In the College of Arts and Sciences, we are an interdisciplinary faculty in more than 15 academic

disciplines, bound by a shared commitment to the study of human ideas and experience, critical inquiry, creative expression, and open discourse. We are equally committed to the responsibility of instilling these scholarly skills and values in students. In small classes we mentor students, challenging them to achieve and fostering their ability to do so. As a result, our faculty are active scholars, publishing in respected journals and presenting papers at national conferences, and our students are recognized for their scholarship, as well.

Student Scholarly AchievementStudents pursuing majors in the College of Arts and Sciences have a variety of opportunities to receive the kind of learning experiences often found only at expensive private colleges or in graduate school. As students advance, they can be invited to work with their professor on research projects. Such experiences can lead to presentations at national

conferences and even publication credit. An honors program, which culminates in the production of an original thesis, is available to qualified students who wish to add value to their undergraduate credential. In the final semester of all Arts and Sciences degree programs, students take a capstone course, in which they apply and synthesize all their learning as they produce and present mature work in the discipline. Here is a sampling of recent capstone projects:

In her Research Methods class, DR. ELAINE AUGUSTINE worked closely with MINDA FRASER to develop a research proposal, “How Teaching Music Affects Learning in Individuals,” which combined Minda’s passion for music with her interest in how people learn. Minda was intending to pursue a master’s degree in Psychology, “but after researching this topic,” she said, “I may bring my psychology background to the master’s program in Education instead.”

“the small class size gives me the opportunity to get to know every single one of my students—their names, their interests, the career paths they’re considering. i love the interaction.”

It is estimated that by 2025, at least one-third of jobs in the United States will be positions that do

not exist today. So, how do we prepare a workforce and leadership for this new economy?

Our commitment to giving our students the tools they will need to keep pace with the rapid changes ahead shapes our College of Business curriculum. While we can’t yet know what new technologies and specific skill sets will be in greatest demand over the next decades, we do know that critical thinking, problem-solving, cross-cultural communication, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team will be crucial to individual success and the success of our community and our nation. Helping our students to acquire and polish these competencies guides our evolving business program.

The undergraduate curriculum in the College of Business offers bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree in business.

All are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

In DR. JEAN KABONGO’S Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management course, students designed projects to support redevelopment efforts in a local community. USF Sarasota-Manatee student MARSHALL FISHER proposed a diesel biofuel plant for a local brownfield. Per year, the facility would produce approximately one million gallons of high-grade biofuel created from vegetable and other oils. Marshall’s business plan was well received by the community and city officials.

“i was honored to be able to work on a community-oriented project of such magnitude. it wasn’t just a business plan for a final exam but a project with the real potential to improve a community.”

– marshall fisher

Teachers and principals shape the future every day. If you dream of making a difference – in

your classroom and in our community – there’s no better place to start than here. Our guiding principles – learn, lead, inspire, transform – are reflected in every aspect of our program and give our graduates a foundation that will serve them throughout their careers. Benefits beyond the classroomAs a nationally accredited institution, USF Sarasota-Manatee meets the highest standards of professional educator preparation in the United States. Our programs stress real-world clinical experiences, such as those offered in our professional partnership network, which enrich students’ education through the guidance and effective teaching strategies of our faculty and colleagues in the field.  We carry out this work as a community of scholars in an active research environment. Students, scholars and practitioners work together to build successful educational institutions and programs and to positively impact the

lives of students. Every day our faculty and students are in the community, discovering ways we can improve the education of children and adults for years to come, and sharing what we have learned with scholars internationally.

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, students are eligible for the initial Professional Educator Certificate in Elementary Education (K-6) with an ESOL endorsement through the Florida Department of Education. The college also offers several master’s degree programs for students new and/or experienced in the field of education.

DR. MARIE BYRD-BLAKE encouraged students KATE SHACKELFORD and DANIELLE DREYER to get involved with the PRIDE (Promoting, Recruiting, Increasing Diverse Educators) organization. In their roles as president and vice president, the two students worked to increase the diversity of students in the College of Education and raise awareness of the need for diverse educators in public schools. At graduation, Kate received the Outstanding Graduate award from DEAN TERRY OSBORN.

Hospitality and Information Technology are two of the fastest growing industries in Florida.

USF Sarasota-Manatee recognized the opportunities for students and developed the College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership, housing these two areas of study under one umbrella.Hospitality ManagementWhen you check into a hotel or enjoy a meal at a restaurant, an amazing world of management tools — planning, finance, technology, marketing, branding, pricing, logistics, staffing and more — are working together. The School of Hotel and Restaurant Management developed a curriculum that combines essential core courses such as finance, accounting and economics with courses that focus on the application of this knowledge to the hospitality field, including internship courses that provide hands-on experience in the field.

Our prime location as a tourism hot-spot allows our students to work at the best tourism and hospitality companies while they complete their education.

Information TechnologyOur IT program is designed to bridge the gap between computer science and management information systems with an emphasis on knowledge-based computer and information technology, as well as more practical topics including programming, applications, networking, systems administration, and the management of a variety of computing environments. IT continues to shape our nation, inspiring us to develop distinctive concentrations that industry professionals confirm mirror the needs of the industry.

The Information Technology curriculum has been developed utilizing a team-based approach with educators and industry partners to create a rigorous program which reflects current and emerging industry needs.

Most of what you’ve heard about college is true: you have more freedom—a lot

more. You’ll meet a wide variety of people, some of whom will become friends for life.

College is a time to change direction if you want, to break free of who you used to be, and to follow new paths. One of the great advantages of college life is the variety and quality of opportunities outside the classroom.

With a community of culturally diverse students, USF Sarasota-Manatee has a club, organization or society for just about every interest. If you do not see what you want, you can start your own!

Do you love classic films? Or is science fiction/horror more your genre? The Film Society shows movies in Selby Auditorium. Popcorn and sodas, too!

Are you the cerebral type? Get involved with like-minded students in the English Society, History Club, Phi Beta Lambda or the Psychology Club.

Want to take the lead?Make a difference in Circle K International, become a Student Ambassador, or serve your community as an Executive Board member of Student Government.

Want to know what “starboard” means? Then you should check out the Rowing Club. As the first competitive club sport on campus, this team has competed at the level of an NCAA program and races against both varsity and club crews all along the eastern seaboard. To row, all students need is a competitive spirit, some athletic ability and the will to succeed.

Be yourself.
