Foundation & OrganizationFounded in 1916 as a Department of Sacramento High School, Sacramento City College is the seventh oldest pub-

lic community college in California and the oldest institution of higher learning in Sacramento. In 1922, the citizens of Sacramento organized a junior college district by severing the connections between the

college and Sacramento High School. This plan of organization remained in force until 1936 when the college became a part of the Sacramento City Unified School District.

Twenty-eight years later, as a result of a March 17, 1964 election, Sacramento City College separated from the Sacramento City Unified School District to join the newly organized Los Rios Junior College District which assumed the operation of American River College and Sacramento City College. In 1970 the newly renamed Los Rios Commu-nity College District opened a third campus, Cosumnes River College. Folsom Lake College became the fourth fully accredited college in the District in 2003.

Sacramento City College Panthers

1951 State ChampionsThe Panthers of 1951 won the first baseball state championship in Sacramento Junior College history with a season record of 29-3. The team, which was coached by Jack Woerner, had a 19-game winning streak that included a 14-1 defeat of the University of California. Pete Vartanian was the team MVP, while catcher John McNamara was the team captain. McNamara became a major league manager for 16 years; his career highlighted with a World Series appearance in 1986 as manager of the Boston Red Sox. Pitcher Tony Stathos had a 12-0 record and won the title-clinching game by a score of 7-5 over El Camino Junior College.

1953 State Champions Jack Woerner led the Panthers to their second championship in 3 years as the team posted a 25-5 record. J.C. Masters pitched the Panthers to a playoff victory for the league title to advance to the state playoffs. Grant Tech (now American River) fell to the Panthers 15-0 and 5-2 as Sacramento Junior College captured the Nor Cal championship, as Masters pitched a 2-hitter and hit a home run in the opener and the team stole 13 bases. After losing the opener of the state championship, the Panthers came from behind twice to defeat Long Beach City College in a doubleheader to win the final series. Center fielder Norman Coons led the team in RBI, runs scored, hits, home runs, triples, and stolen bases in being named the team MVP. Masters was 11-1 with 79 strikeouts in 78 innings.

1988 State ChampionsWeinstein’s Panthers captured the third state championship in school history after going through the loser’s bracket at the state tournament and defeating top-ranked Rancho Santiago twice to win the title. The Panthers finished 46-10 and were led by Camino Norte Conference Player of the Year F.P. Santangelo, who led the state with 45 stolen bases. On April 28, 1988, the Panthers won the first game played in partially completed Union Stadium, clinching their eighth straight Camino Norte Conference championship. Weinstein was named National Community College Coach of the Year.

1998 State ChampionsThe 1998 Panther baseball team posted a dominating record of 44-2 in winning the second state championship under Jerry Weinstein and the fourth in school history. The team lost the second game of the season and didn’t lose again until the second game of the playoffs - a streak of 37 straight wins, including a 26-0 record in the Bay Valley Conference. They swept through the rest of the playoffs, defeating Saddleback in the final game. Pitcher Mike Neu posted a record of 15-0, the most wins in school history without a defeat. Matt Riley, a freshman who posted an 8-1 record, signed after the season with the Baltimore Orioles for a junior college record signing bonus of $790,000.

1999 State ChampionsThe 1999 baseball team became the first Panther team since the 1982 football team to repeat as state champions. First year coach Andy McKay guided the Panthers after Coach Weinstein resigned his coaching position to take a job with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. After sweeping through the playoffs, the team found itself needing to win the final 2 games on the final day to win the championship. The Panthers won the first and then found themselves trailing in the bottom of the ninth inning of the final. After telling McKay that he was going to win a championship, shortstop Joe Thurston delivered a 2 run double with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Panthers were able to dog pile for the second straight year.

Assistant Coach John Herlihy is entering his 15th season as a Panther assistant coach. John will be responsible for the development of the catchers this season. John was a member of the 1995 Final Four team, a year in which he was named to the All-Conference team as a designated hitter. Herlihy then transferred to the University of Pittsburgh to continue playing baseball. Prior to his Sac City baseball career, John spent two seasons as the fullback for the Sacramento City College football team. John earned All-Conference, All-State, and All-American honors as a member of the Panther football team. He eventually returned to California to complete his degree at UC Davis and received his credential from National University. John and his wife Nichole live in Elk Grove with their son and daughter.

Derek is in his 9th year as a member of the Panther coaching staff and will serve as the interim head coach for the 2013 season. In addition to his coaching duties, he also teaches in the Kinesiology, Health and Athletics Division.

In the summer of 2013, "Sully" will be the field manager for the newly-formed Sacramento Cats 17U Baseball Club, partnering with Panther assistant coaches Drew Henning and Paul Carmazzi to run the development-based, travel ball program.

Over the 2011 and 2012 summers, Derek was a part of the Chatham A’s coaching staff in the Cape Cod League. He followed in the footsteps of Sac

City coaches Andy McKay and Deskaheh Bomberry, who both coached in Chatham for longtime skipper, John Schiffner. The Cape serves as college baseball’s premier summer league, attracting the best amateur players in the country.

Derek began his coaching career in the summer of 2004 with the Bayside (NY) Yankees. His on-field duties included running the offense and coaching third base for one of the premier Connie Mack programs on the east coast, including coaching Pirates' #1 overall pick Pedro Alvarez. In the summer of 2005 he coached with the Lafayette (CA) Generals and assumed the same on-field duties for one of Northern California’s best summer baseball programs.

He returned to coach for the Panthers after playing for Sac City in 2001 and 2002 (reaching the Final Four both years) and transferring to St. John’s University in Queens, NY for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, where he played for Ed Blankmeyer. As a member of the Red Storm, Derek was a utility infielder and played in the 2004 NCAA Stanford Regional.

A graduate of Woodcreek High School, Sacramento City College (AA), St. John’s University (BS), and Sacramento State University (MBA), he now lives in Natomas with his wife, Nicole, and daughter, Abigail.

Deskaheh Bomberry “Bomber” begins his 15th season as a Panther assistant coach. Before joining the SCC staff, Bomberry spent two seasons the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Kentucky University under Head Coach Jim Ward. Since coming to Sac City, 35 pitchers have transferred to Division I universities and 16 have signed professional contracts. In the summer of 2000, Deskaheh was an assistant coach for the Chatham A’s in the prestigious Cape Cod League. The

A’s lost in the first round of the playoffs, but seven players from the team went on to play Major League Baseball. Bomber began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Kennedy-Valley American Legion team. While with Kennedy-Valley, Deskaheh coached the pitchers and was the third base coach. In 1995, Bomber was the head coach for the Petaluma American Legion team. As a player, Bomber played two years at Cosumnes River College. While at CRC, Bomber was part of two conference championship teams. At the conclusion of his junior college career, he transferred to Sonoma State University and played two seasons. Deskaheh received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Sonoma State and a Master’s Degree from Eastern Kentucky University. This season, Bomber will be in charge of the pitching staff and will coordinate the Panthers’ recruiting efforts. Along with his coaching duties, Bomber also teaches full-time in the physical education/health department. Bomber and his wife Rosanne live in East Sacramento with their daughter, Ryan Jane

Pete is beginning his 13th season as a Panther assistant coach. Pete is one of several former Panthers who has returned to Sacramento City College as a coach. Pete played for the Panthers in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, Pete and his teammates finished second in the state. The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Pryor following the 1993 season. When he finished playing at SCC, he transferred to the University of Kentucky where he played for Keith Madison. After two successful seasons as a Wildcat, Pete was drafted

and signed by the Chicago White Sox. He spent two years in the organization as a minor leaguer. Following his stint in the minors, Pete returned to UK and earned a Master’s Degree while volunteering his coaching services to the baseball team. Pryor will work with the infielders (being a former 1st basemen) and help out with the hitters. Pete and his wife Kara have two children, Luke (6 years old) and Hazel (2).

Sports Information DirectorSteve Gill

Steve Gill is entering his 15th year with the SCC Athletic Department, and is currently the school’s Sports Information Director (SID), entering his 8th year in this role. His primary responsibilities include designing and maintaining all of the athletic web pages (and updating results to provide the most current information), and serving as the “Voice of the Panthers” as the P.A. Announcer for all home contests for football, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball. Steve’s passion for sports announcing began in his senior year at Christian Brothers High School, where he announced the men’s basketball games for fun and that carried over to his first year at Sac City (while red-shirting for baseball) when he announced all of the home baseball games for the Panthers. After his career ended at SCC, he decided to pursue his degree at

Sac State and give up playing baseball so that he could announce here at Sac City, and he has been doing it ever since. His voice eventually would carry over to the hardwood as he was recruited to do the basketball games and finally he has become the “Voice of the Panthers.” Gill was a member of the 1998 Sac City Panthers National Championship baseball team that went 44-2 and was undefeated (26-0) in the Bay Valley Conference. After receiving his A.A. Degree from SCC, he went on to earn a B.A. Degree in Communications from CSU, Sacramento (2000). In addition to his SID duties, Steve finds time to have a full-time job for Randstad at HP in Roseville, where he is currently a Site Operations Manager of a Call Center in Colorado Springs, a TSG Services Sales Team and a TS Customer Operations team. Steve still plays baseball (from February to October) in the Sacramento Men’s Senior Baseball League (SMSBL) and during the summer he manages the Sacramento Legends, a wood bat baseball team in the Sacramento Premier Baseball League. In just their 5th season, he led the Legends to the 2006 Stan Musial World Series at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. In October 2007 “Gilly” won a World Series Championship (his 2nd - the 1st coming with the Sacramento Braves in 2004) with the Sacramento Cardinals in Phoenix, AZ - earning co-MVP honors having tossed 3 consecutive complete games (the Quarterfinal, Semi-final and Championship games - 27 straight innings). He and his beautiful wife, Gretchen, live in Sacramento with their three children, Ian (11 yrs. old) and Alannah (4), and Nolan (1).

It was then we knew that by hook or by crook we could get the materials.

“The camaraderie that has grown around this project has been amazing, and the people involved have not been boisterous about their contributions.”

Although the project has been two years in planning and is nearing completion after six months of construction, Weinstein sounds as though even he can’t believe it.

With a joyful bounce in his stride as he tours the construction site, Weinstein gleefully points out the location of the twin locker rooms, equipment storage, the laundry facilities, umpires’ room and what will be the plexiglass-enclosed “VIP” room behind home plate.

Seating comes next, Weinstein said, noting the possibility that some local baseball history may be enshrined in the new park with the installation of light towers that once illuminated old Edmunds Field, the Broadway home of the revered Sacramento Solons.

Listed among the firms that have donated time and materials for the 1,500-seat grandstand are Barsteel, Vela Steel, Golden State Erectors, Camblin Steel Service, Gayle Manufacturing, and Sacramento

builder Greg Lukenbill contributed much of the structural steel and reinforcing iron.

The acknowledged driver behind the project is Mickey Mynsted, the easygoing business agent for the Iron Workers Union Local 118, who rallied the unions and others to the cause.

Brought on the scene at the behest of “a friend from one of the (American) Legion teams,” who asked him to help raise money, Mynsted said, “None of us realized this was going to grow

as big as it has.”The unions have used it to advantage as an

apprentice training program, and Mynsted said, “hundreds” of journeymen from the 12 unions involved have volunteered their services.

“Most of the work has been done on Saturday, but a lot of the guys are down here working every day in their spare time or between jobs,” he said.

Union Stadium“BALLPARK RISES ON LEAVEN OF FREE LABOR, MATERIALS”By Max MillerSacramento Bee Staff Writer

While Major League Baseball may be somewhere in the city’s future, a drive by Sacramento’s construction industry, headed by 12 building-craft unions, is humming in concert toward completion of a $2 million community baseball stadium at Sacramento City College.

On the construction site, one could stand in the shade provided by the imposing physique of big Bill Meehan, as he recounts how the craft unions, from bricklayers and ironworkers to electricians and plumbers, have put out free-of-charge sweat, muscle and know-how to build the “miniature, big league” ballpark on the SCC campus.

Between well-aimed streams of tobacco juice, Meehan, the head of the Sacramento Building Trades Council, recounted recently how the unions “just want everybody to know that we’re not the bleep-bleeps a lot of people think we are.”

“It’s mind-boggling, what’s been done,” he said. There’s nobody in town that hasn’t contributed in some small way.

“We (the trade unions) came on board as soon as we were satisfied that this was going to be a community stadium that wouldn’t be used for professional baseball.”

It’s description as “miniature major league” comes from Jerry Weinstein, the SCC Panther’s winningest baseball coach, who forecasts that the new, 1,500-seat facility on the campus at Freeport Boulevard and 12th Avenue will be the envy of every college - and some small cities across the country.

And Weinstein credits the backing of the Building Trades Council and the generosity of Sacramento building contractors and suppliers for the realization of his dream of a baseball stadium at SCC.

“Originally we figured that a $200-a-seat donation would have raised $300,000,” Weinstein said as he watched his vision transformed into what is estimated now to be nearly $2 million worth of skilled labor, concrete and steel.

“The key element was the labor unions who said, ‘We’ll come in and build it for you,’” the coach said.
