Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited specta-tor, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look for-ward to cheering on the Jackets with you!

As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes . While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athleti-cally during their collegiate experience .

During the 2013-14 academic year, 133 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls . That com-bined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg .

Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose . We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport .

Coach Headlee will be available to reporters for interviews approximately 15 minutes after the conclusion of home matches .

Wrestlers All wrestler interviews must be coordinat-ed through the Waynesburg Sports Informa-tion Office and should be requested at least one day in advance . Wrestlers are avail-able for interviews after each practice, as their schedules permit . Post-match player interviews are conducted in the Marisa Fieldhouse .

The Waynesburg University wrestling team is coming off back-to-back Presidents’ Athlet-ic Conference (PAC) titles and four champi-onships over the past five years. However, if this year’s Yellow Jackets are going to com-plete a three-peat, they’ll need to replace some major contributors from last year’s squad . While a large, talented recruiting class should help soften the blow of last year’s losses, the PAC continues to get more and more competitive on seemingly a yearly ba-sis . Seventh-year head coach Ron Headlee and his staff is hoping this year’s newcomers, combined with six returning starters, will be enough to overcome a challenging sched-ule both inside and out of the conference . 125 PoundsJunior Gordan Bieber is back and the leader for the starting job at Waynesburg’s lightest weight . His sophomore season was highlight-ed by winning his weight at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational, as well as defeating W&J national qualifier Jacob Spearman at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Tour-nament, where he wound up placing sixth overall. Bieber finished 2014 with a 17-21 overall record . Along with having Bieber back for his junior campaign, the 125-pound weight class could be one of the deepest on the team . Sophomore Mike Roberts returns as a back-up and is joined by true freshman Tristan Buxton and redshirt freshman transfer Zach Swarrow . 133 PoundsFilippo Crivelli made a great first impres-sion on his teammates in 2013-14 by going 24-20 overall and winning a PAC title . The now-sophomore was also featured in the D3Wrestle .com rankings at various points during the latter parts of his freshman cam-paign . Swarrow could also help fill in the depth chart at 133 . 141 PoundsLast year’s 141-pound champion Jake Vi-tolo is no longer with the Yellow Jackets and left an unexpected hole in this year’s starting lineup . However, the cupboard is far from bare at this weight and the competi-tion for the starting job should bring out the best in several Waynesburg light weights . Sophomore Dom Ciaramella, who went

11-8 last year, is one of the lead candidates for the job . He will be challenged primar-ily by freshman D .J . Grindle, who won over 140 matches over his high school career and placed fourth in the state of Mary-land following his senior season . Senior Kyle Seaman brings a veteran element to the depth chart . 149 PoundsWaynesburg’s most decorated wrestler, se-nior Luke Lohr, is back after winning his third PAC title at 149 pounds and becoming a two-time Division III national qualifier in 2013. He comes into his final season with the Yel-low Jackets boasting a 79-18 career record . Lohr may start the season out at 157 pounds, before working his way back down to 149 . If he does start the year up a weight class, fellow senior Shane Foster could handle the job for the first part of the season. Foster posted a 14-12 overall mark last season, with his most impressive win coming by way of a 3-1 sudden victory triumph over Division II All-American Jeremy Landowski . Junior Chris Little provides another quality workout op-ponent and tournament wrestler at this spot . 157 PoundsLohr and Foster are the leads for this start-ing spot . Luke Lohr’s younger brother, fresh-man Landon Lohr and senior Eric Tuck pro-vide some of the best depth on the team at this weight . 165 PoundsTwo-year starter Sam Guidi is back for his se-nior season and is ranked in the national top 10 by both D3Wrestle .com (sixth) and the NWCA (seventh) at 165 pounds . Like Lohr, however, he may start 2014 up a weight at 174 pounds before descending back to this spot . Luckily, Waynesburg has another wrestler with national exposure at the weight, should Guidi compete at 174 . Sophomore trans-fer Ryan Shank, who was an NAIA national qualifier at national powerhouse Lindsey Wilson, is in his first season at Waynesburg and has received plenty of praise from the coaching staff for his work in the preseason . Like 157, 165 has terrific depth behind whoever ends up winning the starting job . Landon Lohr, Tuck, freshman Derek Hull and sophomore Abu Kaba should make for some great competition in the practice room and fill up tournament brackets with Waynesburg names .

174 PoundsComing into this season, 174 pounds fea-tured Waynesburg’s biggest offseason loss in national runner-up Anthony Bonaven-tura . However, things got brighter when Bo-naventura returned as the team’s graduate assistant coach and Shank transferred . Whoever doesn’t get the job at 165 be-tween Guidi and Shank will likely handle things at 174 . Freshman Austin Davidson provides further depth at the weight . 184 PoundsThis is a second-straight weight where Waynesburg loses a national qualifier, as last year’s starter Cameron Fine has gradu-ated . Luckily, the Yellow Jackets bring back the man who beat Fine in the 2013 Orange/Black wrestle-offs, senior Patrick Jennings . Jennings has been the Jackets’ starting 197-pounder for three years, despite drop-ping down to compete for the 184 job last season . One of this year’s captains, Jen-nings looks to finally get his shot at the ev-eryday job this year . Davidson appears to be the primary back-up at 184 . 197 PoundsWith Jennings dropping to 184, the 197-pound job is wide open . This weight also features Waynesburg’s most intriguing new-comer: sophomore transfer Cody Klempay .

Klempay was a star at Western Pennsylvania powerhouse Canon-McMillan High School, where he won the prestigious Powerade Tournament, was a four-time AAA state qualifier and a two-time state place-winner (third and sixth) . He also won a pair of WPIAL titles before accepting a wrestling schol-arship at the University of North Carolina . Klempay became the Tar Heels’ starting heavyweight as a freshman and notched two pins before leaving UNC . The Jackets are also excited to have se-nior Gennaro Bonaventura, Anthony’s twin brother, back in the room for a fourth season. This will be his first full year with the team, as he was also a member of the Yel-low Jacket football team . 285 PoundsAnother deep weight class, Waynesburg went from having one true heavyweight last year, albeit a good one in PAC champion Greg Kumer, to as many as four by the time December rolls around . Kumer leads the group after breaking out during his sophomore campaign, his first as the team’s starter . He went 25-16 overall and is currently featured as a “Contender” on the D3Wrestle .com rankings . Joining the junior in this year’s group of 285-pounders are freshman Shane Lowman and senior Dan Mahon . Lowman enjoyed his share of high school success as a prep wrestler in the state of Maryland, while Ma-hon bumps up from 197 pounds . Mahon provides an interesting challenge to bigger heavyweights with his quickness and solid riding skills from the top position . The Jackets’ heavyweight ranks are expect-ed to grow once football season wraps up and freshman Forrest Six joins the team .

Prior to the start of the 2011-12 season, the Waynesburg University wrestling team moved into a new wrestling room . The facility is located in the renovated Captain Robert C . Wiley Armory, which used to house the local Army National Guard unit before it was moved to a newer build-ing at 500 EverGreene Drive in Waynesburg . The new home of the Jacket Mat Men features two full-size wrestling mats, five-foot high wall mats, cardio equipment and areas dedicated to stretch band and kettle bell workouts . Head coach Ron Headlee is obviously excited about the future site of his team’s practices and workouts . “We will be able to have our whole team wrestling in the live competition,” Headlee said . “In the old room we had to split into two groups because of space .” As the program’s success has grown, so has its numbers, which further facilitated the need for a larger team facility . The sixth-year head coach believes he should have an estimated 30 ath-letes in the room, which he described as a “good problem .” The Jacket wrestling team used to hold practices in a much smaller facility in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse . Obviously, Headlee believes that a brand new, up-to-date practice facility will aid in his already fruitful recruiting efforts . “Showing our room to new recruits is exciting because I believe we will have one of the nicest rooms in Division III,” Headlee said . “The University has really helped us by giving us this new room to better accommodate the numbers we now have .”

Since coming to Waynesburg before the 2008-09 season, Ron Headlee has guided the Yellow Jacket wrestling program through one the most amazing turnarounds in school athletic history .Last year’s record-setting 15-6 overall record is part of a 62-38-1 overall mark posted by Headlee . He has also led the Jackets to the best Presidents’ Ath-letic Conference (PAC) dual record (11-1) over that same stretch of any conference program .During his first six years with the squad, he guided the Jackets to their first four PAC team titles in pro-gram history and has helped develop four different All-Americans, including 2014 graduate Anthony Bo-naventura, who placed second at 174 pounds . For his efforts, Headlee has been named PAC Coach of the Year on four separate occassions .This past winter, Waynesburg won its fourth PAC team title and qualified three wrestlers for the na-tional championships, including Bonaventura, 2013 All-American Luke Lohr and senior Cameron Fine . The Jackets also claimed team titles at their home invitational and Baldwin Wallace’s John Summa Memorial Tournament . The Orange and Black went on to place third at the 17-team NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Tournament aned 19th at the na-tional championships .After taking over a team that went 0-11 in dual matches during the 2007-08 season, Headlee, along with primary assistant John Yates, rebuilt the the team from the ground up and that year’s Yellow Jackets to a 10-4 season .Included in those 10 dual wins were victories over PAC rivals Thiel and Washington & Jefferson . It was the first time in recorded conference history that that Jackets had completed the sweep as they went a perfect 7-0 against Division III opponents . The Jackets also upset Shippensburg, which was ranked 19th in the country at Division II .By the time the regular season ended, the Jackets were ranked 28th in the D-III rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) . However, the Jackets’ accomplishments weren’t limited to just those of a team variety .At the annual PAC Championships, then-freshman Alex Evanoff and then-first-year grappler Corbin Semple won conference titles at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively .Semple then joined then-sophomore Nick Garber in winning individual titles at the NCAA Division III Mid-west Regional Championships . The pair then went on to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament . Both grapplers earned an upset win over a fifth-ranked opponent, while posting identical 1-2 records at the event .For his efforts, Headlee was nominated for rookie head coach of the year at the Division III National Championships and was also inducted into the Washington/Greene Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame .

In all, Headlee’s wrestlers have earned eight NCAA Division III Midwest individual titles, won 26 PAC Wres-tler of the Week Awards, 16 PAC individual titles and taken home two PAC Outstanding Wrestler awards (Jared Roberts in 2011 and Anthony Bonaventura in 2013) . Among those honorees is 2011 graduate Gar-ber, who was a three-time Midwest Regional cham-pion and three-time national qualifier.Before turning the Jackets around, Headlee spent 13 years as a head and assistant high school coach .Most recently, Headlee was an assistant varsity and junior high coach at Waynesburg Central High School, where he worked with his now assistant head coach John Yates, who was the head coach of the Raiders until 2007 .Prior to his stint with WCHS, Headlee spent nine suc-cessful years as the head coach of the Jefferson-Morgan Rockets (1988-1997) . While there, Headlee helped guide along a man who many consider the greatest high school wrestler in the state of Penn-sylvania, Cary Kolat . Under Headlee’s guidance, Kolat went undefeated all four years that he wore a Rocket singlet .While with the Rockets, Headlee compiled an im-pressive 111-25-1 record and won five Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPI-AL) team championships . Headlee also coached a total of 24 WPIAL champions, 15 state place-winners and seven state champions .Prior to his coaching days, Headlee enjoyed tre-mendous success on the mats as a competitor .After graduating from Waynesburg Central High School in 1978, Headlee moved on to Messiah Col-lege, from which he graduated in 1982 with a de-gree in health and physical education .While wrestling for the Falcons, Headlee produced an impressive record of 101-14-1, a then-record, which ranks him ninth on the school’s current ca-reer wins list . He was an NAIA all-American for his first three years at Messiah, and was the school’s first NCAA Division III All-American in 1982 after placing fifth at the national tournament.In 1996, Headlee was inducted into the Messiah Ath-letics Hall of Fame .Before shining with the Falcons, Headlee was a three-time section champion, a WPIAL runner-up and a PIAA state qualifier for WCHS.Headlee is employed by the Jefferson-Morgan School District as a teacher and resides in Waynes-burg with his wife Karen . The couple has two sons, Drew and Ethan . Drew is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he was a four-year letterman on the wrestling team, who went on to find success on the national and international competition levels as a freestyle wrestler . He is also an assistant coach at Division I powerhouse Lehigh University . Ethan was a four-year letterman for Pitt and a national qualifier to the NCAA Division I Championships .

A familiar face returned to Ron Headlee’s staff prior to the 2014-15 season as former graduate assistant Jeff Havelka came back to the Yellow Jackets as the team’s new assistant coach .

After spending two years with the team as its GA, Havelka spent one year as the head coach at Chartiers-Houston High School, a traditionally strong program in nearby Washington County . During the 2013-14 season, Havelka led the Buc-caneers to the WPIAL team tournament and sent two of his wrestlers all the way to the prestigious PIAA state championships in Hershey, Pennsylva-nia .

Before taking his first position with the Yellow Jack-ets, Havelka was a standout student-athlete at the University of Findlay (Ohio) .

During his time with the Oilers, he was a two-time NCAA Division II national qualifier, most recently at 184 pounds in 2010, a four-year letter-winner and a two-time captain . He also excelled in the classroom and was a three-time NCAA Academic All-American .

Havelka earned his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education in 2010 from the University of Findlay and completed a master’s degree in Special Education from Waynesburg University in 2012 .

Before heading to Findlay, Havelka was a excel-lent wrestler at Burgettstown High School . During his time with the Blue Devils, he racked up 119 wins and qualified for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) championships .

Anthony Bonaventura joins the Waynesburg Uni-versity wrestling staff after spending four years as a member of the Yellow Jackets . After spending two years as a backup and tournament competi-tor, Bonaventura burst onto the scene during his junior season . He went 28-14 as the team’s starting 174-pounder, was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Cham-pionships and qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships after taking third at the Mideast Regionals .

Bonaventura blew past that first season as a start-er, when he put together one of the greatest indi-vidual efforts in Jacket program history . The Com-mack, N .Y . native went 39-5 overall and won titles at the W&J Invitational, Waynesburg Invitational and John Summa Memorial Invitational, which was hosted by Baldwin Wallace . Bonaventura

then qualified for his second-straight trip to nation-als after placing third at regionals . The then-senior made the greatest run in program history at the event by going from unseeded competitor to na-tional runner-up after upsetting the number-two and number-three seeds .

He ended his four-year collegiate career with an 87-35 overall record . Bonaventura was also a standout in the classroom . He was honored as a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American and a member of the PAC Academic Honor Roll .

Anthony is a graduate of Hauppauge High School and is the twin brother of senior Gennaro Bo-naventura .

Before the 2008-09 season, John Yates joined his good friend and long-time coaching counterpart Ron Headlee as an assistant coach on Headlee’s first staff as Waynesburg’s head man.

He is back for his seventh year with the program, as a volunteer assistant . He served as Headlee’s primary assistant over the previous six seasons .

In 2008, Yates played a major role in the program’s rebirth from years of struggle . He was rewarded for his efforts by being nominated for Assistant Coach of the Year at the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championships .

Yates came to Waynesburg after 10 years as the head coach at Waynesburg Central High School . Ironically, during part of his time as the head of the successful WCHS program, Headlee served as one of Yates’ assistant coaches .

While at the helm of the Raiders, Yates pro-duced an impressive overall record of 140-43 and coached 15 WPIAL individual champions, 20 state place-winners and six state champions, in-cluding NCAA Division I champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Coleman Scott, who wrestled at Oklahoma State .

Prior to his time as a head coach, Yates spent six seasons as a varsity assistant at WCHS and one year with the junior high program .

Yates came to Waynesburg after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989 with a degree in science education . At Pitt, Yates was a four-year letterman on the varsity wrestling team .

Prior to joining the Panthers, Yates had a celebrat-ed wrestling career at Seneca Valley High School . With the Raiders, Yates finished as high as third in the WPIAL and sixth in the state . He was also a Gre-co-Roman state champion and is a member of the Seneca Valley Wrestling Hall of Fame .

Yates currently resides in Sycamore, Pa . with his wife Dawn . The two have a son, Jake, who is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Tiger soccer team .

It was a historic seson for Waynesburg Uni-versity wrestling, which set new precedents both individually, and on the team side of things .

The Yellow Jackets set what is believed to be a program record for wins in a season af-ter going 15-6 . The Orange and Black also grabbed team titles at its home invitational and the John Summa Memorial Tourna-ment, which was hosted by Baldwin Wal-lace College . Waynesburg added its fourth Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) team title in five years and successfully defended its 2013 crown .

After qualifying three wrestlers to the NCAA Division III National Championships, Waynes-burg earned a top-20 finish (19th) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa .

Waynesburg’s individual accolades matched or even surpassed its team ac-complishments .

Four Jackets claimed PAC titles to lead Waynesburg to the team trophy . Freshman 133-pounder Filippo Crivelli got things go-ing with an upset of Thiel’s Nick Sutton in the championship tilt .

Junior Jake Vitolo also won his first champi-onship when he met Thiel’s Robert Ritschard in the 141 title bout . Ritschard had won the first four meetings between himself and the third-year Waynesburg starter . However, when it mattered most, Vitolo pulled out a 4-2 decision against his nemesis .

While Vitolo and Crivelli both earned their first conference titles this past winter, senior Luke Lohr earned his third crown at 149 pounds . The Somerset, Pennsylvania, native wasn’t challenged by his two opponents, defeating them by 13-2 major decision and pin .

Waynesburg saw one more of its own secure his first conference title, when sophomore Greg Kumer defeated Thiel’s Blake Heim 3-1 in overtime to take the 285-pound crown . That decision avenged a decision loss to Heim earlier in the year at the two team’s annual dual .

Moving on to the regional championships, Waynesburg was able to send three of its own to Iowa after Lohr, Bonaventura and

senior Cameron Fine placed in the top three of their respective weight classes . Lohr and Fine placed second at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively, while Bonaventura battled back from an early upset loss to take third place and head back to nationals .

Bonaventura ended his collegiate career with a second-place showing at 174 pounds, which is the best finish for a Jacket wrestler ever at the NCAA Division III National Cham-pionships . Lohr came one win short of claim-ing back-to-back All-American honors after going 1-2 at 149 pounds .

Along with their success on the mats, the Yel-low Jackets also excelled in the classroom . Fine, Bonaventura and junior Chris Milligan were all honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) as Scholar All-Americans . Waynesburg was also listed as an NWCA top-30 Academic team . The Jackets boasted the 20th-best team GPA in Division III (3 .31) .

Senior Anthony Bonaventura not only placed second in the nation at 174 pounds, but earned his third-straight NWCA Scholar All-American award.

Founded in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Waynesburg University is located on a traditional campus in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, with three adult centers located in the Pittsburgh region . The University is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and is one of only 23 Bonner Scholar schools in the country, offer-ing local, regional and international opportunities to touch the lives of oth-ers through service .

Offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, Waynesburg University designs its curriculum to meet the needs of today’s students . Undergraduates can choose among more than 70 programs of study, includ-ing the traditional liberal arts such as English, history, biology, and more, and innovative fields such as athletic train-ing, biblical ministries, computer foren-sics, criminal justice, forensic science, marine biology, nursing, sports informa-tion, sports management, and many others .

The University’s Graduate and Professional Studies Program, located at three convenient centers in the immediate Pittsburgh region, offers accelerated, evening programs geared for adult students in the fields of business, nursing, education, and counseling psychology .

The University’s total enrollment is approximately 2,300 students, includ-ing over 1,500 undergraduates on the Waynesburg campus and over 800 graduate and professional studies stu-

dents . Waynesburg students enjoy per-sonalized attention from highly quali-fied faculty, a well-rounded liberal arts curriculum, state-of the-art facilities, a networked campus with wireless Internet in academic and recreational settings, and Internet access in all resi-dence hall rooms .

The beautiful campus includes an award-winning campus center, per-forming arts center, and several new, apartment-style residence halls . New additions to campus include a recent-ly constructed Center for Research and Economic Development, modern additions to the dining hall and library, and a new fitness center that is acces-sible to students, faculty and alum-ni . The latest edition to the campus landscape is the magnificent Roberts Chapel . Completed in 2011, the cha-pel seats around 600 individuals and has become the centerpiece of the Waynesburg University landscape .
