We are very excited to welcome in summer 2013! We cannot believe we are already celebrating our third summer at our new facility.

There is a lot going on at the “J” this summer, and we’d like to take this opportunity to highlight just a few of our offerings:

• This year, we are increasing our range of programming at Camp Shelanu by offering more specialty camps, ranging from Lego® to Circus themes. Your child will love what we have in store, so check out our Camp section for all the details, and enroll today.

• What better way is there to celebrate the summer, than by gathering together on June 2nd for our food festival? Bring your family and friends to the “J” and experience Jewish culture through food, music and dancing.

• Our Aquatics Director is busy filling up the pool schedule with swim classes and activities, so be sure to schedule in some time of your own to spend at the pool this summer.

When we say everyone is welcome at the “J”, this is something we take seriously. We try to accommodate all who want to participate in our programs, no matter their financial situation. This is why we have set an ambitious goal of raising $20,000 in scholarship funds. You can help us reach our goal and beautify our pool deck by “adopting” a sea creature on our concession building mural. See details inside the program guide and be sure to check out the mural progress the next time you are at the “J”!

We look forward to seeing you this summer, and hope to get to know you at our programs and activities outlined in this guide.

Warmly,

Bryna Rapp Larry Rocamora Steven Schauder JCC Advisory Co-Chair JCC Advisory Co-Chair Executive Director

I am so excited to have this opportunity to share what we have available this summer for Levin JCC Members. The richness of our offerings make my job as Membership Director a true pleasure, because it means that I have the opportunity to help you make the most

of your membership experience by finding programs and activities that are tailored to your interests.

Let me highlight just a few things going on at the “J” this summer, so you can take advantage of your membership to the fullest. First of all, our two outdoor pools boast the largest twisting waterslide in Durham, and are open from May 5th to September 15th (that’s the longest outdoor pool season in the Triangle!). That means that you have four and a half months to relax by the pool with friends, participate in our swim classes, and enjoy getting refreshed during our hot summers.

On days that you’d rather be inside, why not take part in a group exercise class (offered 7 days a week). From Zumba® to Yoga, and everything in between, the Levin JCC offers a wide variety of activities. If you enjoy basketball, then our long-standing pick-up basketball games are not to be missed.

Then there are days when you just need to catch up on emails while enjoying a fresh homemade pastry and a cup of coffee. Think of our gorgeous atrium as your home away from home and make yourself comfortable. Kick back and relax while using our free Wi-Fi, and drop the little ones off at childcare – you deserve it!

Please keep in mind that the Levin JCC Membership experience expands beyond our walls (and our pool deck). We are building a community in the Durham-Chapel Hill area, and we want to make you feel at home. My door is always open and if we haven’t met already I hope to have the opportunity to get to know you and your family this summer.

Best regards,

Lorna Siegal Membership Director [email protected] (919)354-4950

P.S. If you know people who’d like to learn more about the JCC, please invite them to our New Member Open Houses April 28th or June 2nd from 11:00am-2:00pm.

“the Role of Literature and Poetry in the spiritual Life of the Community, with Professor Moshe Itzhaki”

“… And you offer your compassion to the hungry…” (ISAIAH, 58;10). The life of a community is built on the celebration of joyful, formative experience. At the same time, there are also significant periods in our individual and collective lives of loneliness, pain, sorrow, disease, parting and death. In these moments, when the individual (or community) needs comfort and support, often we are left without words.

In this workshop we will read a diverse selection of texts from Hebrew and world poetry and literature, demonstrating their potential to build a “bridge of words” over what sometimes feels like an abyss. We will build a space together: a kind of cradle in which the human spirit can grow and be strengthened during difficult times.

Professor Moshe Itzhaki, Graduate Studies Faculty, Head of the Program of Multi-disciplinary Studies in Humanities, Oranim-Academic College of Education, and author of several books of poetry. Date: July 2, 7pm Cost: Free for the community

Children will fit into one of three groups: Parent/Child, Preschool, or Youth Lessons.

First Day Evaluation:

Every child comes to swim lessons with a different set of skills and a different level of comfort with the water. Perhaps they haven’t been in the water since last summer, and you are unsure about their ability. For Preschool and Youth swim lessons you will no longer have to determine this for yourself when registering for lessons. On the first day of lessons, we will assess your child to assure that he or she is with a class of similar abilities.

Cancellation and Make-up Policies:

All programs are subject to change or cancellation due to insufficient enrollment. Register at least 48 hours in advance by calling the Welcome Center at 919-354-4936.

In the event of inclement weather, or pool closure, lessons may be postponed as the situation dictates. Lessons postponed for these reasons may be rescheduled for Fridays, at the same time of day.

Due to pool space and instructor availability, we will be unable to provide make up lessons for individual participants who are absent.

Parent/Child:

(30 min, Ages 6 months – Under 3 years)

This is a water orientation class for parents and their children. This class includes songs, games, and toys in order to make the children feel more comfortable in the water. Parents will learn how to hold their children in a way that is safe and will encourage proper movement through the water as they learn basic aquatic skills. As their comfort level improves, they will begin to use instructional flotation devices and work to move more independently through the water under their parent’s guidance. Children must have complete head control to take this class.

Preschool:

(30 min, Ages 3 – 5 years)

This program offers many children their first experience in the pool without parental assistance. The children are taught the basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming. Classes are progressive. Children who have no experience or comfort in the water will focus on learning how to move in an aquatic environment and increasing their comfort level. More comfortable students will learn to swim independently with flotation and how to propel themselves through the water on their own, while developing the stamina to move greater distances across the pool. Advanced swimmers will develop skills in strokes such as freestyle, backstroke, and elementary backstroke. Breaststroke and sidestroke may be introduced.

• Morning Sessions (Monday – Thursday) 8 classes: 10:20-10:50am; 10:55-11:25am June 17 – June 27; July 8 – July 18; July 22 – August 1; August 5 – August 15

Youth:

(45 min, Ages 6 and up)

Youth swim lessons will cover a variety of skill levels. Some students may have little to no experience in the water and will focus on learning how to move in an aquatic environment and increasing their comfort level. Other swimmers will learn to swim independently with flotation and how to propel themselves through the water on their own, while developing stamina. Swimmers will begin to learn stroke mechanics, beginning with freestyle, back stroke, and elementary backstroke. As skill and endurance advance, students will be introduced to other competitive (breaststroke and butterfly) and non-competitive (sidestroke) strokes.

• Morning Sessions (Monday – Thursday) 8 classes: 11:30am-12:15pm June 17 – June 27; July 8 – July 18; July 22 – August 1; August 5 – August 15
