placed second in both the Ithaca Invitational on Nov. 7 and the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.

Seven Cyclones won at least 20 matches, led by senior Matt Regan’s 28. Fellow classmates Dave Alsieux (27 wins), Jon Stillo (25), Will Livingston (24) and Charles Cannella (22) also had successful seasons, as did junior Owen Vernon (22 victories) and sophomore JD Zitone (21).

Eight Cyclones placed in the Metropolitan Conference Tournament to give CC won the event for the first time in program history. Livingston, Zitone and junior Tim Lutke won at 133-pounds, heavyweight and 197 to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. They were joined by freshman Chris Burdge and Alsieux, who placed second at 157 and 141.

Burdge earned Metropolitan Conference Co-Rookie of the Year honors and d3wrestle.com Rookie of the Year accolades, and he was not finished. He upset the top-seed at 157 in the NCAA’s and went on to place eighth to become Centenary’s first-ever rookie All-American. Livingston, who became the program’s first All-American last season when he placed third at 133, battled through injury to earn sixth-place and receive All-American status for the second-straight year, another program-first. Lutke took seventh at 197 as Centenary placed 13th out of 60 teams.

Page 10: 2013 Wrestling Media Guide

Centenary’s success extended past the mat, as the team posted the 10th-best GPA in the nation to earn a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar Team Award. Moreover, Alsieux, Regan, Stillo, junior Jose Vega and Vernon each received NWCA Division III Scholar All-American honors, given to those student-athletes with at least a 3.2 GPA. For Stillo, it marked the third consecutive season he has earned the award.

The 2009-10 campaign proved to be historical for the Cyclones, as Livingston became the program’s first-ever All-American, finishing third in the NCAA Wrestling Championships. He also was ranked a contender by d3wrestle.com. Livingston earned a berth to the prestigious event by winning his weight class in the Metropolitan Championships, the first Cyclones to achieve that feat for Garriques and just the second in program-history. Thanks to Livingston’s efforts, Centenary finished the season ranked No. 27 in the country.

CC placed fourth in the Metropolitan championships as Regan finished second at 165, Stillo won true second at 149 and Alsieux took fourth at 141. Centenary finished the season 8-9 overall, with six losses coming at the hands of ranked teams, including three top-ten programs. Four Cyclones won at least 20 bouts. Off the mat, Centenary finished with the 17th-bes t GPA in the nation and Stillo, Alsieux, Mike Hall and Regan all were named Scholar All-Americans.

In 2008-09, CC won 10 dual victories with only six losses. In tournament action, the wrestlers placed on 13 occasions, including one championship and one runner up. Vernon was named second alternate to the NCAA Tournament, as the team finished fourth out of nine in the Metropolitan Championships. Off the mat, the team finished with the 22nd-best GPA in Division III, and Stillo earned Scholar All-American honors with the 23rd-best individual GPA in the nation.

Garriques came to Centenary by way of a very well known wrestling program at Phillipsburg High School, where he had been an assistant for three seasons under legendary coach Rick Thompson. At Phillipsburg, which happens to also be his alma mater, Garriques was directly involved with every aspect of the daily activities within the program. During his stint with the Stateliners, the team won three Skyland Conference Championships, one Group 4 Championship and had three individual state place winners.

Prior to his return to Phillipsburg, Garriques was an assistant for one year at Middlesex County College in Edison, N.J. While at Middlesex he coached five National Qualifiers, one All-American and

coached the team to a fourth-place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Garriques wrestled for Phillipsburg High School, where he was a three-time New Jersey State placewinner. He also helped his team to receive recognition of being number one in the state, three years in a row. In 1997, his senior season, Garriques was a New Jersey State Finalist, taking second-place at the State Tournament. He was also named a High School All-American that same season, due to his second-place finish at the NHSCA National Tournament.

During his high school years, Phillipsburg won three Group 4 State Championship and three Skyland Conference Championships. Upon graduation, Garriques attended Gloucester County College in Gloucester, N.J. During his freshman year he became a Junior College National Champion, on his way to becoming a two-time Junior College All-American in both 1998 and 2000.

Page 12: 2013 Wrestling Media Guide

During his career at Gloucester he also helped the team win two National Team Championships. From there he transferred to Seton Hall University in the fall of 2000, and was an NCAA National Qualifier. Garriques then completed his wrestling career the next season at Hofstra University where he also became a National Qualifier, for the second consecutive year. While at Hofstra, Garriques helped the Pride achieve National Recognition, as they were ranked in the top 20 in the country and won the CAA conference. Garriques was ranked as high as fourth in the country at his weight class during his senior season.

Garriques’ high school and college career record stands at 234-45. Along with his wrestling accolades, Garriques also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with minors in Psychology and Communications from Seton Hall University in 2004.Garriques currently resides in Phillipsburg, N.J. with his wife Jacqueline and their son Owen Teague, who was born Nov. 5, 2008 and classified in the 8-pound 12 ounce weight class.

Mike Kessler just finished his second season as an assistant wrestling coach at Centenary College, helping bring the squad to back-to-back Metropolitan Conference Championships.

Thanks to his efforts in the 2010 season, Centenary won the Metropolitan Conference Touranment, earning Kessler Metropolitan Assistant Coach of the Year.

As a collegiate wrestler, Kessler competed at the Division I level for Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. Kessler was a four-time NCAA qualifier with 99 collegiate victories. He was ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation at 149-pounds during his time at Rider. Kessler was also a Colonial Athletics Association (CAA) Conference Champion his senior year, also at 149. Kessler placed fifth at the University Freestyle Nationals in 2009 to earn freestyle All-American status at 70 kg.

Before Rider, Kessler wrestled at Owings Mills High School in Owings Mills, Md. He was a four-time Maryland State placewinner and was an undefeated State Champion in 2005, going 36-0. In high school Kessler was also a Maryland Freestyle state champion and a Middle Atlantic Eastern National Champion at 152-pounds. Kessler also served as Class President at OMHS in 2003-04.

In Memoriam:Robert T. Quade

A simple bowtie: Who knew that a simple bowtie could become the symbol of a man who not only founded the Centenary College wrestling program, but could easily be called one of the most

influential men to have ever walked through Hackettstown, N.J.

Robert T. Quade came to Centenary College in 1986 as the Chair of the Business Department where he served for 15

years after a teaching stint at the University of Iowa, University of Arkansas, Rutgers University, and Fairleigh

Dickinson University. Prior to entering the world of academia, Quade was affiliated with the hospital field for Johnson and Johnson and the NYC Health and Hospital

Corporation, where he was responsible for developing the first market research group in professional products for

Johnson & Johnson.

In 1992, Quade was approached by a few Centenary students who knew he had wrestled, and asked him to help

start up a wrestling program at the school. After getting approval, Quade got together a team of seven wrestlers

who practiced on the gym’s wall mats, and led the team to win their first ever dual meet, defeating West Point Prep

and establishing themselves as an official club team.

Since becoming a NCAA Division III wrestling program, the team has earned national recognition while taking home back-to-back Metropolitan Conference Championships over the past two years. Although Quade handed over the coaching reins, he never gave up his passion, traveling with and

supporting the team for 19 years sitting mat side in the coaches’ pit.

Bob’s support went so far as to challenge the team that if they become ranked 17th in the nation, he would die his hair green (“Green at Seventeen”), and after the Cyclones found themselves there, Bob

lived up to his word. To push the envelope even farther, Quade decided he would “Do It Again, If They Break Top Ten,” and true to his word, Bob dyed his mustache green when the team became the

eighth ranked team in the nation.

Page 16: 2013 Wrestling Media Guide

This past year, the Cyclones hosted their annual “Public Elimination Night” to decide who would earn starting positions in the pre-season wrestle-offs. To add a fun spin to the night, Quade decided to dig

out his singlet and headgear, and take on Assistant Coach Mike Kessler, pinning him quickly in the end of the night antics.

Not only did Quade discover, create, and run the wrestling team, during his time in Hackettstown, Quade also founded the Centenary cross country team, created the Ethiopia Reads program, was

inducted into the Hackettstown Senior Hall of Fame, served as the NCAA FAR for Centenary College, served on the town’s Rotary Club, and served as Centenary College’s Professor Emeritus.

Quade was known for wearing his bowtie to work every day, and when asked by a fellow Rotarian the reason for it, Bob said: “I figured it would make me stand out.” Although Bob really didn’t need the bowtie to stand out, the simple image of a bowtie will forever be linked to this man who completely

changed Centenary College and the lives of everyone who has ever known him.

Bob Quade passed away this past May, but his name, legacy, and tradition will forever be a part of Centenary College. Head Coach John Garriques and his wrestling team will be dedicating the 2012-13

season in honor of Quade in hopes of bringing home the program’s first ever national title.

Season PreviewThe Centenary Wrestling Team is coming off yet another impressive campaign, finishing the year ranked #19 in the nation. The 2011-2012 season started out with a bang, as the team won the Ithaca Invitational, out placing host Ithaca College, the #4 team in the nation.

The team was burden with some injuries throughout the year, but still managed to defend their Metropolitan Conference Championship. For the Conference Championships, the Cyclones beat #12 York College, #23 Wilkes University, #25 Elizabethtown College, and #6 The College of New Jersey to earn their second consecutive title.

The Cyclones wrapped up at the NCAA Tournament 21st in the country adding two more All-Americans to the wall. Sophomore Chris Burdge moved up on the podium, going from eighth in the country in 2011 to fifth in the Country in 2012. J.D. Zitone became Centenary wrestling’s first Academic and Athletic All-American, placing seventh at 285 lbs. while being named a NWCA Scholar All-American. 125 lb. freshman Chris Parker qualified for the NCAA Tournament as well but unfortunately went 0-2. Owen Vernon, a 2010 NCAA Alternate, is back in action and moving up from 157 to compete at 165 looking to make his way to the podium.

The 2012-2013 Season looks to be another one for the record books as the Cyclones return two All-Americans, and a National Qualifier with 157lb. two-time All-American Chris Burdge and 2012 heavyweight All-American J.D. Zitone both fighting to be Centenary’s first National Champion! Competing alongside Burdge and Zitone will be 165 lb. National Qualifier Nick Bach, and 2011 All-American Tim Lutke who will have to wait in the woodworks until second semester before hitting the mat.

Page 18: 2013 Wrestling Media Guide

The 2012-2013 recruiting class features 24 newcomers, including four New Jersey State place winners, one High School All-American, and one Prep National All-American. The recruiting class also features nine New Jersey State Place winners, with 15 District, and eight Region titles amongst the crew. 125 Lbs.The 125 lb. class has got the most depth of any weight class this season. 2011 starter Alex Reeves looks to defend his spot, but will be contested by seven hungry freshmen all after the starting spot: 2012 High School All-American third-place Erick Orellana and New Jersey State qualifiers Joey Mazza, Gabe Zamot, and Anthony Rosamilia will be fighting for the spot while Two-Time District Champion Brian Schnieder is also back in action after taking off a year to gain size, along with Freshman District Champ Chaz Coppa, all looking for their time to shine.

133 Lbs.2012 starter Adam Swift will look to regain the starting position this year, but will also be challenged by some strong newcomers. Beast of the East fourth place winner and New Jersey State place winner Zach Huxford, a transfer from George Mason University, will look to challenge Swift for the starting position.

141 Lbs.Last year’s starting 149 lb. wrestler Don Miller will look to make the descent to 141 this year. Joe Bartolini, who shared the starting position with Miller last year, will look to earn a more dominate position in 2013. They will be joined by Naval Academy Transfer Corey Vernon, who finished seventh in the New Jersey State Tournament as well as Allan Jordan, a two-time New Jersey District Champion.

Season Preview

Page 19: 2013 Wrestling Media Guide

Season Preview149 Lbs.Craig Montgomery will be bumping up for the 2013 season, which will add an interesting mix to the lineup. Looking to mix things up this year will be 100 win-club member Mathew McBride and Brandon Kosheff while Tarique White will also be in the mix.

157 Lbs.Returning Two-Time All-American Chris Burdge will be a tough draw for anybody yet that is not stopping New Jersey State Qualifier Tyler Van Dyke, Top 16 Fargo finisher Nicholas Mauro and Maurice Barrantes from testing the water.

165 Lbs.A vacant spot at 165 looks to be filled as New Jersey third-place winner and 2009 NCAA First Team Alternate Owen Vernon is back in action for the 2012-2013 season. Two-time District Runner-Up Joey Ragsdale and DJ Wagner will also look to challenge for the spot.

Page 20: 2013 Wrestling Media Guide

Season Preview184 Lbs. 184 lbs. is shaping up to be the battle of the New Jersey State Qualifiers this season as Jon Acosta, who shared the starting spot in 2012, and sophomore Zach Bohn look to battle it out.

197 Lbs. The 197 lb. weight class is very light this year, but looks to have a strong fill as Phil-lipsburg High School’s 32nd State Champion, 2011 Junior Nationals sixth-place finisher, Two-Time New Jersey State Place winner, and 2012 USA Wrestling Honor-able-Mention Brandon Hull looks to step in.

285 Lbs. Centenary College’s only Academic and Athletic All-American J.D. Zitone will look to continue on last year’s dominant performance after an undefeated regular season and seventh place finish at the NCAA Tournament. Jumping in the mix will be two individual wrestlers that have gotten in the lime light for the Cyclones. New Jersey State Qualifiers Brian Grise and Russell Boardman will look stay on the heels of Zitone while Adam Cyclone Daniels, who saw some action in 2012, also looks to stir the pot.
