Dear friends of Oregon Humanities,

THANK YOU. With your support, Oregon Humanities touched many lives across Oregon in 2014, helping people to reflect, connect with each other, and act.

Within our organization, too, we came together to reflect this year. OH’s staff and board articulated a clear and inspiring vision: an Oregon that invites diverse perspectives, explores challenging questions, and strives for just communities.

One small example of how that vision is guiding us is last fall’s Conversation Project tour on racism and white supremacy, run in partnership with the Rural Organizing Project. Walidah Imarisha’s program, “Why Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon? A Hidden History,” provided opportunities for Oregonians to learn about and try to make sense of their experiences of racism.

The next step for many participants was clear: they formed action groups to respond to hate crimes in their communities. We saw then—as we saw many times in 2014—how asking big questions can connect us more strongly to the work we’re doing and to the people we’re doing it with.

Your support of Oregon Humanities this year was an act of generosity toward your fellow Oregonians, and an expression of your values and priorities in the world. I thank you again for your decision to join us.

Making ConnectionsOREGON HUMANITIES MAGAZINE readers have long known the excitement of a new issue arriving in the mail, and new in 2014, readers were able to watch short films inspired by writing found in the magazine.

In fall 2014, Oregon Humanities partnered with Storymind Productions to produce a video based on Caitlin Baggott’s article ”Before You Know It.” The video explores a central question raised by Baggott: how can an individual’s zip code be more closely connected to his or her health than genetic code?

The article and the short film gave thousands of people a new lens on how we can measure and work for equity in our interconnected communities.

Oregon Humanities magazine—in print and online—helps Oregonians make connections with new ideas, fresh perspectives, and each other.

Serving OthersAT THE KICKOFF event for a group of young AmeriCorps volunteers about to start yearlong service commitments at Oregon nonprofits, the action and excitement began with conversation.

With help from Adam Davis, Oregon Humanities’ executive director, 240 volunteers asked big questions of themselves and each other. As they began their year of serving others, how could they know they were truly helping? How would they handle their doubts?

Whether they were talking in pairs, at their tables, or in the whole group, they actively responded to what other people said and challenged one another to think about what they were committing to. They did not shy away from questions about service and intervening in others’ lives.

The conversations, the camaraderie, and even the disagreements helped them connect with the inspiration that led them to join AmeriCorps to begin with and got their year of service off to a meaningful start.

Oregon Humanities 2014 Annual Report

Going on TourAFTER WITNESSING a rise in white supremacist activity in Josephine County last year, the Rural Organizing Project (ROP), a network of organizations promoting democracy and human dignity, turned to Oregon Humanities. Together, they collaborated to bring Walidah Imarisha’s popular Conversation Project program, “Why Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon? A Hidden History,” to six rural communities in Oregon. Each conversation was followed by an ROP-led workshop about local responses to hate crimes.

The tour drew six hundred participants overall and, in Albany, inspired community members to organize biweekly meetings to discuss how to make Linn and Benton counties more welcoming to people of color, how to pool resources and help people access them, and how to bring information about Oregon’s history of racism into local schools.

This isn’t just history, Imarisha says: “It’s a living legacy, because this very much walks with each of us every day.”
