First, decide which big gamespecies you intend to hunt: Elk,deer, bear, pronghorn and/ormoose. This will help you focus onwhich area to pick and when tohunt because season dates differfor each. Then decide when to huntusing the Colorado Big Game Hunt-ing Planner and the method oftake to use: archery, muzzleloaderor rifle.

Select your hunt location.Hunt locations are refered to asgame management units (GMU's).GMU's divide up the entire state. Some GMU’s have special regula-tions that are explained in the BigGame brochure. Public lands areabundant in Colorado and include, the United States Forest Service(USFS), Bureau of Land Manage-ment (BLM), Colorado State TrustLands and State Wildlife Areas(SWA). Terrain and access vary, soyou’ll need to check with the localCPW, public lands office or theS-portsman Information Specialist atthe Moffat County Visitor Centerfor details.Examine past success rates forelk and other big game species.. View historic big game migra-tion movements on the ColoradoHunting Atlas, available online athttp://ndis.nrel.colostate.edu/huntingatlas/Research the preference

points needed to apply for limitedlicenses. Colorado is the only statethat offers an unlimited quantity ofover-the-counter (OTC) elk li-censes for two rifle seasons. Theselicenses cover about 50 percent ofthe Colorado GMU's and don't limityour hunt to one unit. They are a

great "general" license option anddon't require preference points. They can be purchased until thenight before the season starts. In Colorado, an over-the-counter bull tag allows you to huntanywhere in 92 units. Season datesinclude two weekends. Leftover licenses go on sale at 9

a.m. Aug. 6 for anyone looking topurchase a leftover in person or byphone. Leftovers go on sale onlineat midnight on August 7. GMU's are very important forhunting in Colorado. They are theareas you choose to hunt. The GMUmap can be found in the back ofthe big game brochure or on page6 of this publication.
