A MESSAGE FROM OUR FESTIVAL ORGANISERYet another year has passed and CAMRA Kernow returns once more to the St. Ives Concert Hall to present our annual beer festival. This will be the fourteenth festival to be held at the venue, which happily continues to grow in popularity. Once more for your delectation we offer a selection of in excess of 60 beers to sample. With most styles and tastes represented, there should be something to suit everyone’s palate.

Due to the continuing buoyancy of brewing within the County, our beer range emphasises local breweries, both large and small. Besides the local brews there are also a number of beers from Out of County. As well as beer we have a range of Ciders, both apple and pear, and Perries, which includes local products and are the “real deal”. If that’s not enough we also offer fruit wines, bottled beers and bottled fruit beers. Plus the ever popular “Grandma’s Weapon Grade” alcoholic ginger beer.

It is CAMRA policy that you be served a full measure for your money. To this end our souvenir glasses are deliberately oversized. They are clearly lined at the half and full pint marks and festival staff will ensure that your selected tipple comes to the line you have paid for. Your souvenir glass is yours to keep and treasure, but remember it is also your ticket for re-entry through the festival period. So keep your glass safe!! With a different logo design each year, the glasses have become collectables for so many, so why not buy an extra glass for a relative or friend who may have unfortunately missed the event. There is also the option of upgrading to purchase a commemorative festival tankard.

Remember the town of St Ives is an Alcohol Free Zone, so please ensure glasses are empty and stored before you leave the venue. To this end we supply free plastic bags to carry your glass in, so do ensure you obtain one or two on departure.

To assist dedicated tipplers to prolong their stay, we provide a menu of good value “solids”. The tasty repast is prepared by the hard working catering staff of the CAMRA Café , located below the stage. Always remember to eat as the day wears on.

Whatever you do, don’t drink and drive, public transport is always the best option, which is very good in the St Ives area. To assist your journey, transport timetables are displayed in the entrance foyer. If you are unfortunate to be a designated driver we offer unlimited free soft drinks, which are available from the bottled beer bar. To access just collect a “designated driver” token from the entrance desk and return the token on departure.

As usual, we support a deserving local Charity, this year it is the National Coastwatch Institute (St. Ives) who do such an essential job in keeping people safe within the local coastal waters. They are all volunteers and receive no public funding, so please support them with whatever you can afford, every penny counts.

So welcome, once again to the St Ives beer fest and do enjoy your time with us, which we hope will be such an exceptional experience you will return again next year.

Cheers

Gerry Wills

Over the next pages you’ll find details of all the ales, ciders, perries and more available at our bars. Here’re a few notes to help you enjoy the fest…

WRISTBANDSTo aid security and to ensure only legitimate customers enjoy the festival it has become necessary to introduce wrist-banding. The wristband indicates to staff that entrance charges have been paid. The production of a festival glass has proved insufficient, due to glasses being stolen. The colour of the wrist band will change at least daily. However this does not affect customers ‘re-entry by production of festival glass. We believe this measure is to the benefit of all our customers and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

CUSTOMER COURTESYAt times during the festival the bar area will become congested, please assist your fellow customers by moving away from the bars when you have purchased your drinks. This will allow other customers access to the bars to purchase theirs.

FESTIVAL GLASSESThe security of festival glasses is the responsibility of the customer. Without your glass you won’t get served, so safeguard it. Unfortunately, if a glass is lost through accidental breakage, a replacement will have to be purchased. Remember your festival glass is your ticket for re-entry throughout the period of the festival. If you intend to return, you have the choice of taking the glass with you or leaving it secure with the entrance staff for a nominal fee of 20p.

On leaving the festival please ensure the glass is transported safely in a bag. Staff will provide plastic bags for this purpose. If you don’t want to retain the glass a refund of £1.00 is available from the entrance desk. Acts of deliberate breakage will be treated as vandalism and will be dealt with accordingly.

PRICING POLICYTo comply with CAMRA internal policy of differential pricing the Branch has to vary the price of some beers, but to aid you the customer, this will be kept to the absolute minimum. The majority of beers available will be purchased with the standard price token. However, selected beers at lower end of the strength range will vary. Those at the lower end will cost 10p a pint less. Those costing less will have a green sticker on the cask label and be highlighted in green in the programme. Therefore customers on are entitled to a reimbursement of 5p on a half ad 10p on a pint.

Sorry for any inconvenience this system causes you, but the Branch has to comply with current CAMRA internal policy or their will not be a beer festival. The Branch is currently campaigning for a change in policy that makes more sense to both staff and customers

Thank you for your co-operation and please enjoy the festival.

The Campaign for Real Ale is a not-for-profit, volunteer led organisation that campaigns for real ale, real pubs and the rights of the consumer. As an organisation, we receive no government funding and rely on the revenue we receive from our members’ subscriptions, CAMRA beer festivals and sales of CAMRA books and merchandise, and your generosity.

How can I support CAMRA?For CAMRA to remain as the champion of real ale and pubs, and continue to fight against the record level of pub closures, please consider joining at our festival. Your support will help CAMRA raise awareness about the different challenges that are facing British pubs, and will help us to support the British pub industry as well as our local communities.

CAMRA campaigns nationally, regionally and locally to achieve our aims.Through numerous books, guides, awards and presentations, we reward good practice and encourage high standards, whether in brewing, pub cellarmanship, pub design or simply running a good pub. The Great British Beer Festival, the Good Beer Guide, the Champion Beer of Britain Awards and the Pub of the Year are all national in our scope, but our 180 local branches run local festivals (such as the one you’re at now) and awards, and produce their own local guides.

CAMRA campaigns against all brewery take-overs because they lead to brewery closures, loss of established beers, higher prices and reduced choice. We also campaign when good pubs are threatened with closure because of the impact this will have on the local community. Lively campaigns are mounted at local level, with backup from our national headquarters and MPs, councillors, trade unions, licensees and workers often also become involved.

As well as Kernow branch’s own, local magazine ‘One & Ale’ CAMRA also produces a hard-hitting newspaper, “What’s Brewing”, which goes out free to members, the brewery trade and the media. It plays a major role in informing beer drinkers and putting across our views. CAMRA branches also use meetings, local newsletters and local websites to inform members about developments in their area and local beer festivals play a key role not just as fund raisers but also to keep people informed about the vast range of beers that are still available to enjoy.

Help play your part by joining CAMRA today at this festival.

OUR NEW SUMMER ALE!

A CORNISH SUMMER IN A GLASS

Once again our brewers have carefully selected a number of the most spectacular hops, this time all from the USA, and using only Cornish pale malt have created a brand new stunning pale ale for the summer. Lushingtons is perfect for those who love new world style hoppy, fruity pale ales, but at a session strength.

“Like Porthleven, our latest beer is named after another of Cornwall’s famous surf spots , Lushingtons , at Porthtowan beach on the North Coast. When the sand banks are good this is one of the finest waves you will find anywhere in the UK”
