Aloha, and E Komo Mai (Welcome) to our beautiful islands, our home, our proud
state and one of the most diverse and important locations in the United States. It is
our sincere honor to host the 135th General Conference & Exhibition in Honolulu.
This has been a particularly challenging year to execute a conference of this
magnitude here in Hawaii. Economic challenges, close scrutiny on conferences,
particularly in tourist locations, and a continuing high operations tempo have
made planning for this event difficult. But the many obstacles make it imperative
to assemble and address our challenges and our future. I thank you for making
the effort to be part of this important conference.
While the headlines continue to focus on the Middle East, our focus here in U.S.
Pacific Command is on Asia and the Pacific, where events have an increasing
impact on the global economic and strategic landscape. We hope to expose you to
the issues in this theater that you may not realize impact your world.
Please also take the time to stop and decompress. Slow down just a couple knots
and enjoy what Hawaii has to offer: history at Pearl Harbor or our museums, the
dynamic cultures of the Pacific island nations, international cuisine and some of
the worlds best beaches. Our goal is to conduct serious business, and also to get
you to slow down and relaxHawaiian style.
Some of the notable changes to this years conference include the Governors
Reception on Friday evening, the TAGs reception on Saturday evening and the
States Dinner on Monday evening, all requiring Aloha attire. Please check the
guidance on conference dress on page 32 so we dont have any wardrobe
malfunctions!
Our special events have been designed with you in mind. We hope you will enjoy
them. Although we encourage you to maximize your down time here, please dont
overdo it. Be careful when you venture out in the hills and ocean. And be sure to
use sunscreen (even if its cloudy).
We are very proud of our state, and we are happy to have the chance to share
our home with you. If there is anything we can do to help make your stay more
enjoyable, please let the members of our conference staff know. They are easily
identified by their light-blue polo shirts.
Maj. Gen. Darryll D.M. Wong
Adjutant General of Hawaii
