sChool nICkname“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. on the Cover

DaviD James

The dean of Central Oklahoma’s coaching staff is David James, now in his 31st year atop the perennial powerhouse program and one of the premier coaches at any level of collegiate athletics.

James, a four-time All-American and two-time national champion as a wrestler at UCO, is easily the winningest coach in school history with an amazing 350-125-5 dual record against some of the top teams in the country.

He ranks fifth in NCAA Division II and 40th on all levels of college wres-

tling in all-time dual wins, has led the Bronchos to an amazing 12 national championships -- seven in NCAA Division II, five in NAIA -- and has been named national Coach of the Year seven times.

UCO has had 23 top-four national tournament finishes under James, including five runner-up showings, and the Bronchos have won 19 Divi-sion II regional titles in 23 tries.

D.J. has coached 45 national champions and 172 All-Americans at Central and his career dual record includes an amazing 294-49-1 mark against non-Division I teams.

James took control of the UCO program in 1982 and led the team to a fifth-place NAIA finish and 7-6 dual record that first year. The Bronchos asserted themselves the next year with a 11-5-1 dual finish and the first of four straight NAIA championships, winning by a 33-point margin.

UCO romped to the national title by 53 3/4 points in 1985, and made it three straight in 1986 with a narrow 7 1/4-point victory. The Bronchos made it four in a row in 1987 following a 12-5 dual season.

The championship streak ended in 1988 with a narrow runner-up fin-ish, but James took UCO back to the top in its final year with the NAIA in 1989 with a 13-point margin of victory.

The Bronchos made the move up to NCAA Division II the next season and were runners-up in both 1990 and ‘91. The breakthrough season came in 1992 when UCO went 14-1 in duals and captured its first-ever Division II championship.

The Bronchos won a second consecutive title in 1993 and made it three in a row in 1994 with an overwhelming 61 3/4-point victory.

James led UCO to its fourth consecutive crown in 1995 as the Bronchos rolled up 148 points, the second-highest point total in NCAA Division II history. Central fell just short of a fifth straight title in 1996, finishing second by a narrow margin, and then was third in 1997.

The Bronchos placed fourth in 1998 and then crowned two national champions in finishing third in 1999. Another runner-up finish followed in 2000 and the Bronchos tied for third in 2001 after going 13-2-1 in duals.

UCO made it back on top in 2002, putting together a stellar 15-1 dual record and ending a six-year championship drought by crowning four individual champions in winning its 13th national team title.

James and the Bronchos repeated as title winners in 2003, going 18-1 in duals and finishing with three individual champions. Central finished third in its bid for a third straight title in 2004.

UCO had its 15-year string of Midwest Regional titles

ended in 2005 en route to an 11th-place national tournament showing, but D.J.’s troops bounced back with a fourth-place national showing in 2006.

The Bronchos captured their 15th title in 2007, following a 15-4 dual season with the Midwest Regional crown and a stirring national tourna-ment performance in beating favored Nebraska-Kearney by 16 points.

UCO was 14-6 in duals, won another regional title and finished sixth nationally in 2007-08 and went 11-6-1 with a regional runner-up finish and another sixth-place national showing in 2008-09.

The Bronchos went 8-5 in duals and fin-ished 15th nationally in 2009-10 and were 13th in 2010-11 after going 15-4 in duals.

UCO had another young squad last year, but still managed a 9-5 dual record and then won its first regional crown since 2008 before tying for 10th in the national tourna-ment with three All-Americans.

James graduated UCO with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1980 and spent one year as a UCO graduate assistant. David then served as an assistant coach at Edmond Memorial High School before becoming UCO’s ninth head coach in 1982.

James ranks 13th on the school’s career win list with a 116-16 record. The Del City native was UCO’s first four-time All-American, finishing third as a freshman and second as a sophomore before winning back-to-back NAIA national titles.

He is a member of five hall of fames -- the NAIA Hall of Fame (1988), the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame (1991), the NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame (2005), the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2007) and the Del City High School Hall of Fame (2008).

David is married (Cherrie) and has two daughters (Hayden and Ryann).

Serving as a graduate assistant coach for Central Oklahoma in 2012-13 is former state high school standout Chris Hacker.

Hacker was a two-time state champion for perennial power El Reno High School while also earn-ing All-America honors seven times.

He continued his wrestling career at Nebraska, spending five years with the Huskers while battling an assortment of injuries that limited his career on the mat.

Hacker earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from NU. He’s working on his master’s in psychology at UCO.

In his third as a graduate assistant coach with the Central Oklahoma program is Dustin Finn, who ended his career with the Bronchos as the most decorated heavyweight in school history.

Finn is UCO’s only three-time heavyweight All-American, finishing second twice and third once while ending his career with an 89-17 record that ranks ninth on the school’s all-time winning per-centage list (.840). He’s also tied for fourth in career falls with 35.

Dustin was a two-sport standout for the Bronchos, lettering four years in football and starting his last two years on the offensive line. He was the Lone Star Conference North Division Offensive Lineman of the Year as a senior in 2008 when he also played in the NCAA Division II all-star football game.

Finn went 6-1 as a reserve heavyweight in 2006-07 and came back as a sophomore the next year to go 29-6 with 13 falls, winning the regional title and making it to the national finals before losing a 4-1 decision.

Finn repeated as regional champion and national runner-up in 2008-09 while finishing 26-4 with 12 falls, dropping a close 6-4 decision in the championship match. He came back with a 28-6 campaign as a senior, coming in second in the regional and third in the national tournament after losing a last-second match in the semifinals.

An All-State pick in both football and wrestling at Westmoore High School, Finn’s father (John in 1979) and brother (Chris in 2006) both earned All-America honors at UCO.

125 PoundSThe opening weight in the lineup is where the shift starts, with junior

Dustin Reed looking to drop down after qualifying for the national tournament at 133 last year.

Reed went 18-9 after coming to the Bronchos at the semester break last year and would definitely be a prime All-America candidate at this weight. UCO also returns sophomore Ryan Brooks, who finished 27-19 while starting all season as a true freshman, with redshirt freshman Cooper Finch and several others around to add good depth.

Coach James Says: “The big key is to see if Dustin coming down will work. He did a nice job for us at 133, but he wants to go down and it makes us stronger. He’s obviously going to try and make the move and we want to get it done early. Ryan did some good things here last year and learned a lot, but he’s a possible redshirt. We’ve got good numbers here, so our depth is good, but there are a lot of unknowns.”

133 PoundSTwo All-Americans appear set to battle for this position, with senior

Trison Graham returning to action after missing most of last season to injury and junior Casy Rowell

poised to move down from 141.Graham was a seventh-place national finisher at this weight two years ago and was 9-2

with seven bonus-point wins last season before being forced out of ac-tion.

R o w e l l w o n 3 1 matches as the starter at 125 in 2009-10, red-shirted the next season and returned at 141 last year. He placed fifth in the national meet to cap a 31-12 season and is eager to move up the medal ladder at a new

weight.Junior Dustin Reed

would complicate matters if he elects to stay at this weight, while junior letterman Austin McNatt and junior transfer Jordan McGuire provide more depth.

Coach James Says: “Trison had a disappointing injury last year and it took it’s toll, but hopefully he’s back. Casy’s a returning All-American who won 31 matches last year and is ready to take it to the next level. He can make the weight, so we’ll just have to see how it falls out.”

141 PoundSJunior All-American Casy Rowell is scheduled to drop down a weight

and UCO is looking forward to having sophomore Ben Morgan in the lineup here as he moves from 149, where he was a part-time starter in 2010-11 before redshirting last year.

Morgan competed in four open tournaments at 149 while redshirting, going 17-3 with 10 bonus-point wins, and he’s expected to have a major impact with his big-point ability.

Junior Austin Quinton is a two-year letterman who provides plenty of experience and will help out.

Coach James Says: “Casy may stay here and Ben has loads of potential. If Ben can get to 141 I think he’ll be in the mix nationally. He’s an exciting wrestler to watch and scores lots of points. Obviously

ncertainly surrounds several weights and depth is pre-carious at others, but there are plenty of reasons to think Central Oklahoma will contend for its 16th national title in 2012-13.

The Bronchos won a regional championship before finishing 10th nationally last year, with five returning or previous All-Americans and three returning national qualifiers dotting the roster.

But who will be where is the main question as several of those veterans are poised to drop down a weight class, a situation that should pay big dividends at the end of the season.

“If guys go down a weight we have to see if they can handle it,” said 31st-year head coach David James. “We want to address it early in the season, but that’s what these guys want to do and it’ll make us better. I wondered last year if we had guys at the right weight and that’s what we’re trying to figure out.”

The weight shifts are all coming in the first five weights as UCO is mostly set in the upper part of the lineup, though lack of proven depth is a concern at some of those positions.

Despite these question marks, the Bronchos still expect to be in the title hunt come March.

“Our expectations are obviously high, but we need to do something at the end,” said James, who has led the Bronchos to 350 dual wins and 12 of their 15 national championships. “I was disappointed last year at the national tournament with the way we performed and we need to change that.

“On paper we’ve got a good lineup, but we’ve got to do something with it. We’ve got to prove it. There’s not a lot of gap between the top 10 teams, so when you get to the end you’ve got to step up and perform.”

UCO returns two All-Americans from last year in senior Tanner Keck and ju-nior Casy Rowell, while seniors Trison Graham and Kelly Henderson and junior Cory Dauphin were national placers the year before.

Add in a trio of returning national qualifiers in juniors Dustin Reed and Cody Dauphin and sophomore Chris Watson and it’s easy to see that the Bronchos have the experience needed to be a top contender.

“It’s one of those deals where at every weight but one or two we’ve got some experienced guys who have been to the national tournament and had success,” James said. “We might have to be patient to see what’s going to be our best lineup with all the guys who want to go down a weight, but I think we’ve got a chance to be really good.”

A new twist this season will be UCO’s involvement in a conference for the first time as the Bronchos are one of six teams that make up the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which includes defending national champion Nebraska-Kearney.

A conference dual champion will be crowned and UCO will also host the first-ever MIAA Wrestling Championships.

“It’s our first time to be in a conference and there’s some excitement to that,” James said. “It’s a new deal for us and we’re hosting the first tournament, so that gives us something else to shoot for this season.”

Casy is a proven guy and we know what he can do, so if he decides to stay here it’ll be interesting to see what happens.”

149 PoundSYet another weight where the Bronchos are in a wait-and-see situation

in regards to who will be in the lineup.Junior Cory Dauphin has started at 157 the past two years, earning

All-America honors as a freshman and making it back to nationals last year, but he plans to move to 149 and would be a national title contender.

Dauphin will face stiff competition from juniors Jordan Basks and Kaleb Cradduck. Basks was a third-place All-American in the junior college ranks last year and Cradduck has seen part-time starting duty each of the past two seasons.

Coach James Says: “This is another weight where we’ll just have to see how it all shakes out. Cory is trying to get here and I think it’s the right weight for him. He had a disappointing national tourna-ment last year and is looking to make up for that. Jordan is really explosive and will have some-thing to say here and Kaleb can’t be overlooked. All three are capable and would do well for us and all three have a redshirt year left.”

157 PoundSJunior Cory Dauphin would obviously

be the favorite to retain his starting spot if he decides to stay at this weight, but redshirt freshman Colton Gallo would push the issue if that happened and he’s the clear front-runner if Dauphin goes down to 149.

Injuries have hampered Gallo the last two years and he’s eager to get on the mat to show what he can do, with the Bronchos high on his ability to be a mainstay in the lineup.

Senior Jordan Gibbon and a trio of freshmen supply plenty of depth.

Coach James Says: “It’s possible Cory stays here, but we also feel good about Colton. He’s a grinder and a winner, but the concern is he hasn’t had a lot of mat time. I think his style will make up for that and we just need to get him on the mat and keep him healthy. We’ve got some good numbers here for depth and some of them will have a chance to help.”

165 PoundSThe first weight that apparently won’t be affected by individuals

moving around will feature a returning national qualifier in sophomore Chris Watson.

Watson went 27-16 with seven falls a year ago in making it to na-tionals and he pulled off a first-round upset there before suffering two straight losses, but that experience should help propel him to a new level this winter.

Junior letterman Zach Aylor saw extended action last season and can help out here, with junior transfer Da’Koda Basks also in the mix.

Coach James Says: “Chris is back and hopefully what happened last year will springboard him to a big season. He’s got a good attitude and is a hard worker who has to take his experience from the national tournament and take the next step. Zach can also go at this weight and there’s a couple of other guys who can help if needed.”

174 PoundSUCO will have stability at this weight as well with senior Kelly

Henderson entrenched as the starter.

2012-13 SeaSon outlook

CoryDauphin

Henderson took over at 174 midway through his sophomore cam-paign en route to earning All-America honors and he made it back to the national tournament last year despite battling a series of injuries all season. A sub-par performance at nationals has this gritty veteran ready to make a big push in his final go-around.

Junior transfer Kyle Buckley and freshman Garrett Henshaw will be the back ups.

Coach James Says: “Kelly had a disappointing national tournament after being an All-American the year before, but he had some injuries that held him back. He has some big goals, expects a lot of himself and will do a great job at this weight class. Garrett is a strong young guy with good work habits and Kyle can go here as well.”

184 PoundSSenior Tanner Keck is once again the man here and the returning All-

American will undoubtedly be a top national championship contender.A three-time national qualifier at this weight, Keck finally broke

through on the big stage last year with a fourth-place finish that capped a 27-9 season. He’s the second-highest

placer back and will definitely push for the gold medal in his final try.

Depth is an issue, however, with Keck the only true 184-pounder listed on the roster.

Coach James Says: “Tanner’s the highest national placer we have back and he’s been to the national tournament three times, so we know what to expect from him. He wants to finish his career the right way and he obviously should be one of the main guys

contending for the national championship. We don’t have a lot of depth here, which is a

concern.”

197 PoundSThe Bronchos have plenty of questions here, with

197 the only spot in the lineup featuring inexperienced and unproven individuals.

Redshirt freshman Carson Mathews appears to be the front-runner after gaining some experience last year, with sophomore newcomers Znick Ferrell and Ryan McCurdy also in the running for the starting

spot.UCO needs one of the three to separate from the pack and establish

himself as the clear leader.Coach James Says: “We have some question marks here. Carson

got some mat time while redshirting last year, but he’s still developing, as is Ryan. Znick had a very successful high school career at 215 and is gung ho to be back on the mat. He shows a lot of potential.”

HeavyWeigHtReady to anchor the lineup for the third straight year is junior Cody

Dauphin, a two-time national qualifier who appears poised to take the next step.

Dauphin went 28-13 with seven falls last year in making it back to the national tournament and he won one match there, but the Bronchos need for him to break through and become an All-American this season.

Senior letterman Keegan Hulsey is the lone back-up.Coach James Says: “Cody’s more dedicated and hungry to do

something on a national level and we need him to. He’s had some good moments over the last two years and we’re counting on him to come through at the end.”

2012-13 UCO Wrestling

2011-12 season ReviewUCO edged Findlay 22-15 in its first consolation match as Cory

Dauphin had a 44-second fall and Edison a 10-0 major decision, with major decisions by Rowell and Cory Dauphin paving the way for a 23-13 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Bronchos lost another tight match in the fifth-place bout against Augustana, dropping two one-point decisions and another in overtime as the Vikings prevailed 16-15.

UCO finally made its home debut on Jan. 12 when it hosted Nebraska-Kearney and the Bronchos won eight of 10 matches to rout the eventual national champion Lopers 25-6. Rowell had a major decision, while 125 Ryan Brooks, 133 Dustin Reed, Watson, Henderson, Keck, Edison and Cody Dauphin all won by two points or less.

Central followed that big win with a 29-12 road rout over Ouachita Baptist be-hind a pin by Watson and major decisions by Reed, Corley, Henderson, Edison and Cody Dauphin.

The Bronchos went back on the road the next week and got major decisions from Corley and Edison in a 23-9 victory over Colo-rado State-Pueblo on Jan. 19 before dropping a 28-10 decision to Adams State the next day.

The Bronchos lost their second straight dual five days later, tying Oklahoma

City 18-18 as the two teams split 10 matches before the Stars won on criteria.

UCO had its second home dual on Feb. 2 and rolled over Central Missouri 41-10 behind pins by 157 Kaleb Cradduck and Watson, then had six placers at the Missouri Valley Open three days later.

The Bronchos won their last road dual on Feb. 8, clubbing Newman 36-6 as Reed and Edison had falls, then ended the regular season with a 25-12 triumph over Ouachita Baptist behind Reed and Watson pins.

UCO hosted the Super Regional Two Championships Feb. 25-26 and claimed that team title by 25.5 points over Findlay.

Corley was the lone individual winner for the Bronchos, while Rowell, Henderson and Keck all finished second. Cory Dauphin, Edison and Cody Dauphin came in third and Reed and Watson both took fourth as the Bronchos qualified nine for the national tournament.

Central suffered through a tough second-round outing at the na-tional tournament and ended up tied for 10th, getting All-America efforts from Keck (fourth), Rowell (fifth) and Corley (fifth).

rogress was made, but Central Oklahoma still didn’t perform like long-time head coach David James ex-pected in 2011-12.

The 15-time national champion Bronchos won their first re-gional title since 2008, but UCO had some frustrating dual losses in a 9-5 season and ended up tied for 10th in the NCAA Division national tournament with three All-Americans.

“I expected more from this team and that was a little disappoint-ing,” James said. “We were still young and not very experienced at some weights and we had some injury problems at times during the year, but those are just excuses.

“We expect to be in the national championship hunt every year and anytime that doesn’t happen it’s a disappointing season.”

The Bronchos had a strong showing at the sea-son-opening Oklahoma City Open on Nov. 6, fin-ishing with 11 top-four finishers. Tanner Keck was the lone champion at 184, while 174 Kelly Hen-derson and 197 Jarrett Edison were runners-up.

UCO went to the Loper Open two weeks later and had 11 placers in two differ-ent brackets, led by cham-pionship efforts from Cory Dauphin (157) and Cody Dauphin (heavyweight) in the Amateur Bracket.

The Bronchos opened the dual season Dec. 1 at Fort Hays State and got an early fall from 133 Trison Graham in jumping out to an 18-6 lead, but the Tigers won the last four matches to rally for a stunning 21-18 victory.

UCO stayed in Hays, Kan. for the Fort Hays State Open two days later and had six top-four finishers, with Keck’s runner-up showing leading the way.

The Bronchos ended their first semester schedule at the New-man Invitational on Dec. 11 and won that one-day tournament for the second straight year behind eight top-four placers. Gra-ham, Edison and Cody Dauphin captured individual titles, with Edison’s finals win clinching the team crown.

Central didn’t return to action until Jan. 7-8 when it traveled to Springfield, Ill. for the NWCA Division II National Duals.

James’ crew opened the tournament with a 29-10 win over Northern State as 165 Chris Watson had a fall while 141 Casy Rowell, 149 Ky Corley, Cory Dauphin, Keck and Edison all recorded major decisions.

The Bronchos lost a pair of one-point matches in dropping a 26-15 decision to St. Cloud State in the quarterfinals before bouncing back with two consolation wins.
