Editor’s Notes
At last we are having some fine weather. As usual in August Cople has adopted a relaxed mode. Activities have slowed down and most people are turning their attention to holidays. The Cople Music Festival is the major exception and Gill Ebbs and her team have been as energetic as ever preparing the event. Some warm weather will make the festival even better. Details can be found on page 33. The police update on page 32 contains a disturbing account of attempted burglaries in the village. It is reassuring that such stories are still news worthy but we need to remain vigilant until the offenders are found. Nick and Pippa Hawker are offering a Tennis Fun Day for 7 to 9 year olds on Wednesday 21st August. See page 10 for details. Ged Peeke

Letter from the Vicarage On a recent holiday to Italy it was fascinating to see how people who were complete strangers to each other grouped themselves. I am sure that it will come as no surprise to learn that people seem most comfortable with others who are like themselves or from a similar background. However, what did surprise me was that when the guide asked us to change seats on the coach and at dinner that people felt threatened and did not want to move. It made me realise that people often find change difficult. Although the members of the congregation can choose to sit in any pew in the church they usually prefer to sit in the same place every week. What can make matters worse is if a new person inadvertently sits “in their pew” they can get annoyed and even ask them to move. Nobody has a right to sit in a particular pew as thankfully the renting of pews was abolished in the nineteenth century. It is not who sits where that concerns me but rather how difficult change can be for some people. Maybe this is why not everyone is able to accept the ministry women Priests, let alone the possibility of women Bishops. Yet both our society and we are changing all the time. When I was a child we did not have central heating, a telephone and the television programmes were shown in black and white. When there were no programmes being transmitted instead we had the joy of watching the test card for hours. Now we have digital television, the internet, blackberries, iphones and so on. Our homes are more comfortable and warmer and we have the means to communicate with each other at any time of day and all over the world. Life is changing and we have no choice but to respond to these changes. So why is change more difficult when it involves sharing a meal together or sitting in a particular place? I think it is essentially because we want to be with people who make us feel comfortable and whose company we enjoy it helps us to feel confident and secure. That why changing anything in church with regard to where we sit and the ministry and worship we like can be difficult. Maybe that is one of the church’s strengths and not a weakness that things change a lot more slowly than in every day life. We still sing hymns that were written by people who lived in the Victorian era and if they speak to our generation why should we discard them.
5
We come to church to worship a God who does not change. God never gives up on us and never stops loving us even if we have lost touch with him. The beautiful building of which we are stewards speaks of his love in as much that anyone and everyone is always welcome. Also you can sit exactly where you wish. I hope that this will be your experience whether you simply want a few minutes of peace and quiet or you would like to join us as one of our services. Finally when I am finding changes in my life difficult I think of these words from the hymn “Abide with me”. Maybe they will help you too. “Change and decay in all around I see; O thou who changest not, abide with me” With all good wishes Lynda Klimas

Mothers Union
In July, members and guests met at Glebe House for a talk by local Rotarians Mary and David Whitehead about the organisation and their recent trip to Kenya.
Their talk was illustrated with slides showing the various projects the Rotarians are involved with both here and overseas. There are 1.2 million members across 2OO countries in the world. Their theme for this year is Engage Rotary and Change Lives. In this country some of the projects include a youth service, community service and Kids Out, where disadvantaged and disabled children are taken out for a day. Projects covered by the international service of Rotary Clubs include disaster relief, work to eradicate polio, education and overseas community projects. Mary and David’s trip to Kenya was to help with two projects providing mosquito nets and a well capping operation West of Nairobi, thus ensuring the community have access to clean water. A few years ago a trip to Siberia saw them involved in improving the area around Lake Baikal for the inhabitants there. A trip to India saw them visit the Jaipur Limb Centre run by Rotary International and also helping in the fight against polio.
Everyone present learned a great deal about the Rotarians and the work they do to make life better for many people both here and overseas. Mary and David were thanked for their enlightening talk and Judith for her hospitality.
We do not meet in August, so our next meeting will be on Monday 9th September when our host will be Gwynneth Akins.
At the Family Service in Cople Church on 1st September, there will be a Mothers Union stand showing samples of our knitting and sewing projects and general information about the MU organisation.

Lord of all peace, whose will is the total well-being of all humanity: May your healing spirit of love be at work in our hearts and our homes, our country and our world: Through your way, your truth and your life, may we find together that peace which you desire for us; through Christ, the Prince of Peace. “Keep inspiring a generation”
We are offering a ‘tennis fun day’ on Wednesday August 21st on Cople Cottage Tennis Court. Is anyone interested? It will be for 7 to 9 year olds or equivalent standard and will start at 10am and finish at 3pm - depending on numbers, we may want to vary these timings but everyone will get lunch. It’s not limited to Cople Lower School so if there’s a friend who’d like to come along that’s fine but numbers will be strictly limited. There will be a barbecue lunch and to cover that cost we will ask for an enrolment fee of £1.50. However we certainly don’t plan on making a profit, so the whole of the enrolment fee will be donated to Cople Lower School Funds. Please email me if you want your child to come. If you’re interested in helping that would be great too!

COPLE VILLAGE TRUST Registered Charity No 1090113
Annual General Meeting held at the Village Hall on 26 June 2013 Chairman’s Report Village Hall The Village Hall continues to be used most days of the week, thanks to the regular bookings. It is with regret that the Trust will lose Marie as a Trustee who has decided to have a break from the Charity, relinquishing her roles as Booking Officer and Trustee. Marie has made a valuable contribution to the Trust and we will miss her! We hope in time Marie may return as a Trustee. A small token of appreciation was given to Marie from the Trustees for her commitment to the Trust. The Trustees are grateful Marie will continue to organise the annual craft fair David Reardon has kindly offered to take on the Booking Officer responsibilities. Playing Field The Playing Field is appreciated far and wide, whether be it cricket, football players or visitors to the village. The Trustees thank Chris for his commitment to the upkeep of the Playing Field. This year we offered the planting of a tree, on the boundary of the field, in the memory of a loved one. This has been taken up and several plantings have taken place. In addition we received a gift of several trees from a local resident. The Trust thanks the Parish Council who give an annual contribution for the upkeep of the field. Finance Our income is derived by regular and ad hoc bookings for the Hall and from the playing field and fund raising activities. Monies are still owed for the mower, which we are gradually paying off, thanks to a contribution from the Parish Council and a grant from Councillors Ellis and Moon. Thanks are due to Catherine for her time in the administration of the Charity funds. Fundraising April 2012 – Keith Moore organised a Quiz Night to fund raise for

the charity – this was a resounding success – many thanks to Keith and his family for the organisation. August 2012 - Annual Proms in the Park - The Trustees provided light refreshments for this event which brought in additional funds. November 2012 – Our annual craft fair took place, many thanks to Marie and her band of helpers. 200 Club – This fundraiser continues to provide much needed funds to the Charity. We do have some vacant numbers which we need to fill. My sincere thanks to all Trustees who give their time freely and to David our Caretaker/Cleaner whose task is always to clean up after others and prepare for the next booking. Sandra Thacker Chairman

Wild About Cople If there’s one bird that epitomises warm summer days then it has to be the swift. The sight of that dark sickle-shaped blade thrown overhead and wheeling and screaming around church towers in villages and terraced houses in towns on thundery, muggy summer evenings are all we need to make summer fully complete. And yet, the population of this enigmatic bird is in freefall. Numbers are crashing and have fallen by up to 30% across the country. Some of this decline is due to falling numbers of insects but most is due to older houses having their wooden soffits, fascias and eaves replaced with tight-fitting plastic fittings which will not allow the birds access to loft spaces and places to nest. When we first moved to Cople there were a regular 7 or so swifts careering around the village skies and now, four years later there are no more than 3 birds this summer. On a recent (and unusually free) Sunday I spent an hour staring up into the clouds and sky and saw not one swift I in all that time (I used to do that sort of thing much more in my teenage years in the late 70’s/early 80’s and would have seen 70 – 80 birds in the course of one hour’s swift and cloud watching!). Almost everything about swifts is otherworldly and has a ‘wow’ factor, for example: Swifts are not swallows but in their own, distinct family, related to hummingbirds. A swift is the fastest bird in the world in level flight – they can reach speeds of up to 90 miles per hour! Swifts never come to land, except to breed under roofs and in old buildings. Swifts are the supreme aerial bird of all time – they mate, feed and even sleep on the wing by flying thousands of feet into the sky at dusk and spending the night ‘sleepflying’ by switching off one half of their brain at a time – this enables them to slowly drift airborne whilst sleeping. They bathe in the air by flying slowly through falling rain. Swifts are fairly long-lived birds – the average lifespan is about 5.5 yrs. One ringed bird, found dying, was at least 18yrs old. It was calculated that this bird had flown about four million miles in its lifetime – the equivalent of flying to the moon and back 8 times! Swifts can fly for over 500 miles in a day in search of weather fronts which provide the right feeding conditions. They feed on the wing and trawl aerial plankton (small insects/spiders etc). Swifts spend just three months with us – the rest of the time they spend in southern Africa. So, I think you’ll agree that swifts really are remarkable birds that need and deserve our help. And how can we help them? By
19
replacing soffits and other roofing structures with traditional wood not plastic wherever possible and not blocking up gaps and crevices under roofs and tiles so allowing entry (the gaps can be very small and should be there for house ventilation anyway). Also, specially-made swift boxes can be put up on houses under the eaves. Then, we and our children, can continue to look out for, watch and listen to the amazing devil bird, deviling, devil screamer or black martin winging around our houses and skies for many more years to come. For more information, a good swift website can be found here: http://swift-conservation.org And the last word goes to Ted Hughes, nature poet, who wrote the following: Fifteenth of May. Cherry Blossom. The swifts Materialise at the tip of a long scream, Of needle. ‘Look! They’re back! Look!’ And they’re gone On a steep Controlled scream of skid. Round the house-end and away under the cherries. Gone. Suddenly flickering in sky-summit, three or four together. They’ve made it again. Which means the globe’s still working, the Creation’s Still waking refreshed, our summer’s Still all to come – And here they are, here they are again Erupting across yard stones Shrapnel–scatter terror. Frog-gapers Speedway goggles, international mobsters. Their whirling blades Sparkle out into blue Steve Halton [email protected]

Letter from The Bedford Tree Fund
Dear All,
We would like to re-introduce the Bedford Tree Fund - an independent charity working to promote the planting and upkeep of trees in the parks, streets and open spaces across the Borough of Bedford.
We urgently need to plant more trees to counteract the effects of drought and disease, as well as the fact that many of our trees are nearing the end of their natural lives. By 2014, we aim to plant 1,000 new trees across the Borough. To help us achieve this, we need to raise funds through donations, gift contributions and other sources.
We welcome donations of any size, and those of £10 or above will receive a certificate and a special mention on our website! We also offer a commemorative tree gift service - an ideal way to remember a loved one or mark a special occasion.
I’d like to draw your attention to section C of the attached leaflet: ‘Tree Planting Idea’. This is an ideal opportunity for local people to initiate tree planting projects to improve their neighbourhood. This is in addition to any tree planting provided through the Community Tree Trust Scheme. We would welcome your views and are happy to discuss any possible ideas or projects.
We’d be very grateful if you could draw attention to the Tree Fund in any parish newsletters or circulars, and guide people towards our website http://www.bedfordtreefund.org/
Many thanks for your support.
Kind regards

Police Update
New Chief Constable Incoming Chief Constable Colette Paul officially took charge of Bedfordshire Police. Recently awarded a Queens Police Medal (QPM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, Ms Paul brings with her a wealth of policing experience having served with the Metropolitan Police Service and South Wales Police. Ms Paul is delighted to have been selected as the new Chief Constable and aims to continue the success which has seen Bedfordshire reduce crime over the last two years. Taking up her role Chief Constable Paul said: “There is no doubt that policing continues to operate in a challenging financial environment, but Bedfordshire has already proved that it can make the necessary savings whilst also reducing crime. I am looking forward to working with officers, staff, and partners to ensure that Bedfordshire is a county where crime is reducing and satisfaction in what we deliver increases.” Current Issues June has seen two attempt night time burglaries and one burglary dwelling (three houses next door to each other) attempts were made at two and entry finally gained in one where the offender made off when the occupant woke up. Nothing was taken from any of these properties and investigations are on going to find who is responsible. Another attempt was made on Northill Road between the 28th and 29th June where window beading was pulled but again no entry made. If you know anything in relation to these crimes please contact Bedfordshire Police on 101. Speedwatch members within the village recently used the Speed Indicator Device in the village and successfully recorded a high number of vehicles travelling in excess speed. Over the next few months Cople will be having periodic speed checks by police also. Thank you to those who took part in the speedwatch scheme. Regards Paul Jones PCSO 4760

This Month’s Gardening Tasks A British Wimbledon winner and some sunshine, we have been truly spoilt this year but after all the rain in the earlier months, watering is now essential to keep everything in your garden in good order. If we humans don’t drink enough, we get a headache and start ailing rapidly and plants are no different. Well, I don’t suppose they get a headache but you get the idea!!! A decent soak once a day, early morning is ideal, will do the trick but don’t forget, plants take their moisture and nutrition from their roots so if your plants have an extensive canopy, say in a container or a basket, make sure the droplets of water don’t just bounce off but actually penetrate the soil. For many plants, little and often is more beneficial than a weekly binge but the plant will soon tell you what it requires so be sure to inspect regularly. The other major task in any summer is deadheading, that is, the removal of all faded blooms so that they can’t produce seed heads. Why? A plant is hard wired to reproduce and it does this by producing seeds. Remove the plant of the plant where this happens, the flower, and it will eagerly create new ones thus giving it another chance of reproduction and giving us another display of colour! My advice to anyone not sure whether a plant will respond to deadheading is give it a go! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you have never fed your plants, this can bring improved results and prolong the flowering period and can easily be incorporated into your watering regime. Potassium (often referred to as potash) is used by a plant to fruit or to flower and so tomato feeds (like Tomorite) which are rich in this are also ideal for floriferous bedding. Be sure to follow the maker’s instructions when adding to your watering can and do resist the temptation to over feed. Other tasks this month include regular hoeing of weeds between plants, a real time saver compared to hand pulling, and it is also a good time to take cuttings from fuchias, helichrysum and osteospermum. Again, unsure as to whether this will work on a particular plant? If it doubt, try it out! The answer to last month’s teaser was, Daisies are so called because they are heliotropic which means they open in sunlight which soon prompted the use of the name ‘day’s eye’. This month’s question, just for fun is, why are Pinks so called? Please feel free to email/phone me with all your gardening queries. Lawn Doctor
