(Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center) (5) Various Locations NEED TO KNOW THE OPENING WHISTLE WKU begins its inaugural Conference USA Tourna- ment Wednesday night at 6:00 (CT) against Marshall in Birmingham, Ala. The Hilltoppers, seeded fifth, split the season series with the 12th-seeded Thunder- ing Herd, with each winning on its home court. WKU finished in a tie for fourth place in the C-USA regular season, but tiebreakers have the Hilltoppers seeded fifth and needing to win four games in four days to advance to the NCAA Tournament, a feat which they accomplished in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in both 2012 and 2013. Should WKU win on Wednes- day, it would advance to play fourth-seeded and tour- nament host UAB on Thursday at 6:00 PM (CT). In the two regular-season meetings between WKU and Marshall, T.J. Price averaged 19.0 points per game and went 5-of-12 from three-point range (.417), and George Fant averaged 12.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Trency Jackson and Chris Harrison-Docks each added 12.5 points per game in the two contests against Mar- shall. WKU went 2-4 in the regular season against the five teams on its side of the bracket and 7-2 against the six squads on the other side of the bracket. QUICK SHOTS WKU’s last two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2012 and 2013 also came after winning four games in four days in the conference tournament. WKU is 8-1 in its three conference tournaments under head coach Ray Harper and 18-3 with four champi- onships in its last seven conference tournaments overall. WKU has been to 10-straight conference tournament semifinals. A win Wednesday would be WKU’s 20th of the season, marking its third-straight season hitting the mark and 43rd time in program history, which would be tied for seventh-most in NCAA history. Should WKU win 20 games this season, head coach Ray Harper would become the first coach in WKU’s illustrious men’s basketball history to win 20 games in each of his first three full seasons at the helm. WKU leads C-USA and is 45th in the nation in rebounds per game (37.3), and the Hilltoppers are tops in C-USA and 63rd in the nation in assists per game (14.6). Including in Thursday’s win at Charlotte and Saturday’s loss at Old Dominion, T.J. Price, George Fant, Trency Jackson and Chris Harrison-Docks have been WKU’s four leading scorers in 13 games this season. T.J. Price’s scoring average of 17.6 points per game would be the most by a Hilltopper at the end of the season since Courtney Lee averaged 20.4 in 2007-08, and should he finish as C-USA’s leading scorer he would become the first Hilltopper to lead the league in scoring since Jack Jennings in 1991-92 (19.1 ppg). T.J. Price has scored in double figures in 13-straight games and George Fant in 19 of the last 20 games. Ben Lawson has made 17 of his last 24 field goals (.708) spanning eight contests. T.J. Price has 527 points this season, which is tied for the 28th highest-scoring season in program history. T.J. Price has hit multiple three-pointers in 16 of the last 19 games. T.J. Price has made 24 of his last 28 free throws and 40 of his last 47 overall (.851). T.J. Price has dished out 114 assists this season, nearly double last season’s leader (T. Price, 58) and the most by a Hilltopper in the last five seasons. Ben Lawson’s block total of 47 is the most by a Hilltopper in the last four seasons. T.J. Price leads C-USA and is 27th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.423), and George Fant is second in the league and is 28th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (3.4). T.J. Price ranks ninth among active NCAA Division I players in career three-point field goals made (285), 27th in career points scored (1,763) and 75th in career scoring average (14.3), and George Fant ranks 18th in career rebounds (882) and 56th in career points scored (1,598). The 2012 and 2013 WKU squads joined 2011 UALR as the only teams to win four games in four days to capture the tournament crown.

T. PRICE, FANT VOTED TWO OF THE BEST IN THE LEAGUEWKU senior T.J. Price was named to the 2014-15 All-Conference USA First Team, and senior George Fant picked up All-C-USA Second Team recognition in post-season voting. Both players have now been named all-conference selections in three-straight seasons, and this year’s C-USA recognition is the highest of both of their careers. Price was a second-team all-conference selection in both his sopho-more and junior seasons while WKU competed in the Sun Belt Conference, and Fant was an All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team pick in his sophomore and junior seasons as well. Price is WKU’s first conference top-team selection since Sergio Kerusch and Steffphon Pettigrew in 2010-11.

TWO AT 1,500 CAREER POINTSWith both T.J. Price and George Fant having 1,500 career points at WKU, the Hill-toppers have two active 1,500-point scorers for the first time since Tom Marshall and Art Spoelstra in 1953-54. Price hit the 1,500-point mark at Florida Atlantic on Jan. 15, and Fant joined him on Feb. 19 at UAB. In addition, Fant became just the fifth player in WKU history to be in the top-10 in career rebounds and also have 1,500 career points (Jim McDaniels, Ralph Crosthwaite, Art Spoelstra, Tom Marshall).

SENIOR SEND-OFFWKU honored seniors George Fant, Trency Jackson and T.J. Price, along with four student managers, prior to WKU’s 77-61 win over FIU on Feb. 28. Fant and Price played four years at WKU and have been part of two NCAA Tournament teams and two conference tournament championships thus far, and the duo is already in the WKU recordbooks in numerous statistical categories and climbing the lists.

33 DAYS WITHOUT A LOSSWKU won nine-straight games from Dec. 27-Jan. 24, including seven-straight conference games, which was tied for the seventh-longest active streak in the nation at the time it was snapped at LA Tech on Jan. 29. It was WKU’s longest win-ning streak since winning 11-straight games from from Jan. 10-Feb. 16, 2008, and its fifth double-digit winning streak since 1990. The winning streak helped WKU to a 14-5 record through 19 games, which was its best 19-game record since the 2007-08 team was also 14-5 through 19 outings.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TIMES EIGHTGeorge Fant notched eight-straight double-doubles from Dec. 29-Jan. 24, the longest streak by a Hilltopper since cousin Jim McDaniels had streaks of 14- and 12-straight games during the 1970-71 season. Fant averaged 18.0 points and 11.4 rebounds per game during his double-double stretch, and prior to these eight double-doubles he had 11 in the first 108 games of his career.

VETERAN LEADERSHIPThree players on the 2014-15 Hilltopper roster, George Fant, Nigel Snipes and T.J. Price, are in their fourth seasons in the WKU program. The trio has been a part of 75 wins and two NCAA Tournaments since arriving in 2011-12, and the group is 45-18 at E.A. Diddle Arena (.714).

THE “THREE” IS KEYWKU has made at least one three-pointer in 870 consecutive games, dating back to March 15, 1987. The three-point shot was instituted prior to the 1986-87 sea-son, and only five teams have a longer streak of consecutive games with at least one three-pointer than the Hilltoppers. Incidentally, WKU’s streak almost did not survive a game against Denver in 2011, when WKU went 39 minutes and nine seconds before Kahlil McDonald hit the team’s only three-pointer of the game. The two teams with the longest consecutive three-point streaks, UNLV and Vanderbilt, have made at least one three-point field goal in every game since the shot was instituted.

COURTNEY LEE’S NO. 32 RETIREDWKU legend Courtney Lee became the 10th person associated with Hilltopper Basketball to have his jersey retired, when his No. 32 is honored at the UTEP game on Jan. 22. Lee (2005-08) finished his WKU career with 2,238 career points, equal-ing Jim McDaniels for the most in Hilltopper Basketball history. Lee’s 17.6 point-per-game scoring average for his career ranks seventh in WKU history, and he was a senior All-American on WKU’s 2007-08 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team while playing on four 20-win teams during his career. In addition to the career scoring record and ranking seventh in scoring average, Lee ranks in the top-7 in the WKU career record book in eight other categories. Lee’s career record at WKU was 96-34 (.738), and he was 53-7 (.883) at E.A. Diddle Arena.

SWEEPING THE SUNSHINE STATEWith wins at Florida Atlantic on Jan. 15 and at FIU on Jan. 17, WKU won both con-ference games in Florida for the first time since 2010-11. WKU and Florida Atlantic and FIU were conference opponents in the Sun Belt Conference from 2006-07,

when the Owls joined the conference, to 2012-13 before becoming Conference USA foes when WKU joined in 2014-15.

TOPPING TOP 25WKU’s 72-65 win over No. 25 Old Dominion on Jan. 10 was its first win over a ranked opponent in the last nine tries, dating back to a 76-69 win over No. 24 Vanderbilt on Dec. 11, 2009. It was also WKU’s first win against a ranked team at E.A. Diddle Arena since topping No. 18 UAB 81-75 on Jan. 25, 1986. WKU contin-ued its stretch of impressive ballhanding against the Monarchs, as the squad had just seven turnovers in the game and only one in the second half. Including the Dec. 20 game against No. 4 Louisville, WKU has hosted two ranked teams in E.A. Diddle Arena in the same season for the first time since 1997-98 (L, 93-60 vs. No. 19 Xavier; L, 71-52 vs. No. 21 Clemson).

WINS AGAINST RANKED TEAMS SINCE 1985-86WKU has notched 11 wins against ranked opponents since the 1985-86 season, with three at E.A. Diddle Arena, three on the road and five at neutral sites.

FANT EARNS C-USA PLAYER OF THE WEEKSenior forward George Fant was named the Conference USA Co-Player of the Week Jan. 12 for recording his third- and fourth-straight double-doubles in key C-USA wins over Charlotte and No. 25 Old Dominion. Fant started the week with 18 points and 11 rebounds against the 49ers, and he helped WKU knock off the Monarchs with a 24-point, 13-rebound performance. Fant shot 58.3 percent from the field during the week, and he was an impressive 14-for-20 (.700) from the free throw line to help the Hilltoppers move to 3-0 in C-USA play. He finished the week averaging 21.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per outing.

SUCCESSFUL HOMESTANDWKU went 6-1 on its seven-game homestand from Dec. 17-Jan. 10, its longest since 1935, with the only loss coming to No. 4 Louisville by nine points on Dec. 20. During the extended stay at home, WKU averaged 80.3 points per game, out-scored opponents by 18.4 points per outing, shot 45.1 percent from the floor and committed just 10.7 turnovers per game.

ALMOST A CLEAN SHEETWKU committed just four turnovers against Charlotte on Jan. 8 and had none in the second half, despite facing a press and zone defense in the half-court much of the game. The four turnovers were the fewest in a game for WKU since having four in a 67-59 win over against Nebraska in the 1986 NCAA Tournament.

STARTING 1-0 IN C-USAWith the 81-62 win over Marshall on Jan. 4, WKU picked up its first win as a mem-ber of Conference USA. WKU is now 2-1 in opening games in a new conference, winning 66-51 at Morehead State on Dec. 13, 1948 in its first Ohio Valley Confer-ence game and losing 75-66 at Old Dominion on Dec. 11, 1982 in its inaugural Sun Belt Conference contest.

DECEMBER SUCCESSWKU went 5-2 in the month of December to improve to 7-5 at the end of the month. In the last 11 seasons, WKU’s five wins in December were bettered only by the 2004-05 Hilltoppers’ six December victories and matched in 2012-13, 2009-10 and 2006-07.

HARPER WINS 400WKU head coach Ray Harper recorded his 400th career victory with WKU’s 104-62 win over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College on Dec. 29. PLUS-47 ON THE BEARCATSWKU’s 47-point win over Brescia (Ky.) on Dec. 27, 89-42, was its first 40-point vic-tory since beating Kennesaw State 96-55 on Nov. 11, 2006. WKU allowed fewer than 50 points for the first time since surrendering 49 in a 72-49 win over Loui-siana-Lafayette on Jan. 17, 2013. In the game, DJ Clayton recorded 14 points for the second-straight game, and Avery Patterson’s 11 points were his only points of the season since having two in the season opener. The Hilltoppers were led in scoring by three freshmen, those two plus rookie Justin Johnson’s 11 points.

T. PRICE, JOHNSON LAUDED FOR OLE MISS GAMEWKU senior guard T.J. Price was named Conference USA Co-Player of the Week and freshman forward Justin Johnson earned C-USA Co-Freshman of the Week honors on Dec. 15 for their performances helping the Hilltoppers take down Ole Miss in Oxford on Dec. 13. Price had a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds in the key road win at Ole Miss, and 21 of his 26 points came in the second half where WKU erased a 17-point deficit from late in the first half and a 13-point halftime hole to win. Johnson had eight points and seven rebounds off the bench at Ole Miss, helping key the important WKU victory. He hit 4-of-5 free throw tries while WKU went 15-for-15 from the line in the second half, and he also added two blocked shots and an assist while not recording a turnover.

“HOTTY HILLTOPPER”WKU earned the season’s first signature win on Dec. 13 with an 81-74 victory at Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. WKU trailed by 17 with 2:02 to play in the first half and by 13 at halftime before storming back with a 49-point second half to win. WKU went 15-for-15 from the free throw line in the second half to help seal the come-back, giving the Hilltoppers their first road win against a Southeastern Confer-ence opponent since a 70-67 win at Georgia on Nov. 14, 2006. Overall, WKU had dropped five-straight games to SEC opponents.

FANT GETTING TO THE GLASSSenior George Fant’s 50 rebounds through the first seven games of the season were the most through seven contests in his WKU career and most for a Hilltop-per since Juan Pattillo had 74 through seven games in 2010-11. Fant had a career-high 15 rebounds against Saint Joseph’s on Nov. 27, which was the first 15-plus rebound game by a Hilltopper since Pattillo had 18 exactly four years prior to the date in an overtime contest against South Carolina in 2010.

BACK IN THE NIT SEASON TIP-OFFGames against Minnesota, Stony Brook and Saint Joseph’s marked WKU’s fifth appearance in the Preseason NIT, with the last coming in 2009 when WKU went 1-1 in the Baton Rouge Regional before returning to E.A. Diddle Arena and split-ting two games. WKU is now 6-7 in the preseason showcase. Prior to 2009 WKU was in the field in 1997, when the Hilltoppers fell at No. 2 Kansas 75-62. In 1993, Ralph Willard’s squad lost 101-87 to top-ranked North Carolina. In the program’s first appearance in the Preseason NIT in 1986, the Hilltoppers won at Notre Dame 80-63, ousted TCU 96-90 and then beat Memphis 68-67 in Madison Square Gar-den, setting up a showdown with UNLV for the championship, only to suffer a heartbreaking 96-95 double-overtime defeat.

WKU IN “THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ARENA”The Hilltoppers have a long history in Madison Square Garden, starting with fin-ishing as postseason NIT runner-up in 1941-42. Including the win against Saint Joseph’s on Nov. 27 WKU is 19-21 all-time at “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” and this season’s game was its first at the venue since 1986-87. In addition to nine appearances at Madison Square Garden in the postseason NIT from 1942-65, the Hilltoppers regularly traveled to the city in November or December to face Seton Hall, St. Francis or Long Island, among others, during the 1940s and 1950s.

1,700 PROGRAM WINSWith a 77-70 win over Austin Peay in the season opener on Nov. 15, WKU reached the 1,700-win mark as a program in its 2,555th game (.665). Only 18 other pro-grams in NCAA history have reached that milestone, with Texas becoming the 17th just one day before the Hilltoppers. Just one program ahead of WKU on the all-time wins list, UCLA, has reached the mark in equal or fewer seasons than the Hilltoppers, who are in their 96th season of basketball in 2014-15.

WELCOME TO CONFERENCE USAWKU begins its first season in Conference USA in 2014-15 after 32 years as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Hilltoppers went 604-388 overall (.609) and 316-192 in league play (.622) during that span, and WKU won nine regular-season Sun Belt Conference championships and nine conference tournament titles. In addition, WKU had seven NCAA Tournament wins since 1993 while the rest of the league went a combined 0-15. Now in its 20th season in 2014-15, Con-ference USA member institutions have accounted for 115 postseason berths.

PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE USASeniors George Fant and T.J. Price accounted for two of the 10 spots on the Pre-season All-Conference USA Team, as voted by the league coaches. Both have been postseason all-conference selections in each of the previous two seasons. Conference USA head coaches voted on a full predicted order-of-finish in the preseason but voted to release only the top four vote-getters. The top four favor-ites were LA Tech, UTEP, Charlotte and Old Dominion.

HILLTOPPERS ADD TRIO FOR 2015-16WKU signed guards Fredrick Edmond (G, 6-3, Lansing, Mich., College of Southern Idaho), Marlon Hunter (G, 6-2, Memphis, Tenn., Houston HS) and Chris McNeal (G, 5-11, Jackson, Tenn., South Side HS) to National Letters of Intent in the early signing period. All three are highly decorated, with Edmond listed as a national top-10 junior college player, McNeal named the fifth-best player in the state of Tennessee and top point guard and Hunter ranked the eighth-best player in the state. Edmond will be a junior in 2015-16 with two years of eligibility remaining, and Hunter and McNeal will both be true freshmen.

HOME IMPROVEMENTThe Hilltoppers have improved or maintained their E.A. Diddle Arena win total each season since 2010-11, winning 13 at home in 2014-15 and last year follow-ing seasons of 11, eight and seven dating back to 2010-11.

A BEGINNING, A MIDDLE AND AN ENDWKU had three key non-conference series on the 2014-15 schedule, and all three are in various stages of completion. WKU’s Nov. 22 matchup against Belmont was the start of a four-game series, which will be played at Belmont the next two sea-sons before returning to E.A. Diddle Arena in 2017-18. WKU and Louisville played for the seventh-straight season on Dec. 20, with next year’s meeting in Louisville wrapping up the second four-year series between the Bluegrass rivals. The Dec. 6 matchup between WKU and Murray State was the 152nd in the series dating back to 1931-32 and last currently on the docket.

DEFENSIVE-MINDEDWKU proved its defensive-minded attitude by finishing second in the conference in scoring defense last year and third in 2012-13. Defensive and rebounding are mainstays in Head Coach Ray Harper’s philosophy, and the squad led the confer-ence in rebounding margin a year ago after finishing second in 2012-13.

42 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS | 42 20-WIN SEASONS | 23 NCAA TOURNAMENTS | 7 NCAA SWEET 16s | 1971 NCAA FINAL FOUR6

“20” IS THE MAGIC NUMBERAfter finishing last season with a 20-12 record, WKU has now secured a 20-win season in back-to-back campaigns and eight of the last 10 years overall. In the last three instances of the Hilltoppers stringing together back-to-back 20-win seasons, WKU has followed with another each time. WKU’s 42 20-win seasons rank eighth all-time in NCAA history.

FAMILIAR FACESFor the third-straight year WKU returned four starters from the year before, and the 2014-15 Hilltoppers were comprised of nine returning letterwinners entering the season. The 14-man preseason roster combined for 17 varsity letters at WKU, the most since the 2008-09 squad also had 17 combined letters of experience. In all, WKU returned 72.5 percent of its scoring and 54.3 percent of its rebounding from 2013-14 entering the 2014-15 campaign.

NEWCOMER BREAKDOWN AND PREVIOUS SUCCESSWKU welcomed five newcomers in 2014-15, and the crop was comprised of four freshmen and one junior college transfer. All four of the freshmen helped their high school squads to at least 19 wins in 2013-14, and two were finalists for their state’s Mr. Basketball award (Justin Johnson, Rob Marberry), with Marberry win-ning it for Tennessee’s Division II-A. Marberry and Avery Patterson helped their squads to state tournament championship game appearances.

HARPER AT THE HELMRay Harper is in his fourth season as head coach of the Hilltoppers in 2014-15 after taking over on an interim basis on January 6, 2012 and in a full-time role on February 19, 2012. Before taking the top seat on the bench, Harper had been an assistant on the WKU staff since 2008-09, and he brings 12 years of head coach-ing experience at Division II Kentucky Wesleyan and NAIA Division I Oklahoma City University to the head seat at WKU. Harper won two national championships at both Kentucky Wesleyan (1999, 2001) and Oklahoma City (2007, 2008) and earned runner-up finishes on five other occasions (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006).

SCHEDULE NEWS AND NOTESWKU’s 30-game schedule includes 12 non-conference games and an 18-game Conference USA slate in the Hilltoppers’ first season in the league, and WKU par-ticipates in the 2014 NIT Season Tip-Off culminating with a Thanksgiving night trip to Madison Square Garden in New York City. Highlights of the non-confer-ence schedule include the start of a four-year series with Belmont and Louisville’s first trip to E.A. Diddle Arena since 2010, and the Hilltoppers will travel to Murray State and Ole Miss. WKU faces all 13 Conference USA opponents at least once and will play home-and-home series with Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Mar-shall and Old Dominion.

NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULEEntering the 2014-15 season, WKU was a combined 211-122 (.634) against its 12 non-conference opponents. WKU had previously met four of the 12 at least 32 times (Austin Peay, 38-14; Bowling Green State, 22-10; Murray State, 98-53; Lou-isville, 39-38) but six of the other eight non-conference foes just twice or fewer. When Louisville visited on Dec. 20, it was the first visit by a current Atlantic Coast Conference team, not including Louisville’s 2010 trip to E.A. Diddle Arena, since Virginia came to Bowling Green on Jan. 2, 2006.

TURN ON THE TUBEWKU is scheduled to make 24 television appearances in 2014-15, including two games on FSN, one on CBS Sports Network, one on FS1, five on the American Sports Network, one on ESPNU, one on ESPN3 and 13 on Fox College Sports through the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network. Barring any additions to the broadcast schedule or postseason play, by the end of the season WKU will have made 232 television appearances in the last eight seasons.

IT’S NOW “COACH” CROOKWKU’s fourth-leading assist distributor, Jamal Crook, is in his first season as a graduate assistant for the Hilltoppers in 2014-15. Crook lettered four years at WKU from 2009-10 to 2012-13, and he played on two NCAA Tournament teams in 2011-12 and 2012-13. After graduation, Crook played professionally in the Na-tional Basketball League of Canada for the Ottawa SkyHawks in 2013-14, where he averaged 11.8 points and 3.4 assists per game.

2013-14 SEASON IN REVIEWAt 20-12 overall and 12-6 in Sun Belt Conference play, WKU’s 2013-14 campaign finished with multiple milestones. WKU earned its first 20-win regular season since 2008-09, and the Hilltoppers picked up 13 home wins for the first time since 2008-09 as well. The second-place finish in the conference was WKU’s best end-

of-season standing since winning the SBC East Division in 2008-09. WKU finished its time in the Sun Belt Conference playing in 10-straight tournament semifinals and 23 in 32 years as a member of the conference. In addition, WKU started 4-0 on the road in league play for the first time since 1969-70. T.J. Price and George Fant both hit the 1,000-point scoring mark in their WKU’s careers during the season, and Chris Harrison-Docks finished the season ranked third in the nation amongst freshman in free throw percentage at .867 (52-for-60).

BOWLING GREEN A COACHING HOTBEDEach of the last 12 full-time WKU head coaches, including Ray Harper, have taken teams to the NCAA Tournament, beginning with E.A. Diddle in 1940.

PAYING HOMAGE TO “BIG JIM”Senior George Fant wears number 44, which is the same number his cousin, Jim McDaniels, wore at WKU from 1969-71. McDaniels was a three-time All-American as a Hilltopper, led the team to the 1971 Final Four and is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,238 career points. McDaniels’ uniform also hangs in the raf-ters at E.A. Diddle Arena.

HILLTOPPERS IN THE PROSWhen former Hilltopper Jeremy Evans made the Utah Jazz opening-day roster for the 2010-11 NBA season, he became the second former WKU star on an NBA roster. He and Courtney Lee of the Memphis Grizzlies give WKU two active NBA players at the same time for the first time since 1993-94 (Tellis Frank, Minnesota; Darnell Mee, Denver). A total of 21 former Hilltoppers were active in professional basketball in the United States or elsewhere in 2013-14.

HEAD COACH RAY HARPER CAREER RECORD: 412-110 (16TH SEASON) RECORD AT WKU: 70-47 (4TH SEASON)

After a 20-win season and the school’s best finish in Sun Belt Conference play in five years in 2013-14 and on the heels of back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, Ray Harper enters his fourth season as Hilltopper head coach in 2014-15.

In three seasons under Harper, the Hilltoppers are 8-1 in conference tournament action, resulting in two championships and automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2013. WKU has secured back-to-back 20-win seasons the last two years, and by finishing second in the Sun Belt Conference in 2013-14, WKU laid claim to its best league finish since 2008-09, when Harper was an assistant coach.

In all, in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Oklahoma City University and WKU entering 2014-15, Harper has a 393-99 record (.799) and has won four national championships and five national coach of the year awards, and 13 of his 14 full-season squads won at least 20 contests.

The 2013-14 Hilltoppers went 20-12 on the season with a 12-6 mark in Sun Belt Conference play, which was good for a second-place finish in the league and the squad’s best conference result since winning the east division title in 2008-09. WKU secured a double-bye to the semifinals of the conference tournament in March, meaning the Hilltoppers advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament in each of its final 10 seasons in the Sun Belt Conference and 23 of its 32 years as a conference member overall.

Harper and staff helped T.J. Price and George Fant to All-Sun Belt Conference recognition after the season, as Price was named a second-team performer and Fant was picked to the third team, both for the second-straight season. Chris Harrison-Docks was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year after playing half of the season after sitting out due to NCAA transfer requirements after arriving from Butler, and he became the first conference freshman of the year from WKU since Courtney Lee in 2004-05.

WKU secured key wins in 2013-14 over NIT participant Southern Miss and CIT champion Murray State to go along with its 12 conference victories, and WKU battled NCAA Tournament number-one seed Wichita State in the season opener and sixth-ranked Louisville on the road in non-conference play.

After a 2012-13 regular season plagued with injuries to multiple key players in December and January, the Hilltoppers began to hit their stride in mid-February and finished the regular season winning three of their last four games, with the only loss coming to conference champion Middle Tennessee.

Seeded sixth in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Hot Springs, Ark., WKU won four games in four days for the second-straight season to win the tournament championship, becoming the first team in NCAA history to achieve the feat in back-to-back seasons. From there,

the Hilltoppers advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where they put a scare into top-seeded Kansas before dropping a hard-fought, seven-point decision in Kansas City, Mo.

WKU finished the 2012-13 season with a 20-16 record, giving the program its 41st 20-win season. Harper helped George Fant and T.J. Price to All-Sun Belt Conference recognition in 2012-13, and Price was named the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player, giving WKU the most outstanding player in each of the last two tournaments.

After taking the helm of the team in a tough situation midway through the 2011-12 season Harper began to put his stamp on the program, and the team responded in a big way. The Hilltoppers went 11-8 after he took over and 7-1 after he was named full-time head coach, which came after starting the season with a 5-11 record.

In winning seven of its last eight games, WKU won a game against conference rival Arkansas State on a buzzer beater, defeated conference champion Middle Tennessee two days later in front of a sell-out crowd at E.A. Diddle Arena and then stormed through the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Hot Springs, Ark., capturing four wins in four days to earn its eighth tournament title and head to the NCAA Tournament for the 22nd time.

Seeded seventh in the conference tournament, WKU defeated FIU, second-seeded UALR, third-seeded Denver and number five North Texas to become the lowest seed to win the conference tournament in 35 years of Sun Belt Conference postseason competition.

WKU was seeded 16th in the NCAA Tournament and traveled to Dayton to play Mississippi Valley State in the first round on March 13, where it earned a thrilling 59-58 win after erasing a 16-point deficit with 4:51 to play, which set an NCAA Tournament record for the largest comeback with under 5:00 remaining.

By defeating Mississippi Valley State, WKU captured wins in three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2008, 2009, 2012) and became one of just 23 teams in the nation with at least one win in three of the five tournaments from 2008-12.

In all, WKU finished the season with a 16-19 record, and freshman guard Derrick Gordon was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team. His 412 points scored were the third-most by a freshman in WKU history, and fellow rookies George Fant (321) and T.J. Price (270) cemented their places on the list in seventh and ninth, respectively, thanks in part to Harper’s coaching efforts.

Harper was named WKU’s 14th full-time head coach in its illustrious men’s basketball history on February 19, 2012, after leading the Hilltoppers on an interim basis since January 6 of that year.
