¡ Winning and working hard are important to the West Virginia University cross country team. But becoming successful and positive role models on and off the course is just as significant.
¡ Each year, the Mountaineers work to give back to Morgantown and surrounding communities.
¡ The WVU cross country team has donated its time to helping the Jerry Lewis Telethon that is aimed toward helping kids with muscular dystrophy and related diseases. The Mountaineers do their part to help the cause by answering telephones, which are constantly ringing with donors.
¡ The team also regularly donates its time and knowledge by hosting and teaching local youth track clubs the fundamentals of the sport. Along
with strengthening the youngsters’ skills, they also teach the participants the importance of good sportsmanship, courage, determination and hard work.
¡ Coach Cleary’s student-athletes can also be found reading to children at local elementary schools in the “Read Aloud” program. During their visits, the student-athletes read to students in several classrooms and encourage them to apply themselves to their studies.
¡ Mountaineer coaches and players also take part in Relay for Life of Monongalia County, the American Cancer Society’s signature activity, which offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Mountaineers are frequent visitors to the WVU Children’s Hospital and help several different local community service projects.

¡West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults.
¡While many of the headlines center on the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include a string of 10 consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American.
¡To help its student athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in.
¡A total of 340 student-athletes were recognized for their achievement in the classroom last spring, at the annual WVU Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Banquet, honoring recipients of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Implemented in 1989, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
The Mountaineers are provided with an academic adviser who devotes their time to ensuring student-athletes are provided with any assistance necessary to ensure academic success.

¡West Virginia University’s graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive, to say the least, over the past eight years. The ratio of student-athletes graduating to the general student body has increased almost every year.
¡The West Virginia University women’s cross country team, men’s basketball team and women’s soccer team received public recognition in the spring of 2010 by the NCAA for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. These teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The women’s cross country team was one of seven Mountaineer teams to earn a perfect APR score in 2011-12 alone. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
¡The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the "voice of the student-athlete" on WVU's campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

With his expertise in mentoring, training, conditioning and recruiting distance runners, the Georgetown, Ontario, native has built West Virginia’s cross country program into a national powerhouse with seven All-Americans and numerous all-conference runners. Cleary used the 2012 season to build on his cornerstone of competing and winning at the highest level as the team entered a new era in the Big 12 Conference. Sarah-Anne Brault returned from training for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London for her !nal season as a Mountaineer and ran in her fourth consecutive NCAA Championship. #roughout the season, Brault garnered all-conference honors for the second time in her career, all-region honors for the third time and !nished her career by becoming the 13th runner in
program history to individually qualify for the NCAA Championship. #e Mountaineers !nished No. 8 in the country in 2011 at the NCAA Championship – their fourth top-10 national !nish in !ve years. Cleary’s team !nished in fourth place at the Big East Championship and followed it with a third-place mark at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. He then led his team to an eighth-place !nish at nationals where Kate Harrison and Kaitlyn Gillespie became All-Americans, with Harrison !nishing in eighth place, an all-time WVU best individual !nish for the event. In 2010, Cleary sent Gillespie and Brault to the NCAA Championship, where Gillespie became Cleary’s sixth All-American with a 34th-place !nish in 20:46 and Brault arrived in 71st place overall. Ranked in the top 10 all year, the team received its highest ranking as a program at No. 3 midway through the season. Between indoor and outdoor track that year, 11 All-America honors were distributed and Bland, Grandt and Asselin became the !rst Mountaineers to achieve the status in three sports in the same year. Overall, 17 All-American nominations were given to WVU athletes between cross country, indoor and outdoor track during the year. At the completion of the 2009-10 cross country and track seasons, WVU was recognized as the !#h-best team on the Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award list announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross County Coaches Association

"e group was ranked 17th in the nation in terms of overall grade point average (GPA) and had the second-highest GPA in the Big East with a 3.61 average. Cleary previously had been the distance coach in 2005 and 2006 and was a full-time assistant from 2001-04, serving as the primary coach and trainer for the cross country team during that span. Prior to the 2001 season, Cleary served as a graduate assistant coach for eight seasons at WVU. Runner’s Set...Go! A Look at the 2013 Mountaineers
XC Season Preview !e Mountaineers enter 2013 with one of their most talented teams in recent years. A solid mix of experience, youth and overall depth has West Virginia poised to compete nationally, while running in its second season in the Big 12 Conference.
Newcomers !is year’s Mountaineer squad features 10 freshmen and "ve sophomores on their roster in 2013. !e group is "lled with young runners with the potential to immediately contribute to the program. “Time will tell if this class turns out to be the "nest or one of the "nest classes, but we are excited about their high school accomplishments and their desire to come in and run for the Blue and Gold,” Cleary says.
Cleary’s Foundation Cleary enters his 22nd season with Mountaineers, and seventh as head coach. He has experienced a great deal of success and has seen his runners garner "ve cross country All-America accolades and 25 track All-America recognitions since 2007. “ I think we take care of our runners, make plans and cycle them in and out of competition,” Cleary says. “Ultimately, I want to see every single kid blow away expectations.”
Academic Success !e Mountaineers have experienced
a great deal of success o# the "eld with Cleary at the helm. Six runners from the 2012 team earned USTFCCCA All-Academic distinctions. !e WVU cross country team posted a perfect APR score of 1,000 in 2011, and followed that up with a near-perfect score of 996 in 2012. “A vast majority of the girls in our program could go to Harvard, Princeton, Yale or other premiere academic institutions,” Cleary says. “!ey could be at these types of institutions, but they have faith that West Virginia, both athletically and academically, can allow them to reach their goals.”
Gillespie Emerges as New Leader Kaitlyn Gillespie is poised to step in as the face of the WVU cross country team in 2013. Gillespie earned All-America honors in 2010 and 2011, however was forced to take a medical redshirt in 2012. She is a talented senior runner with the opportunity to earn a third All-America distinction this season. “Everyone has a role as seniors. I expect them to take care of these new faces, and I see Katie as the backbone of that,” Cleary says. “She is an all-around student-athlete and has the sheer desire and work ethnic needed to be successful.”
Local Roots Coach Cleary added three more runners from the state of West Virginia this season, bringing the team total to
eight. !e Mountaineers have always had a roster "lled with local talent and the local interest in distance running has recently increased. In fact, "ve runners on the roster are Morgantown, W.Va., natives. “!e state of West Virginia is "lled with talented runners,” Cleary says. “Sometimes they get overlooked when it comes to recruiting, but they always seem to prove their worth in college, and I’m always thrilled to see local talent develop.”
Cleary Named President of USTFCCCA A$er serving as the vice president for two years, Cleary was named the President of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. !e non-pro"t organization represents Track & Field and Cross Country coaches at all levels. It serves as an advocate for both sports, while also providing a leadership structure to assist the needs of its membership. “I really believe it’s a privilege to be the head coach at West Virginia and with that comes the responsibility that we hold this institution in a great light,” Cleary says. “We’re shaping and scoping the future of the sport. But I think the biggest thing as coaches is we are mentors to these kids, we’re mentors to other coaches and we are put in positions to build relationships with high school coaches and other coaches, where we should give back.”

International Success !e Mountaineers were well-represented in the 40th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Poland in March 2013. !ree WVU runners crossed the "nish line in the top 50, with all three representing di#erent countries. Sophomore Sydney Scott "nished 38th, while representing the United States. Freshman Jillian Forsey crossed the "nish line in 49th, while representing Canada and freshman Amy Cashin "nished 50th representing Australia. !is is just one example of the multiple international honors West Virginia runners have recently received.

What are the expectations for the eight newcomers you’ve added this season and what do they bring to the Mountaineer program? !e graduating seniors this past year completed one of the "nest runs in program history. What’s exciting about our future is that we still have excellent depth returning with arguably the best recruiting class on paper. Eight new faces - four Canadians, an Australian, a few really good West Virginia kids, and we’re adding another from Ohio. Leading this year’s team should be Katie Gillespie - a two-time All-American. Kelly Williams
showed tremendous improvement last year. And locally, we’re looking at Sarah Martinelli, having come o# a breakthrough junior year, to step up as one of the leaders in the program this year. We had a lot of redshirting last year. !ose kids gained experience. It’s one of the better blends of senior leadership, depth and incoming talent - probably the way that any successful program should be run. It will be exciting to see this group unfold.
Senior Kaitlyn Gillespie sat out last season, but has two All-American distinctions to her name. Is she poised for an impressive senior campaign? Katie Gillespie is the epitome of what an all-around student-athlete should be. A 3.9 GPA and a two-time All-American. What separates her from the rest isn’t the fact she’s been an All-American, it’s the pursuit of excellence. And no stone will be unturned in her pursuit to make a comeback and get to the front of the NCAA Championships again. She’s been out 15 months. My feeling is that when she actually puts on the uniform, she will have not missed anything. I’m excited about that. Within the classroom, on the "eld, just sheer desire and work ethic. She’s cross training two to three times a day on a bike and in a pool. In addition to minimal running as we’re trying to bring her back. I’m beyond excited and expect very big things from her this year. Rarely do I come across a student-athlete who has my goals for them or higher, and Katie is de"nitely one of those student-athletes. She should be the backbone of it. Eight freshmen for us is huge. !ose kids are going to need a

going to need to step up and help.
What has been your philosophy when it comes to academics and why has your team been so successful in the classroom? Years ago, when I "rst started recruiting to West Virginia, you heard academic stereotypes - very frustrating to me. I can actually lay claim to statistics that say there hasn’t been a female student-athlete in our program who came in with a goal and didn’t achieve it. Meaning, if they wanted to become a doctor, they became a doctor. If they wanted to become a dentist, they became a dentist, and on and on. It’s a 100 percent success rate for us. And, as time goes on, it becomes easier to bring in a higher level of student-athlete because of the kids we’ve had proving this. One of the prouder statistics is that there has never been someone who didn’t come in, work hard and not achieve what their goal was when they entered the door. I hope that continues. Part of that is recruiting - those are the types of kids we are recruiting. On the %ip side, we have a philosophy here at West Virginia, and that is we are student-athlete driven. I am convinced that as a coaching sta# we can take a look at the needs of each and every one of them individually, take care of their academic needs, not train them and treat them like robots, but allow them to come together and still create a great team atmosphere. If someone has a chemistry exam and I know there is a minor meet, and I think it will help this kid to stay home and take this exam and not have to take a cumulative at the end of the year, then I’ll leave them at home; that’s a coaching philosophy.
Your program has been extremely successful since you took over. How have you been able to quietly build one of the best programs on campus? When I "rst took the job, I came up with bullet points for myself and I said, ‘We’re going to have tremendous students.’ It wasn’t just a vision of mine. We had good students prior to me. But I saw a correlation between kids who were focused and took care of their business and athletic performances. In distance running, if a kid comes in and works really hard and stays focused, and just loves the sport, we’re going to get a lot out of them. If we’re starting with a good product as a student, I’ll take someone who is a little less talented as an athlete, knowing that in distance running, it’s a sport with sheer hard work. !ere is a lot of room for improvement. It’s just the nature of the sport.
Coach Sean Cleary
Is there a lot of talent in West Virginia? I think there is talent everywhere. Sometimes, there are a few more diamonds in the rough. When they come in and become these phenomenal athletes, that starts the association of them with talent. If you look back to their actual high school performances, if they were that talented, they would have been recruited by other schools. I wanted the best students we could possibly get. I wanted high numbers of West Virginia kids in our program.
What type of relationships have you built with your runners and what is your level of trust with them? I think it has something to do with their character and their desires. No matter if it is Division I or Division II, a distance runner is a distance runner. !ey have desire, they have respect, and they have passion. My goal is to teach them to have more respect for themselves and their teammates. To teach them to not only look at things as an individual, but also to be accountable toward the team. We have those two things. I want to get my kids to a point where they are so self-motivated and they are so driven to do this on their own, that my biggest job is to hold them back. I don’t care if they’re doing summer internships in California or they’re living in Fairmont, or wherever they are. !e vast majority of my job is to actually hold them back from training too hard. I think that is just the nurturing environment of this town. My assistant coaches, some of the pro athletes who have gone on and run, they care a great deal.
You’ve recently been named the President of the USTFCCCA. What is that like so far, and what are some of your responsibilities in that role? I was the vice president for the last two years and just became the president. I think it is important that the veteran coaches give back, because we’re shaping and scoping the future of the sport. But I think the biggest thing as coaches is we are mentors to these kids, we’re mentors to other coaches and we are put in positions where we can build relationships with high school coaches and other coaches where we should give back. I really believe it is a privilege to be the head coach at West Virginia and with that comes the responsibility that we hold this institution in a great light. We’re all busy and while it’s going to be time consuming, I feel it’s important. I have a perspective in cross country and distance running and I hope to help a lot of younger coaches. !e bottom line with my belief system is that I believe that instinctively we are all procrastinators. We all put o# sometimes. But I think that with these kids, if they’re going to work hard at something, I think our job is to get them to work a little bit harder and really get rewarded. Whether that is in athletics or academically, or just making the right decisions in life, it’s okay to go for something. And that’s what we’re trying to teach them.

Big 12 Welcome Riding its fourth top-10 !nish in the last !ve years, the West Virginia University cross country team entered one of the best conferences in the nation, the Big 12 Conference, on July 1, 2012. "e Big 12 has seen huge national success in the sport of cross country with the conference producing three national champions, four runner-ups and four individual titles. "e conference has sent at least three teams to the NCAA Championships every year, with a record-breaking eight attending the championships in 1998. "e conference emphasizes the cornerstone of coach Sean Cleary’s program – competing and winning at the highest level.
Brault Goes 4-for-4 Senior Sarah-Anne Brault returned for her !nal season as a Mountaineer and !nished by going to the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in her career. Brault, who was the !rst alternate for Canada in the triathlon for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, sat out the !rst part of the season and only saw action in the championship portion. Brault ran her !rst race at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas and came in 10th. "e Winnipeg,
Ontario native received All-Big 12 honors and !nished her career with two all-conference honors. Brault continued her success at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals where she !nished a career-high seventh with a season-best 6k time of 20:35. Brault garnered All-Region honors for the third year in a row on her way to the NCAA Championships where she placed 76th.
Mid-Atlantic Honorees Along with Brault’s recognition, freshmen Sydney Scott and Kelly Williams also received the distinction of All-Region. Williams was the !rst of the two across the line in 22nd place, while Scott followed closely behind in 24th. Both ended their !rst seasons as Mountaineers with season-best times on the course at Penn State. Williams !nished the 6k race in 21:20, while Scott posted a time of 21:21.
Senior Leadership Seniors Jordan Hamric and Aubrey Moskal were depended on greatly for the Mountaineers in 2012. Moskal ran in every race for WVU, while Hamric only sat out one. "e duo of Hamric and Moskal opened the season by !nishing second and third, respectively, at the WVU Alumni
Open. Hamric’s next three races saw the Bruceton Mills, W.Va., native !nishing in the top 25 and posting personal best times. Hamric wrapped up her season with a 65th-place !nish in at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Moskal’s dedication was seen from start to !nish as she consistently was a top !ve runner for the Mountaineers. Moskal did not miss a race for WVU and saw her highest !nish at the Greater Louisville Classic, where the Morgantown, W.Va., native placed 13th with a personal-best 5k time of 18:14.88.
!e Freshman Duo In only their !rst seasons as Mountaineers, Kelly Williams and Sydney Scott were counted upon greatly by WVU in 2012. Williams’ consistent improvement proved bene!cial for WVU as she moved from being the pack runner to a leader in a matter of weeks. Williams’ hard work was seen in the !nal two meets, where she was the second WVU runner across the !nish line in each performance, and gained valuable points for the Mountaineers. Scott started the season with a bang by winning the WVU Alumni Open with partner Jordan Hamric.

Following the conclusion of the 2012 season, Scott competed for Team USA at the World Junior Cross Country Championships, where she placed 38th with a 6k time of 20:19.
Personal-Bests in Austin In its inaugural Big 12 Championship race, WVU had six of the seven runners post personal-best times on the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin, Texas. #is was the "rst time that four of the "ve scoring runners had personal-best times, while WVU also had four runners "nish in the top 30 for only the third time in the 2012 season.
Hard Work in the Classroom Known for one of the highest GPAs on campus, the cross country team continued their tradition of academic success when nine members of the team were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country First and Second Teams. Kaitlyn Gillespie and Kelly Williams were two of 13 student-athletes who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. Jordan Hamric, Sarah Martinelli, Aubrey Moskal and Hallie Portner joined them on the "rst team, while Stephanie Aldea and Chelsea Jarvis were on the second team. Williams and Sarah-Anne Brault would rack up more academic awards at the end of season when the two were named USTFCCCA Division I Women’s Cross Country All-Academic Honorees.

She also set two school records during her tenure. She ran a 16:27.27 in the 5,000-meter and a 34:24.00 in the 10,000 meter during the 1998 outdoor track season. Her mark in the 10,000-meter still stands today, while her mark in the 5,000-meter was broken by
fellow All-American Rebecca Stallwood in 2001. In 1997, Wachera "nished 11th with a time of 17:00 to become WVU’s "rst female cross country All-American.
Megan Metcalfe, a nine-time All-American, is the most proli"c distance runner in Mountaineer women’s track & "eld history and the "rst Mountaineer to achieve two All-America honors in cross country. !e Edmonton, Alberta, native earned her "rst All-America accolade as a member of the 2001 distance medley relay team, which "nished in eighth place. Metcalfe’s second All-America award, and "rst individual, came with a third-place "nish in the 3,000-meter race at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships in a WVU record time of 9:09.95. An outstanding cross country runner, Metcalfe was named the 2000 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Her third All-America honor came with a ninth-place "nish at the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships, making her just the second female cross country All-American in school history and only the fourth Mountaineer to earn All-America honors in two sports. Metcalfe earned her fourth and "#h All-America accolades in 2003 by "nishing fourth in the 3,000-meter at the indoor championships and was a part of the school record setting distance medley relay team in that same meet. Her sixth and seventh awards came in March, 2004, when she was "#h in the 3,000-meter and again was a member of the DMR team. Metcalfe’s eighth and school-record setting All-America honor came at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships where she recorded a 16th place overall "nish. Metcalfe capped o$ her brilliant career with a ninth All-America honor and a national championship when she won the 5,000-meter at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Metcalfe also competed at the World Cross Country Championships twice during her tenure at WVU and competed at the World University Games in Turkey. In 2008, Metcalfe reached the top, as she ran in the 5,000-meter race for Canada in the Beijing Olympics.
