Information Commons One-StopThe Information Commons is the serious student’s gathering place. Students have access to individual and group study spaces, computers, printers, and various media equipment available for check-out.

The Information Commons is staffed with librarians, learning support faculty, tutors and technology support specialists. Together, they provide workshops and individual reference and research assistance, tutoring in writing, math and other subject areas, and support with e-learning, hardware and software.

Students also have quiet study spaces at the Jane Bancroft Cook Library that houses our printed books and journals, located one-half mile south of the university. In addition, students have access to over 700,000 online resources through the USF System virtual library.

In the College of Arts and Sciences, we are an interdisciplinary faculty in more than 15 academic

disciplines, bound by a shared commitment to the study of human ideas and experience, critical inquiry, creative expression, and open discourse. We are equally committed to the responsibility of instilling these scholarly skills and values in students. In small classes we mentor students, challenging them to achieve and fostering their ability to do so. As a result, our faculty are active scholars, publishing in respected journals and presenting papers at national conferences, and our students are recognized for their scholarship, as well.

Student Scholarly AchievementStudents pursuing majors in the College of Arts and Sciences have a variety of opportunities to receive the kind of learning experiences often found only at expensive private colleges or in graduate school. As students advance, they can be invited to work with their professor on research projects. Such experiences can lead to presentations at national

conferences and even publication credit. An honors program, which culminates in the production of an original thesis, is available to qualified students who wish to add value to their undergraduate credential. In the final semester of all Arts and Sciences degree programs, students take a capstone course, in which they apply and synthesize all their learning as they produce and present mature work in the discipline. In her Research Methods class, DR. ELAINE AUGUSTINE worked closely with MINDA FRASER to develop a research proposal, “How Teaching Music Affects Learning in Individuals,” which combined Minda’s passion for music with her interest in how people learn. Minda was intending to pursue a master’s degree in Psychology, “but after researching this topic,” she said, “I may bring my psychology background to the master’s program in Education instead.”

It is estimated that by 2025, at least one-third of jobs in the United States will be positions that do

not exist today. So, how do we prepare a workforce and leadership for this new economy?

Our commitment to giving our students the tools they will need to keep pace with the rapid changes ahead shapes our College of Business curriculum. While we can’t yet know what new technologies and specific skill sets will be in greatest demand over the next decades, we do know that critical thinking, problem-solving, cross-cultural communication, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team will be crucial to individual success and the success of our community and our nation. Helping our students to acquire and polish these competencies guides our evolving business program.

In DR. JEAN KABONGO’S Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management course, students designed projects to support redevelopment efforts in a local community. USF Sarasota-Manatee student MARSHALL FISHER proposed a diesel biofuel plant for a local brownfield. Per year, the facility would produce approximately one million gallons of high-grade biofuel created from vegetable and other oils. Marshall’s business plan was well received by the community and city officials.

DR. MARIE BYRD-BLAKE encouraged students KATE SHACKELFORD and DANIELLE DREYER to get involved with the PRIDE (Promoting, Recruiting, Increasing Diverse Educators) organization. USF Sarasota-Manatee recognized the opportunities for students and developed the College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership, housing these two areas of study under one umbrella.Hospitality ManagementWhen you check into a hotel or enjoy a meal at a restaurant, an amazing world of management tools — planning, finance, technology, marketing, branding, pricing, logistics, staffing and more — are working together. The School of Hotel and Restaurant Management developed a curriculum that combines essential core courses such as finance, accounting and economics with courses that focus on the application of this knowledge to the hospitality field, including internship courses that provide hands-on experience in the field.

Admission to USF Sarasota-Manatee’s freshman class is competitive based on a variety of factors, including strength of the high school curriculum, record of academic achievement, standardized test scores, and involvement in activities in and out of the classroom. Recommended admission factors include the following:

TRAnSFeR AdMISSIOnSUSF Sarasota-Manatee accepts appropriate transferable semester hours from regionally-accredited colleges and universities. Admissions evaluates prior coursework to determine admissibility to the University. Admission requirements vary based on the number of transferable semester hours earned.

Fewer than 12 HoursApplicants with fewer than 12 attempted transferable semester hours earned after high school are considered First-Time in College (FTIC) applicants and apply for Freshman Admission.

12–29 HoursApplicants with 12 but fewer than 30 transferable semester hours must (1) have a cumulative post-secondary GPA greater than 2.0 (2.5 for business and education), (2) be in good standing with the last post-secondary school attended, and (3) meet the USF Sarasota-Manatee freshman recommended high school minimums.

30–59 HoursApplicants with at least 30 but fewer than 60 transferable semester hours must (1) have a cumulative post-secondary GPA greater than 2.0 (2.5 for business and education), (2) be in good standing with the last post-secondary school attended, (3) submit a high school transcript with a minimum of a 2.5 weighted GPA, and (4) provide minimum test scores on the SAT of

460 in Critical Reading, 460 in Mathematics, and 440 in Writing or on the ACT of 19 in Reading, 19 in Mathematics, and 18 in English/Writing.

60+ HoursApplicants with 60 or more transferable semester hours from a regionally accredited institution or an A.A. degree from an institution within the Florida College System or State University System are considered for admission with a 2.0 or higher postsecondary GPA. Students with an A.S. degree from an institution within the Florida College System are considered for admission into Bachelor of Science in Applied Science programs with a 2.0 or higher post-secondary GPA. Limited access programs in business and education require a 2.5 transferable GPA.

GRAdUATe AdMISSIOnS Admission to USF Sarasota-Manatee’s master’s degree programs is competitive based on a variety of factors. These may include your undergraduate grade-point average, standardized test scores such as the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), letters of recommendation, and samples of academic work. Each program sets the criteria for measuring your potential for success.

Financial Aid Glossary

Cost of Attendance: Refers to the total estimated cost of attending the university for one academic year (two semesters: Fall and Spring). On your award letter, it will be referred to as the budget.

Expected Family Contribution (EFC): This figure is calculated through the completion of the FAFSA. This figure reflects the federal estimate of what a family and/or student can afford to contribute toward a year of college.

Financial Aid package: The amount of financial assistance you receive. A USFSM package may include grants, work study, scholarships, Florida Bright Futures and loans.

Grant: Funds which are considered “gift” aid, based on need and do not require repayment.
