THIS HAS BEEN OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLEover the past three years as we introducedsignificant improvements to the patientexperience at our hospital, in large part due to our community’s overwhelming support of our $150 million fundraising campaign, which has raised nearly $100 million to date.

When we embarked on our three-yearStrategic Plan in 2012 and launched this pivotal campaign to carry out our bold newvision, we made a commitment to strive forexcellence in integrated patient-centred care to better serve our diverse community, which is growing and aging at a faster rate than many other regions in Canada. We alsopledged to become a leader in improving the patient care experience in Ontario’s healthsystem where over 80 per cent of all hospitalcare is provided by community hospitals.

We are proud to report on theachievements in the final year of our plan and demonstrate that, in partnership with our community, we are moving in the rightdirection to realize our goals.

Thanks to the remarkable generosity of Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg, we are in the midst of planning renovations to theCharlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency – one of the busiest in Canada with over100,000 visits annually – to improve the userexperience, streamline care and ensure we canserve the growing volume of patients who usethe emergency as a gateway to our services.

The core value of our culture at North York General

is that our patients comefirst in everything we do.

Message from the Presidents

DR. TIM RUTLEDGE TERRY PURSELLPresident and CEO President and CEONorth York General Hospital North York General Foundation

We are also creating the new Steinberg Family Acute Care Unit with 40 state-of-the-art beds and a dedicated stroke unit to helpreduce bed wait times for patients.

As you will read in this report, the patient journey often begins in the emergency department and our goal is to optimizethat experience and enhance access to all of our services throughhospital-wide improvement efforts.

We are committed to not only adopting the best practices for our patients, but conducting research to transform health care, here and across the country. Philanthropic support is vital to ourinvestment in the Institute for Health Care Innovation and torecruiting up to six research chairs and accomplished scholars whose work in their respective disciplines will enable us to furtherimprove care, while reducing costs and wait times for our patients.Dr. Frank Sullivan, the Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine, who joined us last year, isalready making an impact on practice-based research and we arenow recruiting for the next chairs.

Everything we have accomplished and aspire to achieve is in direct response to our community’s escalating demands foraccessible, specialized and personalized health care. We are now at a critical point in our campaign and we encourage everyone in our community to invest in the future of their hospital so we can provide our patients with the best care today, and drive thehealth innovations of tomorrow.

An active, inquisitive 15-month-old toddler with

a radiant smile revealingfive new teeth, Jenna’s

outward appearance showsno signs of the trauma

she endured undergoing a heart transplant

at just six months old.

J E N N A’S J O U R N E Y

Her mother, Sarah, had a normal pregnancy and Jenna was born at North York GeneralHospital two weeks early but with no complications. Then, suddenly, at five months old,as Sarah turned to look at her daughter in her crib while leaving her room, Jenna started

shaking and moaning, the colour drained from her face and her lips turned purple.“Then she just stopped breathing,” Sarah explains. “There was no movement, nothing.”

Page 5: 2014-2015 ReporttoOurCommunity4x5i92wo8qu258zo818muocf-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/... · “This seemingly innocuous hit occurred at just the wrong time as it coincided

PANIC-STRICKEN, Sarah called to her mother inthe next room. She ran in and started giving Jennamouth-to-mouth resuscitation and CPR, and toldSarah to call 911. The paramedics arrived andtried to revive Jenna but she was unresponsive so they rushed her to the Charlotte & LewisSteinberg Emergency at North York General.

Sarah remembers emergency physician Dr. Rob Simard, paediatrician Dr. ShawnaGranovsky and an army of nurses met them andbegan working on Jenna immediately. “Theyshocked her twice but there was no response andjust as they were going to try a third time, therewas a very weak heart rhythm,” Sarah explains.

“I was in such shock, it was like a dream.Everything happened so fast but I will never, everforget the phenomenal care that Jenna received.I will always be so appreciative of the whole teamat North York General for saving her life.”

An x-ray revealed that Jenna had a mass in her

chest that was pressing on her lungs, which causedthe breathing problems, seizures and cardiac arrest.“There were never any symptoms before this,”Sarah says. “She had been to two paediatriciansfor check-ups and everything was fine.”

Shortly after, an ambulance led by a policeescort rushed Jenna to the Hospital for SickChildren (SickKids). There they determined she had a very rare tumour that could not beremoved because it was literally part of her heart.

After carefully weighing the options, Sarah gave consent for Jenna to have a hearttransplant. “As a parent, I was begging for anoption to return her back to the way she was,”says Sarah. She was told the risks and informed of the lifestyle changes to expect if her daughtersurvived the transplant.

The challenges began soon after Jennareturned home and pulled the feeding tube out of her nose. Sarah rushed her to North York

The Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency is one of the busiest in Canada with more than 100,000 visits a year,

including 36,000 for children and teens.

General to reinsert the tube and had to go backto emergency two or three times a week for thesame problem.

Chief of Paediatrics Dr. Ronik Kanani becameaware of the repeated visits and in collaborationwith the transplant team at SickKids, he beganseeing Jenna in the Paediatric Ambulatory Clinic at North York General. “This enabled us toprovide some of her acute care closer to home,”he explains.

“We already work in partnership withSickKids in our Paediatric Surgical Program andPaediatric Complex Care Clinic so they asked us to follow her here for acute issues that comeup and it has worked very well.”

Sarah says the attention, support andexcellent care they receive at North York Generalhas given her confidence and peace of mind.

“I am so grateful to each and every personwho has joined us on this journey.”

Our PartnershipsPut Patients FirstOur hospital sees over 400,000patient visits a year and while 80 per cent of hospital care inOntario happens at communityhospitals like North York General, there are times when it’s critical to partner with specializedfacilities, such as SickKids. Thesepartnerships help us to providethe right care, at the right time, in the right place – close to home.

Donations EnsureBabies Get Best StartPossibleRoughly 6,000 babies are born in our hospital every year. A newlife is magical but sometimes it’sovershadowed with serious healthconcerns. These babies needspecialized medical equipment to help them grow strong. Andthanks to the generosity of ourAnnual Fund donors last year, we can now provide the bestpossible start with an investment in state-of-the-art incubators forour tiniest, most fragile patients.

Thanks to our generous donors, wewere able to purchase new state-of-the-art incubators for our smallest patients.

Tall and strong for his age, 13-year-old Triple A hockey

player Ali Khaleghi was excited to be called up to play a game with

an older team last November.Watching proudly from the stands,

his father, Mohammad, saw Ali battling two players for

the puck near the boards, then seconds later, Ali was lying

flat on his back, not moving.

A L I ’S J O U R N E Y

“The referee stopped the game, the trainer came out on the ice and then I heardsomeone calling, ‘Who is the parent?’” Mohammad recalls. In that terrifying moment,Mohammad raced onto the ice and found Ali with his eyes rolled back, cheeks red and

steaming, and completely unresponsive when he tapped him and called his name.

Alla, Ali andMohammad Khaleghi

are thankful for theEmergency team at

North York General.

New ECGs MonitorHearts of Our MostCritical PatientsAbout 8,000 people come to our hospitalin cardiac distress each year. Having themost advanced medical equipment allowsour skilled care providers to respondquickly to life-threatening situations. While the Ontario government is oursingle largest supporter, it was thegenerosity of our donors to the AnnualFund last year that helped us purchasenew ECG machines to monitor the heartactivity of our most critical patients.

State-of-the-Art Medical Imaging Suite to Speed Up DiagnosesWith our high patient volumes in theemergency department and increasingdemand for our other programs andservices, the hospital is planning a second,full-service interventional radiology suitefunded in large part through a leadershipgift from Gulshan and Pyarali G. Nanji. The state-of-the-art suite will feature high-resolution imaging equipment toimprove our patients’ long-term healthoutcomes while offering minimally invasive procedures. For more information on how you can support this importantinitiative, please call 416-756-6944 or visitus at nyghfoundation.ca.

North York General Hospital has more than 400,000 patient visits

each year, and growing.

THE NEXT THING HE KNEW, the arena operatoryelled, “He’s not breathing, bring the defibrillator!”A nurse and a firefighter who were therewatching their sons play rushed to assist andMohammad watched in disbelief as they shocked his son once and nothing happened. The second time, Ali started to breathe andregained consciousness.

“I don’t remember much after that exceptthe ambulance came and it took so long to put Ali on the stretcher because they thought he had a head injury,” Mohammad explains.

With police cars blocking major intersectionson its route, the ambulance sped to North YorkGeneral Hospital where emergency physician Dr. Mitch Adelstein and his team were preppedand waiting.

Dr. Adelstein remembers that Ali wasthrashing about and very confused and it wasn’tclear what had happened to him. They securedhis airway by intubating him, sedated him andtook him for a CT scan, which confirmed therewas no head or neck injury.

He then spoke to Ali’s family who hadrecently learned from the hockey coach that Ali

took a slap shot to the chest, skated for a secondor two, and fell to the ice.

“This seemingly innocuous hit occurred at just the wrong time as it coincided with aparticular segment of his heartbeat and threwhim into ventricular fibrillation, which means theheart can’t pump blood and goes into cardiacarrest,” Dr. Adelstein explains. “It’s incredibly rare and almost always fatal. If the arena operatorhadn’t acted so swiftly, Ali would be dead. He’s the real hero in all of this.”

That Ali survived, and survived mentally intact,is statistically nearly impossible, Dr. Adelstein adds.“He is a walking miracle.”

This fact is not lost on Ali and his family whoare all exceedingly grateful to everyone involved fortheir good fortune. “My wife and I are very blessedto have him back and we are so thankful for theamazing care he received,” says Mohammad.

Ali was back on the ice just three weeks later playing the game he loves. To express hisappreciation to all those who gave him a secondchance, Ali wrote thank-you cards and personallydelivered them. “They definitely deserved thegratitude,” he says.

Sitting in her office in the North York General

Foundation this pastFebruary, Alyson Geary feltthe room spinning around

her, her hands were shakinguncontrollably over her

computer keyboard, andher heart was racing.

A LY S O N’S J O U R N E Y

For Alyson, who had been feeling progressively dizzy for weeks, the feeling of urgency was even more severe because the first thing that

came to mind was, “Maybe my cancer is back.”

Page 9: 2014-2015 ReporttoOurCommunity4x5i92wo8qu258zo818muocf-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/... · “This seemingly innocuous hit occurred at just the wrong time as it coincided

DIAGNOSED JUST TWO YEARS EARLIER at age 36 with invasive ductile carcinoma, a seriousform of breast cancer, Alyson had a mastectomyfollowed by chemotherapy. Despite a very good prognosis, she lives with the fear thatcancer can return.

Still, she hesitated to go to the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency right there in the hospital. She thought she was overreactingand didn’t want to be a burden but a co-workerinsisted on walking her there.

“I live every day with the fear of recurrence, especially when I am feeling unwell,” Alyson says. “It’s out of my control to not immediatelythink ‘cancer.’”

Emergency physician Dr. Anton Helman recallsAlyson’s obvious concern and told her she was inthe right place at the right time for the right reasons.

He listened to her, put her at ease by explainingthere was only a slight chance the symptoms were related, and assured her they would do all the appropriate tests. Her blood work and CT scan were normal so he ordered a follow-upbone scan.

“Listening to your patients, giving themrealistic expectations, and making sure they have access to appropriate testing, treatmentsand follow-up, as well as emotional support, iswhat really defines good patient-centred care,” Dr. Helman explains.

“If patients feel they have a true emergencythat needs to be dealt with in a short period of time, then the emergency department is the place that can facilitate access to care. I was concerned for Alyson given her history and symptoms,” he adds.

North York General is the top performing hospital in Ontario in cancer surgery wait times

from the decision-to-treat to treatment. Cancer Care Ontario

The Future of BreastCancer Care is HereHundreds of women and men rely on our hospital for breastcancer surgery each year andmore than half will benefit fromour new Radioactive SeedLocalization Program, the first ofits kind in the GTA thanks to thevisionary support of generousdonors and funds raised at the2014 Heart of Fashion event, presented by BMO FinancialGroup. This unique procedurehelps surgeons pinpoint andremove early stage cancers safely, accurately and less invasively.

Building OperatingRooms of the Future,TodayAs a major regional centre forsurgery, performing over 40,000surgeries a year and growing,North York General is grateful to the Torokvei family for theirleadership gift to purchase eightnew laparoscopic surgical towersfor our operating rooms and to the Koehler family for their gift topurchase 14 new state-of-the-artanesthesia delivery units. Thisleading-edge technology ishelping us to build the operatingrooms of the future for ourcommunity, today.

Fortunately for Alyson, she was already a patient ofthe BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centreat North York General where she received her initialdiagnosis and treatment plan, and she went for ascheduled follow-up appointment with her surgeon.

After an MRI and bone scan ruled out cancergrowth in her body, and a neurologist thoroughlyexamined her when the dizziness did not subside, all of the tests came back negative and the doctorsthought she had had an inner ear virus.

“I am beyond grateful the emergencydepartment was there to put me at ease, assure me I was not overreacting, and help eliminate the worrythat my cancer had returned,” says Alyson, who isVice President of Donor Relations and Special Eventsfor North York General Foundation. “I know I have to listen to my body and try to keep my fears incheck, but when I think something is wrong, I have toremember it is reasonable to ask for help,” she says.

As part of the Karen, Heather & Lynn

Steinberg BreastServices, the BMO

Financial Group BreastDiagnostic Centresupports more than 1,300 patients like

Alyson Geary each year,through diagnosis,

treatment and recovery.

Thanks to donor support, NorthYork General was the first hospitalin Ontario to offer Tomosynthesismammography to our patients.

THE 2014-2015 FISCAL YEAR continued to showcase North York General Foundation as a charitableorganization of choice, helping us to achieve new fundraising records for the second year in a row.

Thanks to the support of our donors, we raised a total of $19.2 million, which surpassed our budget expectation by 35 per cent and exceeded our previous record-breaking year by two per cent. The impact of this increased revenue meant we were able to grant a total of $6.1 millionto the hospital – the most in our history.

We also maintained our best-in-class cost ratio where 78 cents of every dollar raised wasdirected to the hospital and patient-centred care. North York General is dedicated to putting our patients first in all that we do and we thank our donors for providing us with the funds to meet the growing demands of our diverse community.

Sandy WalkerPresident, Volunteer Services, North York General Hospital

In addition to reaching close to $100 million of our $150 millioncampaign goal this year, the foundation generated a record $19.2 million in revenues and made an unprecedented grant of $6.1 million to support the hospital’s priorities – the largest grant todate. And the over $780,000 we raised at our annual Heart of Fashionevent resulted in our hospital becoming the first in the GTA to offer a revolutionary, new procedure for breast cancer surgery.

None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our community. Now, as we turn our efforts to raising the final$50 million of our campaign and to sustaining ongoing funding for this beacon of health care excellence, we hope everyone who walksthrough our front door will join us in demonstrating their pride andgratitude by making a gift to support the important work we do today, and for generations to come.

RON BARUCHChair, Board of GovernorsNorth York General Foundation

Once they cross our threshold, patients will haveaccess to an array of state-of-the-art medicaltechnology, including the new InterventionalRadiology Suite we are planning, made possiblein part by a lead gift from Gulshan and Pyarali G.Nanji, and essential new equipment in oursurgical suites thanks to a generous gift from the Torokvei family.

I am particularly proud of the new Baruch/Weisz Outpatient Care Clinic, which opened inJune and has already had over 8,000 patient visits.

Next, we are planning for the redevelopmentof the historic Phillips House into the first facilityof its kind in Canada for outpatient mentalhealth care for children, youth and women.

IT HAS TRULY BEEN A PRIVILEGE to put mypassion for this hospital into action as the newChair of the North York General FoundationBoard of Governors.

North York General Hospital has been my family’s hospital for more than four decadesso I know first-hand that it offers the highestcalibre of patient- and family-centred care.

This year, thanks to our community’sinspirational support for our $150 millionfundraising campaign, a number of exciting new initiatives were introduced to enhance the patient care experience and to strengthenthe hospital’s position as a leader in its field.

Plans for the renovation of the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency, which includesthe new RioCan Sub-Acute Care Unit, and theredevelopment of the new Steinberg FamilyAcute Care Unit were all set in motion to create a new standard of care delivery, from themoment a patient walks through our front door.
