Parade Marshal: STORY BOOK CHARACTERSIn honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Germantown
Community Library, The Friends of the Library receivedfunding from the Germantown Tourism/CommunityBetterment Committee to sponsor the Story Book
characters as parade marshals
for the 2013 ChristmasFestival parade. Volunteersfrom Youth Futures will assistthe Friends. Characters thatare scheduled to appear are:Arthur, Clifford, Cat in the
Hat, Curious George, Elmo,Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Minnie
and Mickey Mouse, Raggedy Ann and Andy, Snoopy, SpiderMan and the Grinch. The Story Book characters will walkin the parade and stroll around the library afterwards. Also, the Library Board has approved a 'Win a Brick' contest. The 5 winners will receive a commemorative 4 x 8 brick
installed in the outdoor patio off the children's library.Bricks will be engraved with the name or message of thewinner's choice. Sign up begins at the Librarys ChristmasFestival display, and continues until Dec 17.
The 50th Anniversary was made possible when long-time Germantown resident and former bank presidentEmma Duerrwaechter surprised the community bydonating $30,000 for a building to be used asGermantowns first library. Born in 1881, Emma grew upand attended school in Germantown. She followed herfather, Philip G. Duerrwaechter, into the family banking
business. In 1923,
Emma was voted directorand bank president. She
was known asWisconsins FirstLady of Banking, and remainedpresident of thebank until 1959.She passed away in1969 at the age of87.
Germantownsfirst library wasbuilt on landdonated by theG e r m a n t o w n
Volunteer Fire
Department. With Emma Duerrwaechters generousdonation, an 1,800 square foot library was built on ParkAvenue near Firemans Park and opened in December of1963. Initially the new library had about 2,000 holdingsand was open for 20 hours per week. By the late 1970s,
the librarys holdings had grown to 19,000 and morespace was needed to provide library service forGermantowns growing population. To this day, theformer library still stands at Firemans Park and housesthe offices of the Germantown Volunteer Fire Company.
By 1980, Germantowns population had increaseddramatically to 10,731. The Duerrwwaechter MemorialLibrary on Park Street had outgrown its 1,800 squarefoot building. In a 1981 referendum, taxpayers approvedan 8,800 square foot library on Village property offMequon Road. When the new library opened in July of1982, it had over 19,000 holdings and annual circulation
of 52, 398.Over the next 20 years, the Village of Germantowns
population continued to grow, as did library usage. Forexample, between 1987 and 1996, circulation increasedby 61%. In the 2000 census, Germantowns populationincreased to 18,260. By the end of 2001, the librarysholdings had increased to 83,896, and annual circulationreached an all-time high of 202,720.
In 1998, initial approval was given for a newexpandable library facility to be built to the west of thecurrent library. The third Germantown Library buildingopened in 2002. This 26,000 square foot building can beexpanded by 13,000 square feet in the future.
Today, the library has over 200,000 holdings andannual circulation exceeding 300,000.

Traci Gentilli, instructor. This project would not be possible
without the cooperation of the graphicdesign teacher and students, the Chamber ofCommerce, the Express News and theparticipating local business sponsors.
