Season PreviewWith a young but experienced nucleus, the 2013 Kansas City volleyball team is primed for a big season in their first year in the Western Athletic Con-ference. Head Coach Christi Posey enters her third season at the helm with five returning starters and the libero, including 2012 Summit League All-Fresh-man Team and Honorable Men-tion All-League honoree Emma Hagedorn.

“Our team enjoyed a produc-tive pre-season,” Posey said. “There was quality time spent on the court in skills and system work, but the most important development was learning more about each other and deter-mining our team dynamic. We credit our returning players with helping our newcomers quickly understand the expectations of our program and what it means to be a Roo!”

With a roster that features only one player with more than one year of experience in the Blue & Gold in senior Chloe Jarema, Posey knows the ‘Roos will have a lot of room to grow as a team this season.

On the sideline, third year coach Trent Jones was promoted to Associate Head Coach this off-season, while Graduate Assistant

Coach Kalani Rose and Student Assistant Coach Amanda Guess join the staff this season. As a group, the coaches know that the team will have to start the season strong in preseason competition and continue it throughout the WAC schedule.

“Our preseason schedule will certainly challenge our young squad,” Posey added. “We be-lieve it will help us prepare for the different styles of play that we expect to see in the WAC. “

Setting up the offense this sea-son will be sophomore Nicole Wemhoff and freshman Kaylyn Brandt.

Kansas City native Wemhoff returns for her second season as a Kangaroo after starting 27 matches a season ago and lead-ing the team with 732 assists.

Brandt, meanwhile, joins the ‘Roos out of Sumner, Iowa, where she was named Iowa 2A Second Team All-State as a senior after setting the school record with 730 assists.

“Our setters are hardworking and determined,” Posey said. “The two of them complement each other extremely well. Even

though they are young our team is in good hands with the duo.”

In the back row, the ‘Roos return the sophomore pair of Taryn Miller and Lindsay Zych, while freshman JoAnna Muenks will provide depth to the squad.

Miller, who will spend a major-ity of the time at libero for the 2013 ‘Roos, finished last season with a team-high 540 digs, the fourth most in school history, while her 34 aces were tops in The Summit League.

Like Miller, Zych appeared in all 30 matches a season ago, finish-ing second on the team with 245 digs, including a season-high of 18 twice.

Muenks, meanwhile, joins the ‘Roos out of Westphalia, Mo., where she helped Fatima High School to the Missouri 2A State Championship in 2012 and a runner-up finish in 2011.

“Our defensive specialists are skilled, vocal and above all fear-less,” Posey said. “They provide more energy for us than any other spot on the court.”

Season Preview

At the net, the ‘Roos will feature a trio in the middle that includes sophomore returnees Emma Hagedorn and Skyler Muff, as well as Missouri transfer Melissa Hartsel.

In 2012, Hagedorn finished with 235 kills and a team-high 94 blocks, leading to a spot on The Summit League All-Freshman Team and Honorable Mention All-Summit League honors.

Muff, who also returns for her second season in the Blue & Gold, finished last season with 226 kills and 77 blocks, while earning a spot on both the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic and Runnin’ Bulldog Classic All-Tour-nament Teams.

Hartsel, meanwhile, joins the ‘Roos out of instate rival Mis-souri where she appeared in 17 matches for the Tigers with eight starts in 2012.

“Our middles are strong and physical players,” Posey said. “They are an athletic and versa-tile group that represents our most experienced position.”

On the outside, the ‘Roos fea-

ture a veteran group of hitters who will provide a bulk of this season’s offensive output.

Senior Chloe Jarema, the ‘Roos lone fourth year player, finished 2012 with 75 kills, 35 digs and 35 blocks, while fellow up-perclassmen Morgan Voorhes enters her second year at Kan-sas City after appearing in 23 matches with 28 kills, including a career-high 11 against Delaware State.

In the sophomore class, Jes-sica Hendin enters her second campaign in the Blue & Gold after notching 225 kills and 235 digs, while being named to the Runnin’ Bulldog Classic All-Tour-nament Team. Fellow sophomore Sydney Crimmins will hold down the right side for the ‘Roos in 2013 after finishing 2012 with 135 kills, 70 blocks and 52 digs.

Joining the Kangaroos in 2013 will be freshman Taylor Buhrow, who was named to the Iowa 2A First Team All-State after setting school single season records in kills, hitting percentage, kills per set and aces.

Fellow freshman Meagan Kerns, meanwhile, will miss the 2013 season after a knee injury in the offseason. During her prep

career, the Anthon, Iowa, native was honored as an Iowa 2A First Team All-State selection after recording a school record 1,423 kills in her career.

“We have a great variety of talented and skilled offensive weapons,” Posey said. “There is a quality mix of strength, finesse and shot making ability from this group.”

The ‘Roos, who will be entering their first season in the Western Athletic Conference, open the season with three preseason tournaments, including hosting the Kangaroo Klassic on Sep. 13-14.

“Our players are excited to travel and compete in the West-ern Athletic Conference this year,” Posey said. “Any change provides opportunity for growth in a program. Despite not know-ing a lot about our new confer-ence opponents, we look for-ward to the challenge of making our mark.”

The conference slate will be a 16-match, home-and-home, round robin format between the nine members of the WAC, including first-year members Chicago State, CSU Bakersfield,

Season PreviewGrand Canyon, Texas – Pan American and Utah Valley, as well as holdovers New Mexico State, Idaho and Seattle. Grand Canyon will be ineligible for the postseason until 2017 during their NCAA Division I transi-tion period.

Kansas City will open the 2013 season at the Arkansas Invita-tional in Fayetteville, Ark., on Aug. 30-31 with matches against host Arkansas, New Mexico and Northwestern State, before heading to College Park, Md., for the Maryland Invitational #1 on Sep. 6-7 where they will square-off with host Maryland, Penn and LIU-Brooklyn.

The following week, the ‘Roos will welcome in Wake Forest, Eastern Illinois and Presbyterian to Kansas City for the Kangaroo Klassic, a round robin tourna-ment at the Swinney Recreation Center.

The Kangaroos remaining non-conference schedule, meanwhile, is highlighted by the home opener with Big 12 foe Kansas on Sep. 3, where Posey spent 12 seasons as an assistant, while the ‘Roos will also make trips to SIU – Edwardsville on Sep. 17 and Southeast Missouri State on Sep. 18.

“Beginning our third season at UMKC, we thought it was important to seek a more com-petitive non-conference sched-ule,” Posey added. “Traveling to Arkansas and Maryland for tournaments and hosting Kansas in early September will definitely bump up our competition level.”

The 2013 WAC Volleyball Tour-nament, hosted by Grand Can-yon, will be held Nov. 25-27, at GCU Arena in Phoenix, Ariz., and will include the top six eli-gible teams in the regular-season standings

Kansas City volleyball sopho-more middle hitter Emma Hagedorn was named to the Preseason All-WAC Team, while the ‘Roos were picked to finish sixth in the nine team confer-ence.

Last season, the Parkville, Mo., native was named to The Sum-mit League All-Freshman Team, while also earning a spot on the Honorable Mention All-League squad. On Oct. 22, meanwhile, Hagedorn was named The Sum-mit League Defensive Player of the Week. On the year, she started 27 matches, registering 235 kills with a .142 hitting per-centage, 29 digs and a team-high

94 blocks.

Idaho junior middle blocker Alyssa Schultz was the pick for WAC Preseason Player of the Year. The Vandals placed the most players on the preseason All-WAC team with three, while Bakersfield, New Mexico State and Utah Valley had two apiece. Joining Shultz on the preseason team are teammates Katelyn Peterson and Taylor Wilkinson, Bakersfield’s Debora Araujo and Fernanda Gonçalves, New Mexico State’s Lauren Loerch and Desiree Scott, Utah Val-ley’s Brookelyn Hall and Lauren Stringham, Mackenzie Phelps of Grand Canyon, and Martina Samadan of Seattle U.

New Mexico State received seven of the first-place votes with Idaho earning the other two. The Aggies earned 62 total points, followed by Idaho with 58. Utah Valley was picked to finish third with 44 points, followed by Seattle U in fourth with 39 points, just ahead of Bakersfield in fifth with 38 and Kansas City in sixth with 35 points. Texas-Pan American, Grand Canyon and Chicago State rounded out the poll with 21, 17 and 10 points, respec-tively.

UMKC Record: 29-30Summit League Record: 15-19

Christi Posey enters her third season at the helm of the UMKC volleyball program after being named the new head coach of the Kangaroos on Feb. 14, 2011.

Last season, Posey guided the ‘Roos to a 17-13 record overall, the second most wins in school history, while Emily Lucas was named to the First Team All-Summit League and Emma Hagedorn was named Honorable Mention All-Summit League and to the Summit League All-Freshman Team. Skyler Muff, meanwhile, was named to a pair of preseason all-tournament teams, while Lucas and Taryn Miller were each named to one.

Academically, three Kangaroos were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, while seven were named to The Summit League Fall Academic Honor Roll, including four as Distinguished Scholars.

In her first season as the ‘Roos head coach, Posey guided the squad to a 12-17 record overall and a 6-12 mark in Summit League play, including five wins in their final seven matches. During the year, the first year coach saw five seperate players named to all-tournament teams, while leading UMKC to a 3-0 record in the Radford Tournament, its first preseason title since 2002. Under her watch, meanwhile, seniors Christiana McQuin (blocks and block assists) and Nicole Kerkman (digs) each set new school records.

Academically, eight ‘Roos were named to The Summit League Fall Academic All-League Team, including three as Distinguished Scholars, while the team claimed its third NCAA Public Recognition Award from the NCAA in the last four years after finishing in the top-10 percent in APR of all NCAA Division I volleyball teams for the 2010-11 season.

Prior to joing the UMKC program, Posey has spent eleven seasons as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at the University of Kansas, where she landed the No. 26 ranked class in the na- tion according to PrepVolleyball.com in 2010.

While at Kansas, Posey worked with the team’s setters and defensive specialist, while also serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator, overseeing the team’s managers, team room and camp administration, and acting as a liaison between the team and its sports psychologist, promotions department and the weight room

During her time on the sidelines, Posey oversaw the development of many impressive Jayhawks, including 2010 team members Melissa Manda and Nicole Tate. Under Posey’s guidance, Manda became the all-time digs leader at KU with 1,457 digs in her career, while Tate served as the team’s primary setter the past three season and was named to the 2008 all-Big 12 Freshman squad.

From 2002-05, Posey worked with Andi Rozum who became Kansas’ all-time leader in assists, as well as Jennifer Kraft, who was named 2002 Big 12 Defensive Specialist of the Year.

Prior to heading to Lawrence, Posey served as the head volleyball coach at Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kan., from 1993 to 2000. Associate Head Coach • Graceland • 2002 • Third YearTrent jones

The Kansas City Volleyball program announced that Trent Jones has been promoted to Associate Head Coach after serving the past two years as the assistant coach. Last season the ‘Roos posted a 17-13 record, the second most wins in school history, and advanced to the conference tournament for the first time since 2009.

“Trent has been instrumental in the success we’ve experienced thus far and there is no question to the positive impact he will have in the future in our program.” Head Coach Christi Posey said, “His loyalty, his work ethic, and his commitment to player improvement make him an outstanding asset to Kansas City Volleyball.”

Jones came to UMKC from UMSL, where he led the Tritons to a 64-28 record in his three seasons and the squad’s first trip to the NCAA Division II tournament since 1995 in 2010. In that season, he directed the squad to its first appearance in the AVCA top-25 since 1993, while being named the Great Lakes Valley Coach of the Year in 2008. In his three seasons, Jones produced 12 All-GLVC selections, four All-Region selections and an All-Region Freshman of the Year honoree.

Although Jones oversees many aspects of the program, his work with the middle attackers produced an All-League performance from freshman, Emma Hagedorn. Jones also coordi- nates blocking schemes and team defense.

“We are thrilled to be able to promote Trent to Associate Head Coach; it gives us the chance to demonstrate our appreciation for his expertise and dedication.” Posey said.

Prior to heading the UMSL program, Jones served as First Assistant at Washburn University from 2004-2008, helping the Lady Blues to a 129-23 record during his time on the bench. In 2007, Washburn made its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Final Four after achiev-ing a school-record 35-3 record in 2005. Under his guidance, the Lady Blues placed seven players on the all-American team.

From 2002-04, Jones served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Kansas where he helped guide the squad to its best season in school history and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003.

As a collegiate student-athlete, Jones was a member of the Columbia College men’s team, where he led the Cougars to the 2000 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Championship. The new UMKC Assistant Coach also spent 1998-1999 and 2000-02 as a member of Graceland Uni-versity volleyball team where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History with an emphasis on Civil Rights in 2002.

CATALINA SUAREZ -- NO. 8, NUMBER RETIRED OCT. 31, 1996UMKC produced one of the greatest collegiate volleyball players of all time when Catalina Suarez donned a Kan ga roos’ uniform from 1988—89. And on Oct. 31, 1996, UMKC retired the No. 8 in her honor. She joins former basketball player Ronnie Schmitz as the only two UMKC student-athletes to have their uniform number retired. Suarez transferred to UMKC following the 1986 season after a two-year stint with the Uni ver si ty of Kansas. After sitting out the 1987 season, she finished her career at UMKC from 1988—89. In 1989, she was named first-team all-Mideast and was an honorable mention all-American. She received UMKC’s David B. Milner Award in both 1988-89 and 1989-90, which is presented to the department’s most

inspirational athlete. She was also a member of the Colombian national team for four years and served as the captain for three years. The decision to retire Suarez’ number was made by the UMKC Special Recognition Committee, which was composed of selected members of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee. In 2008, Suarez was selected to the inaugural UMKC Athletics Hall of Fame, where she was officially inducted on Dec. 5. Suarez still ranks at or near the top of several Division I national record charts.
