In his 12 seasons as the head coach of the UW-Stevens Point wrestling program, Johnny Johnson has

established a very successful coaching resume.

Johnson enters his 13th season as the Pointers’ head coach and 17th year overall in the UW-Stevens

Point program in 2010-11. This will mark Johnson’s 25th year in the college coaching ranks. He has

coached 45 wrestlers in the national meet, and boasts a 54-18-1 WIAC dual meet record. Johnson

earned his 100th career dual meet victory at UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 3, 2009. Johnson is only the

second head coach in UWSP history to tally 100 victories and trails Marty Loy’s 125 career victories

for fi rst all-time with 117.

Johnson guided six wrestlers to the national meet in 2007 where the Pointers fi nished 10th. UW-

Stevens Point has fi nished in the top 11 in the national meet fi ve of the last eight years. The Pointers

have also fi nished in the top three in the WIAC every season during Johnson’s tenure, including an

undefeated season in WIAC dual meets in 2003-04.

Johnson has coached several successful individuals during his term, including two-time All-American Ben Engelland in 2009-10.

Overall, Johnson has trained 22 All-Americans, including 19 in the last eight years. He has taken wrestlers to the national meet in

every one of his 11 seasons. Additionally, Johnson has had 19 NWCA Scholar All-Americans including Mike Hayes who was the

2006 WIAC Scholar Athlete of the year.

Johnson has also trained three national champions. Yan White was a three-time national fi nalist who won the national title in 2002.

Cody Koenig and Brad Marten claimed national titles in 2003, when the Pointers achieved a school record third place fi nish at the

national meet.

Johnson also worked closely with 3-time Olympian and 1996 Silver Medalist Dennis Hall. Hall a former UW-Stevens Point assis-

tant coach was joined in the corner by Johnson during the 2004 Olympic trials and on the trip to Athens, Greece.

Prior to becoming head coach, Johnson served as the Pointers’ top assistant and the state coach for the Wisconsin Wrestling Fed-

eration. Johnson’s strong technical background is the cornerstone to his coaching philosophy.

Before coming to UW-Stevens Point, Johnson served as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota for eight seasons. There

he was instrumental in developing 18 All-Americans, 10 Big Ten Champions, and a No. 1 dual team ranking in 1994.

Johnson has worked with some of the nation’s top coaches at every level, including

Stan Abel at Oklahoma, J. Robinson at Minnesota, and Marty Loy at UW-Stevens

Point.

Johnson wrestled collegiately at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a two-

time Division I All-American for the Sooners while compiling 112-22-2 record. Af-

ter college, he gained considerable international experience as a member of three

U.S. National teams and an alternate to the 1988 U.S. Olympic team.

Having completed his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism at Oklahoma and his

Master’s in Education at UW-Stevens Point, Johnson teaches Adventure Educa-

tion in the School of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics at UW-Stevens Point

and coordinates Adventure Education minor, which he helped developed for the

school of HESA.

UW-Stevens Point’s all-time winningest wrestler, Yan White is in his

seventh season on the coaching staff and sixth year as the team’s head

assistant coach after serving one year as a student assistant.

White is one of two wrestlers in school history to compete in the national championship match three straight years,

winning the title in 2001 and finishing runner-up the following two years. White was a three-time WIAC champion

and compiled a 103-15 career record for the best winning percentage in school history. He was the WIAC wrestler of

the meet in 2001 and 2002.

An Antigo native, White was UW-Stevens Point’s male athlete of the year in an individual sport in 2001 and 2003. Yan

lives in Mosinee with his wife, Tori, and son Trig.

Yan WhiteHead Assistant Coach

Jake Wozniak begins his second season as an assistant with the Pointers in

2010-11.

A four year letterwinner for the Pointers, Jake turned in the most impressive

season of his career his final season at 165 pounds, boasting a 34-6 record on

his way to qualifying for his second NCAA Championship. Jake was the

WIAC Champion at 165 pounds and was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

For his career, Jake posted 78 wins including 20-plus wins his last two seasons. A two-time state qualifier in high school, he posted a

career mark of 118-19 at Stanley-Boyd High School.

A three-time national qualifier, Burdick lends his experience to the middle weight classes. Burdick was an All-American in 2005 with a seventh place finish at nationals while posting a 31-10 overall record. He completed his four-year career with an 86-44 overall record. Burdick was the outstanding wrestler at the 2005 WIAC championships after winning the 141-pound conference title.

Joel lives in Stevens Point with his wife, Nikki, and son, Zac.

Joel BurdickAssistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator

Chris begins his third season as an assistnt coach with the Pointers

after finishing his career as a four-year letterwinner for the Pointers in

2008.

Chris tallied 17 victories his senior season and placed second at the

WIAC championshps, earning second team all-conference honors. For his career, Chris finished with a record of

52-61 over four seasons, posting two 17-win season totals.

Chris BrownAssistant Coach

Nick Estep begins his first season with the Pointers as student assistant coach and strength & conditioning coordinator.

In three seasons with the Pointers wrestling at 197 pounds, Estep tal-lied 14 wins. Prior to joining the Pointers in 2007, he wrestled at

Concordia University, compiling a 15-18 record his freshman year. At Racine Case High School, Estep was a three sport athlete who was a

two-time state qualifier and a two-time sectional champion. He earned all-conference honors in football and was named the captain of both the football team and the wrestling team.

final season with the Pointers. Prior to UWSP, Karl was a four-time letterwinner at Auburndale High School where he was a state runner-up his senior season after finishing with a 34-7 record. Karl also won two conference champion-ships at 152 pounds.

Karl is currently working on his bachelors degree in Health Promotion and Wellness and resides in Stevens Point.

125- The 1st of 8 returning starters

is here at 125. National Qualifi er Joe

Mileski (Jr.-Gladstone, MI) looks to get

the Pointers started in the right direc-

tion. Joe worked exceptionally hard

this summer and enters the 2010-2011

season with focus. Voted a team

captain this year, Joe will pro-

vide strong leadership for his

teammates. Backing Joe up at

125 will be freshmen Lance Fabry

(Ashwaubenon) and Brad Kuehn

(Hugo, MN). Brad was a MN state

qualifi er while Lance compiled 124

career wins for Ashwaubenon High

School.

133- Sophomore Jordan Kust (Sha-

wano) returns here after having an

impressive freshman season. One of

three freshmen to start for the Pointers

last season, Jordan tallied over 20 wins

and competed in every varsity match.

As a competitor Jordan exhibits great

poise and technique. His work ethic

and desire will help push him to the

next level this season.

141- Another returning starter as

a freshman will be at 141 in Mark

Puckhaber (West De Pere). Mark’s

position is rivaled by none when out

on the mat. He returns this year much

stronger than before which is

evidence of his hard work in the

summer. Puck is motivated to make

this a break-through season for him-

self. Pushing Mark for the starting

role will be Sophomore Shane Sweeney

(Madison-Edgewood). Shane also has

a tremendous work ethic and is willing

to do what it takes to get better. Hav-

ing accumulated a handful of varsity

matches last year, Shane is no stranger

to competing at the varsity level. Also

battling for varsity matches will be

sophomores Lucas McGann (Baraboo)

and Pat Conrad (Morton Grove, IL).

McGann was a state qualifi er in high

school while Conrad garnered all-Con-

ference honors his senior year. Both

had several matches last year in open

tournaments for the Pointers.

149- Senior captain Kris Magruder

(Racine) will be back at 149. Kris has

all the attributes to become and All-

American for the Pointers this season.

His work ethic and desire to improve

is unparalleled. Not only has Kris

been a three year starter

prior to this year,

he has tallied

some key wins for the Pointers includ-

ing an 8-6 win over eventual NCAA

Champ Matt Mauseth in 2009. Last

season Kris began the year with an

impressive 11-0 record before hitting

a very rough schedule. But, Kris is

determined to make his senior year his

best. Backing Kris up at 149 is sopho-

more Kory Kleuskens (Freedom) and

freshman Ben Thome (Oconto). Kory

has a wide open style with the potential

to gain quite a bit of varsity experience

this year. He is a relentless competitor

who has a very bright future for UWSP.

Thome fi nished third in the WIAA

state tournament as a senior and ac-

cumulated 135 victories in high school.

Puckhaber could also see some time at

149 earlier in the season.

157-This will be the fi rst weight class

to be contested by someone new. The

2010 starter, Andrew Dilworth, is back,

but he will be moving up a couple of

weight classes. The front runner here

is sophomore Ben Strobel (Neenah).

Ben also moves up from 149 to com-

pete at this weight class. Ben’s athletic

ability coupled with his aggressive style

make him a very dangerous competi-

tor. Having fi nished 6th in the tough

Pointer Open last year, Ben looks to

make 2010-11 a season to prove he can

compete with anyone. He was a 2-time

state placer in high school before com-

ing to UWSP. Freshman Bill Langford

(Westosha) will contend for time here.

Bill was a state qualifi er last year com-

piling a 39-6 record his senior year.

165- Sophomore National qualifi er

Jordan Schulte (Mosinee) will hold

down this spot for the Pointers. Jordan

was one of three Pointers to work J.

Robinson Intensive camps during the

summer affording him an opportunity

improve tremendously while working

with many Division I wrestlers. Jordan

is determined to bring some hardware

home from the national tournament in

2011. There’s a chance Jordan will be

pushed by junior Dan Wierzba (Ste-

vens Point). Dan is coming off a sea-

son that was ended by injury last year.

He may begin the year battling for the

spot at 174, but he could end up back

down at 165.

174- Many Pointers have a legitimate

chance of earning the starting role

here. Senior captain Andrew Dilworth

(Greendale) leads the pack early in the

year after 174 is left open by NCAA

qualifi er Chris Karl. Dilworth has the

most experience as a starter and takes

full advantage of it when competing.

He has a tremendous work ethic and

looks to complete his college career

on a high note.

Another senior battling for this spot

will be Coulter Nyenhuis (Gladstone,

MI). Coulter is another upper-class-

man with a great work ethic who looks

to fi nish his career in a positive man-

ner. Sophomores Ryan Conat (New

London) and Craig Brandvold (Merrill)

plan to compete strongly for the varsity

spot as well. Conat tallied 121 wins

in high school for New London while

Brandvold fi nished his senior season

42-5. Both are tireless workers and are

certain to wrestle many matches this

year for the Pointers.

184- Ben Engelland (Neenah) returns

at 184 after winning the WIAC tourna-

ment and earning all-American hon-

ors for the second time last season.

A three-time national qualifi er, Ben

fi nished 5th in 09 and 4th in 2010. He

enters this year with his focus on one

thing…a national championship. Ben

is a very talented wrestler who uses his

skills wisely. He has mat sense that

takes years to develop for most while

some never do. Ben was also voted

team captain for the second time. Any

of the aforementioned 174 pounders

could provide strong support at 184.

197- This could be an interesting battle

for the starting role as there are two

returning starters here. 2010 starter

Brandon Jochem (Hustisford) is back

for his senior campaign after fi nish-

ing 4th at the WIAC tournament.

Brandon has the capability to win big

matches when he wrestles with con-

sistency. The other returning starter

here is senior Chad Gregory (Lawton,

OK). Chad took last season off after

he and his wife, Kim, had a daughter.

Chad fi nished 2nd in the conference in

2008 at 285 and was on pace to have

another good fi nish in 2009 when he

broke his hand just before the WIAC

tournament. His 41 career wins places

him third on the team with current

wrestlers behind Engelland (82) and

Magruder (47). Sophomore Dustin

Wozniak (Stanley) will also fi ght for the

varsity spot here. Plagued with injuries

last year as a freshman, Dustin com-

piled over 100 wins in high school fi n-

ishing his career with a 4th place state

fi nish. Dylan Clucas (Stevens Point)

joins the team here after transferring

from Mid-State Technical College. Dy-

lan is a very coachable athlete who will

improve tremendously during his fi rst

year in the Pointer room.

285- Three big men will battle to

hold down this spot vacated by Bret

Oswald’s graduation. Senior Steve

Wozniak (Neillsville), sophomore Matt

Cuadra (Oshkosh), and freshman Jeff

Erickson (Taylor) will all vie for the

starting role at heavyweight. Steve has

accumulated over 30 varsity wins for

the Pointers and ended last year with

8 falls. He moves back to this weight

class after dropping to 197 in 09-10.

Cuadra is a big athletic wrestler who

could do some serious damage if he

is able to stay healthy. He joined the

team a little late last year due to playing

football, but he will be totally com-

mitted to wrestling this season. Matt

was a two-time state qualifi er in high

school, fi nishing 3rd his senior season.

Jeff Erickson rounds out the competi-

tion here at heavyweight. Erickson

was a WIAA state champion in 2009

and a runner-up in 2008 while tally-

ing over 140 career victories in high

school. Jeff ’s father, Jim, was UWSP’s

fi rst NCAA all-American.

John E. Roberts Wrestling RoomOn January 15, 2010, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point honored the

founder of UWSP wrestling, Coach John Roberts, by naming its newly-

renovated wrestling facility in his honor.

“We are proud to honor Coach Roberts through the naming of this facility

for his accomplishments, hard work, leadership and outstanding charac-

ter,” said Athletic Director Frank O’Brien. “What a wonderful opportunity

we have to capture the spirit of Pointer wrestling for the past, present

and future generations of fans and alumni. We want everyone to feel the

sense of pride and tradition we have in Pointer Athletics and the wrestling

program and there is no better example than John Roberts for what this

facility represents.”

The facility renovation and naming in honor of John Roberts is part of a

recent successful campaign at UWSP aimed at showcasing the university’s

storied tradition in athletics. Fundraising for this project started in the fall

of 2009 and all of the funds from the campaign were used to showcase

the recognition of Coach Roberts, renovation and enhancement of the

wrestling practice facility and wrestling program enhancements.

John Roberts served as the founder and head coach at UWSP, then known

as Central State College, in the inaugural 1951 season. He also served

as the dean of men for the college, started the wrestling program at P.J.

Jacobs High School in Stevens Point, and served as the executive director

for the WIAA for almost three decades.

Johnny Johnson, current Pointer men’s wrestling coach, stated his excite-

ment about the campaign.

“I am very excited about this project on many levels. It will strengthen an

already nationally recognized program by improving facilities and increas-

ing exposure” said Johnson. “It has brought out great support from our

friends, family and alumni. And most importantly, we are able to recog-

nize an outstanding individual and icon of the wrestling community, John

Roberts.”

When heavy rains and the rising water of the

Wisconsin River that runs through Stevens Point

threatened homes in the area during the fall of 2010,

the Pointer wrestling team sprang into action.

The Pointers spent countless hours working with

other volunteers filling sandbags to help those in dan-
