What would be better than a day filled with laughter? Annually celebrated on August 16, it is “Tell a Joke Day” and that’s no joke! This day will be filled with smiles and much laughter from morning till night as everyone shares their favorite jokes. The more jokes that you tell, the more fun you will have and so will those around you. A joke is described as something that is spoken, written or done with humorous intention.

Jokes can be of many different forms: Single word or gesture One-liner Knock-knock Question – answer Whole short story A joke has synonyms which include: Gag Prank Quip Jab Jest

Jokes have been a part of human culture since at least 1900 BC. In moderation, LAUGHTER is healthy, uses the abdominal muscles and releases endorphins (natural “feel good” chemicals) into the brain. Today, tell a joke, listen to a joke, laugh, celebrate, have fun and enjoy!

Special Collection: Digital Yearbook Scans

We recently sent all of our archived Westfield High School yearbooks to OCI (Oklahoma Correctional Industries) to be digitized. DVDs of the high quality scans are available for you to access in the Sumner Room. We can help you copy files to a USB flash drive or email them to yourself.

Movie Night The Hound of the Baskervilles Wednesday, Aug 13 @ 6 PM The original Sherlock Holmes canon consists of fifty-six short stories and four

novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Hound of the Basker-villes is the third of the four novels and was serialized in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902. Set largely in England's West Country, it tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Join us in our new Community Room for a viewing of the 1959 version, the first of many film adaptations to be filmed in color. Starring Peter Cushing and Sir Christopher Lee.

Did you know that Westfield High School’s yearbook was originally called “Rurosa” before the current name of The Shamrocket? We have a Rurosa from 1913 (that year’s staff pictured above) and one from 1923. It changed sometime before 1934 (the next year we have available) as that one has the newer name.

Friends News

The new awnings arrived just in time for the Grand Reopening Celebration! The lettering above the door was also painted to give it more definition which adds a nice touch to the entrance.

The Friends granted a request from the Information Technology Department to cover the cost of software needed for the new server expected to be installed in a few weeks. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, we qualify for special pricing from Microsoft which makes the software much more affordable than it would be off the shelf.

The library also received a donation from Sandy Rowland for funds to purchase a system that counts the number of visitors to the building. Before this, circulation staff kept track using a hand-held device. Thanks, Sandy! Sara Reitmeyer, President Friends of the Westfield Library
