    Biographies of Speakers

    Laureen K. Van Norman, Presiding Judge

    Judge Van Norman is a graduate of University of NebraskaLincoln (BA, social work) and University of

    Nebraska College of Law (JD). She is a former Legal Counsel to the Nebraska Department of Labor. JudgeVan Norman is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association: past Chair of Government Practice

    Committee; past member, Executive Board of Women and the Law Section; past member, Supreme

    Court Gender Bias Task Force; current member of the Judicial Branch Education Board and Curriculum

    Committee; the Supreme Court's Committee on Self-represented Litigants; and the Supreme Court's

    Technology Committee.

    J. Michael Fitzgerald, Judge

    Judge Fitzgerald is a graduate of University of Notre Dame (BS Business Administration); Georgetown

    University Law Center (JD); Creighton University (Certificate of Completion, Paramedic Training

    Program). He has been admitted to practice: Nebraska Supreme Court, United States District Court for

    the District of Nebraska, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, United States Tax Court.

    Julie Shipman-Burns, Attorney

    Julie Shipman-Burns is the managing partner of McCord & Burns Law Firm, LLP, in Lincoln, Nebraska

    where her practice focuses on representation of claimants involved in personal injury, wrongful deathand workers compensation claims. Julie grew up in rural Nebraska and attended Waverly High School

    in Waverly, Nebraska. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University

    in 1987 and her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, College of Law in 1990.

    Charles L. Kuper, Attorney

    Charles L. Kuper is a partner at Larson, Kuper & Wenninghoff focused on the defense of workers

    compensation matters for employers and insurance carriers. Mr. Kuper routinely represents employers

    before the Nebraska Workers Compensation Court, the Nebraska Court of Appeals and the Nebraska

    Supreme Court. As part of his practice, Mr. Kuper also presents to employers and insurance carriers

    regarding workers compensation law and the practical application of that law to their business. He is a

    member of the Nebraska State Bar Association and earned his law degree, cum laude, from Creighton

    University School of Law.

    David J. Carter, PhD

    Dr. Carter is a Professor in the Counselor Education program at the University of Nebraska Omaha. He

    is the Past President of the Nebraska Counseling Association and is a Grant Reviewer for the Department

    of Education. He serves on the Professional Standards Committee for the American Counseling

    Association. He has just published a relationship book, Love with Intention, and is completing his

    second book titled, Practical Aspects of Transactional Analysis and Egograms: A Handbook for Couples

    and the Clinicians. For the past 30 years he has presented on the topic of ethical counseling at the local,

    state and national level.

    Brett Hoogeveen

    Brett Hoogeveen graduated from the University of Kansas in 2004. He is one of a seven member

    executive leadership team at Quality Living, Inc., a Brain injury and Spinal Cord Injury facility in Omaha,

    Nebraska. Mr. Hoogeveen serves as the primary contact for QLIs funding and referral sources, working

    to build trusting relationships and educate individuals regarding the scope and value of the services

    provided by Quality Living, Inc.

    Jack Greene, M.Ed, CRC, LPCJack Greene has been a vocational rehabilitation counselor for more than 30 years, both in the public

    sector and in private practice in Omaha, Nebraska. He provides vocational case management services,

    vocational expert testimony for litigation, and represents claimants applying for Social Security

    disability.

    Mike Newman, MS, CVE, LPC

    Mike Newman is currently in his 34th year as a vocational rehabilitation counselor and consultant. He

    has worked extensively in public and private sector rehabilitation as well as non-profit entities. Mr.

    Newman is a former facilities director for Nebraska State Vocational Rehabilitation, a former board

    member of the State Rehabilitation Council and was the Director of Long Term Disability Management

    for Mutual of Omaha from April 1997 through December of 2006. He has been in private practice either

    full or part-time since 1980.

    Mike Newman has been continuously certified through the Nebraska Workers' Compensation Court

    since January 1995. He is certified to provide vocational rehabilitation, and job placement services to

    injured workers in Nebraska. Mr. Newman is a licensed professional counselor and a Diplomate with the

    American Board of Vocational Experts. He is presently in private practice with Dr. David Stein of

    Vocational Consulting Group.

    Mr. Newman is experienced in working with Nebraska Workers' Compensation, Iowa Industrial

    Disability, Personal Injury, Long Term Disability, Divorce and Catastrophic Injury cases. His practice

    includes vocational evaluation, testing, long term disability, transferable skill analysis loss of earning

    power evaluations job placement assistance and vocational plan development. He has provided expert

    testimony since 1986 for personal injury, workers compensation and employment law cases. Mr.

    Newman is frequently retained by both plaintiff and defense attorneys. In the fall of 2008 his article

    entitled Proving Loss of Earning Power was published in the Prairie Barrister through the Nebraska

    Association of Trial Attorneys.
