America’s KRInGle CaPITal

The Danes, who settled in the Racine area starting in the mid-19th century, brought this delicious treat with them as they pursued wagon-making, sailing and other jobs . The pastry’s name is taken from certain knots and cleats in Scandinavian sailing lingo . Kringle was originally pretzel-shaped, but local bakers later adopted an easy-to-serve oval shape that contains more filling .

An authentic Danish kringle is 32 layers of flaky, buttery dough filled with a variety of fruits and nuts and baked until golden brown . Pecan and almond are the most popular flavors, but other varieties include blueberry, cherry, apple, strawberry and cream cheese . Among seasonal selections are turtle, cranberry, cinnamon and key lime .

Kringle making is a time- and labor-intensive process . Bakers repeatedly fold

together butter and flour and then refrigerate the dough to produce a delicate, flaky texture . It takes about three days to make a kringle from start to finish .

The effort is well worth it! Kringle from Racine has gained an enthusiastic worldwide following . You may have seen it featured on TV, including the Food Network, the Travel Channel and the “Today Show .” Even President Barack Obama took home three kringles — pecan, cherry and cheese — during a June 2010 visit .

You’ll easily find kringle at local bakeries, grocery stores and other outlets throughout the area . Our bakers proudly ship their kringle all over the world — particularly during the Christmas holiday season .

Go ahead, enjoy a taste from America’s Kringle Capital!

Give credit to Danish immigrants for making Racine County America’s Kringle Capital .

Kringle baker Eric Olesen.

The Racine area’s four traditional Danish bakeries have kringle at their retail counters . You’ll also find the popular pastry at many area grocery stores and other outlets . Or, if you prefer, you can order kringle through each bakery’s website .

Racine and FRanK lloYD WRIGHT

A Wisconsin native, Wright (1867-1959), left a significant legacy in Racine County, thanks to a long association with the SC Johnson family . Several Wright-designed and Wright-inspired local buildings are open to the public .

sC JoHnson CamPus

The SC Johnson campus, 1525 Howe St ., Racine, is anchored by the Wright-designed SC Johnson Administration Building and the Research and Development Tower.

The Administration Building, completed in 1939, was described by Life magazine as the greatest innovation in business building since the advent of the skyscraper . It features 43 miles of translucent tubing that allows natural light to illuminate the interior . A series of unique, concrete dendriform columns support the ceiling of the Great Workroom, the building’s largest open space .

At 153 feet, the Research and Development Tower is one of the tallest buildings ever constructed on the cantilever principle . Its central core extends into the ground creating what Wright called a “tap-root” foundation . The tower, completed in 1951, is currently not open .

The Administration Building and Research and Development Tower were designated National Historic Landmarks in 1976 .

Visionary, egotistical, inspiring, genius . The legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright was all this and more .

a replica of a Sikorsky S-38 amphibious aircraft . This plane was used by Sam Johnson and his sons to recreate H .F . Johnson Jr .’s 1935 expedition to Fortaleza, Brazil, to study the carnauba palm, a key ingredient in floor and furniture care products .

Inside Fortaleza Hall is The SC Johnson Gallery: At Home With Frank Lloyd Wright . This exhibit features rarely seen artifacts that explore Wright’s influence on families and the home . Coming in the spring of 2013 is “Usonian: Rethinking the American Home .”

Fortaleza Hall also includes an unusual vertical garden and the Legacy Gallery, an historical display about the SC Johnson company .

Tours are available Friday only from Jan . 1 to April 30 and Wednesday through Saturday from May 1 to Sept . 30 . Tours are free, but reservations are required . Call 262-260-2154 or email rondelle@scj .com .

WInGsPReaD

The Wright-designed Wingspread at 33 E . Four Mile Road in the Village of Wind Point was the family home of H .F . Johnson Jr . The last and largest of the Prairie-style homes designed by Wright, Wingspread has four wings that feed into a central area called the “Wigwam” or “Great Hall .”

The property is now operated by the Johnson Foundation at Wingspread as a conference facility . It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989 .

Free tours of Wingspread are available by appointment only, Tuesday through Friday, unless a conference is in session . Call 262-681-3353 or email tour@johnsonfdn .org .

Also on the Johnson campus is the Golden Rondelle Theatre, which was constructed for the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair . Redesigned by the Taliesin Associated Architects, a group founded by Wright, the structure was moved to Racine where it serves as a site for films and public gatherings .

Nearby Fortaleza Hall, built as a tribute to the late SC Johnson Chairman Samuel C . “Sam” Johnson, opened in 2010 . The striking glass and steel structure, designed by Foster + Partners of London, houses

Inside Fortaleza Hall is The SC Johnson Gallery: At Home With Frank Lloyd Wright.

SC Johnson Administration Building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and opened its doors in 1939.

“beach mom”Scan the code with your mobile device to view “Beach Mom,” a video about Dr. Julie Kinzelman, Racine Health Department research scientist, who was instrumental in the North Beach cleanup.

THe GReaT ameRICan beaCHBlue water, clean sand and palm trees waving in the breeze . Hawaii? Florida? Nope, it’s Racine .North Beach, 50 acres of beautifully groomed sand and clear water, is located just north of Downtown Racine along Lake Michigan . The area includes the Beachfront Oasis, a weekend live music venue; a wheelchair-accessible pathway to the shore and Kids Cove, a delightful playground constructed by community volunteers .

This piece of paradise hasn’t remained a secret . Last year, USA Today named North

Beach to its list of “51 Great American Beaches .” The beach was also named a “Top 10 Family Friendly Beach” by Parents magazine in 2011 and one of the “Top City Beaches” by Midwest Living magazine in 2010 .

It wasn’t always that way .A decade ago, North Beach was frequently

empty even on the warmest summer days . Water pollution prompted frequent beach closings and concerns about crime kept visitors away . The low point was in 2000 when the beach was closed for 62 days because of unsafe water quality .

Fortunately, the community took action . A citizen group called Keep Our Beaches Open (KOBO) formed to raise public awareness . The City of Racine Health Department, the Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, Sustainable Racine and SC Johnson all got involved in improving the beach .

The water quality at North Beach quickly improved after storm water runoff retention ponds were constructed and changes were made in how the beach was groomed . Meanwhile, KOBO launched an aggressive public information campaign to help prevent harmful materials from being dumped into storm sewers that drained into the lake . The hard work paid off in 2004 when North Beach became the first in Wisconsin to earn the Blue Wave Beach designation from the

National Clean Beaches Council .Improvements continue at the city-owned

beach to sustain good water quality . In 2012, North Beach became one of the first Great Lakes beaches to implement a process to test for waterborne bacteria that provides results in just a few hours . Water quality-related beach closings are now practically non-existent .

Drawn by the sun, sand and fun, visitors have responded in a big way . The city of Racine estimates that about 200,000 people enjoy North Beach every year .

Major annual events at North Beach include the Spike ‘n Splash Festival, a combination of EVP Beach Volleyball and watercraft races (June 14-16) and the Ironman 70 .3 Racine triathlon (July 21) .

Four Flags is among the 21 Quilts on Barns designs that can be seen throughout Racine County.

Whether your visit is a few hours or a few days, Racine County offers a refreshingly rural experience .

Just turn off the major highways and on to one of the many scenic back roads that wind through the countryside . You’ll find beauty and surprises at every turn .

A good starting point is “Quilts on Barns — the Beauty of Rural Art .” This public art project has placed 21 colorful quilt patterns on historic barns throughout the county . The brainchild of local quilt enthusiast Kathi Wilson, the project was sponsored by the nonprofit Racine Arts Council in conjunction with Real Racine .

Motorists and cyclists can easily spot

distinctive designs such as Bear’s Paw, Wild Goose Chase, Corn and Beans, Tulip Basket and Black-Eyed Susan adorning select barns . The casual route is particularly attractive in the fall and spring .

The Quilts on Barns locations are indicated by barn-shaped symbols on the Racine County map on pages 24-25 . A map display can also be seen at the Real Racine Visitor Center, 14015 Washington Ave . (I-94 Exit 333) where travel counselors are happy to give directions . Or, visit the Quilts on Barns website: www .quiltsonbarns .com .

Racine County’s country flavor starts along the Lake Michigan shoreline in the villages of Caledonia and Mount Pleasant . The county’s eastern portion, which also includes the villages of Wind Point and Sturtevant, is favored by residents who want easy access to transportation corridors but like having extra elbow room .

Continuing west across the county, the rolling farmland produces a variety of crops, including cabbage, pumpkins, strawberries, corn, wheat and soybeans . Visitors will find an abundance of farm-

fresh produce at roadside stands . Among the rural area’s popular attractions are Apple Holler, Borzynski’s Farm and Floral Market, Swan’s Pumpkin Farm, Bear Den Zoo & Petting Farm, Hoppe Homestead and Green Meadows Farm .

Located in the picturesque Fox River Valley is the village of Waterford . The village’s pretty waterfront park hosts the River Rhythms summer concert series and Fall Fest each autumn . Its population explodes to more 15,000 each July for the Waterford Hot Air Balloon Festival (July 19-21 this year) . The popular event includes evening balloon ascensions, a craft and vendor fair, a car show, pancake breakfast and more .

Just downstream from Waterford is the historic village of Rochester with several quaint shops in a compact setting .

The centrally located village of Union Grove is home to the Racine County Fair, one of Wisconsin’s oldest and most popular fairs . Held July 24-28 this year, the fair’s family fun includes tractor pulls, live music, agriculture exhibits, farm animals and midway rides . The fairground also hosts Fall Harvest Days, planned for Sept . 13-15, where visitors can step back in time with vintage farm equipment and demonstrations of old-time methods of threshing and hay baling .

Slow down, roll down the windows and enjoy rural Racine County — your place in the country!
