Heart of Polk: Betty Rhoades, Standout Among Volunteers
By ANITA TODDLEDGER CORRESPONDENTPublished: Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 9:41 p.m.Last Modiied: Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 9:41 p.m.HAINES CITY | Betty Rhoades is a standout among volunteers at the Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center. At the end of last year, she had accumulated 15,000 volunteer hours, never misses a day and helps out during special events — and she’s 90 years old.
PROVIDED TO THE LEDGERThe young-at-heart Rhoades dons her Auxilian uniform every Monday morning for a full day’s work in Collation Services at the Hospital.
The sometimes six hours she’s there is spent making sure that nurses have the proper charts for patients — and in Rhoades’ case she works in the mother and baby area.
“I enjoy helping out the nurses and seeing them happy that the work is done,” Rhoades said. “It’s a lot of fun really.”
Although originally from Johnstown, Pa., Rhoades and her husband spent much of their married lives traveling the United States. Bob Rhoades worked for the government and his career required the family to move quite often.
“It was fun and exciting. I didn’t want to leave my friends but I always made new ones,” she said.
The couple had two children and Betty Rhoades spent any free time she had back then volunteering around their activities and church-related functions.
“I always remember my mother just being busy,” said Karen Patelunas, Rhoades daughter. “She is always involved in things and helping others.”
The couple inally landed in Haines City, and Rhoades began volunteering at the Hospital in 1974. She became a life member of the Auxiliary in 1992. She is a former chairwoman of the Collation Services of the Auxiliary and continues to help out with events like the Health Fair, Free Athletic Physicals, and Community Education Programs.“Betty is one of the most reliable persons I know. She is very responsible and took her job as the former chairperson of Collation Services and now as a volunteer in Collation Services very seriously,” said Linda Pilkington, director of community and government relations, Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center. “She is also very personable and works well with the other Auxilians and is always ready to help out in the activities. She is a valuable member of the Auxiliary and a wonderful asset to the hospital.”
When she isn’t helping out at the hospital, she said, she enjoys ceramic classes and volunteering at her church.
“I enjoy meeting people and making friends,” Rhoades said. “It’s just a lot of fun.”

What a great outpouring of friendship was shown
to Barry and me at our farewell pizza party. It was
great to see so many of the great friends we have
made in LHV during the last 6 years. Special thanks
to Terry Barnhart who had the idea for the party
and to Richard and Carol Gould and Richard and
Marian Spiegel for helping pull it together on such
short notice. Thanks Eileen Lemay for the photo of
the group and the signatures of all our friends. This
will hang in a special place in our house so we can
remember you all.
Thanks for the many well wishes, cards, gifts, and
phone calls, and all the helping hands to load the
U-haul. We have enjoyed many fun times together.
We hope many of you will keep in touch with us
and if you are ever visiting Tucson, please give us a
call. Our address will be 8349 E. Cypress Point Lane,
